• Using the stadard Java logging, is it possible to restart logs after a certain period?

  I have some java code that will be running as an importer for data for a much larger project. The initial logging code was done with the java.util.logging classes, so I'd like to keep it if possible, but it seems to be a little inadequate now given he amount of data passing through the importer. Often times in the system, the importer will get data that the main system doesn't have information for or doesn't match the system's data so it is ignored but a message is written to the log about what information was dropped and why it wasn't imported. The problem is that this tends to grow in size very quickly, so we'd like to be able to start a fresh log daily or weekly. Does anybody have an idea if this can be done in the logging classes or would I have to switch to log4j or custom? Thanks for any help!

• Generating C++ BackTraces in OS/X (10.5.7)

  I've been utilizing backtrace and backtrace_symbols to generate programmatic stack traces for the purposes of logging/diagnosis. It seems to roughly work, however, I'm getting a little bit of mangling and there are no accompanying file/line numbers associated with each function invocation (as I'd expect within a gdb bt call or something). • render HTML (convert to bitmap)

  Can somebody recommend the best (and preferably portable) way to render HTML documents onto a bitmap? As far as I understand my main 2 options are WebKit and Gecko, but I wasn't able to find a good starting point on how to do it. When I last tried doing this 5 years ago, I ended up using Gecko to send the document to a printer, which is not really what I need. I need rendering to a in-memory bitmap. To clarify: server side, no Java, no .NET, batch processing, performance, not interactive, no Javascript.

• Build an unbound form in Acess 2007

  I have an access application that has a form that allows the user to enter case notes. The main field of this form is tied to a SQL Server varchar(MAX) field in the source table. Since the users switched to Access 2007, their program keeps crashing when they are on the case notes form. As a possible solution to this problem, I would like to try unbinding this form and re-building it as an unbound form. This form needs to be able to add and update records into my SQL Server database. It also needs to be able to browse between records. I guess I am at a loss as to where to start. Any suggestions/code snippets is appreciated.

• Adding HTML to the DOM through the client.

  Hi all Just wanted your views on the most efficient way to render content on demand, the reason this has come to light is that I'm maintaining a AA compliant website and we recently added video to it, and one of the techniques to avoid invalidation was to add the HTML for the video to the DOM after the page has loaded - which is fine and working ok. However, I found 2 possible techniques and I would appreciate some views, the one I'm currently using is an AJAX call that returns the HTML, the other technique is a hidden field that contains the HTML - I'm presently using the former. The main reason I'm asking the question is because there may be times when this particular control is also requested via an AJAX call, so I would end up with back-to-back AJAX calls, which seems a bit inefficient to me. I hope this makes sense, are there any better techniques to achieve this? Am I worrying too much over the consecutive AJAX calls? Thanks

• CSS Relative sized header/footer

  Hi I'm not a CSS expert so I might be missing something obvious. I'm trying to set a relative size header and footer (so that on larger monitors, the header and footer are larger than on smaller screens). To do this, I'm using a percentage height. However, this only works if I set the position to absolute. The problem is, setting it to absolute means that it overlaps the main part of the screen (inbetween the header and footer). Setting it to relative doesn't work since it relies on items being inside the header/footer. This is what my header looks like: .header { position:absolute; top:0px; background-color:white; width:100%; height:30%; } the ASPX page simply contains <div class="header"></div> Is there a way to get relatively proportioned header and footers? In the java aplication we make and run some objects in main(class and method) and use them while program is running. for example an object that hold a collection of data that will be needed for all user requests. My question is: How can i create and hold such objects and data that should be available for all users and clients.

  Hi, I have three windows: 1st - main window 2nd - child window - it's opened using window.showModalDialog from 1st widnow. 3rd - window - is an ancestor of 1st widnow and is's opened from 2nd widnow using window.showModalDialog. And now what I need to achivie is to open 1, 2 and 3 window. Next after closing the 3rd one, refrest the 2nd one. And after closing the 2nd one, refresh the 1st one. But there is one more assumption, I don't want to have any postback during this proces. Dose anybody have any idea how to make it?

  From my readings, when you execute a command as follows: java -jar foo.jar Then the main classpath is ignored and the classpath is taken from the manifest file. Further, the classpath declared on the command line is also ignored. So in: java -classpath /usr/local/jar/foobar.jar -jar foo.jar /usr/local/jar/foobar.jar is ignored. Lastly, I have read that the manifest file can only only contain relative paths, within the jar file. So, how do you include absolute paths to external jars, that are present on the system, but not in the jar file being executed?

