  I have seen that you can write your application in Qt, and it can be run in different operating systems. And - correct me if I'm wrong - you don't need to have Qt already installed in all of these platforms. How exactly this approach works? Does Qt compiles to the desired platform, does it bundle some "dlls" (libs), how does it do it? Is different from programming a Java application for the sake of cross-platform? If you use Python to write a Qt application with Python bindings, does the final user needs to have Python installed?

• Is a Service Bus a good option to communicate with multiple external servers?

  We are developing an application that communicates, via web services or TCP/IP sockets, with multiple servers (up to 50 different external companies). Basically, the exchanged messages are the same (XML), but depending on the inputs of our application we should call 1 or more external servers. The benefits we would expect of introducing a Service Bus in the architecture would be: 1- Remove the need to manage all point-to-point configurations (all the 50 endpoints); 2- Simplify the communication layer of our application by having only one server to talk to; Is a Service Bus a good architectural option for this scenario? What is the best (simplest) Service Bus for this kind of communication? I read a few MSDN articles on Azure Service Bus Relay, but it didn’t seem to fit our needs. Am I wrong? Thanks for your help.

• WPF Moving Element problem

  Hello, I am probably over-doing a very simple problem, but this is what I have a the moment: I have several buttons and a listbox of items in which the user can select and interact with. My application also moves those elements in accordance to the application width/height, such as follows: listBox1.Margin = new Thickness(this.ActualWidth * 0.84, this.ActualHeight * 0.3, 0, 0); I am able to select the items within the listbox and click on buttons appropriately while in windowed mode, but as I begin to stretch the application larger, I try to click on the items, and I cannot do so.. is this because I also need to update their hit-detection rectangles as well? Or perhaps am I moving the items incorrectly? I am at a loss.. any information would be very helpful at this point...thanks!

• Virtualization of Legacy API and co-existence with more modern API?

  I don't mean for this question to be a flame bait but I'll be using Microsoft and their win32 API as a example of a legacy API. Now what I am wondering here is Microsoft is spending a lots of their money and energy in maintaining their legacy API, including all of the "glitches/bugs/workaround" that are needed to keep the API functioning the same. Now I'm aware that in Windows 7 they are providing a way for the customer to run their application in a "Windows XP" VM which would be one such way for them to start cleaning up their win32 API because they could then push all of the application into the "Windows XP" VM. So now what I am wondering is, is it possible to virtualization a legacy API in such way that an customer/program can still access and use it, yet at the same time be able to take advantage of the newer version/API? Because as far as I understand it, if the application is ran in the "Windows XP" VM, it won't be able to access any of the newer API/feature of Windows 7.

• I'm trying to implement 2 factor authentication on the cheap. How would I do that?

  Ok so I need 2 of the 3. Something the user knows. Something the user has. Something the user is. I have a system that is exposed to the internet and we need clients to connect in a secure manner to satisfy our security standards. I'm thinking when a user registers to use our system we send them an application that they install on their home system. The application generates a key based on a timed randomness algorithm. Our application server has the same algorithm so when the user submits their credentials with the key we know that they are a legitimate user. Is this a valid method of 2 factor authentication? What is another way of doing this? Are there any pitfalls that I should be aware of? Thanks for your help!

  I am creating a computer vision application that detect objects via a web camera. I am currently focusing on the performance of the application My problem is in a part of the application that generates the XML cascade file using Haartraining file. This is very slow and takes about 6days . To get around this problem I decided to use multiprocessing, to minimize the total time to generate Haartraining XML file. I found two solutions: opencl and (openMp and openMPI ) . Now I'm confused about which one to use. I read that opencl is to use multiple cpu and GPU but on the same machine. Is that so? On the other hand OpenMP is for multi-processing and using openmpi we can use multiple CPUs over the network. But OpenMP has no GPU support. Can you please suggest the pros and cons of using either of the libraries.

• Can a MAC address be used as a reliable part of a rights management (DRM) scheme?

  We're currently writing some software that we want to protect. We thought that registering a user's MAC address in a database upon activation of the software seemed viable; we can profile and grab that with a Java applet, (is there a better way?) so getting it isn't too much of a problem. However, we want their computer to only run the application, and download application files/updates from the server when their MAC address has been verified with their one on-file. We understand that this means a lockdown to one computer, but special changes can be made on request. What would be the best way to verify their MAC address, to see if it exists in the database, and then serve them the files to run the application? (And to simply run it on subsequent requests, to prevent re-downloading.)

• Click-Once deployment is leaving multiple versions (yes, more than 2)

  I've got a click once application that is leaving all old versions on my disk. It's an internal corporate application that gets frequent updates, so this is a disaster for rapidly inflating our backup size. According to the docs and other SO questions, it is supposed to only leave the current and previous versions on disk. However, each time I deploy the project and upgrade a client, I get another copy of all exe/dll/data files. I'm making no changes whatsoever to the application, just pushing deploy again in Visual Studio. Any ideas? Updates: The problem seems to happen on both Windows 7 and XP. 64 bit windows and 32. I've done a diff of the folders where the version is installed and the following files are different: MyApp.exe.manifest MyApp.exe.cdf-ms MyDll1.cdf-ms MyDll2.cdf-ms No actual executable files are different, nor the MyApp.manifest, MyDll1.manifest, etc.

