• White Paper on Analysis Services Tabular Large-scale Solution #ssas #tabular

  Since the first beta of Analysis Services 2012, I worked with many companies designing and implementing solutions based on Analysis Services Tabular. I am glad that Microsoft published a white paper about a case-study using one of these scenarios: An Analysis Services Case Study: Using Tabular Models in a Large-scale Commercial Solution. Alberto Ferrari is the author of the white paper and many people contributed to it. The final result is a very technical document based on a case study, which provides a level of detail that I don’t see often in other case studies (which are usually more marketing-oriented). This white paper has the following structure: Requirements (data model, capacity planning, client tool) Options considered (SQL Server Columnstore Indexes, SSAS Multidimensional, SSAS Tabular) Data Model optimizations (memory compression, query performance, scalability) Partitioning and Processing strategy for near real-time latency Hardware selection (NUMA analysis, Azure VM tests) Scalability tests (estimation of maximum users per node) If you are in charge of evaluating Tabular as analytical engine, or if you have to design your solution based on Tabular, this white paper is a must read. But if you just want to increase your knowledge of Analysis Services, you will find a lot of useful technical information. That said, my favorite quote of the document is the following one, funny but true: […] After several trials, the clear winner was a video gaming machine that one guy on the team used at home. That computer outperformed any available server, running twice as fast as the server-class machines we had in house. At that point, it was clear that the criteria for choosing the server would have to be expanded a bit, simply because it would have been impossible to convince the boss to build a cluster of gaming machines and trust it to serve our customers.  But, honestly, if a business has the flexibility to buy gaming machines (assuming the machines can handle capacity) – do this. • How to proxy to different named databases on the same server using MySQL Proxy?

  I would like to have two databases on my MySQL server: DEV_DB_A DEV_DB_B However, in order to keep everyone's scripts, Query Browser settings and anything else from changing when we switch from using on DB to another I'd like to have everyone connect to DEV_DB and then use something like MySQL Proxy running a lua script which knows the currently active DB is DEV_DB_A and routes queries to there. If we restore a fresh version of the DB to DEV_DB_B or make some changes (e.g. partition a table) we can easily switch to DEV_DB_B by changing one Lua script instead of updating references everywhere. I had hoped I might be able to symlink inside of the mysql data directory but that didn't work so it seems like MySQL Proxy is a reasonable approach. Being new to Lua and MySQL Proxy I'm wondering if anyone else has approached the problem this way and how it worked.

• Traceroutes to every site includes nameintelligence.com

  I used domaintools.com to do a traceroute on a bunch of sites, and noticed that every single one leads to this "nameintelligence.com" site that I have never heard of. Absolutely every site, including this one, google, my own site, yahoo, microsoft.com, stackoverflow, EVERYTHING, has nameintelligence.com in the first position. What is that site, and what do they do? They're a PR 4 apparently, yet I have never heard of them. I think this would be the right place to ask, I am sorry if I am wrong. • Hyperthreading vs. SQL Server & PostgreSQL

  I have read that hyperthreading is a "performance killer" when it comes to DBs. However, what I read didn't state which CPUs. Further, it mostly indicated that I/O was "cut to < 10% performance". That logically doesn't make sense since I/O is primarily a function of controllers and disks, not CPUs. But then no one ever said bugs made sense. What I read also stated that SQL Server could put two parallel query ops onto 1 logical core (2 threads), thereby degrading performance. I have a hard time believing SQL Server's architects would have made such an obvious miscalculation. Does anyone have and data on how hyperthreading on current generation CPUs affects either of the RDBMSs I mentioned?

• Database Schema Usage

  I have a question regarding the appropriate use of SQL Server database schemas and was hoping that some database gurus might be able to offer some guidance around best practice. Just to give a bit of background, my team has recently shrunk to 2 people and we have just been merged with another 6 person team. My team had set up a SQL Server environment running off a desktop backing up to another desktop (and nightly to the network), whilst the new team has a formal SQL Server environment, running on a dedicated server, with backups and maintenance all handled by a dedicated team. So far it's good news for my team. Now to the query. My team designed all our tables to belong to a 3-letter schema name (e.g. User = USR, General = GEN, Account = ACC) which broadly speaking relate to specific applications, although there is a lot of overlap. My new team has come from an Access background and have implemented their tables within dbo with a 3-letter perfix followed by "_tbl" so the examples above would be dbo.USR_tblTableName, dbo.GEN_tblTableName and dbo.ACC_tblTableName. Further to this, neither my old team nor my new team has gone live with their SQL Servers yet (we're both coincidentally migrating away from Access environments) and the new team have said they're willing to consider adopting our approach if we can explain how this would be beneficial. We are not anticipating handling table updates at schema level, as we will be using application-level logins. Also, with regards to the unwieldiness of the 7-character prefix, I'm not overly concerned myself as we're using LINQ almost exclusively so the tables can simply be renamed in the DMBL (although I know that presents some challenges when we update the DBML). So therefore, given that both teams need to be aligned with one another, can anyone offer any convincing arguments either way?

