• How to run webcam software only when I am not home (phone is not on the LAN)?

  Currently I've got cron starting Motion when I typically leave for work, and then killing it when I typically get home, so I can watch my cat/burglars/etc. But it would be better if it could detect when I'm actually home and disable the webcam during those times, and enable it at other times. I was thinking my presence could be detected by my Android phone joining the LAN. So something like A script that checks every few minutes whether my phone's hostname or MAC address is currently on the LAN or A Tasker script on my phone that contacts the home computer in some way (simple web server?) when it joins a certain SSID or ... Any better ideas or advice about how to implement one of these?

• How to disable/destroy forever Chrome's "print preview" option?

  This question seems to come up a lot (pretty much every time a new version of Chrome is released). Previous answers such as these no longer apply (or don't work for Mac), however: How do I get the "old style" system print dialog for Chrome on Windows? Disable Chromes Ctrl+P handling of printing Sadly, Google seems intent on shoving this broken preview screen down our throats (The thought of someone not want to use their nonstandard, feature-poor alternative to a systemwide service is inconceivable to them, apparently), and the "disable" flag no longer seems to exist in recent versions. Anyone know how to disable it in modern versions of the browser, which no longer include this option under "chrome://flags?" (OS-X specifically?)

• opening a GUID usb stick in windows 7

  so I have a mac which I have files on. I put in a GUID formatted usb stick and dropped some files on to it. took the stick and plugged in to my netbook with win7. In Devices & Printers it shows up. It also appears in "safely remove hardware". no actual letter or device when i search for it in other ways. Question - how do I access the files of my GUID usb stick on my windows 7 netbook? thanks

• cant access my local web server with the external IP

  I havent been able to find a solution to my particular problem. I have a MAC which I set up as a web server and configured my router to forward to the local IP. When trying to access my site from outside, it does say "It works!", however, when I call a simple Hello World PHP script that I have, I am getting an error that the page could not be opened. I did enable PHP on my machine so thats not the problem. I really have no idea how can I access - I followed so many tutorials and did everything correctly. My router is a Linksys WRT160N if it matters at all. In the port forwarding section, I selected to forward

• What are my options for a secure External File Share in Server 2008 R2?

  Hi, I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine installed on a home network with a number of files that need to be shared in a few different scenarios. I would like for all three scenarios to have a solution with some sort of encyption to protect the data during transfer. Scenario 1: I need to access files from my laptop (Mac OSX) or another computer outside of the network. This option seems like the easy one to answer in that I could use LogMeIn, the windows VPN, etc. to create such a connection. Scenario 2: I need to provide access to another user with minimal installation / configuration on his or her end. This makes me think of the new FTP 7.5 provided with Server 2008 R2 but i'm not sure of the details: Does it support SSH or some other form of encryption?, can an OSX user connect?, etc. My question here is what are my options? I really just don't know where to get started...

  I am running a php site on my apache server (Mac). I am having trouble displaying images on the site when I access it externally or from another computer on the same server. If I try to access the image directly. website.com/image.jpg I get a broken link icon and can't display the image. Any ideas what could cause this? My images are embedded using a style.css file. background-image:url(image.jpg);

• I can't get an IP address from a VirtualBox VM on OSX from some routers (ie Internet cafes)

  On OSX 10.7.3, VirtualBox, using bridged adapter. Everything on the networking side works perfectly as expected in some networking environments, like my home router and some cafes. In others, I can't get an IP address over DHCP, and I don't know why. I suspect there is some setting on the router that is preventing me, or I have some issue with my MAC adress. When it's not working, in syslog, I'll see a few DHCPDISCOVER messages as my VM tries to find a DHCP server, and after a while, "No DHCPOFFERS received" And when I go to a "good" router, a simple "service network restart" is all I need to get an IP. Any ideas?

• My server hostname doesn't work? [on hold]

  I've got a raspberry pi running raspbian server edition. It's a modified debian that runs well on the rPi. My problem is that the only way I can ssh into it with putty is through the static ip. My router doesn't recognize the hostname; it shows the mac address as the name. This causes the pi not to show my website online (I think). The only way I've gotten it to work is using my other linux server to forward using virtual hosts, and that has to use the ip address, too. However, now that I have my other server off, the website doesn't work and I can't ssh (or find it anywhere on the network) using the hostname.

• Best way for an external (remote) graphics designer to style ASP.NET MVC 4 app?

