• Getting Started Quickly

  If you're interested in using Ops Center, you'll want to get up and running as quickly and effectively as possible. One way to do this would be to work your way through the documentation library - use the Linux or Oracle Solaris install guides, then go through the Feature Guide and Admin Guide to start using the software. They're thorough, but they're a lot of reading. But if you're looking to install a simple deployment quickly, and you don't want to do all of the configuration work right off the bat, you can use the Quick Start Guide. It's a streamlined procedure that runs you through installing a single Enterprise Controller and co-located Proxy Controller, and then shows you how to discover assets quickly. Once you've discovered these assets, it describes how to use the analytics feature to view their performance, and use monitoring to keep track of their statuses and health. You'll have to do some additional configuration to use features like OS provisioning, OS updates, and virtualization, but the Quick Start guide gives you an overview of how to install and start using features quickly.

What software and hardware recommendation would be enough for me? I've found some game server engine such as photon. But is it too much for a simple game? I'm thinking of using REST technology with F3 PHP server and Mysql. Will it be adequate? Will only one physical server enough? What is the hardware recommendation for the server?

• Graphics problems: noise-like glitch, and screen freezes in Ubuntu 13.04

  I have recently upgraded to 13.04 and am using unity. I am experiencing two intermittent problems with the graphics: 1) All or part of the screen is taken up by 'noise', which lasts for about a second, see screenshot: 2) The launcher panel freezes. I can still move the mouse and the keyboard responds to function keys (I can dim the screen), but I cannot select anything. At the moment I recover by ctr-alt-f1, and restarting lightdm. My computer is a Samsung Chronos 7 laptop, model NP700Z5C, with Intel HD 4000 graphics The same problems occur with lightdm and gdm. I have attempted to install the intel drivers (as the screenshot hints) but these are not indicated as additional drivers in software & updates so I'm not sure whether they are in use. Any suggestions?

  My friend is a project manager for a software company. The most frustrating thing for him is that his engineers frequently leave their jobs. The company works hard to recruit new engineers, transfer projects, and keep a stable quality product. When people leave, it drives my friend crazy. These engineers are quite young and ambitious, and they want higher salaries and better positions. The big boss only thinks about it in financial terms, and his theory is that “three newbies are always better than one veteran” (which, as an experienced engineer, I know is wrong). My friend hates that theory. Any advice for him?

• Menu to let me choose OS to run in a dual boot machine

  I recently re-imaged my Dell PC to dual-install Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. The dual-boot was a success, since I was able to start whichever OS I wanted. Now, I installed some software (the OpenJDK package) on the Ubuntu side of the PC. Upon restarting Ubuntu, I unfortunately lost the ability to choose the OS that I wanted to run (i.e., Ubuntu). Ordinarily, I'd expect to: 1. Hit the power button 2. A menu (Grub?) shows up listing all OSs installed in the PC (namely, Win7 and Ubuntu) 3. Choose which OS I want and hit enter. bingo. The problem is that I don't see that menu (step 2 above). Instead, windows automatically starts, even when I hit F12 to see the boot options, none of which I understand. Your help would be great!   Hi, I have a server (Ubuntu 8.04 server) that I want to use as a music player. I want my laptop Ubuntu 10.04 to be one speaker and my mac pro (mac os x 10.6) to be the other. Okay software is found and setup is done, (thanks for the pictures @JorgeCastro.) all of the softwares in both computers and server is setup how should I continue? http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/FirstSteps well if the sound is bad, is there a solution like compressing the sound files before sending them to the speaker? then you could improve sound quality and lower the data stream.

• Size mismatch error while downloading packages [closed]

  I've been having this annoying problem lately since I upgraded from Linux Mint 9 to Ubuntu 12.04. It started when I was installing VLC from the Ubuntu Software Centre a few weeks ago. I kept getting this error with packages with "Size mismatch". This happened with many other programs later on. I just got around it by downloading the packages separately and installing them that way. Now I get two updates for packages I installed in that manner. I tried changing from where I download the packages, it didn't change anything. If anyone can help me with my issue it would be splendid.   I have a Voip Softphone software that I would like to start using on my Ubuntu 14.04 box. Here's the thing. My system sound right now goes through my HDMI to my speaker system so I can play music all day ;-) I have a bluetooth headset connected to the machine as well. What I am wondering is if there is a way to: Auto-mute the music when a call comes in Auto-switch the sound devices when a call comes in, from my hdmi sound device, to my headset Auto-switch back when the call ends, and auto-un-mute the music Or even just an auto-switch to the headset? I can always pause the music ;)

