• How Do I Install Latest Java Plugin on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS with Custom Firefox 3.6.3?

  I have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and will need to remain on that for awhile as I am a programmer and cannot disturb what I'm doing in the middle of a project. As you know, it doesn't want to install the latest Firefox by default and keeps me in the stone age. So, I had to install my own Firefox. I did so and with relative ease I was able to install the Flash plugin using the normal 'ln -s' technique one usually does with /usr/lib/firefox/plugins. Now I need to do a Gotomypc.com task and it requires Java -- moan -- so I need to figure out how to install Java. I downloaded and installed the latest Java plugin in /usr/java, and I do see underneath that layer of folders a plugins folder with a .so file. So, I went to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins and did this: ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_20/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so Then, I also read on the web that one has to create a ~/.mozilla/plugins folder, cd into it, and then run the same ln -s command again. Another site recommended finding one's ~/.mozilla/firefox and renaming it to ~/.mozilla/firefox.old (after you backed up your bookmarks) and then launching firefox again so that it creates ~/.mozilla/firefox and uses the new Java plugin. Well, all these attempts have completely failed and it is incredibly frustrating. I do about:plugins to see my plugins and all I get are the Flash and the default null plugin. I do not see the Java one. Also, they said on my tools menu with Firefox 3.6.3 I would see a Java Console menu and I don't see that either. I found a pluginreg.dat somewhere deep under ~/.mozilla/firefox, but it does not list the Java plugin inside -- only Flash and the null plugin. Please help me install Java. I need to help a client out and need to connect to his PC remotely with gotomypc, which requires Java inside firefox.

• really weird DNS problem in Ubuntu {after one month, seems like ISP problem}

  Hello everyone. I been having this random dns problem, in Ubuntu 10.04 and in 10.10 it started about 2 weeks ago after (I believe) an update. Basically when I go to a website randomly I get that the website I'm visiting is not available ("Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to ..." & "This webpage is not available."). I tested with Chromium "7.0.515.0 (58587)" and Firefox minefield (4.0ish) and 3.6.9. I did these 4 things already: /etc/default/grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="ipv6.disable=1" and this: /etc/sysctl.conf net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1 net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1 net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1 *disabling Chromium DNS pre-fetching *using Google and OpenDNS servers as well as ISP DNS servers. But didn't improve, also no other computers in my network have the same problem. All computer wired to the same router. I'm a software engineer that run out of ideas, please help me. Thanks in advance. UPDATE: some programs (synaptic / firefox update/ vuze(azureus)) say connection refused for the error. Most of the time a second try will fix the "refusal". UPDATE2: I found out with Wireshark, that everytime I have this problem i've got this 192.168.0.10 8.8.8.8 ICMP Destination unreachable (Port unreachable) Confirmed an ISP error. ISP;Speedy Location: Argentina, Buenos Aires (capital Federal) Area.

• Installing/enabling PHP Pecl Intl extension on CentOs 5

  Original question: I'm having trouble installing the PHP Pecl Intl extension on my CentOs 5 machine. After installing both icu and libicu with the following commands: $ yum install icu $ yum install libicu I tried to install the Intl extension like so: $ /usr/bin/pecl install intl I selected to search for the default location for the ICU libraries and header files. It ends up crashing like this: checking whether to enable internationalization support... yes, shared checking for icu-config... no checking for location of ICU headers and libraries... not found configure: error: Unable to detect ICU prefix or no failed. Please verify ICU install prefix and make sure icu-config works. ERROR: `/tmp/pear/temp/intl/configure --with-icu-dir=DEFAULT' failed update After successfully installing the development version of icu as suggested by RusAlex (thanks RusAlex) like so: $ yum install libicu-devel I ran into a new problem which I also encountered locally the following command: $ /usr/bin/pecl install intl now produces this error: /private/tmp/pear/temp/intl/collator/collator_class.c:92: error: duplicate 'static' /private/tmp/pear/temp/intl/collator/collator_class.c:96: error: duplicate 'static' /private/tmp/pear/temp/intl/collator/collator_class.c:101: error: duplicate 'static' /private/tmp/pear/temp/intl/collator/collator_class.c:107: error: duplicate 'static' make: *** [collator/collator_class.lo] Error 1 ERROR: `make' failed It appears to have something to do with PHP 5.3 being bundled with Intl already. But how can I enable this extension, if I look in my PHP Info than I cannot find any reference to it...

  , Hello, everyone How can I change editing key-binding in Gnome on Ubuntu, and make it work like Emacs? Eg. When I'm chat with my friend, and I want to use Ctrl-a Ctrl-k to move my cursor go to the left of current line, and then cut current line, as OSX or Emacs. By default in Gnome Ubuntu, Ctrl-a is for "select all" and ctrl-k for nothing. Where does this key binding define? And how can I change this? I tried gnome-keybinding-properties and gsettings, find nothing. Maybe I have to compile something?

