• Building Interactive User Interfaces with Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX: Refreshing An UpdatePanel With Jav

  The ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel provides a quick and easy way to implement a snappier, AJAX-based user interface in an ASP.NET WebForm. In a nutshell, UpdatePanels allow page developers to refresh selected parts of the page (instead of refreshing the entire page). Typically, an UpdatePanel contains user interface elements that would normally trigger a full page postback - controls like Buttons or DropDownLists that have their AutoPostBack property set to True. Such controls, when placed inside an UpdatePanel, cause a partial page postback to occur. On a partial page postback only the contents of the UpdatePanel are refreshed, avoiding the "flash" of having the entire page reloaded. (For a more in-depth look at the UpdatePanel control, refer back to the Using the UpdatePanel installment in this article series.) Triggering a partial page postback refreshes the contents within an UpdatePanel, but what if you want to refresh an UpdatePanel's contents via JavaScript? Ideally, the UpdatePanel would have a client-side function named something like Refresh that could be called from script to perform a partial page postback and refresh the UpdatePanel. Unfortunately, no such function exists. Instead, you have to write script that triggers a partial page postback for the UpdatePanel you want to refresh. • Tunlr Gives Non-US Residents Access to Hulu, Netflix, and More

  If you’re outside the US market and looking to enjoy US streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, and more, Tunlr is a free and simple service that will get you connected. Unlike other tools that are more expensive (both in price and in hardware/bandwidth overhead) like VPN services, Tunlr doesn’t set up a full tunnel but instead serves as an alternative DNS server that allows you to access previously blocked content. From the Tunlr FAQ: Tunlr does not provide a virtual private network (VPN). Tunlr is a DNS (domain name system) unblocking service. We’re using sophisticated technologies (a.k.a. the Tunlr Secret Sauce ©) to re-adress certain data envelopes, tricking the receiver into thinking the envelope originated from within the U.S. For these data envelopes, Tunlr is transparently creating a network tunnel from your location to our U.S.-based servers. • Why am I getting this "Connection to PulseAudio failed" error?

  I have a computer that runs Mythbuntu 11.10. It has an external USB Kenwood Digital Audio device. When I open up pavucontrol, I get this message: If I do as the message suggests and run start-pulseaudio-x11, I get this output: $ start-pulseaudio-x11 Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused How do I correct this error? Update: Somewhere during the course of doing the suggested tests in the comments, a new audio device has now become visible in my sound settings. I have not attached or made any new device, so this must be the result of of some setting change. The device I use and know about is the Kenwood Audio device. • Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 Group Fix 4 available

  Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 Group Fix 4 is available from My Oracle Support as Patch 13523301. This Group Fix contains a number of enhancements and keeps fixes up to date to the latest patch level. The enhancements included in this Group Fix include: UI Hints - In previous group fixes of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework the infrastructure to support UI Hints was introduced. This group fix completes the release of this functionality. Prior to this enhancement, products and implementers typically would build at least one UI Map per Business Object to display and/or maintain the object. Whilst, this can be generated using the UI Map maintenance function and stored, this enhancement allows additional tags and elements to be added to the Business Object directly to allow dynamic generation of the UI Map for maintenance and viewing the object. This reduces the need to generate and build a UI Map at all for that object. This will reduce maintenance effort of maintaining the product and implementation by eliminating the need to maintain the HTML for the UI Map. This also allows lower skilled personnel to maintain the system. Help and working examples are available from the View schema attributes and node names option from the Schema Tips dashboard zone. For example: Note: For examples of the hints, refer to an of the following Business Objects F1_OutcomeStyleLookup, F1-TodoSumEmailType, F1-BOStatusReason or F1-BIGeneralMasterConfig. Setting batch log file names -  By default the batch infrastructure supplied with the Oracle Utilities Application Framework sets the name and location of the log files to set values. • How do I install Flash Player 11 debug version in 11.10?

  I want to replace my existing browser plugin Flash Player with the debug version, and update to FP11 while I'm at it. I also want to install the debug version of the projector player and make it the default player for SWF files outside of the browser. First the browser plugin version. I've downloaded the installer from the official site, but I'm not sure what to do with the contents. There is a usr folder, and I presume that I am to write the contents of this to /usr. There is also a file called libflashplayer.so, and I have no idea what to do with that. For download for the projector player has confused me further because it only contains one file: flashplayerdebugger. I don't know what to do with this. If there is a way to install these softwares through apt-get or the Software Center I would love to hear about it, I have only found solutions for the standard player, but otherwise could someone please tell me what to do with these files? Update Ok, so I've figured out that if I dump the flashplayerdebugger file into /usr/lib/ I can point Eclipse at it and compile and test SWFs as expected from inside Eclipse. But how can I set that application as the default player when I select an SWF in Nautilus?