  The main concept goes like this. I have four listviews with its own data loaded at the same time. Only one listview will be visible to the user. Now, when the user presses a button, not only the current listview but also other three listviews should be minimized and then user can just scroll just as in Gallery and select the listview that one wants to open.   Hi, I see C books that use the same variable names in the function definition, calling function and declaration. Others use the same variable names in the calling function and in the declaration/prototype but a different one in the definition as in: void blabla(int something); //prototype blabla(something) // calling function inside main after something has been initialized to int void blabla(int something_else) //definition I have two questions: What convention is best to use in C?; Does the convention apply regardless whether a value is being passed "by-value" or if it's being passed by a pointer? • Using Rails 3 and Haml 3, how do I configure Haml?

  I'm using Rails 3.0.0.beta3 and Haml 3.0.0.rc.2, and I can't find where I need to place the configuration lines for Haml (nor what they are in the new version, for that matter). Using Rails 2.3.5 and Haml 2, I would do Haml::Template.options[:format] = :html5 in environment.rb. Or, in Sinatra, set :haml, {:format => :html5} in my main file. But in Rails 3 everything's been changed around, and no matter where I put that configuration line, I get an undefined method or undefined object error.

  Hey guys, It is really frustrating me. I used the doc provided by Navigon itself. Unfortunately it doesn't work as expected. Navigon launches, but stops at the main menu.   My SMF forum contains posts with video and I want to extract them to show on the Wordpress main page. My current regexp (thanks to SO!) extracts the url of the videos, which I embed using AutoEmbed. How can I use the regexp to look for "src=" for <embed> and "data=" for <object>?

• sproutcore or cappucino for web app development?

  I recently found out about the sproutcore and capuccino frameworks for web app development as proper MVC approach to creating Desktop-like applications. As far as I could understand, the main difference between the two frameworks is that Cappucino abstracts away the HTML+CSS+Javascript to Objective-J - a new programming language developed be the creators of Capuccino that adds OO capabilities to Javascript, whereas Sproutcore uses HTML5,CSS,Javascript. After lots of pondering, I thought it's probably best to go with technologies we know, so I downloaded the Sproutcore tools and did the tutorials, and I have to say I was very impressed. Just the kind of thing I was looking for, for organizing a complex web app. However, I just stumbled across the following link: http://charlesjolley.sys-con.com/node/1341228 in which Charles Jolley (the creator of Sproutcore) syas that he's tired of waiting for the HTML5 and ECMAScript5 specs to get finalized, and announces that from version 1.1 onwards they will be switching to Objective-J ! So now the question is - what will actually differentiate Sproutcore and Capuccino - and which one should I choose now? Kind Regards Swami

• VS 2008 Profiler - Caller/Callee view showing bottom of stack

  Hello, I am currently trying to profile a class contained in a different assembly. To do this I created a small console application which calls into the public entry point of the class I want to profile. This enrty point is called Run(). This is working fine when I run my Console application in Debug mode and I can step into the Run() method. The Run() method calls a variety of other methods in its own assembly and other assemblies. However, when I create a new profiler of type "Instrumentation" in VS 2008, and run the profiler, the report shows my Main() function calling Run(), but in turn, when viewing the Caller/Callee report for my Run() method the report shows that the Run() method is the bottom of the stack. This is clearly not the case - could anyone please suggest why this is happening? Thanks.

• MDB2 With SQL Express 2008

  Hi all, So basically here's my problem. I'm looking for a solution to allow us to connect with SQL Express 2008, while still using MDB2 as our database abstraction layer. I need something like this, mainly because we still need to be able to use MySQL and Postgres (and ORMs seem to be not an option at this point in time). Preferably, there would be a solution that works for both PHP5.2 and PHP5.3. At first I went down the php_mysql extension road... it seems, though, as though that is not available in PHP 5.3. php_pdo_mssql doesn't seem to be usable with MDB2, so that seems to be out. Finally, there's the MS developed 'SQLSRV' extension, and while it seems as though there was work on a MDB2 'extension' for it at one point, it doesn't seem to have ever made it into the main branch. Please... does anyone have any solutions for me?

  Ok my Giant friends once again I seek a little space in your shoulders :P Here is the issue, I have a python script that is fixing some database issues but it is taking way too long, the main update statement is this: cursor.execute("UPDATE jiveuser SET username = '%s' WHERE userid = %d" % (newName,userId)) That is getting called about 9500 times with different newName and userid pairs... Any suggestions on how to speed up the process? Maybe somehow a way where I can do all updates with just one query? Any help will be much appreciated! PS: Postgres is the db being used.

  I am writing a library that generates derived classes of abstract classes dynamically at runtime. The constructor of the derived class needs a MethodInfo of the base class constructor so that it can invoke it. However, for some reason Type.GetConstructor() returns null. For example: abstract class Test { public abstract void F(); } public static void Main(string[] args) { ConstructorInfo constructor = typeof(Test).GetConstructor( BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Public, null, System.Type.EmptyTypes, null); // returns null! } Note that GetConstructor returns null even if I explicitly declare a constructor in Test, and even if Test is not abstract.