• Use Alladin eToken with ThunderBird and other tool

  I'm looking for an example on how to setup the eToken PRO Java device to work with Mozilla Thunderbird and with other Linux tool such as PAM logon. I installed distributed pkiclient-5.00.28-0.i386.RPM from the official product page eToken Pro but that tool only handles importing/exporting certificates on the device. I read a glance an old HOWTO from eToken on Linux, but I couldn't install pkcs11-lib for this device as recommended for Thunderbird use this crypto device. • Abysmal transfer speeds on gigabit network

  I am having trouble getting my Gigabit network to work properly between my desktop computer and my Windows Home Server. When copying files to my server (connected through my switch), I am seeing file transfer speeds of below 10MB/s, sometimes even below 1MB/s. The machine configurations are: Desktop Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Windows 7 Ultimate x64 2x WD Green 1TB drives in striped RAID 4GB RAM AB9 QuadGT motherboard Realtek RTL8810SC network adapter Windows Home Server AMD Athlon 64 X2 4GB RAM 6x WD Green 1,5TB drives in storage pool Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard Realtek 8111C network adapter Switch dLink Green DGS-1008D 8-port Both machines report being connected at 1Gbps. The switch lights up with green lights for those two ports, indicating 1Gbps. When connecting the machines through the switch, I am seeing insanely low speeds from WHS to the desktop measured with iperf: 10Kbits/sec (WHS is running iperf -c, desktop is iperf -s). Using iperf the other way (WHS is iperf -s, desktop iperf -c) speeds are also bad (~20Mbits/sec). Connecting the machines directly with a patch cable, I see much higher speeds when connecting from desktop to WHS (~300 Mbits/sec), but still around 10Kbits/sec when connecting from WHS to the desktop. File transfer speeds are also much quicker (both directions). But any subsequent changes to the file will not show up until i change the case of the file i'm asking for. Checking the IIS logs all indicate that the (internet) requests are all coming the correct client on the internet (i.e. not from some intermediate proxy). Since the file doesn't exist on the hard drive anymore, i conclude that there is a proxy. The requests serviced from this proxy are not logged in the IIS logs. The requests for new files are logged, and from the client IP, not a proxy IP. The proxy is case sensitivie. This does not sound like something Microsoft, or IIS, would do: - a transparent proxy - case-sensitivie - unlogged - surviving restarts of IIS - surviving in a cache for hours i can't believe that our customer's IIS is doing these things. i'm assuming there is some other transparent proxy in front of IIS. Or, does IIS have a transparent, unlogged, case-sensitive, memory based, proxy, that caches content for at least 7 hours? (Come Monday morning, IIS is serving the correct file, unlogged).

  Does anyone have a solution (that doesn't involve editing the hosts file) to block a particular URL from FireFox? Basic back story is that I'm trying to discipline myself. I'm spending FAR too much time over at Server Fault that I want to genuinely block the site from my work PC so that every time I find myself flicking to it during work time I can't see it, but I'd like to be able to disable it during my lunch break. (So I only spend 40 minutes a day there, rather than 4 hours). That said I don't want to block it at the router, nor for anyone else.

• Spell check doesn't work in protected forms in Word 2011 for Mac

  We have a form template many staff members use. We created it in Word 2004 for Mac, and I was told a shortcoming was there was no way to turn on the spell checker (a real hassle!). I hoped this would be fixed in 2011, but when I open the form and save it as a .docx, the spell check still doesn't work. Many menu choices, including Language and Spelling and Grammar are grayed. Is there any way to get spell check in a protected, fillable form?

• MASM Syntax Highlighting in C++ for Visual Studio 2010

  So, I had Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, and everything was great. However, I was confused, thought I wanted MASM, and installed the SDK. This causes strange problems for syntax highlighting. When I'm editing a C/C++ file, for instance, a lot of words (e.g., "data", "add", "sub", "mul", "div", "eax", etc.) are highlighted. At first, I thought I'd just learn to live with it, but it has gotten annoying. I could find nothing online, so, I deleted the MASM folder completely (method of uninstallation), uninstalled Visual Studio, and then installed it again. I firedit up, and the problem persists. • USB Audio device not selectable in settings after Camtasia Studio

  I tried to use Camtasia Studio 7 Recorder today, and when I selected the "Record Microphone and System audio" option, the recorder crashed, and then my sound settings icon disappeared. If I tried to open the Camtasia Recorder's Options or tried to select the option again, the program crashed. After holding the power button to force restart (so My settings wouldn't save, theoretically) the audio device was still not showing up in the sound settings, although it still is displayed under the "Hardware" tab, and is Functional. Or at least that's what windows thinks. I tried uninstalling Camtasia, and no sucess either. The USB audio device is labeled "C-Media USB Headphone Set". OS: Windows XP SP3 hu-HU Is there any way I could make it work again, like registry editing or something?