• LibreOffice - Can't drag and replace images [LibreOffice 3.5 and 3.6, Ubuntu 12.04]

  My wife uses LibreOffice to create catalogues of a couple hundred items and then converts it to PDF. Man we love LibreOffice! Anyway I set up Windows-7 and Mint-14-Mate dual boot for her to ease into Linux. Today she was ready for Ubuntu and so I did a clean install on her machine. Everything was smooth but today when she tried to work she ran into an issue... She used to be able to download a folder full of images to use in her catalogues and then update her catalogues by replacing old images with new ones. It was so simple - Open an old catalogue, save with a new date, drag and drop replace images of items that no longer exist. The drag and drop process would scale the image and then crop it horizontally or vertically to fit. Now that I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 for her she can no longer replace images, it just does nothing... If she drags the image to the left or right of the original it appears next to the original so I know d&d works, unfortunately it does not resize or crop the image. I tried this on my laptop and my desktop... same thing! I then tried updating the LibreOffice to 3.6, no change. I then tried opening a virtual machine windows xp and Mint 14 on this computer and tried with 3.6 in those operating systems and it worked. Can anyone help? I have a lot of hope that there is an answer because Mint is based on Ubuntu/Debian and that distro can perform this task successfully! Sorry about writing a book....

  Good evening. This problem occured when trying to update using the update manager. A problem occured so I cleared all the cache and tried to update once again this time in terminal, and it spat out: dpkg: error: parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 6449 missing package name After opening up 'status' with gedit and going to line 6449, I found that nothing was on that line but the following was before and after it. This package contains the Mono System.Configuration library for CLI 4.0. Original-Maintainer: Debian Mono Group <[email protected])oth.debian.org> Homepage: http://www.mono-project.com/ <<<<---- LINE 6449 Package: bzip2 Status: install ok installed Priority: optional Section: utils Installed-Size: 160 Maintainer: Ubuntu Developers <[email protected]> <<<<--- LINE 6449 is obviously not on the file, but I can't see whats wrong here? anybody have an idea?   If you are developing MS MPI applications with Visual Studio 2010, you are probably tired of following some tedious steps for every new C++ project that you create, similar to the following:1. In Solution Explorer, right-click YourProjectName, then click Properties to open the Property Pages dialog box.2. Expand Configuration Properties and then under VC++ Directories place the cursor at the beginning of the list that appears in the Include Directories text box and then specify the location of the MS MPI C header files, followed by a semicolon, e.g.C:\Program Files\Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 SDK\Include;3. Still under Configuration Properties and under VC++ Directories place the cursor at the beginning of the list that appears in the Library Directories text box and then specify the location of the Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 SDK library file, followed by a semicolon, e.g.if you want to build/debug 32bit application:C:\Program Files\Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 SDK\Lib\i386;if you want to build/debug 64bit application:C:\Program Files\Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 SDK\Lib\amd64;4. Under Configuration Properties and then under Linker, select Input and place the cursor at the beginning of the list that appears in the Additional Dependencies text box and then type the name of the MS MPI library, i.e.msmpi.lib;5. • Extending UPK with Enablement Packs

  We've mentioned in earlier posts that UPK Development keeps the tool up to date through the use of Enable Service Packs (ESP'S). Regular releases ensure that the UPK Developer supports updates to targeted applications as well as new Java updates. Installing an ESP is quick and easy. • Download the latest ESP from My Oracle Support (requires a My Oracle Support account). • Run the setup for each client machine that uses the UPK Developer • Run the Library Updates from one of the clients (multi-user only) Enablement Pack 1 for UPK 3.6.1 contains new features such as a new Tabbed Gateway, FireFox 3.6 support for the Player and SmartHelp, and several new target application versions. But a very exciting feature that is part of this ESP is now available to all Oracle E-Business Suite customers. Until now, a requirement for EBS customers who wish to record UPK content is to install delivered library files (CUSTOM.pll and ODPN.pll) on to the Oracle Application Server. These files were required to present context information to the UPK Developer so that content can be launched in a context sensitive manner. This requirement involved the Oracle system administrator to transfer, install and compile these libraries into the system. Usually a simple process, however, we understood the need to streamline the procedure. With ESP 1 for UPK 3.6.1, these pll files are no longer required. Now, a simple procedure from within the EBS application can make context available to the UPK recorder. From the System Profile, search for UPK: Change the Site field to Enable UPK Recording. Save the Form. Context information will now be made available to the UPK Recorder without involving the System Administrator or DBA. The setting you see here makes context available to all client machines recording content with UPK and does not affect the performance of your EBS application.

  Happy Friday, everyone! Our tip this week is from an excellent white paper written by our own Greg King titled Oracle VM 3: Building a Demo Environment using Oracle VM VirtualBox. In it, Greg gives you everything you need to know to set up Oracle VM Server inside of Oracle VM VirtualBox for testing and demoing. The section we're highlighting below is on how to configure the network interfaces of your virtual machines: VirtualBox comes with a few different types of network interfaces that can be used to allow communication between the VM guests and the host operating system, including network interfaces that will allow the VM guests to communicate with local and wide area networks accessed from your laptop or personal computer. However, for the purpose of the demonstration environment we will limit the network communication to include access just between your desktop and the virtual machines being managed by VirtualBox. The install process for Oracle VM VirtualBox creates a single host-only network device on your laptop or personal computer. Using the host-only network device will allow you to open a browser on your desktop to access the Oracle VM Manager running within the VirtualBox VM guest. The device will only allow network traffic between the VM guests and your host operating system, but nothing outside the confines of your laptop or personal computer. We will need to add a second host-only network since the Oracle VM Server appliance has both eth0 and eth1 configured. You can choose to use eth1 on the Oracle VM Servers or not use them – the choice is yours. But, at least the host side network device will exist if you decide to use it. • What needs to be done to port a Windows Flash game to Android?

