• Daemon for moving files between partitions?

  I have a system with Ubuntu installed in 20GB and windows in 100 GB, two partitions - each of 100GB using NTFS. While using DC++ (multiple downloading of big file) I used to get message that system is running out of memory. Is there any way to make a deamon which will be checking the Ubuntu partition so that if its used space goes up to a certain amount (let's say 18 GB) it will automatically start a moving file from this drive to another drive (let's assume it will pick the file from movie folder or largest media file from this drive to move)? Or it prompt to ask from user which file to move? Is there any program which can do this for me? If not, can you suggest something to read so that I could make it?

• ubuntu 14.04 slow

• What is the best way of testing Ubuntu?

  I'm a little confused as to whether I should install Ubuntu on its own partition on my hard drive, use VirtualBox or another virtualization package to install it, or use Wubi to install it directly on top of my current OS (Win 7). I definitely want to learn and use Ubuntu, so this is not just for playing around with it. Also, if I choose to partition, should I partition the hard drive myself or should I let the Ubuntu installation menu do it for me? I understand that I am going to need a main partition, for Ubuntu's core components, and also a swap partition. Then there is the option to add a partition for "home"- I don't understand what combination of these partitioning options I should choose, or whether it is better to partition in Windows before I install Ubuntu or just partition my hard drive when I install Ubuntu itself

• unable to boot from live USB!

  Linux noob here. I was messing around with my new dual-boot (win7 and the latest ubuntu, 12.04 I think?) Long story short, I deleted some partitions that I shouldn't have. When I boot up the machine, I get: error: no such partition. grub rescue _ I know that I could probably fix this by booting from the live USB. But I can't boot from the live USB either! On startup, I can get "boot from drive" options by pressing F12. (This is how I installed Ubuntu in the first place.) But when I select the USB drive, I get this error: error: no such device: [long string of letters and numbers]. grub rescue _ I've searched around for a fix but most threads addressing the first problem suggest booting from live drive. And I can't do that! Any help much appreciated.

• My Computer in Ubuntu?

  I was wondering if Ubuntu has an equivalent to the Windows feature "My Computer", which lists all available drives/storage devices. Typically, My Computer shows C:, which can be opened to view all of your directories and files. At this point, it is very similar to Ubuntu's Home Folder, but I am looking for something that allows me to view/select all available HDD's/Partitions. Here's my reason: I found a 6gb IDE HDD in my basement, and got an IDE cable for it. My desktop computer has a SATA drive in it, but has an IDE slot, so I wanted to plug it in and see what might be on it. The drive seems to be recognized in BIOS, but I can't find it in Ubuntu to view files, and Ubuntu is the only OS on that particular computer. If anyone has any ideas as to how to view the contents of that drive WITHOUT formatting it or tampering with the contents in any way, I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

• Windows 7 and Ubuntu Boot issue

  I had the idea to dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu and what I did was the following: Made a clean install of win 7 using all of my hard drive, next I used the Ubuntu live cd and gparted to partition my drive to be the following: /dev/sda1 ext4 20GB (Linux root) /dev/sda2 ntfs 100GB(Win7) /dev/sda3 ext4 350GB(Home) /dev/sda4 extended 4GB(swap) The thing is, when installing ubuntu I deleted the partition win 7 creates for its boot sector and recovery and then resized the drive to look like what I mentioned, and Ubuntu installed GRUB to the MBR. When GRUB boots I can see Ubuntu but not Windows, how can I chainload it? Or should I fix the windows mbr with the windows 7 installation disk and try to set the dual boot from there? I don't really care which one of the 2 bootloaders I end up using, I just want the dual boot to work out. Thanks

  When I install Ubunut 12.04 I'll be presented with three options - install ubuntu alongside windows, replace windows with ubuntu and 'something else'. If I choose 'replace windows' then I can not be able to make a swap space. So what then. I've 1GB ram. And if I choose 'replace windows' will my only C drive get replaced or what'll happen? If only C drive is affected then will data on the other 2 drives get saved? Again if yes, how can I access it (on which drive of ubuntu) after installing ubuntu?

• Live USB does not work

  I've made live USB using these "Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.1.9", "unetbootin-windows-581", "YUMI-0.0.8.0" & "LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.18" in "FAT32" format, but unfortunately I could not boot using the pen-drive. My BIOS supports boot from USB drive. When I am booting from the live usb, it just show black screen with a blinking "_", but nothing happens after that( I have waited more than 10 minutes, but nothing happens). So, can anyone please help me on this? [Additional Info.: I've made Bootable USB using PowerISO and that booted, but it was not possible to access the USB normally afterwards,because PowerISO formatted the USB Drive as RAW(or anything I don't know) and it became 8GB to 700MB, afterwards I had to format it using MiniTool Partition manager.]

• updating from 8.04 to a newer version?