• How to make a legacy system time-zone sensitive?

  I need to implement time zones in a very large and old Delphi system, where there's a central SQL Server database and possibly hundreds of client installations around the world in different time zones. The application already interacts with the database by only using the date/time of the database server. So, all the time stamps saved in both the database and on the client machines are the date/time of the database server when it happened, never the time of the client machine. So, when a client is about to display the date/time of something (such as a transaction) which is coming from this database, it needs to show the date/time converted to the local time zone. This is where I get lost. I would naturally assume there should be something in SQL to recognize the time zone and convert a DateTime field dynamically. I'm not sure if such a thing exists though. If so, that would be perfect, but if not, I need to figure out another way. This Delphi system (multiple projects) utilizes the SQL Server database using ADO components, VCL data-aware controls, and QuickReports (using data sources). So, there's many places where the data goes directly from the database query to rendering on the screen, without any code to actually put this data on the screen. In the end, I need to know when and how should I get the properly converted time? What is the proper way to ensure that I handle Dates and Times correctly in a legacy application?

  I have an account, user_a, and I would like to grant all available permissions on some_db to user_b. I have tried the following query: GRANT ALTER, ALTER ROUTINE, CREATE, CREATE ROUTINE, CREATE TEMPORARY TABLES, CREATE VIEW, DELETE, DROP, EVENT, EXECUTE, INDEX, INSERT, LOCK TABLES, REFERENCES, SELECT, SHOW VIEW, TRIGGER, UPDATE ON `some_db`.* TO 'user_b'@'%' WITH GRANT OPTION The result: Access denied for user 'user_a'@'%' to database 'some_db' Some experimentation has shown me that the only permissions my account (user_a) is unable to grant are EVENT, EXECUTE, LOCK TABLES, and TRIGGER. • Monitoring IIS with SNMP

  Hello, I'm trying to monitor IIS using the Windows integrated SNMP service (for versions 2000, 2003 ans 2008 of Windows Server, but i'm doing my experiments on a 2008 R2 box). So far I was able to install the SNMP service, and query mib-2 values without problems. Now, I'm having trouble to monitor IIS informations, as the SNMP service does not seem to know about the .iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.microsoft.software.internetServer OIDs. Walking the entire SNMP tree only gets the mib-2 stuff as well as the names of some services, but that's it. I did't find anything interesting in the service configuration panel. So how do I configure this service to get IIS information, or other WMI data for that matter (I installed the SNMP WMI Provider) ? I can't find any documentation about that !

• SQL Server Performance & Latching

  I have a SQL server 2000 instance which runs several concurrent select statements on a group of 4 or 5 tables. Often the performance of the server during these queries becomes extremely diminished. The querys can take up to 10x as long as other runs of the same query, and it gets to the point where simple operations like getting the table list in object explorer or running sp_who can take several minutes. I've done my best to identify the cause of these issues, and the only performance metric which I've found to be off base is Average Latch Wait time. I've read that over 1 second wait time is bad, and mine ranges anywhere from 20 to 75 seconds under heavy use. So my question is, what could be the issue? Shouldn't SQL be able to handle multiple selects on a single table without losing so much performance? Can anyone suggest somewhere to go from here to investigate this problem? Thanks for the help.