  My team has developed a game using Flash (with Lua embeded) that targets Windows. And we want to port that game to Android (also iOS in the future). It's acceptable to rewrite the Flash part of client. And some other team in our company recommended Unity3D to replace the Flash part. Since we have no experience in Android/iOS development, we would need to learn some new tool/language anyway. So we would like that learning still be useful after the porting and when we starting a new game. Any thoughts? Edits: I think it is worth noticing the background of the game : the project is started by a tester and developer, both without knowing much about flex and actionscript. They built the game while learning, so most of the code is hard to maintain. I and other two developers joined the project after a year or so when one has leave (and the other be our manager). The other two developers are just graduates with little experience and little knowledge of flex. I am good at the server part and the c# language. Based on the fact that the code is hard to maintain (and we do need to change a lot of code to make the game easier to playe in a mobile device), and I am good at c# (and learning). I still tend to do the porting with Unity, which could get better performance and possibly save time.

  Welcome to ADF Mobile team's weblog.  My name is Joe Huang - I am the product manager for ADF Mobile.  Oracle ADF Mobile is a part of Oracle's Application Development Framework (ADF) that support the development of enterprise/business applications that run on mobile devices.  The development tool for this framework is of course Oracle JDeveloper.  As some of you may know, we currently support the development of mobile browser-based application - this part of product is called ADF Mobile Browser.  Additionally, we are close to release a technology preview of ADF Mobile Client, which supports development of on-device, disconnect capable mobile applications.  What's truly unique about ADF Mobile development process is that it's a very visual and declarative experience, while still allow power Java developers to completely extend the framework to their liking.  The framework also provides a rich set of services needed by an enterprise-grade mobile application - these services would literally take years to implement if they are to be built from the ground up.  However, by using JDeveloper and ADF Mobile, you get the entire framework at your service!In the coming entries, the ADF Mobile product development team will publish any news, best practices, our observation on mobile technology trends, or just our experiences in playing with "gadgets".  Be sure to check back on this page!Sincerely,Joe HuangOracle

• The Windows Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) and the Windows Azure Training Kit (WATK)

  Windows Azure is a platform that allows you to write software, run software, or use software that we've already written. We provide lots of resources to help you do that - many can be found right here in this blog series. There are two primary resources you can use, and it's important to understand what they are and what they do. The Windows Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) Actually, this isn't one resource. We have SDK's for multiple development environments, such as Visual Studio and also Eclipse, along with SDK's for iOS, Android and other environments. Windows Azure is a "back end", so almost any technology or front end system can use it to solve a problem. The SDK's are primarily for development. In the case of Visual Studio, you'll get a runtime environment for Windows Azure which allows you to develop, test and even run code all locally - you do not have to be connected to Windows Azure at all, until you're ready to deploy. You'll also get a few samples and codeblocks, along with all of the libraries you need to code with Windows Azure in .NET, PHP, Ruby, Java and more. • SQL SERVER – Cardinality Estimation and Performance – SQL in Sixty Seconds #072

  Yesterday I wrote blog post based on my latest Pluralsight course on learning SQL Server 2014. I discussed newly introduced cardinality estimation in SQL Server 2014 and how it improves the performance of the query. The cardinality estimation logic is responsible for quality of query plans and majorly responsible for improving performance for any query. This logic was not updated for quite a while, but in the latest version of SQL Server 2104 this logic is re-designed. The new logic now incorporates various assumptions and algorithms of OLTP and warehousing workload. I hope my earlier blog post clearly explained how new cardinality estimation logic improves performance. If not, I suggest you watch following quick video where I explain this concept in extremely simple words. • For Oracle's JD Edwards Customers--IT's Getting Better All The Time

Look for the print copy in your mailbox or access the online version here. I entered the software industry when I joined JD Edwards in 1999. The next six years were a wild roller coaster ride for employees, partners, and--most unfortunately--for many of our customers. (Not entirely my fault BTW). In this Special Edition, I immediately gravitated to Aaron Lazenby's interview with Lyle Ekdahl, Group VP and General Manager of Oracle JD Edwards, "Better All The Time".  I met Lyle in 2003 when he joined PeopleSoft to guide JD Edwards' CRM development. He dropped by my cube (it was a double-wide cube, mind you) to explain his strategy. It was an intense first impression. Passionate, competent, personable. From my discussions with partners and customers, it is clear that for Oracle's JD Edwards customers it is getting better all the time. Now I've got that darn Beatle's song stuck in my head...
