  BizTalk Map Editor (Mapper) is a good editor, especially in the last 2010 version of the BizTalk. But still sometimes it cannot do the tasks easily. It is time for the Xslt code, It is time to remember that the maps are executed by the Xslt engine.  Right-click the Mapper Grid (a field between the source and target schemas) and choose Properties /Custom XSLT Path.  Input here a name of the file with Xslt code. Only this code will be executed, forget the picture in the Mapper, all those links and functoids.  Let’s see the real-life example. There are two source Addresses. One is on the top level and the second is inside the Member_Address record with MaxOccurs=* . The target address is placed inside the Locator record with MaxOccurs=*. The requirement is to map all source address to the one target address structure. The source Xml document looks like: The result Xml should be like this: Try to do this mapping with the Mapper and you will spent good amount of time and the result map would be tricky. If we use the Xslt code, the mapping will be simple and unambiguous, like this: Simple, elegant.

• Windows 2012 Server: Enable .NET 3.5

  I have a Windows 2012 Server which needs .NET 3.5 installed. For background info/solutions, please see this: http://sqlblog.com/blogs/sergio_govoni/archive/2013/07/13/how-to-install-netfx3-on-windows-server-2012-required-by-sql-server-2012.aspx I have tried this but it doesn't work for me. Here is what I am trying: Using a Windows 2012 ISO file, 'mount' on the 2012 Server as 'D' drive and then tried both GUI and Command prompt. In case of GUI, I specified the 'alternate source' path to the D drive's 'source/sxs folder but that failed without giving enough info. In case of the command prompt, here is what's happening: dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /source:d:\sources\sxs I get error: Installed but Parent feature not enabled. So I tried another approached: dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /all /source:d:\sources\sxs the above command, per http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2012/05/14/windows-8-and-net-framework-3-5.aspx is supposed to enable parent elements; but running this I get error like 'source not found'. Is there some error in my second command? What else I could do? This is Windows 2012 Server Standard edition. Thanks!

• Using commands with ApplicationBarMenuItem and ApplicationBarButton in Windows Phone 7

  Unfortunately, in the current version of the Windows Phone 7 Silverlight framework, it is not possible to attach any command on the ApplicationBarMenuItem and ApplicationBarButton controls. These two controls appear in the Application Bar, for example with the following markup: <phoneNavigation:PhoneApplicationPage.ApplicationBar> <shell:ApplicationBar x:Name="MainPageApplicationBar"> <shell:ApplicationBar.MenuItems> <shell:ApplicationBarMenuItem Text="Add City" /> <shell:ApplicationBarMenuItem Text="Add Country" /> </shell:ApplicationBar.MenuItems> <shell:ApplicationBar.Buttons> <shell:ApplicationBarIconButton IconUri="/Resources/appbar.feature.video.rest.png" /> <shell:ApplicationBarIconButton IconUri="/Resources/appbar.feature.settings.rest.png" /> <shell:ApplicationBarIconButton IconUri="/Resources/appbar.refresh.rest.png" /> </shell:ApplicationBar.Buttons> </shell:ApplicationBar> </phoneNavigation:PhoneApplicationPage.ApplicationBar> This code will create the following UI: Application bar, collapsed Application bar, expanded ApplicationBarItems are not, however, controls. A quick look in MSDN shows the following hierarchy for ApplicationBarMenuItem, for example: Unfortunately, this prevents all the mechanisms that are normally used to attach a Command (for example a RelayCommand) to a control. For example, the attached behavior present in the class ButtonBaseExtension (from the Silverlight 3 version of the MVVM Light toolkit) can only be attached to a DependencyObject. Similarly, Blend behaviors (such as EventToCommand from the toolkit’s Extras library) needs a FrameworkElement to work. Using code behind The alternative is to use code behind. As I said in my MIX10 talk, the MVVM police will not take your family away if you use code behind (this quote was actually suggested to me by Glenn Block); the code behind is there for a reason. In our case, invoking a command in the ViewModel requires the following code: In MainPage.xaml: <shell:ApplicationBarMenuItem Text="My Menu 1" Click="ApplicationBarMenuItemClick"/> In MainPage.xaml.cs private void ApplicationBarMenuItemClick( object sender, System.EventArgs e) { var vm = DataContext as MainViewModel; if (vm != null) { vm.MyCommand.Execute(null); } } Conclusion Resorting to code behind to bridge the gap between the View and the ViewModel is less elegant than using attached behaviors, either through an attached property or through a Blend behavior. It does, however, work fine. I don’t have any information if future changes in the Windows Phone 7 Application Bar API will make this easier.   I have a Cisco 877W which I'm using for my home ADSL connection (and as a refresher in Cisco IOS). I've got a working config in-place with my PPPoA connection coming online correctly, and VLANs and other settings configured as I want them, but I can't crack the NTP configuration. For NTP, I have the following defined ntp server 0.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 ntp server 1.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 ntp server 2.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 ntp server 3.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 This setup works fine when issued in Global Configuration Mode when the Dialer0 interface (ATM0.1) is up. The configuration fails at startup though: Translating "1.uk.pool.ntp.org"...domain server (208.67.222.222) (208.67.220.220) ntp server 1.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 ^ % Invalid input detected at "^" marker. This is repeated for the other servers defined. Obviously the DNS lookup for the server(s) fails because the DNS servers cannot be accessed because the external interface is not yet online. Is there a way to delay the NTP configuration until afte the Dialer0 interface is fully initialised? Can the NTP commands be triggered by the Line Protocol on the Dialer0 interface transitioning to the up state? Alternatively, can the NTP commands be delayed for 5 minutes after the router has finished initialising? Any advice, or pointers to useful documentation or examples gratefully received ...

