  • How to build a RESTful API?

    Hi friends, The issue is this: I have a web application that runs on a PHP server. I'd like to build a REST api for it. I did some research and I figured out that REST api uses HTTP methods (GET, POST...) for certain URI's with an authentication key (not necessarily) and the information is presented back as a HTTP response with the info as XML or JSON (I'd rather JSON). My question is: 1. How do I, as the developer of the app, build those URI's? Do I need to write a PHP code at that URI? 2. How do I build the JSON objects to return as a response? I hope I was clear enough. Thanks!

  • Client-side or server-side processing?

    So, I'm new to dynamic web design (my sites have been mostly static with some PHP), and I'm trying to learn the latest technologies in web development (which seems to be AJAX), and I was wondering, if you're transferring a lot of data, is it better to construct the page on the server and "push" it to the user, or is it better to "pull" the data needed and create the HTML around it on the clientside using JavaScript? More specifically, I'm using CodeIgniter as my PHP framework, and jQuery for JavaScript, and if I wanted to display a table of data to the user (dynamically), would it be better to format the HTML using CodeIgniter (create the tables, add CSS classes to elements, etc..), or would it be better to just serve the raw data using JSON and then build it into a table with jQuery? My intuition says to do it clientside, as it would save bandwidth and the page would probably load quicker with the new JavaScript optimizations all these browsers have now, however, then the site would break for someone not using JavaScript...     hi all, Ok so it's not exactly a programing question but does anyone know or have experience with looking for a system for managing users on a website we are building? what is the shortlist of good feature rich secure solutions. we need Php and mysql integration and payment support for main credit cards.   • Using thrift to mix development languages

    I am currently developing an application which will require multiple different development languages. I want to use PHP as the final piece of the puzzle - the physical web page construction. This PHP web app will need to contact multiple web services which could be coded in anything from Java to Erlang to Python. Each of these web services will be implemented with an API. My plan is to use Thrift to allow this mix to work. Is this the correct approach or am I mixing up what the whole point of Thrift is?

  • Database caching on a shared host

    Anyone have any ideas how to increase MySQL performance on a shared host? My question has less to do with overall database performance and more to do with simply retrieving user-submitted data. Currently my database will create caches at timed intervals, and then the PHP will selectively access the static files it needs. This has given me a noticeable performance boost, but I am worried about a time in which I have so much data that having to read in big files in PHP will actually be slower. I am just looking for ideas for shared hosting solutions; I am not going to get my own server anytime soon. Thanks!

    I am Netbeans user for PHP. I have installed Netbeans IDE 6.8. Everything is working well. There is an option in SOURCE -- FORMAT. This action formats the code properly. It is quite handy. Unfortunately, this functionality is not working for me. Whenever some php code comes in between, it additionally adding some empty rows in between and making it more untidy. Can you please help to set up the same functionality. Restore the settings to default.

  • WordPress: don't show 404 when no posts exist

    Currently there is a bug in WordPress if you have a Posts Page set under: Settings-Reading-A Static Page-Posts Page If there are posts, than the page (e.g. with a slug called news) displays the post, and uses index.php from the theme. But, with this configuration, if there are no posts, then it calls the theme's 404 page. This is definitely a bug, and has been submitted (Ticket #10822). It should be letting index.php show whatever it wants upon !have_posts(), but right now the page doesn't seem to be called at all. My question is: is there a workaround for this bug without modifying core wp files? I'd be open to a plugin, theme changes, a custom page template, htaccess changes, etc.

  • Web App fails when moved to production environment. Which server permissions do I need?

    I have developed a small web app. This app allows users to upload images. It also produces text files with the names of those images (the names are stored and retrieved to/from an MySQL Database.) I have developed this app using MAMP. To create the uploaded image files I use the PHP function imagejpeg('my/path/name.jpg') and to delete the files I use the PHP function unlink('folder1/folder2/name.jpg') to write to the text document I am using the function fopen('folder1/folder2/name.txt', 'w') all three of these functions produce errors related to permissions - now the site has been moved to a live hosting environment. Why is this? and what permissions do I need to set the folder's folder1 and folder2 to? I know that permission 777 is generally bad because it opens up your server to the public. However what I have found is that the functions fail to work unless I use 777 on the folders. Can anyone shed any light on my dilemma?

    To start off, let me clear the air by saying we are aware of the dis/advantages to using short tag syntax in PHP. That is not what this question is about. Is there a way to "include" a file containing short tag code, into a variable, and have PHP actually parse the code? include/require obviously do not provide the data in a workable form, and output buffering does not parse the short tag code because it happens at runtime. Using eval() is simply not an option. Suggestions?

