• RESTFul: state changing actions

  I'am planning to build RESTfull API but there are some architectural questions that are creating some problems in my head. Adding backend bussiness logic to clients is option that I would like to avoid since updating multiple client platforms is hard to maintain in real time when bussiness logic can rapidly change. Lets say we have article as a resource ( api/article ), how should we implement actions like publish, unpublish,activate or deactivate and so on but to try to keep it as simple as possible? 1) Should we use api/article/{id}/{action} since a lot of backend logic can happen there like pushing to remote locations or change of multiple properties. Probably the hardest thing here is that we need to send all article data back to API for updating and multiuser work could not be implemented. For instance editor could send 5 seconds older data and overwrite fix that some other journalist just did 2 seconds ago and there is no way that I could explain to clients this since those publishing an article is really not in any way connected to updating the content. 2) Creating new resource can also be an option, api/article-{action}/id , but then returned resource would not be article-{action} but article which I'am not sure if this is proper. Also in server side code article class is handling actuall work on both resource and I'm not sure if this goes against RESTfull thinking Any suggestions are welcomed..

  To increase the FD limit for a daemon process running under a headless user on a Ubuntu Linux machine we did following changes in /etc/security/limits.conf soft nofile 10000 hard nofile 10000 We also added session required pam_limits.so in /etc/pam.d/login. The changes got reflected for all the users who logged out and logged in again. Whatever new processes are starting under those users are getting new FD limits. But for the daemon which is running under a headless user the changes are not getting reflected. what is the way by which the changes can be reflected for the daemon which is running under headless user ?

The files produced are smaller than if the pages are compressed separately because the compressor can extract and share redundant information accross multiple pages. To assemble a bunch of DjVu images into a single BUNDLED document simply type: djvubundle page1.djvu page2.djvu.... pageN.djvu document.djvu To assemble a bunch of DjVu images into an INDIRECT document, type: djvujoin page1.djvu page2.djvu.... pageN.djvu documentdir/index.djvu where documentdir must be an existing directory where all the individual page files will be copied. • A different interface for the Sql Server Reporting Service?

  I have a SQL Server 2005 SQL Reporting Services implementation. It seems that the only way to actually access the reports is for the users to use Internet Explorer. The web page uses an ActiveX control to do its printing (and probably other functions as well). Does SSRS have a different way to access its functionality via the web browser? Like maybe Java or HTML based? If so, how do I actually turn it on? The reason I am asking is because the security is being tightened and ActiveX controls will be banished, thus the users won't be able to print.

  Need Help on the following questions. When a users login (on a computer in the network) is validated against AD what is/are the authentication method used? When a users login is validated in Windows NT environment (not AD) what is/are the authentication method used? If all user's account is on AD, is it possible to change the authentication mechanism only (or protocols) from AD to NT and vice versa (if possible)? If part/whole of question 3 is valid, where should one look to change these authentication methods ? What is the difference between AD and Windows-NT authentication ? • Use one home directory for more than one operating system

  I want to configure the same user account across multiple operating systems. Right now, I'm set up for general use in Mac OS 10.6.6 "Snow Leopard," and I have about 200gb of files in my home directory (/Users/justjake/). I want to use this user (and home directory) for other operating systems on other partitions. For example, I have Mac OS 10.5 installed on a 12gb partition. How can I share permissions, user accounts across my two operating systems? Would moving the my /Users directory from 10.6 to it's own partition then mounting it using /etc/fstab solve my issue?

• Interpreting Munin graphs showing available entropy and MySQL slow queries in sync

  We're experiencing performance issues on our website, and after reviewing our munin graphs, the only metrics we've found in sync are Available entropy and MySQL slow queries, with the latter influenced by our number of logged in users: Based on the wikipedia entropy page, my understanding is that entropy is the amount of randomness (here measured in bytes) that the system can use for various tasks, mainly cryptography and functions that require random input. Since the peaks in available entropy and MySQL slow queries are occurring in sync and at regular interval, that the number of MySQL slow queries is proportional to our number of Drupal users whereas the peaks in available entropy seem to be much more constant and less proportional to these 2 metrics, we're thinking available entropy is the reflect of a root cause which, combined with the traffic to our website, is causing those slow queries (and not the opposite, slow queries influencing the entropy). Accordingly: Q: What underlying problem do you think could cause regular peaks in available entropy that could have an influence on MySQL's ability to process queries?