  I have an old system. It doesn't have a DVD drive, and I think the cd drive is a bit wonky. The only disk that I have been able to get to install is an old (official) 8.04 Kubuntu disk. No disk that I've burned on a few systems works. They check out, but they don't seem to survive the install (another issue). I thought once I got a version on that I could update over the web, but no luck. It appears EOL. No updates seem to be available, or software to install. Is there a way? I'd like to get it to as new a version as possible. The next step would be to pull the drive and get a new one, but I'd rather not.

I do not want to use as a "trial version", or to set up a dual boot or run in a virtual system.   Hello, I am trying to use JAAS to authenticate my users. My project is in GWT v2, which runs jetty. I use eclipse for development. • User Guide to Dropbox Shared Folders

  Dropbox is an incredibly useful tool for keeping all your files synced between your computers and the cloud.  Here we’re going to look at how you can keep all of your team on the same page with Dropbox shared folders. Creating a Shared Folder Setting up a shared folder in Dropbox is easy.  Add the files you want to share to a folder in Dropbox on your computer, then right-click in the folder, select Dropbox, and then choose Share This Folder.   Alternately, log into your Dropbox account online, click the drop-down menu beside the folder you want to share, and click Share this folder. Now, enter the email addresses of the people you want to share the folder with, and optionally enter a message explaining why you’re sharing the folder. The people you invite will receive an email inviting them to view and join the shared folder.  If they haven’t signed up for Dropbox, they can directly signup; otherwise, they can simply log into their Dropbox account and start adding or editing files. Shared folders have a slightly different icon in your Dropbox.  Notice the shared folder on the left has an icon with 2 people, while the folder on the right that is not shared, shows previews of its contents. See Your Shared Folder’s History Whenever your collaborators with your shared folders add or change files, you will see a tooltip notification telling you what changed. You can also view the changes online.  Log into your Dropbox account in your browser and select the Events tab.  This shows all changes to your Dropbox, but you can view only the changes in your shared folder by selecting its name on the left sidebar. Now you can see all recent changes to your folder, and can also see who added or removed each file.   On the bottom of the page, you can even add a comment that all the collaborators will see. If someone deleted a file you still need, you can restore it by clicking its link in this online history.  Or, you can view any deleted files by right-clicking in your Dropbox folder in Explorer.  Select Dropbox, and then click Show Deleted Files.   Get Notified When a Change is Made You’re not always in front of your computer; you’ve got a life beyond your projects, after all (at least hopefully).  If you really want to stay connected to what’s happening with your project, though, you can easily do that no matter where you are. Your shared Dropbox folder’s history page offers an RSS feed of all changes to the folder.  Click  the Subscribe to this feed hyperlink. Now, in the popup that opens, click “Copy to clipboard” so you can use this RSS feed. You can subscribe to RSS feeds through many web browsers, email clients, dedicated feed readers, and more.  In Firefox, Internet Explorer 7/8, or Opera, you can paste the feed address into your address bar and subscribe to the feed directly in your browser.   However, subscribing to the feed in a desktop application won’t help you much when you’re away from your computer.  One great option is to subscribe in the popular Google Reader.  Then you can check your feed from any browser, on any computer or mobile device. To add your Dropbox feed to Google Reader, log into Google Reader (link below), click Add a subscription on the top left, paste your RSS feed from Dropbox, and click Add.   Now you can see any changes to files or folders in Google Reader. You can even add your feed to your iGoogle homepage.  Click the Add it Now button on the right in the front page of Google Reader to add your feeds to iGoogle.   Now you can see updates on your files from your homepage.  If you’re using a different computer, just login to your Google account to see what’s happening. You can also access your Google Reader feeds from many programs and apps for most major Smartphones including iPhone, Windows Phone, and Blackberry. Receive a Tweet or Text When Changes are Made If you’re a hyper-connected individual, chances are you send and receive tweets on the go.  If so, this might be the best way for you to get notified when changes are made to your Dropbox shared folder.  To do this, first create a new Twitter account to publish your changes through.  If you don’t want the whole world to see your updates, click Settings and set your new Twitter account to Private. Once the new account is created, follow it with your normal Twitter account so you’ll see updates. Now, let’s publish our Dropbox RSS feed to Twitter.  Create an account with Twitterfeed (link below). Once your account is setup, add your feed to it.  Name your feed, and enter your Feed address from Dropbox.  Click Advanced Settings to make your feed work just like you want. In Advanced Settings, change the frequency to “Every 30 mins” to make sure you’re updated on changes as quick as possible.  You can also change other settings if you like. Click “Continue to Step 2”, and then click Twitter under the available services to add your account. Make sure your signed into your new Twitter account, and then click Authenticate Twitter. Allow the application. Now, finally, click Create Service. Whenever a change is made, you will receive a tweet via your new Twitter account.  And since you can receive tweets via text message or many mobile applications, you’ll never be very far away from your Dropbox changes!   Conclusion Dropbox shared folders are a great way to keep your whole team working together on the same files in a project.  And with these handy tricks, you can keep up with your shared files wherever you are!   I have a module that builds an app called MyApp. I have another that builds some testcases for that app, called MyAppTests. They both build their own APKs, and they both work fine from within my IDE. I'd like to build them using ant so that I can take advantage of continuous integration. Building the app module works fine. I'm having difficulty getting the Test module to compile and run. Using Christopher's tip from a previous question, I used android create test-project -p MyAppTests -m ../MyApp -n MyAppTests to create the necessary build files to build and run my test project. This seems to work great (once I remove an unnecessary test case that it constructed for me and revert my AndroidManifest.xml to the one I was using before it got replaced by android create), but I have two problems. I'm not sure it's the right thing to do, but I copied the missing libraries (roboguice and gson) from the MyApp/libs directory to the MyAppTests/libs directory and everything seems to compile fine. But that leads to the second problem, which I'm currently stuck on. • Can't build and run an android test project created using "ant create test-project" when tested proj