• Why is my keyboard acting like the Ctrl key is pressed when I hit an F key?

  So, I'm gradually getting the hang of the Kinesis Advantage Pro keyboard that my wife bought me for Christmas. I love it so far. But something very strange happened today. (Note: I actually have no idea if this problem has anything to do with the Kinesis keyboard per se. All I know is that I never encountered this problem until after replacing my old keyboard with the Kinesis.) It seems that if I press an F key (e.g., F2), the computer starts acting like I'm holding down the Ctrl key. For example if I click on a link in my web browser, it now opens in a new tab. Or if I hit A all the text in the document I'm editing gets selected. This behavior persists until I manually hit the Ctrl key again. Has anyone seen anything like this before? What could cause such behavior?

• Windows Vista: Folder options not working

  I'm running Windows Vista Service Pack 2. I have the Folder Options set to "Open each folder in the same window." (Organize | Folder Options | General). Each time I open a folder, it opens in a new window. How do I get it to open each folder in the same window? I have tried the following techniques with no success: 1. Expand number of MBAG entries in Registry. (The number is 40,000 now.) 2. Delete Bags and MBAG entries in Registry. (Rebooted machine after, still no success). 3. Change to "Open each folder in its own window". Saved, then changed back. 4. Under View tab, changed "Remember each folder's view settings": unchecked, Apply to Folders, checked, Apply to folders. 5. Applied application from Annoyances.org. Still no success. 6. Clicked on Reset Default Options, then OK. (Opening in same fold is a default option!) Still unsucessful. I want the folders to open in the same window, just like the options say.

  I've used SimpleOCR, which has a nice GUI for correcting errors. Unfortunately it makes a lot of errors! (and suffers other bugs and limitations) On the other hand Tesseract is more accurate but has no GUI at all. Is there a free OCR program for Windows which has a nice GUI and a low error rate? I want it to highlight suspect words (by OCR uncertainty, not just spell checking) and show the original (bitmap) word while I'm editing the OCRed word similar to what SimpleOCR does: Open-source would be best, followed by freeware, then trial / crippleware a long way behind.

I selected "Installer disc image," and it came up and said that it would use "Easy Install," I think I hit next, and then I went back changed my mind, and selected "I will install the operating system later." After finishing the wizard, I think it still went and ran Easy Install, because it auto-installed VMware tools and I never got to select anything for my windows setup. Then, when it was finished, all the hardware changes I had made were lost. The RAM was changed from 2 GB back to the default of 1 GB, my CD ROM drive was set back to "Use a Physical Drive" and "Connect at Power On", and the Floppy Drive was also set to "Connect at Power On", after I disabled them. I was trying to install Windows 7, and I wasn't sure if I could change the RAM settings after installation without needing to reactivate it, so I deleted the VM and tried to start over. This time, the "Installer disc image" had my Win7 image pre-selected, so I clicked "I will install it myself later," set my hardware again, and tried to boot off my CD. Again,it did an Easy Install, and reset my RAM and my drive settings. So I deleted it again and the third time it still had the Win7 image pre-selected, but this time I unplugged all the drives and let it try to boot off the empty harddrive and fail, and made sure it kept all my hardware settings. Then, I powered it off, put my Win7 image in the guest CD ROM, and powered it on. This time it finally let me run the installer and pick my language, and type a user name. This time when I powered it off it kept my hardware settings. I can duplicate the error by doing exactly the steps above. Creating a new VM, selecting my "Installer Image," hitting next, going back, selecting "I will Install it myself," and then finish the wizard, and customizing my hardware right before the end, setting the CD Rom drive to the same installer media, and setting "Connect on Power On." (If I start it without the CD ROM in the first time, it doesn't do it). When I power on, I'm not prompted for any install information (like language and user name), and when it runs the first timemy hardware choices are reset (like the RAM back to 1 GB). If it helps, I'm running VMware Workstation 7.0.1 build-227600 on Gentoo Linux

• how to make run cron on OSX 10.6.2?

  Note: this question is not about how to edit cron tab but how to make cron work I edited my cron using env EDITOR=joe crontab -e I entered 1 * * * * echo 'test' > /Users/radek/Backup/rationalvmware/test.txt and it does nothing although the cron is set up correctly. Checked via Cronnix and viewed the cron in /var/cron/tabs. Editing crontab using Cronnix gives me the same results. If I run echo 'test' > /Users/radek/Backup/rationalvmware/test.txt manually it creates a files as expected so I assume that the command I provide to cron is correct one. Is there anything special I have to do to make cron work on OSX? How can I check it the the cron is running. What's the equivalent of /var/log/messages on OSX? I can see in messages on SuSE that cron works.

