  • What's the best way to share one Entity Framework 4 data model among multiple applications (meant to

    - by Ivan
A project (a "solution" to say in VS terms) of mine consists of an ASP.Net 4 Dynamic Data Entities web application, some WinForms applications, some WPF applications, some services. All they are intended to work with one SQL Server database, generated from an Entity Framework 4 model as table-per-type, with lots of inheritance and multiple self-referencing relations. Where do I best put my model? In a separate class library, a copy in every project, in one project, etc. What naming should I best use? Is it good idea to name it MySolution.MyClassLibrary.MySolutionEntities, or just MySolutionEntities or just MySolution? Can you share any useful experience on this subject?

  • How to handle when SSRS does not automatically update fields based on database query?

    - by badpanda
So I am trying to change the number of fields in my dataset in SSRS and the refresh button is not picking up the added field from the SQL server. The query is definitely returning the correct data, as I have double checked in the server engine itself. Also, I have tried manually adding the field using the SSRS menu, but as soon as I execute it disappears. Any suggestions or similar experiences?

  • Simple C++ program on multidimensional arrays - Getting C2143 error among others. Not sure why?

    - by noobzilla
    Here is my simple multidimensional array program. The first error occurs where I declare the function addmatrices and then a second one where it is implemented. I am also getting an undefined variable error for bsize. What am I doing incorrectly? #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <string> #include <iomanip> using namespace std; //Function declarations void constmultiply (double matrixA[][4], int asize, double matrixC[][4], int bsize, double multiplier); //Pre: The address of the output file, the matrix to be multiplied by the constant, the matrix in which // the resultant values will be stored and the multiplier are passed in. //Post: The matrix is multiplied by the multiplier and the results are displayed on screen and written to the // output file. int addmatrices (double matrixA[][4], int asize, double matrixB[]4], int bsize, double matrixC[][4], int csize); //Pre: The addresses of three matrices are passed in //Post: The values in each of the two matrices are added together and put into a third matrix //Error Codes int INPUT_FILE_FAIL = 1; int UNEQUAL_MATRIX_SIZE = 2; //Constants const double multiplier = 2.5; const int rsize = 4; const int csize = 4; //Main Driver int main() { //Declare the two matrices double matrix1 [rsize][csize]; double matrix2 [rsize][csize]; double matrix3 [rsize][csize]; //Variables double temp; string filename; //Declare filestream object ifstream infile; //Ask the user for the name of the input file cout << "Please enter the name of the input file: "; cin >> filename; //Open the filestream object infile.open(filename.c_str()); //Verify that the input file opened correctly if (infile.fail()) { cout << "Input file failed to open" <<endl; exit(INPUT_FILE_FAIL); } //Begin reading in data from the first matrix for (int i = 0; i <= 3; i++)//i = row { for (int j = 0; j <= 3; j++)// j = column { infile >> temp; matrix1[i][j] = temp; } } //Begin reading in data from the second matrix for (int k = 0; k <= 3; k++)// k = row { for (int l = 0; l <= 3; l++)// l = column { infile >> temp; matrix2[k][l] = temp; } } //Notify user cout << "Input file open, reading matrices...Done!" << endl << "Read in 2 matrices..."<< endl; //Output the values read in for Matrix 1 for (int i = 0; i <= 3; i++) { for (int j = 0; j <= 3; j ++) { cout << setprecision(1) << matrix1[i][j] << setw(8); } cout << "\n"; } cout << setw(40)<< setfill('-') << "-" << endl ; //Output the values read in for Matrix 2 for (int i = 0; i <= 3; i++) { for (int j = 0; j <= 3; j ++) { cout << setfill(' ') << setprecision(2) << matrix2[i][j] << setw(8); } cout << "\n"; } cout << setw(40)<< setfill('-') << "-" << endl ; //Multiply matrix 1 by the multiplier value constmultiply (matrix1, rsize, matrix3, rsize, multiplier); //Output matrix 3 values to screen for (int i = 0; i <= 3; i++) { for (int j = 0; j <= 3; j ++) { cout << setfill(' ') << setprecision(2) << matrix3[i][j] << setw(8); } cout << "\n"; } cout << setw(40)<< setfill('-') << "-" << endl ; // //Add matrix1 and matrix2 // addmatrices (matrix1, 4, matrix2, 4, matrix3, 4); // //Finished adding.   • Developing a 2D Game for Windows Phone 8