• nginx codeigniter rewrite: Controller name conflicts with directory

  I'm trying out nginx and porting my existing apache configuration to nginx. I have managed to reroute the codeigniter url's successfully, but I'm having a problem with one particular controller whose name coincides with a directory in site root. I managed to make my codeigniter url's work as it did in Apache except that, I have a particular url say http://localhost/hello which coincides with a hello directory in site root. Apache had no problem with this. But nginx routes to this directory instead of the controller. My reroute structure is as follows http://host_name/incoming_url => http://host_name/index.php/incoming_url All the codeigniter files are in site root. • Why do exclusively outsourcing projects as a company?

  A prospective employer told me they took a company level decision to only do outsourcing projects. I do not understand why did they take such a decision and the guy I talked to did not elaborate. He further said only that "their intention is to build software components". Since they are growing quite fast and reached around 300 employees, shouldn't they be at least open to the possibility of having a project of their own, maybe? All other companies I've had contact with were at least open to have one in the future.. I talked to a few of their employees and some are working in parallel on more than 2 outsourced projects (dividing time something like 4 + 4 hours / day). It seemed like a lot of projects with a period of a few months, maybe half an year come and go... Why would a company choose to provide only outsourcing services like that? How does it work to keep hundreds of people on outsourced projects with a seemingly high project turnover rate?

• Cant find one particular wireless network. Worked before, but sudenly stopt working.

  My first question here. My problem is: I cant find my wireless network at home. Situation: It worked fine 7 days ago. It works with a cable(wierd). I find the network on my ipad/phone. I can connect to wireless hotspot network form my phone and wireless at my university, and it works fine. I can connect to the network in windows What I have tried: Tried this Strange network issue; works on windows, but not on ubuntu, works on campus wireless, but not at home (removing resolve.conf). Hardware and software: I have a Broadcom card Use dual boot ubuntu 12.04 - windows 7 Things I did to make wireless work: blacklist brcmsmac blacklist bcma blacklist b43 blacklist ssb Can anyone help me? • ctrl + a doesn't work in browsers

  The combination for select all (ctrl+a) doesn't work in a browser (either if we speak about firefox or chromium). It doesn't work if I try to clik in to the adress bar nor if I try to use it to select what I've written in google search bar at google.com. When I press ctrl + a it simply takes the cursor before the first letter. This doesn't happen when I use a text editor software like Libre Office. There the shortcut does what's supposed to do, selecting all the text. What could be the problem?

I have a bit of a passion for average end-users suggesting the kinds of software they want and they way they think their applications and computers could work. I'm interested in joining the Ubuntu Brainstorm team, maybe to facilitate ideas not getting buried and making it not seem like a dead platform. • Great job offer..but I have uneasy feeling [closed]

  I just got an offer for a great opportunity, location, salary...but something seams odd. During my interview, for the position of software engineer, it was very relaxed and casual. Which was very nice. But I got the odd sense that I already had the job and that this was just a "getting to know you" conversation. Then, when they never did any code testing or assignment to demonstrate my skills I thought that really odd. It's like I got hired straight from my resume. I'm uncomfortable with this because I'd rather know now, that I don't meet their needs, rather than after 3 months. (Which is when benefits kick in and they say they'll convert me from temp. employee) This sounds like temp-to-hire or contract-to-hire.

• What's the most productive coding environment

  I was speaking with an ex-colleague the other day about the most productive way to write code and he said he found it best "to CIMP, or Code In My Pants". When I asked him exactly what he meant, he explained he found it best to work at home, coding at his own pace, dressed comfortably (in his pants), and communicating with his team through emails, IM, or the telephone. Digesting his approach (which he describes to clients as the Complete Integrated Method of Programming), I realised my coding is also more productive when working in an isolated environment, which made me wonder if the software industry has got it all wrong and should development be really done by dispersed teams of individuals, or are there advantages to geographical herding that make up for the added interruptions it brings? So has business got it wrong? Should development occur predominantly across geographically isolated individuals to increase productivity, or are there real reasons why herding developers together makes sense?

I am just guessing, there is no end to programming, there is always someone who know what you do not know, once you learn it all something evolves out of somewhere, and you have to learn that one. It is a perpetually process eventually. But, at what point can you consider yourself, you are worth much in the programming world? By the amount of your reputation on Stackechange or if you create your own software...? When can you even know?