In a VS Setup project, is it possible to dynamically change the application folder before a project is installed, or even to add any code behind the set-up project at all?   Hi, I have two tables: 1) Application(int appid, int statusid, String appname, String appcity with getter and Setter methods) 2) App_Status(int statusid,String statusDescription with setter and getter methods) I want to map Application table with App_Status so that I don't have to query separately App_Status table in order to get the statusDescription. One thing I have to careful is that no matter what (Insert,update or delete) to the Application table the App_Status table should be unaffected means its a read only table which is maintained by the DBA internally and used only for lookup table. I am using JPA annotations so please suggest how to handle this.

• NoSQL for concurrent reads/writes

  After getting some performance issues for an application using a MySQL database, I'm thinking of using NoSQL solutions. My architecture is as follows: One application receives messages from the network at a high throughput (i.e. 50000 messages/sec). Each message is stored in the DB, so it's important for the write rate to be as fast as the arrival rate. Then, I also have some PHP pages that accesses the DB to get the data stored by the other application. It's important for me that the retrieved data is as relevant as possible (i.e. not old data, let's say not more than 5 seconds old). Also, the data is not critical, so I don't need any security mechanism to avoid losing the data. I see there are a lot of NoSQL solutions, but I don't know if they are all relevant. Could you please provide me some directions. Thanks

  I follow the direction in here How to configure SQL Server to manage ASP.NET sessions to create ASPState db. I have 2 web application in IIS 7. In IIS web application setting, i go to "Session State" and set session state as "SQL Server" and provide connection string. In each web application web.config, i add <sessionState mode="SQLServer" allowCustomSqlDatabase="false" sqlConnectionString="data source=server;user id=user;password=password" cookieless="false" timeout="7200" /> I create a session , Session["Data"] = "test" in Web App A and go to Web App B in the same browser to print it Response.Write(Session["Data"]); It shows NOTHING. I can see there are data in table : ASPStateTempApplications and ASPStateTempSessions under ASPState Database. Also, i dont see any error in event log. Can anyone think anything i may do wrong? • ASP.NET web site running in IIS and hosting WCF service fails to get connections on the TCP server

  I am using the combination of Silverlight client application along with ASP.NET web site running in IIS and hosting WCF service. This WCF service uses the library that starts a TCP server and and initiates requests to the connected TCP clients when the silverlight client application makes the WCF async requests. When I use this library in a local WPF application, the TCP server is able to receive client connection requests and I can get info from these clients. But when I use the same library from the implementation of the WCF service inside the ASP .NET web site project (+ Silverlight client), the server strangely does not receive any connection requests i.e. when I create TcpListener object and issue a start, nothing happens (nor an exception is generated). My setup is I am using the Ethernet for the Internet and Wi-Fi for the TCP clients. Is the WCF service getting confused because of this? Is there any special WCF settings I should put in for TcpListener.Start to work?

  Hi, I'm using NHibernate with my ASP.Net MVC application. I'm writing some extensions (plugins) for my application. And I'm loading those plugin dynamically (from different assemblies). In my base application I have many entities and mappings defined (User, Group, etc...) I need to create new entities in my extensions, so i.e. I'm creating News module, so I need to create News mapping. In database News table has a foreign key to User table. Is there any way I can modify my User mapping, so it will have: HasMany(x => x.Courses) .KeyColumn("GroupId") .Inverse(); Or the only way to do it is to change code in my User class and recompile project ? I'm not NHibernate advanced user, so any help will be appreciated. TIA.

  i developed a application with in app purchases..when user buys the subscription it gets stored on my server..after testing it few times i deleted the data from server to test it again but when i buy it the sandbox environment says u you already purchased this.TAP OK to download it again for free also i have used this test account on my previous application?? does it means i will have to create a new test account for this application?? also by mistake i used this account on apple store..i read somewhere that doing this will make your test account invalid...is it true?? should i create a new account for it??

• How to trigger code on two different servers in a WAS cluster?

  I have an administrative page in a web application that resets the cache, but it only resets the cache on the current JVM. The web application is deployed as a cluster to two WAS servers. Any way that I can elegantly have the "clear cache" button on each server trigger the method on both JVMs? Edit: The original developer just wrote a singleton holding a HashMap to be the cache in question. Lightweight and (previously) worked just fine for the requirements. It caches content pulled from six or seven web services for specified amounts of time. Edit: The entire application in question is three pages, so the elegant solution might well be the lightest solution.

  I'm developing a PHP application to retrieve the list of contacts from a GMail account. I'm looking for a solution which would enable the user of my application to provide the login and password to their Gmail account in my application (as opposed to getting redirected to Google) and then automatically do the retrieval. The retrieval process can be run in PHP or JavaScript (which would then feed the list of contacts back to PHP using Ajax). Is it possible to do that? Which JavaScript API should I use for that? I see several use cases for this scenario like an enterprise application syncing all users from the main LDAP of the Org but keeping it's own application related schemas and objects in its server. When I run that binary in 64 bit intel machine , the following error is displayed "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.".. In the event log it is mentioned that "Activation context generation failed for . Dependent Assembly icrosoft.VC80.DebugCRT,processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50608.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis. What is this issue and how to resolve this problem ?and architecture of the target system is amd64. However, when I put the listItemRendererFunction into a class and change to the following: itemRendererFunction="controller.listItemRendererFunction" in the List component. If I run the application, I get the " Error #1009". Please advice how to fix it.
