• java.rmi.UnmarshalException: unable to pull client classes by server

  Hi, I have an RMI client/server set-up on two machines that works fine in a simple situation when the server doesn't require a client-side defned class. However, when I need to use a class defined on the client side I am unable to have the server unmarshall those classes. I suspect this is an issue with my java.rmi.server.codebase property that I pass in as argument to the client app. I followed Sun's RMI Tutorial trail and I think I have followed the steps exactly except that I don't specify a classpath argument when executing client and server because they execute in the directory right above the root package directory (however I tried that too with no effect). Note 3: I tried using myhostname:2002 since myhostname is assigned to the router and I have proper port-mapping set-up, this address should resolve to naples and not venice 2 try #2: naples$ java -Djava.rmi.server.codebase=file:/Users/andrews/Development/Java/workspace/epsilon/bin/ -Djava.security.policy=client.policy test.myClient myhostname Note 1: the code base url format is correct, I created a small program to convert current file directory path into a url and used that. using file:///Users... has same effect. Other notes: 1 my server and client policy files correctly specify the path, as I've tested this setup with good and bad paths, and getting a security exception for bad path 2 this setup works if I don't use client-side defined objects, the client connects correctly to the server and the server executes. 3 when I place the client-side class on the server in the server's classpath, all executes fine. All help is appreciated.

  I'm trying to run hibernate tools in an ant build to generate ddl from my JPA annotations. Ant dies on the taskdef tag. I've tried with ant 1.7, 1.6.5, and 1.6 to no avail. I've tried both in eclipse and outside. I've tried including all the hbn jars in the hibernate-tools path and not. • Error in loading component property (Swing GUI Forms)

  For no apparent reason all my Swing GUI forms using components linked to org.jdesktop.beansbinding.Converter started generating errors when trying to open the Design View: Error Error in loading component property: [JPanel]-filterTextField-converter. Cannot load property type class org.jdesktop.beansbinding.Converter. The property cannot be loaded. Errors occurred in loading... I'm currently using Netbeans 6.8. I opened my project in Netbeans 6.7.1 and all was fine but after a while the same thing happened. Looking at the .form and .java files and comparing it to previous backups, everything looks fine. Even my Netbeans tutorial project no longer works. What can cause this. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. • Why C# doesn't implement indexed properties ?

  I know, I know... Eric Lippert's answer to this kind of question is usually something like "because it wasn't worth the cost of designing, implementing, testing and documenting it". But still, I'd like a better explanation... I was reading this blog post about new C# 4 features, and in the section about COM Interop, the following part caught my attention : By the way, this code uses one more new feature: indexed properties (take a closer look at those square brackets after Range.) But this feature is available only for COM interop; you cannot create your own indexed properties in C# 4.0. OK, but why ? I already knew and regretted that it wasn't possible to create indexed properties in C#, but this sentence made me think again about it. I can see several good reasons to implement it : the CLR supports it (for instance, PropertyInfo.GetValue has an index parameter), so it's a pity we can't take advantage of it in C# it is supported for COM interop, as shown in the article (using dynamic dispatch) it is implemented in VB.NET it is already possible to create indexers, i.e. to apply an index to the object itself, so it would probably be no big deal to extend the idea to properties, keeping the same syntax and just replacing this with a property name It would allow to write that kind of things : public class Foo { private string[] _values = new string[3]; public string Values[int index] { get { return _values[index]; } set { _values[index] = value; } } } Currently the only workaround that I know is to create an inner class (ValuesCollection for instance) that implements an indexer, and change the Values property so that it returns an instance of that inner class. • Can't run my servlet from tomcat server even though the classes are in package

The servet class is in the appropriate folder (i.e under the package name). I also added the jar files needed in my servlet into lib folder. the web.xml file maps the url and defines the servlet. • How Do I Bind a "selected Item" in a Listbox to a ItemsControl in WPF?

  LowDown: I am trying to create a Document Viewer in WPF. It will allow the user to preview selected documents and if they want, compare the documents in WPF. So they can view them side by side. The layout is this: Left side is a full list box. On the right side is a Collection or an Items control. Inside the items control will be a collection of the "selected documents" in the list box. So A user can select multiple items in the list box and for each new item they select, they can add the item to the collection on the right. I want the collection to look like a image gallery that shows up in Google/Bing Image searches. Make sense? The problem I am having is I can't get the WPFPreviewer to bind correctly to the selected item in the list box under the itemscontrol. Side Note: The WPFPreviewer is something Micorosft puts out that allows us to preview documents. Other previewers can be built for all types of documents, but im going basic here until I get this working right. • How to implement an offline reader writer lock