  I'm setting up a vsftpd server on: Linux 2.6.32-26-server #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 10:28:32 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux When I set chroot_local_user=YES, there is no effect (I can still see / when I log in). There is nothing in syslog or /var/log/vsftpd.log to indicate what's wrong. I know that I'm editing the right conf file and that other settings do come into effect when I restart the daemon, because these work: ssl_enable=YES force_local_data_ssl=YES force_local_logins_ssl=YES Any idea what's wrong? Thanks. Edit: I've touched /etc/vsftpd.chroot_list for it to be empty (no chroot-denied users), and have added: chroot_list_enable=YES chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd.chroot_list Then to restart: sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service vsftpd restart Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the restart(8) utility, e.g. restart vsftpd vsftpd start/running, process 5606 Still no effect.

• Send option/alt key press to OS X connected from Windows via VNC?

  I recently started using a mac running Leopard Server remotely at work, using the RealVNC client to connect from my Windows XP workstation via the Leopard VNC server. As I need to do a fair amount of editing, I would like to have the keys mapped to the same positions as the macs I have been using for a long time. The Ctrl key works as Ctrl, and the Alt key works as Cmd, which is good, but I have had no success getting the Windows logo key to work as Option/Alt. It's seriously affecting my productivity in XCode and Terminal. Has anybody with the same setup solved this question, either by configuring Windows and/or the VNC client, or otherwise?

  I'm trying to duplicate a Linux server configuration to a windows server 2008R2 box. Basicaly this linux server acts as a router, but it is doing its job with only 1 interface (1 NIC). Here is the network configuration in place (I cannot change it) : INTERNET <== Router (local ip = 194.168.0.3) <== linux Server (ip : 194.168.0.2). The router is configured with a DMZ to 194.168.0.2, and only allow this IP to connect to internet (Cannot change this router configuration). The linux server is configured with a default gateway to 194.168.0.3, with the option : "Act as router". All other computer on the lan have this configuration (given by DHCP) : IP range : 194.168.0.X MASK : 255.255.255.0 Default gateway : 194.168.0.2 And everything is working perfectly. I'm trying to reproduce this way of routing with only one NIC from a windows server 2008R2, but it seems that you cannnot do it with only one NIC (all exemples I see are refering to 2 NIC with 2 different network). Does someone have an idea how to achieved this in Windows server 2008R2 ? Tx you for your help ! Fabian.

• NTDS Replication Warning (Event ID 2089)

  I have a simple little network with 3 AD servers in 2 sites. Site A has Win2k3 SP2 and Win2k SP4 servers, site B has a single Win2k3 SP2 server. All have been in place for at least 3 years now. Just last week I started getting Event 2089 "not backed up" warnings (example below) on both of the win2k3 servers. I understand what the message means, no need to send me links to the technet article explaining it. I'll improve my backups. What I'm more curious about is why did I just start getting this message now? Why haven't I been getting it for the past 3 years?!? Perhaps this is related: I recently decommissioned a few other sites and AD controllers (there used to be 3 more sites, each with their own controller). Don't worry, I did proper DCpromo exercises and made sure we didn't lose anything. But would shutting those down possibly be related to why I get this error now? This won't keep me awake at night but I am curious as to what changed... • Can't set screen brightness in Gentoo system

I compiled 3.10.7-r1 using genkernel all. Before the upgrade I did get a notice of "compatible issues for Nvdia users" from emerge but I still don't know the details. It there anyway to let me set the brightness? Then i found a ebuild app-laptop/nvdiabl-0.81 and tried to emerege nvidabl, I got this message: Your kernel does not support FB_BACKLIGHT. To enable you it you can enable any frame buffer with backlight control or nouveau. Note that you cannot use FB_NVIDIA with nvidia's proprietary driver Please check to make sure these options are set correctly. Failure to do so may cause unexpected problems. • How to make TimeMachine back up contents of any path or mounted volume

  I keep different types of data in different encrypted sparsebundle images (say, one for each client) which automatically mount upon login but can't be opened by anybody other than myself. So, after login I have a number of virtual volumes in /Volumes/ which keeps my client data both secure and organized. How do I include data inside these virtual Volumes in TimeMachine's backups, or data residing in any path on any partition/volume? I found a promising solution description at blog.eurocomp.info involving editing the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist but all I can get TimeMachine to do is backing up the sparsebundle files themselves. I want it to back up the files inside the mounted image, though - something like adding /Volumes/Client_abc/ to TimeMachine's search path. Please do not redirect my to this previous question as it doesn't solve the problem at all. Please also refrain from telling me why you think I should not want this answer as that will not solve anything either. Please lastly don't say "it can't be done" unless you can technically prove that claim.