• Newbie worried about CASE tool.

  Hi there. I'm looking for some guidance on CASE tools and whether my concerns are valid. Recently I was in a meeting between my employer and an external software company which have a CASE tool currently in beta. They demonstrated this tool to us, showing how you build a UML model in Enterprise Architect (or something like it) and then, through their tool, that UML model is transformed into a Visual Studio project, with C# files, stored procedures for SQL Server, code for the data layer, WCF stuff, logging code and allsorts. Now, admittedly, I don't see the point in this, as in I'm not convinced it will save that much time (plus it feels like overkill). The tool authors said that a trial of the tool at another company had saved a team there 5 weeks of development time (from 6 weeks down to about 1 week) using this tool. I find the accuracy of that estimate hard to believe. My main concern is whether using this tool is going slow down my productivity. For example - Say I have a UML model which I built a VS solution from. Now, I want to rename a class method to something else; will this mean having to update the UML model first and then rebuilding the code? Is this how case tools normally work? Something I will need to check with the authors is the structure of the generated VS solution. I like the Domain Driven Design way of project structure - Infrstructure, Services, Model, etc. I doubt very much this tool will do that. Also, I've been playing around with Entity Framework Code First and think it's a great way to build the data model. I have nice repositories, unit of work classes and other design patterns that work well with EF. I have data anootations and stuff like that working great. By not having EF (the CASE tool uses it's own data layer code) I'm concerned that this tool's data layer code might not be a nice to integrate in the UoW pattern, repositories, etc. This I will need to verify when I get a closer look at the generated code. What are other people's experiences with CASE tools? Am I being paranoid about nothing? Am I being unfair - are my negativities unfounded? EDIT: I like to use TDD/BDD for building my code, and using a CASE tool looks like it will make this difficult. Again, any feedback on this would be great. Cheers. Jas.