  Some context for the question All objects in this question are persistent. All requests will be from a Silverlight client talking to an app server via a binary protocol (Hessian) and not WCF. Each user will have a session key (not an ASP.NET session) which will be a string, integer, or GUID (undecided so far). Some objects might take a long time to edit (30 or more minutes) so we have decided to use pessimistic offline locking. Pessimistic because having to reconcile conflicts would be far too annoying for users, offline because the client is not permanently connected to the server. Rather than storing session/object locking information in the object itself I have decided that any aggregate root that may have its instances locked should implement an interface ILockable public interface ILockable { Guid LockID { get; } } This LockID will be the identity of a "Lock" object which holds the information of which session is locking it. Now, if this were simple pessimistic locking I'd be able to achieve this very simply (using an incrementing version number on Lock to identify update conflicts), but what I actually need is ReaderWriter pessimistic offline locking. The reason is that some parts of the application will perform actions that read these complex structures. These include things like Reading a single structure to clone it. Reading multiple structures in order to create a binary file to "publish" the data to an external source. Read locks will be held for a very short period of time, typically less than a second, although in some circumstances they could be held for about 5 seconds at a guess. Write locks will mostly be held for a long time as they are mostly held by humans. There is a high probability of two users trying to edit the same aggregate at the same time, and a high probability of many users needing to temporarily read-lock at the same time too. I'm looking for suggestions as to how I might implement this. One additional point to make is that if I want to place a write lock and there are some read locks, I would like to "queue" the write lock so that no new read locks are placed. If the read locks are removed withing X seconds then the write lock is obtained, if not then the write lock backs off; no new read-locks would be placed while a write lock is queued. So far I have this idea The Lock object will have a version number (int) so I can detect multi-update conflicts, reload, try again. It will have a string[] for read locks A string to hold the session ID that has a write lock A string to hold the queued write lock Possibly a recursion counter to allow the same session to lock multiple times (for both read and write locks), but not sure about this yet. Rules: Can't place a read lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. Can't place a write lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. If there are no locks at all then a write lock may be placed. If there are read locks then a write lock will be queued instead of a full write lock placed. (If after X time the read locks are not gone the lock backs off, otherwise it is upgraded). Can't queue a write lock for a session that has a read lock. Can anyone see any problems? Suggest alternatives? Anything? I'd appreciate feedback before deciding on what approach to take.

• SQL server deadlock between INSERT and SELECT statement

  Hi! I've got a problem with multiple deadlocks on SQL server 2005. This one is between an INSERT and a SELECT statement. There are two tables. Table 1 and Table2. Table2 has Table1's PK (table1_id) as foreign key. Index on table1_id is clustered. The INSERT inserts a single row into table2 at a time. The SELCET joins the 2 tables. (it's a long query which might take up to 12 secs to run) According to my understanding (and experiments) the INSERT should acquire an IS lock on table1 to check referential integrity (which should not cause a deadlock).   I've read as many search results I could find on this dreaded problem, unfortunatelly, each one seems to focus on a specific function call. My problem is that I get the same error from multiple functions, which I am guessing are being called back from functions that I use. To make matters worse, the actual code is within a custom private framework which is being imported in another project, and as such, debugging isn't as simple? • How do I explain this to potential employers?

  Backstory: TL;DR: I've gained a lot of experience working for 5 years at one startup company, but it eventually failed. The company is gone and the owner MIA. When I left sixth-form college I didn't want to start a degree straight away, so when I met this guy who knew a guy who was setting up a publishing company and needed a 'Techie' I thought why not. It was a very small operation, he sent mailings to schools, waited for orders to start arriving, then ordered a short run of the textbooks to be printed, stuck them in an envelope posted them out. I was initially going to help him set up a computerized system for recording orders and payments, printing labels, really basic stuff and I threw it together in Access in a couple of weeks. He also wanted to start taking orders online, so I set up a website and a paypal business account. While I was doing this, I was also helping to do the day-to-day running of things, taking phone orders, posting products, banking cheques, ordering textbooks, designing mailings, filing end of year accounts, hiring extra staff, putting stamps on envelopes. I learned so much about things I didn't even know I needed to learn about. Things were pretty good, when I started we sold about £10,000 worth of textbooks and by my 4th year there we sold £250,000 worth of text books. Things were looking good, but we had a problem. Our best selling product had peaked and sales started to fall sharply, we introduced add on products through the website to boost sales which helped for a while, but we had simply saturated the market. Our plan was to enter the US with our star product and follow the same, slightly modified, plan as before. We setup a 1-866 number and had the calls forwarded to our UK offices. We contracted a fulfillment company, shipped over a few thousand textbooks, had a mailing printed and mailed, then sat by the phones and waited. Needless to say, it didn't work. We tried a few other things, at home and in the US, but nothing helped. We expanded in the good times, moving into bigger offices, taking on staff to do administrative and dispatch work, but now cashflow was becoming a problem and things got tougher. We did the only thing we could and scaled things right back, the offices went, the admin staff went, I stopped taking a wage and started working from home. Nothing helped. The business was wound up about about 2 years ago. In the end it turned out that the owner had built up considerable debt at the start of business and had not paid them off during good years, which left him in a difficult position when cashflow had started to dry up. I haven't been able to contact the owner since I found out. It took me a while to get back on my feet after that, but I'm now at University and doing a Computer Science degree. How do I show the experience I have without having to get into all the gory details of what happened?