  I have a module that builds an app called MyApp. I have another that builds some testcases for that app, called MyAppTests. They both build their own APKs, and they both work fine from within my IDE. I'd like to build them using ant so that I can take advantage of continuous integration. Building the app module works fine. I'm having difficulty getting the Test module to compile and run. Using Christopher's tip from a previous question, I used android create test-project -p MyAppTests -m ../MyApp -n MyAppTests to create the necessary build files to build and run my test project. This seems to work great (once I remove an unnecessary test case that it constructed for me and revert my AndroidManifest.xml to the one I was using before it got replaced by android create), but I have two problems. • Update Manager unable to get updates

  In last few days my Ubuntu 11.10 update manager is unable to get new updates. When I checked update log I saw that for couple of updates it says "Network isn't available". For other updates it downloaded logs and and internet connection also works fine. Unable to attached screenshot due to SPAM prevention policy.   In yesterday’s blog post we learned the importance of the NewSQL. In this article we will understand the role of Cloud in Big Data Story What is Cloud? Cloud is the biggest buzzword around from last few years. Everyone knows about the Cloud and it is extremely well defined online. In this article we will discuss cloud in the context of the Big Data. Cloud computing is a method of providing a shared computing resources to the application which requires dynamic resources. These resources include applications, computing, storage, networking, development and various deployment platforms. The fundamentals of the cloud computing are that it shares pretty much share all the resources and deliver to end users as a service.  Examples of the Cloud Computing and Big Data are Google and Amazon.com. Both have fantastic Big Data offering with the help of the cloud. We will discuss this later in this blog post. There are two different Cloud Deployment Models: 1) The Public Cloud and 2) The Private Cloud Public Cloud Public Cloud is the cloud infrastructure build by commercial providers (Amazon, Rackspace etc.) creates a highly scalable data center that hides the complex infrastructure from the consumer and provides various services. Private Cloud Private Cloud is the cloud infrastructure build by a single organization where they are managing highly scalable data center internally. Hybrid cloud gives best of the both the world as it combines multiple cloud deployment models together. Cloud and Big Data – Common Characteristics There are many characteristics of the Cloud Architecture and Cloud Computing which are also essentially important for Big Data as well. They highly overlap and at many places it just makes sense to use the power of both the architecture and build a highly scalable framework. Here is the list of all the characteristics of cloud computing important in Big Data Scalability Elasticity Ad-hoc Resource Pooling Low Cost to Setup Infastructure Pay on Use or Pay as you Go Highly Available Leading Big Data Cloud Providers There are many players in Big Data Cloud but we will list a few of the known players in this list. Amazon Amazon is arguably the most popular Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider. The history of how Amazon started in this business is very interesting. They started out with a massive infrastructure to support their own business. Gradually they figured out that their own resources are underutilized most of the time. They decided to get the maximum out of the resources they have and hence  they launched their Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) service in 2006. Their products have evolved a lot recently and now it is one of their primary business besides their retail selling. Amazon also offers Big Data services understand Amazon Web Services. Here is the list of the included services: Amazon Elastic MapReduce – It processes very high volumes of data Amazon DynammoDB – It is fully managed NoSQL (Not Only SQL) database service Amazon Simple Storage Services (S3) – A web-scale service designed to store and accommodate any amount of data Amazon High Performance Computing – It provides low-tenancy tuned high performance computing cluster Amazon RedShift – It is petabyte scale data warehousing service Google Though Google is known for Search Engine, we all know that it is much more than that. Google Compute Engine – It offers secure, flexible computing from energy efficient data centers Google Big Query – It allows SQL-like queries to run against large datasets Google Prediction API – It is a cloud based machine learning tool Other Players Besides Amazon and Google we also have other players in the Big Data market as well. Microsoft is also attempting Big Data with the Cloud with Microsoft Azure. Additionally Rackspace and NASA together have initiated OpenStack. The goal of Openstack is to provide a massively scaled, multitenant cloud that can run on any hardware. Thing to Watch The cloud based solutions provides a great integration with the Big Data’s story as well it is very economical to implement as well. However, there are few things one should be very careful when deploying Big Data on cloud solutions.