  After about 6 months of work, the new book I've coauthored with Grant Fritchey (Blog|Twitter), Phil Factor (Blog|Twitter) and Alex Kuznetsov (Blog|Twitter) is out. They're all smart folks I talk to online and this book is packed with good ideas backed by years of experience. The book contains a good deal of information about things you need to think of when doing any kind of multi person database development. Although it's meant for SQL Server, the principles can be applied to any database platform out there. In the book you will find information on: writing readable code, documenting code, source control and change management, deploying code between environments, unit testing, reusing code, searching and refactoring your code base. I've written chapter 5 about Database testing and chapter 11 about SQL Refactoring. In the database testing chapter (chapter 5) I cover why you should test your database, why it is a good idea to have a database access interface composed of stored procedures, views and user defined functions, what and how to test. I talk about how there are many testing methods like black and white box testing, unit and integration testing, error and stress testing and why and how you should do all those. Sometimes you have to convince management to go for testing in the development lifecycle so I give some pointers and tips how to do that. Testing databases is a bit different from testing object oriented code in a way that to have independent unit tests you need to rollback your code after each test. The chapter shows you ways to do this and also how to avoid it. At the end I show how to test various database objects and how to test access to them. In the SQL Refactoring chapter (chapter 11) I cover why refactor and where to even begin refactoring. I also who you a way to achieve a set based mindset to solve SQL problems which is crucial to good SQL set based programming and a few commonly seen problems to refactor. These problems include: using functions on columns in the where clause, SELECT * problems, long stored procedure with many input parameters, one subquery per condition in the select statement, cursors are good for anything problem, using too large data types everywhere and using your data in code for business logic anti-pattern.   I am running a multilingual website, each lang on a different domain name. I am trying to lead all purchase requests to the checkout progress, which has its own domain too. In order to keep Google Analytics tracking I've updated the Google Analytics code accordingly. I set the source domain to 'multiple top-level domains'. Everything is going fine so far unless in E-commerce Overview; the "Sources / Medium" is always showing as (direct) - or the name of the source domain. Since I am redirecting using PHP header(location:.. etc.) the Google _link method doesn't seem to be working properly - I want to focus on two questions: Should I create a new profile for the checkout domain in Google Analytics? (I am now using the profile ID of the source domain even though I move to the checkout domain, si that OK?) When I'm trying to pass the cookies of the source domain to the checkout domain, I notice that the Google cookies are copied to the new domain (the cookie path is .checkout-domain/) and they have the same values of the original cookies - But for some reason another set of cookies is created once I access a page with google analytics code in the checkout pages, with different values (same path). Feels like I'm doing something wrong here, so my question is - What am I doing wrong here? Does anyone have an idea how to pass the cookies to the checkout domain?

• A tiered approach to cloning linux partitons

  I'm looking at a strategy for cloning Linux (root) partitions without having to use a Live CD. Literature suggests rightly that the source and target partitions must be umounted to be able to get a clean clone. This assumes that you need to use a LiveCD. I was wondering if instead of requiring a LiveCD, if using a 3rd partition that would emulate the LiveCD functionality, if we can't achieve the same functionality. In other words, at a high level a system with 3 partitions (all bootable): Rescue Partition (LiveCD emulation) Running Partition (Source) Backup Partition (Destination) All 3 partitions are LVMS. When it's time to clone the source partition to the backup (destination) partition, we would boot to the rescue partition, unmount the other 2 partitions (is it required?), run disk check on the source, copy to the destination (dd or simple copy to avoid replicating the defragmentation from the source), run disk check on the destination partition, update Grub menu list to force boot from either partition, and reboot into that partition. My question, is it an approach that you'd recommend? MBR in all this? Any gotchas or extra checks required? Thanks, D. PS. On recommendation from members, posting here instead of stackoverflow.com.

• Fonts look worse after ATI proprietary driver install

  I've installed the (almost) current version of the Catalyst 12.4 proprietary driver (8.960). I used the version that is in precise's restricted repository with the following command: sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle After the install, I am encountering the following two problems: The splash screens for Kubuntu look crooked like they're the wrong resolution (not a big deal; who really cares). All the fonts are lighter, more pixelated (very annoying). This is what it looks like with the open source driver included in 12.04: http://imgur.com/1DxRj And this is what it looks like with the Catalyst driver: http://imgur.com/x6BpP I realize that it is hard to tell the difference with these two screen captures, but it really is quite different and annoying on my monitor. With the open source drivers the fonts look solid and clean the way they are supposed to. With the proprietary drivers the fonts looks fuzzier and more harsh. The only reason I need to use the proprietary driver is to play Minecraft. It does not run under the open source driver, unfortunately. What can I do to fix the fonts and get the proprietary driver to work as well as the open source driver?