• Aggregating Excel cell contents that match a label [migrated]

  I'm sure this isn't a terribly difficult thing, but it's not the type of question that easily lends itself to internet searches. I've been assigned a project for work involving a complex spreadsheet. I've done the usual =SUM and other basic Excel formulas, and I've got enough coding background that I'm able to at least fudge my way through VBA, but I'm not certain how to proceed with one part of the task. Simple version: On Sheet 1 I have a list of people (one on each row, person's name in column A), on sheet 2 I have a list of groups (one on each row, group name in column A). Each name in Sheet 1 has its own row, and I have a "Data Validation" dropdown menu where you choose the group each person belongs to. That dropdown is sourced from Sheet 2, where each group has a row. So essentially the data validation source for Sheet 1's "Group" column is just "=Sheet2!$a1:a100" or whatever. The problem is this: I want each group row in Sheet 2 to have a formula which results in a list of all the users which have been assigned to that group on Sheet 1. What I mean is something the equivalent of "select * from PeopleTab where GROUP = ThisGroup". The resulting cell would just stick the names together like "Bob Smith, Joe Jones, Sally Sanderson" I've been Googling for hours but I can't think of a way to phrase my search query to get the results I want. Here's an example of desired result (Dash-delimited. Can't find a way to make it look nice, table tags don't seem to work here): (Sheet 1) Bob Smith - Group 1 (selected from dropdown) Joe Jones - Group 2 (selected from dropdown) Sally Sanderson - Group 1 (selected from dropdown) (Sheet 2) Group 1 - Bob Smith, Sally Sanderson (result of formula) Group 2 - Joe Jones (result of formula) What formula (or even what function) do I use on that second column of sheet 2 to make a flat list out of the members of that group?

• DB2 LUW tools for diagnosing issues when the stuff hits the fan

  I am no DBA and very much a novice when it comes to DB2 so even 'obvious' answers are welcome to this question: I love db2top but sometimes I cannot get it to run if the load average is high on a db2 LUW. This morning I was looking at an issue where load average shot up suddenly, I could not get db2top to come up and I needed to find out what was happening. What can I do to find out who is doing what in this situation? I suspected a horribly bad query was being run by someone...is there a good way to find information on poor performing SQL on the fly in that type of situation? Are there any good ways to collect good, actionable stats who/where bad sql is coming from in the event that load average is so high? I know about db2pd but I am not sure how to use it effectively and slogging through tens of thousands of lines of raw data is probably not the most efficient way to get at the heart of a problem. Any tips or resources?

  Hello all, I've got an interesting table in one of my DBs that's confusing me. The table in question has a a few LOB type columns (two nvarchar(max) and a text) and it looks like there's some strange space issues going on. from this query: SELECT type_desc, SUM(total_pages) *8 [Size in kb] FROM sys.partitions p JOIN sys.allocation_units a ON p.partition_id = a.container_id WHERE p.object_id = OBJECT_ID('asyncoperationbase') GROUP BY type_desc; I get: type_desc Size in kb IN_ROW_DATA 27936 LOB_DATA 1198144 ROW_OVERFLOW_DATA 0 (there's just under 8000 rows in the table, each row has a data length of ~10k - not counting the LOB data) here's where it gets somewhat interesting: SELECT ( SUM(DATALENGTH(aob.WorkflowState)) + SUM(DATALENGTH(aob.[Message]))+ SUM(DATALENGTH(aob.[Data])) ) / 1024 FROM AsyncOperationBase aob returns: 76617 As I'm reading it - it looks like the ~75mb of LOB data is using over a gig of space to be stored - I would expect some overhead but not quit that much. • What is the difference between Row Level Security and RPD security?

  Row level security (RLS) is a feature of Oracle Enterprise Edition database. RLS enforces security policies on the database level. This means any query executed against the database will respect the specific security applied through these policies. For P6 Reporting Database, these policies are applied during the ETL process. This gives database users the ability to access data with security enforcement even outside of the Oracle Business Intelligence application. RLS is a new feature of P6 Reporting Database starting in version 3.0. This allows for maximum security enforcement outside of the ETL and inside of Oracle Business Intelligence (Analysis and Dashboards). Policies are defined against the STAR tables based on Primavera Project and Resource security. RLS is the security method of Oracle Enterprise Edition customers. See previous blogs and P6 Reporting Database Installation and Configuration guide for more on security specifics. To allow the use of Oracle Standard Edition database for those with a small database (as defined in the P6 Reporting Database Sizing and Planning guide) an RPD with non-RLS is also available. RPD security is enforced by adding specific criteria to the physical and business layers of the RPD for those tables that contain projects and resources, and those fields that are cost fields vs. non cost fields. With the RPD security method Oracle Business Intelligence enforces security. RLS security is the default security method. Additional steps are required at installation and ETL run time for those Oracle Standard Edition customers who use RPD security. The RPD method of security enforcement existed from P6 Reporting Database 2.0/P6 Analytics 1.0 up until RLS became available in P6 Reporting Database 3.0\P6 Analytics 2.0.