  I thought I'd put together a quick script to consolidate the CSS rules I have distributed across multiple CSS files, then I can minify it. I'm new to Python but figured this would be a good exercise to try a new language. My main loop isn't parsing the CSS as I thought it would. I populate a list with selectors parsed from the CSS files to return the CSS rules in order. • Windows NT Service shutdown issues

  I have developed middleware that provides RPC functionality to multiple client applications on multiple platforms within our organization. The middleware is written in C# and runs as a Windows NT Service. It handles things like file access to network shares, database access, etc. The middleware is hosted on two high end systems running Windows Server 2008 R2. When one of our server administrators goes to reboot the machine, primarily to do Windows Updates, there are serious problems with how the system behaves in regards to my NT Service. My service is designed to immediately stop listening for new connections, immediately start refusing new requests on existing connections, and otherwise shut down as rapidly as possible in the case of an OnStop or OnShutdown request from the SCM. Still, to maintain system integrity, operations that are currently in progress are allowed to continue for a reasonable time. Usually the server shuts down inside of 30 seconds (when the service is manually stopped for example). However, when the system is instructed to restart, my service immediately loses access to network drives and UNC paths, causing data integrity problems for any open files and partial writes to those locations. My service does list Workstation (and thus SMB Redirector) as a dependency, so I would think that my service would need to be stopped prior to Workstation/Redirector being stopped if Windows were honoring those dependencies. Basically, my application is forced to crash and burn, failing remote procedure calls and eventually being forced to terminate by the operating system after a timeout period has elapsed (seems to be on the order of 20-30 seconds). Unlike a Windows application, my Windows NT Service doesn't seem to have any power to stop a system shutdown in progress, delay the system shutdown, or even just the opportunity to save out any pending network share disk writes before being forcibly disconnected and shutdown. How is an NT Service developer supposed to have any kind of application integrity in this environment? Why is it that Forms Applications get all of the opportunity to finish their business prior to shutdown, while services seem to get no such benefits? I have tried: Calling SetProcessShutdownParameters via p/invoke to try to notify my application of the shutdown sooner to avoid Redirector shutting down before I do. Calling ServiceBase.RequestAdditionalTime with a value less than or equal to the two minute limit. Tweaking the WaitToKillServiceTimeout Everything I can think of to make my service shutdown faster. But in the end, I still get ~30 seconds of problematic time in which my service doesn't even seem to have been notified of an OnShutdown event yet, but requests are failing due to redirector no longer servicing my network share requests. How is this issue meant to be resolved? What can I do to delay or stop the shutdown, or at least be allowed to shut down my active tasks without Redirector services disappearing out from under me? I can understand what Microsoft is trying to do to prevent services from dragging their feet and showing shutdowns, but that seems like a great goal for Windows client operating systems, not for servers. I don't want my servers to shutdown fast, I want operational integrity and graceful shutdowns. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. PS in regards to writing my own middleware, this is for a telephony application with sub-second "soft-realtime" response time requirements. It does make sense, and it's not a point I'm looking to debate. :)

• How to Bind a selected Item in a Listbox to a ItemsControl and ItemTemplate in WPF and C#

  All, LowDown: I am trying to create a Document Viewer in WPF. The layout is this: Left side is a full list box. On the right side is a Collection or an Items control. Inside the items control will be a collection of the "selected documents" in the list box. So A user can select multiple items in the list box and for each new item they select, they can add the item to the collection on the right. I want the collection to look like a image gallery that shows up in Google/Bing Image searches. Make sense? The problem I am having is I can't get the WPFPreviewer to bind correctly to the selected item in the list box under the itemscontrol. Side Note: The WPFPreviewer is something Micorosft puts out that allows us to preview documents. Other previewers can be built for all types of documents, but im going basic here until I get this working right.   Hi, I'm having a fundamental issue with use of drawRect: Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The application needs to draw a variety of .png images at different times, sometimes with animation, sometimes without. A design goal that I was hoping to adhere to is to have the code inside drawRect: very simple and "dumb" - i.e. just do drawing and no other application logic. To draw the image I am using the drawAtPoint: method of UIImage. Since this method does not take a CGContext as a parameter, it can only be called within the drawRect: method. So I have: - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { [firstImage drawAtPoint:CGPointMake(firstOffsetX, firstOffsetY)]; } All fine and dandy for one image. To draw multiple images (over time) the approach I have taken is to maintain an array of dictionaries with each dictionary containing an image, the point location to draw at and a flag to enable/suppress drawing for that image. I add dictionaries to the array over time and trigger drawing via the setNeedsDisplay: method of UIView. Use of an array of dictionaries allows me to completely reconstruct the entire display at any time. drawRect: now becomes: - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { for (NSMutableDictionary *imageDict in [self imageDisplayList]) { if ([[imageDict objectForKey:@"needsDisplay"] boolValue]) { [[imageDict objectForKey:@"image"] drawAtPoint:[[imageDict objectForKey:@"location"] CGPointValue]]; [imageDict setValue:[NSNumber numberWithBool:NO] forKey:@"needsDisplay"]; } } } Still OK. The point that we are at now is that it all starts to look very ugly. More specifically: drawRect: starts to bloat quickly and contain code that is not "just drawing" code the UIView needs implicit awareness of the application state the overall process of drawing is now spread across three methods at a minimum And on to the point of this post: how can I do this better? What would the experts out there recommend in terms of overall structure? How can I keep application state information out of the view? Am I looking at this problem from the wrong direction. Is there some completely different approach that I should consider?