  • Is there a recommended approach to handle saving data in response to within-site navigation without

    Hello all, Preamble to scope my question: I have a web app (or site, this is an internal LAN site) that uses jQuery and AJAX extensively to dynamically load the content section of the UI in the browser. A user navigates the app using a navigation menu. Clicking an item in the navigation menu makes an AJAX call to php, and php then returns the content that is used to populate the central content section. One of the pages served back by php has a table form, set up like a spreadsheet, that the user enters values into. This table is always kept in sync with data in the database. So, when the table is created, is it populated with the relevant database data. Then when the user makes a change in a "cell", that change immediately is written back to the database so the table and database are always in sync. This approach was take to reassure users that the data they entered has been saved (long story...), and to alleviate them from having to click a save button of some kind. So, this always in sync idea is great, except that a user can enter a value in a cell, not take focus out of the cell, and then take any number of actions that would cause that last value to be lost: e.g. navigate to another section of the site via the navigation menu, log out of the app, close the browser, etc. End of preamble, on to the issue: I initially thought that wasn't a problem, because I would just track what data was "dirty" or not saved, and then in the onunload event I would do a final write to the database. Herein lies the rub: because of my clever (or not so clever, not sure) use of AJAX and dynamically loading the content section, the user never actually leaves the original url, or page, when the above actions are taken, with the exception of closing the browser. Therefore, the onunload event does not fire, and I am back to losing the last data again. My question, is there a recommended way to handle figuring out if a person is navigating away from a "section" of your app when content is dynamically loaded this way? I can come up with a solution I think, that involves globals and tracking the currently viewed page, but I thought I would check if there might be a more elegant solution out there, or a change I could make in my design, that would make this work.     I have a database of real estate listings and need to return a list of neighborhoods. Right now I am using mysql DISTINCT which returns all of the distinct values. My probelm is that there is a lot of neighborhoods that have similar names: example: Park View Sub 1 Park View Park View Sub 2 Park View Sub 3 Great Lake Sub 1 Great Lake Sub 2 Great Lake Great Lake Sub 3 I am looking for an easy php or mysql solution that would recognize that "Park View" and "Great Lake" already exists and ONLY return "Park View" and "Great Lake". My initial thought is to some how get the sort order by length so that the short values are at the top and then loop through using strstr. This sound like a large task I am wondering if there is a function either in mysql or php that would easily do this.

  • CodeIgniter: json_decode array issues

    On my client side I'm sending an ajax request with jQuery in the following matter: $.post(script.php, { "var1":"something", "var2":"[1,2,3]" }, function(data) { }, "json"); On the server side, in the CodeIgniter's controller I'm receiving the values like so: $var1 = trim($this->input->post('var1')); $var2 = trim($this->input->post('var2')); My question is how do I convert the string in $var2 into a PHP array. I tried using json_decode($var2, true) but it returns a null since "[1,2,3]" is not a legal JSON string by itself. Also, if you believe there is a better way for me to read the values on the server-side please show me how. Thank you.

    hello guys, just simple question, recently i have setup a web server to build project using zend framework, after setup and see those welcome page saying that you are creating websites powered by zendframework, then i try issuing command, $ zf create controller alert i get the message that saying that i've successfully create controller, view and so on, but when i try to navigate to the page by URL, ex: www.mywebapp.com/alert the page is broken, i've check those tuts but none of them showing this case. can some one define which step i've skip? update: (25/5/2010) so i've found that there is no problem, is just that i've not configured properly my route to my web apps, so i have to type URL like this: www.mywebapp.com/index.php/alert how am I going to change this? i mean i want to explode "index.php" out of URL.

  • How to verify a digital signature with openssl

    I'm using a thirdparty credit card processing service (Paybox) that, after a successful transaction, redirects back to the website with a signature in the URL as a security measure to prevent people from manipulating data. It's supposed to prove that the request originated from this service. So my success URL looks something like this: /success.php?signature=[HUGE HASH] I have no idea where to start with verifying this signature. This service does provide a public key, and I assume I need to create a private key, but I don't know much beyond that. I'm pretty good with linux, and I know I'll have to run some openssl commands. I'm writing the verification script in PHP, which also has native openssl() functions. If anyone could please push me in the right direction with some pseudo code, or even functional code, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

On click, the button submits data to a php file and then changes text and blurs according to the response from php file. The blur function and change text function in col5 is working well. But the change text function in button got really buggy. The button text should change accordingly. the text of button "Activate" should change to "Inactivate" and the text of button "Inactivate" should change to "Activate" on click / successful submission.. This is not working..     Hello I have robots.txt that looks like this: User-agent: * Disallow: /system/ Disallow: /admin/ Disallow: /index.php The obvious goal has been to prevent all the ugly URLs from being indexed, as they all begin with "/index.php". But for some reason all URLs like /my-beautiful-sef-url-123 are listed under Crawl errors in Google Webmaster Tools with "URL restricted by robots.txt". (When I test such URL it yields Allowed for both Googlebot and Googlebot-Mobile.) Can anyone help please?