  I have two servers in this set up. AD and EX, the domain is called mydomain.net The AD is a Windows 2008 Server (32 bit) with Active Directory installed AD only has it's own ip in the DNS-servers list AD.mydomain.net does resolve correctly in the dns EX is a Windows 2008 R2 that is connected to the mydomain.net-domain EX only DNS server is the ip of the ad.mydomain.net There are no firewalls running between the two servers When trying to install Lync 2010 on the EX server I get the following error "Not available :Failure occurred attempting to check the schema state.Please ensure Active Directory is reachable." I can control the AD from EX, also login to it and do successful checks like netdom query /domain:mydomain.net fsmo ...that resolves correctly I suspect there is something fundamentally wrong with my setup, maybe Lync need a 2k8 R2 ad?

  Hello, i quite don't understand Authority RRs. Using dig to resolve some random A records, my caching DNS server sometimes also return Authority RRs and sometimes not. The number and the type of the returned Authority RRs also vary a lot. What does control whether Authority RRs are returned or not on a standard client query ? Is it a client or server setting ? What does control how many Authoriy RRs are returned ? What does control of the type of the Authority RRs records returned ? Sometimes it's multiple NS, sometimes it's a SOA. It's also often comes with Additional RRs of type A about the Authority RRs NS returned. I'm really looking for a RFC or kind of describing this. Thanks.

• PostgreSQL: performance descrease due to index bloatper

  I'm running a PgSQL 8.1 on a CentOS 4.4 system (not upgradable unfortunately). There's a Java app running on top of the PgSQL daemon and we got to reindex the database every 2 months or so. Also important: the database isn't growing. It looks like the bloat is now coming faster than before and this tends to increase.   I'm trying to learn how to use a keyword tool in Adwords. Here's what I entered: Country- Russia Language-Russian Desktop and laptop devices And the keyword was ???? ? ??????? (tours to Israel in Russian Cyrillic letters) . As a broad match type... Now... the results that I got were: Global monthly: 60,500 Local monthly: 40,500 If I got it right..."Global monthly" means in this context : worldwide average monthly searches for this search term in ANY language in any Google search site (google.ru, google.com.ua, google.com, google.fr etc.). It's all nice, BUT... Then I made an query for tours to Israel in English in the US...And I got: Global monthly: 60,500 Local monthly: 27,100 That doesn't make any sense to me though! How come the total sum (the global) is actually a smaller number than a combined sum of just TWO countries??? (27,100+40,500=67,60060,500) By "any language" they mean a translation of the term into ANY possible language???Or maybe by "language" Google means the language of searchers' operating system? or their browsers' language?

• Haskell: Best tools to validate textual input?

  In Haskell, there are a few different options to "parsing text". I know of Alex & Happy, Parsec and Attoparsec. Probably some others. I'd like to put together a library where the user can input pieces of a URL (scheme e.g. HTTP, hostname, username, port, path, query, etc.) I'd like to validate the pieces according to the ABNF specified in RFC 3986. In other words, I'd like to put together a set of functions such as: validateScheme :: String -> Bool validateUsername :: String -> Bool validatePassword :: String -> Bool validateAuthority :: String -> Bool validatePath :: String -> Bool validateQuery :: String -> Bool What is the most appropriate tool to use to write these functions? Alex's regexps is very concise, but it's a tokenizer and doesn't straightforwardly allow you to parse using specific rules, so it's not quite what I'm looking for, but perhaps it can be wrangled into doing this easily. I've written Parsec code that does some of the above, but it looks very different from the original ABNF and unnecessarily long. So, there must be an easier and/or more appropriate way. Recommendations?

• Windows Fax Server Leaves Documents in "Pending" Status

  We are having an issue with Windows Fax Server on Windows Server 2008. Occasionally, the server will get into a state where after adding jobs to the outbox, they will simply remain at the pending status (without any attempt to send them). There is nothing in the event log mentioning a problem. It typically seems to enter the state after restarting the server or after no faxes have been sent for a while. The way to fix the issue has been to: Stop the Fax service Go into the modem properties in device manager and query modem Start the Fax service - at which point all the pending faxes in the outbox will send.