• ActiveRecord Logic Challenge - Smart Ways to Use AR Timestamp

  My question is somewhat specific to my app's issue, but the answer should be instructive in terms of use cases for association logic and the record timestamp. I have an NBA pick 'em game where I want to award badges for picking x number of games in a row correctly -- 10, 20, 30. Here are the models, attributes, and associations in-play: User id Pick id result # (values can be 'W', 'L', 'T', or nil. nil means hasn't resolved yet.) resolved # (values can be true, false, or nil.) game_time created_at *Note: There are cases where a pick's result field and resolved field will always be nil. Perhaps the game was cancelled. Badge id Award id user_id badge_id created_at User has many awards. User has many picks. Pick belongs to user. Badge has many awards. Award belongs to user. Award belongs to badge. One of the important rules here to capture in the code is that while a user can be awarded multiple streak badges (e.g., a user can win multiple 10-streak badges), the user CAN'T be awarded another badge for consecutive winning picks that were previously granted an award badge. One way to think of this is that all the dates of the winning picks must come after the date that the streak badge was awarded. For example, let's pretend that a user made 13 winning picks from May 5 to May 8, with the 10th winning pick occurring on May 7, and the last 3 on May 8. The user would be awarded a 10-streak badge on May 7. Now if the user makes another winning pick on May 9, the code must recognize that the user only has a streak of 4 winning picks, not 14, because the user already received an award for the first 10. Now let's assume that the user makes 6 more winning picks. In this case, the code must recognize that all winning picks since May 5 are eligible for a 20-streak badge award, and make the award. Another important rule is that when looking at a winning streak, we don't care about the game time, but rather when the pick was made (created_at). For example, let's say that Team A plays Team B on Sat. And Team C plays Team D on Sun. If the user picks Team C to beat Team D on Thurs, and Team A to beat Team C on Fri, and Team A wins on Sat, but Team C loses on Sun, then the user has a losing streak of 1. So when must the streak-check kick-in? As soon as a pick is a win. If it's a loss or tie, no point in checking. One more note: if the pick is not resolved (false) and the result is nil, that means the game was postponed and must be factored out. With all that said, what is the most efficient, effective and lean way to determine whether a user has a 10-, 20- or 30-win streak?

• Help to restructure my Doc/View more correctly

  Edited by OP. My program is in need of a lot of cleanup and restructuring. In another post I asked about leaving the MFC DocView framework and going to the WinProc & Message Loop way (what is that called for short?). Well at present I am thinking that I should clean up what I have in Doc View and perhaps later convert to non-MFC it that even makes sense. My Document class currently has almost nothing useful in it. I think a place to start is the InitInstance() function (posted below). I only have one doc and one view. I feel like I am going about it backwards with GetNextDoc() and GetNextView(). I'm tired of feeling embarrassed about my code. I either need correction or reassurance, or both. :) Also, all the miscellaneous items are in no particular order. • Why am I getting 'Argument count mismatch' error here?

  I have a Document class, Intro class and Nav class. The Intro class runs first, then sends a custom dispatch event to run the Nav class, but I'm getting this error: removed Intro ArgumentError: Error #1063: Argument count mismatch on com.secrettowriting.StanPlayer.ui::Navigation/addNav(). Expected 0, got 1. at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEventFunction() at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEvent() at com.secrettowriting.StanPlayer.display::Intro/removeIntro() at flash.utils::Timer/_timerDispatch() at flash.utils::Timer/tick() The addNav function in the Navigation class should expect 0 arguments/variables and I'm not sending any arguments/variables to it, which is why I'm confused as to why it's saying I'm getting 1.