    - by Vaccano
I would like to develop a 2D game for Windows Phone 8. I am a professional Application Developer by day and this seems like a fun hobby. But I have been disapointed trying to get going. It seems that 2D games (far and away the majority of games) do not have any real support. It seems the Windows Phone makers did not include support for Direct2D. So unless you are planning to make a fully 3D app, you are out of luck. So, if you just wanted to make a nice 2D app, these are your choices: Write your game using Xaml and C# (Performance Issues?) Write your game using Direct3D and but only draw on one plane. Use the DirectX Took Kit found on codeplex. It allows you to use the dying XNA framework's API for development. Number 3 seems the best for my game. But I hate to waste my time learning the XNA api when Microsoft has clearly stated that it is not going to be supported going forward. Number 2 would work, but 3D development is really hard. I would rather not have to do all that to get the 2D effect. (Assuming Direct2D is easier. I have yet to look into that.) Number 1 seems the easiest, but I worry that my app will not run well if it is based off of xaml rendering rather than DirectX. What is the suggested method from Microsoft? And who decided that 2D games were going to get shortchanged?

  • Can I automatically overwrite repository files using svn_load_dirs.pl or similiar?

    - by Andy Strang
I am working with a legacy VSS repository which was transferred over to a new SVN repository a few months ago. In the meantime, before we go live with the SVN repository, we need to bring over all the changes that have happened on the VSS one between then and now. I was looking at different ways to do this which seem to be things such as: 1.) svn_load_dirs.pl then merge the files manually? 2.) svn import straight into the trunk and merge files manually 3.) checkout a working copy of my SVN repository, copy in the changed files which will overwrite some of the ones in my working copy then commit the changes. My question is, can any of these options be used (or any other options) to automate things so that I don't have to merge the files, and can instead just overwrite them? I think only Option 3 would do this but any help is appreciated.

  • Include a version control tag in VSS

    - by Sjuul Janssen
I was reading Code Complete 2 and it mentions this: Many version-control tools wil insert version information into a file. In CVS, for exmple the characters // $id$ Will Automaticly expand to // $id: ClassName.java, v 1.1 2004/02/05 00:36:42 ismene Exp $ So now I would like to do something similar with VSS for our SQL scripts I have been googling around for the answer but can't find it. Is this possible? can someone maybe point me in the right direction?

  • VS 2010 / Resharper 5 Mouse Behavior

    - by Berryl
After upgrading to the above configuration I notice that 1) CTRL-Click on a type highlights the type but doesn't take me to the declaration, 2) Clicking on some closure (ie, like a method) toggles whether it's expanded or collapsed. Since these are both mouse related tasks I figure there is some setting in either VS or R# that I need to change, but I sure can't figure out what it is. Anybody know? Cheers, Berryl PS - there is an option in R# to ctrl-click to the type but I have that checked and it still does not work.

  • Looking for a good C++ based RSS API

    - by Rhubarb
I tried http://code.google.com/p/feed-reader-lib but holy cow, talk about difficult to build. It has a nightmare of dependencies on Xerces and Xalan, both of which seem to be choking under the new VisualStudio 2010 C++ compiler. I've wasted hours trying to build this thing which is a shame. Does anyone have anything a little easier to hit the ground running with?