  My customer has his own graphics designer he wants to use to style his web application we're building in ASP.NET MVC 4. Our solution is in Bitbucket, but if he can't run it what choices do we have? I doubt he uses Visual Studio 2012. One idea is for us to publish to our solution to a file system, send it to him, have him create a local IIS website on his machine (assuming he isn't using a Mac). Mocking data or pointing to a test SQL in Azure isn't a problem. Then he can make changes to .css and .cshtml files. Will this even work? The point is that he needs to be able to test his changes. I know he can modify the views and just check-in. But he needs to deliver a working design. So it seems inefficient. The graphics designer will have access to our test site so he can see how it works, what data we have and fields. Another idea is for him to build a static mock site using just HTML/CSS. Later I'd integrate his styles into customer's solution, split his html into partial views which we use and add Razor syntax. Again, we'd like to leverage graphics designer for all of this. Is there a best practice documented around this subject? How do other teams deal with this situation?

When the PC is directly connected to the router, everything works fine, Ubuntu (14.04) starts normally, and the Internet connection runs inmediately. • Objective-C As A First OOP Language?

  I am just finishing the second semester of my CS degree. So far I learned C, all the fundamental algorithms and data structures (e.g., searching, sorting, linked lists, heaps, hash tables, trees, graphs, etc). Next year we'll start with OOP, using either Java or C++. Recently I got some ideas for some iPhone apps and got itchy to start working on them. However I heard some bad things about Objectice-C in the past, so I am wondering if learning it as my first OOP language could be a problem. Not to mention that I think it will be hard to find books/online courses that teach basic OOP concepts using Objective-C to illustrate the concepts (as opposed to books using Java or C++, which are plenty), so this could be another problem. In summary: should I start learning Objective-C and OOP concepts right now by my own, or wait one more semester until I learn Java/C++ at university and then jump into Objective-C?   Does LearnDevNow offers a useful subscription for .NET video and text reference training material or to learn .NET? I could not find a review of www.learnnowonline.com/learndevnow I've been doing research about places that offer .NET / ASP.NET / C# / LINQ / SQL / JQuery video training that provide excellent material for developers. Kind of like a Lynda.com for back end development. However, I have not find one place that offers quality material that is easily accessible for the user, and that is priced competitive. This is what I'm looking for: Online Video tutorials with free future updates (videos that can be accessed on any device ie: android portable devices, mac / ipad, linux machines) Printable courseware (ie PDFs so that you can take notes, print if necessary, and read in a tablet in case you don;t have internet access) labs, and easy to access code Pre/Post Assessments/Exams for each training to keep track of your progress and what you have learned/skills. (Appdev used to offer this but it was way too expensive (thousands for each training ie 1k for each. I paid about five thousand at Appdev, and now I regret that purchase), and after a few years/months the training became obsolete - outdated) I looked at learnnowonline.com/learndevnow but it seems that their courseware / text reference material can only be accessed online, and don't know if their videos work in all mobile devices, and browsers (Safari, Chrome, IE, Opera, Firefox) Also, it seems Appdev not longer exist and now is called " AppDev is now LearnNowPlus : www.learnnowonline.com/appdev That site not longer offers prices. I tried to find reviews but could not find any. Does anyone know, or can share a review about some of these type of online training service providers? I would appreciate your feedback on this, and if you can share your past experiences with their service or similar/better services that would even be better. Thanks.

  Me and a friend of mine have been wanting to remake one of our favorite games of all time (007: Nightfire) for a long time now. However, remaking a game likes this is really complicated because of the rights to the Bond-franchise. That site was created months ago, and by doing so we have found some great people (modelers, level designers, etc.) that want to help, but our plans have changed a little bit. Our current plan is to create a multiplayer-only remake of the original game, removing all the Bond-references so that the rights shouldn't be a problem anymore. We still want to create the game using the UDK and SteamWorks for both PC and Mac. Currently there's 3 things I need to find out: The costs of creating an arcade shooter like this. We want to use crowdfunding to fund the project. The best way to manage a project like this over the internet. Our current team consists of people all over the world, and we need a central place to discuss, collaborate and store our files. The best place to find suitable people for this project. We already have some modelers and level designers but we also need animators, artists, programmers, etc. I believe creating an arcade game like this with a small team is feasible. The game in a nutshell: ±10 maps, ±20 weapons, ±12 game modes, weapon/armor pickups, grapple hook gadget, no ADS, uses SteamWorks, online matchmaking, custom games, AI bots, appearance selection, level progression using XP (no unlocks), achievements. Does anyone know where to start? Any help is appreciated.

• Davicom Semiconductor, Inc. 21x4x DEC-Tulip not detected by Wireshark but IP operational

  Recently flipped to Ubuntu 11.10 on a Dell 4300 (Intel). Getting IP address and no issues (ping/surf) but Wireshark unable to detect eth0 interface. I see references in forums to blacklist tulip but looks like I am running dmfe. Not sure if the blacklist is required and where to go from here. Maybe Driver update? Got a little lost looking in that area.