  • Weird characters at the beginning of a LPTSTR? C++

    - by extintor
I am using this code to get the windows version: define BUFSIZE 256 bool config::GetOS(LPTSTR OSv) { OSVERSIONINFOEX osve; BOOL bOsVersionInfoEx; ZeroMemory(&osve, sizeof(OSVERSIONINFOEX)); osve.dwOSVersionInfoSize = sizeof(OSVERSIONINFOEX); if( !(bOsVersionInfoEx = GetVersionEx ((OSVERSIONINFO *) &osve)) ) return false; TCHAR buf[BUFSIZE]; StringCchPrintf(buf, BUFSIZE, TEXT("%u.%u.%u.%u"), osve.dwPlatformId, osve.dwMajorVersion, osve.dwMinorVersion, osve.dwBuildNumber); StringCchCat(OSv, BUFSIZE, buf); return true; } And I am testing it with: LPTSTR OSv= new TCHAR[BUFSIZE]; config c; c.GetOS(OSv); MessageBox(OSv, 0, 0); And in the msgbox I get something like this äì5.1.20 (where 5.1.20 is = to OSv) but the first 2 or 3 chars are some weird characters that I don't know when they came from. Even stranger, if I call that second piece again it shows it ok, it only show the weird characters the first time I execute it. Does someone has an idea what's going on here?

  • Why does C++ linking use virtually no CPU?

    - by John
On a native C++ project, linking right now can take a minute or two, yet during this time CPU drops from 100% during compilation to virtually zero. Does this mean linking is primarily a disk activity? If so, is this the main area an SSD would make big changes? But, why aren't all my OBJ files (or as many as possible) kept in RAM after compilation to avoid this? With 4Gb of RAM I should be able to save a lot of disk access and make it CPU-bound again, no?

  • Use of unassigned local variable 'xxx'

    - by Tomislav
I'm writing a database importer from our competitors to ours database:) I have a code generator which create Methods form import to our database like public void Test_Import_Customer_1() // variables string conn; string sqlSelect; string sqlInsert; int extID; string name; string name2; DateTime date_inserted; sqlSelect="select id,name,date_inserted from table_competitors_1"; oledbreader reader = new GetOledbRader(sqlString, conn); while (reader.read()) { name=left((string)myreader["name"],50); //limitation of my field date_inserted=myreader["date_inserted"]; sqlInsert=string.Format("insert into table(name,name2,date_inserted)values '{0}', '{1}', {2})",name,name2,date_inserted); //here is the problem name2 "Use of unassigned local variable" ExecuteSQL(sqlInsert) } As different companies database has different fields i can not set value to each variable and there is a big number of tables to go one variable to next. like sqlSelect_Company_1 = "select name,date_inserted from table_1"; sqlSelect_Company_2 = "select name,name2 from table_2"; is there a way to override the typing of each variable one by one with default values?

  • Highlight all occurrences of a selected object with ReSharper

    - by Luís Custódio
I was used to use RockScroll (or MetalScroll), but when I started to use ReSharper my RockScroll start to show some bugs. Well, this is scope to another discussion http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1089493/is-rockscroll-compatible-with-resharper. But my problem is related, because now without MetalScroll I can't highlight all occurrences, what I consider very useful in many situations. Someone have another plugin for VS2010 or for ReSharper that do the same or better?

  • Need help understanding .net ThreadPool

    - by Meredith
    I am trying to understand what ThreadPool does, I have this .NET example: class Program { static void Main() { int c = 2; // Use AutoResetEvent for thread management AutoResetEvent[] arr = new AutoResetEvent[50]; for (int i = 0; i < arr.Length; ++i) { arr[i] = new AutoResetEvent(false); } // Set the number of minimum threads ThreadPool.SetMinThreads(c, 4); // Enqueue 50 work items that run the code in this delegate function for (int i = 0; i < arr.Length; i++) { ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(delegate(object o) { Thread.Sleep(100); arr[(int)o].Set(); // Signals completion }, i); } // Wait for all tasks to complete WaitHandle.WaitAll(arr); } } Does this run 50 "tasks", in groups of 2 (int c) until they all finish? Or I am not understanding what it really does.

  • Allocated Private Bytes keeps going up in one computer but not the other

    - by Jacob
OK, this may sound weird, but here goes. There are 2 computers, A (Pentium D) and B (Quad Core) with almost the same amount of RAM. If I run the same code on both computers, the allocated private bytes in A never goes down resulting in a crash later on. In B it looks like the private bytes is constantly deallocated and everything looks fine. In both computers, the working set is deallocated and allocated similarly. Could this be an issue with manifests or DLLs (system)? I'm clueless. Note: I observed the utilized memory with Process Explorer.