• Why is my vhosts file interfering with my apache deployment?

  When I enable my vhosts file (i.e. uncomment this line: Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf) I am unable to reach localhost. I /am/ able to reach the last virtual host listed in my vhosts file: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/Users/achan/Sites/epwbst" ServerName epwbst </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/Users/achan/Sites/pxproj" ServerName pxproj </VirtualHost> Typing pxproj in my browser brings up the expected web content. But I am unable to reach epwbst or localhost. If I re-comment the vhost line in my httpd.conf, I am able to reach local host (i.e. "It works!") but obviously am unable to reach my virtual hosts. I don't know how to continue troubleshooting this. Why can't I reach localhost when I've got my vhosts turned on? OS: Mac OS X 10.7 Server version: Apache/2.2.21 (Unix)

  Suppose you have a computer with two or more operating systems, and a certain piece of software whose license terms allows it to be installed on one computer, and it does a daily check with a remote server to verify that your serial is only used on the original install computer. You install this software on each of your OSes, but since its a different OS the remote server would have to determine that it is not on the same computer, and so would disable your license. So my question, when a license refers to a single computer, does a situation like this usually count as a single computer, or do the multiple OSes sort of make it multiple computers? How do you think a software vendor (specifically thinking AV companies that do this sort of serial check) would handle this situation?

• How to present a stable data model in a public API that allows internal data structures to be changed without breaking the public view of the data?

  I am in the process of developing an application that allows users to write C# scripts. These scripts allow users to call selected methods and to access and manipulate data in a document. This works well, however, in the development version, scripts access the document's (internal) data structures directly. This means that if we were to change the internal data model/structure, there is a good chance that someone's script will no longer compile. We obviously want to prevent this breaking change from happening, but still want to allow the user to write sensible C# code (whilst not restricting how we develop our internal data model as a result). We therefore need to decouple our scripting API and its data structures from our internal methods and data structures. We've a few ideas as to how we might allow the user to access a what is effectively a stable public version of the document's internal data*, but I wanted to throw the question out there to someone who might have some real experience of this problem. NB our internal document's data structure is quite complex and it could be quite difficult to wrap. We know we want to expose as little as possible in our public API, especially as once it's out there, it's out there for good. Can anyone help? How do scripting languages / APIs decouple their public API and data structures from their internal data structures? Is there no real alternative to having to write a complex interaction layer? If we need to do this, what's a good approach or pattern for wrapping complex data structures that include nested objects, including collections? I've looked at the API facade pattern, which looks like it's trying to address these kinds of issues, but are there alternatives? *One idea is to build a data facade that is kept stable across versions of our application. The facade exposes a set of facade data objects that are used in the script code. These maintain backwards compatibility and wrap access to our internal document's data model.

• IE does not send NTLM domain

  I have a problem with NTLM single-sign-on with IE8. We've got multiple domain controllers and users from multiple domains that we try to authenticate to a web application via NTLMv1 passthru. Somehow IE fails to send the user's domain in the NTLM Type 1 message. This has the effect that the webapp can not match users properly to their domain controllers, resulting in failed logon attempts, because a user from domain X tries to authenticate to domain controller Y. This problem does not occur with Firefox, as it always sends the correct domain header. So: how do I get IE to send the domain in the NTLM header?

• What equipment do real ISP's use?

  In a dormitory of 550 residents, people often mistakenly set up DHCP servers for the whole network by plugging in their private Wi-Fi routers wrongly. Also recently, someone mistakenly configured their PC to a static IP being the same as that of the default gateway. We use cheap 3Com switches at the moment. I know that Cisco switches support DHCP snooping to solve the DHCP problem, but that still does not solve the default gateway IP takeover problem. What sort of switch equipment do real ISP's use so their customers cannot break the network for the other customers? What we ended up doing In case anyone are courious, we ended up doing seperate VLANs for each user. And as a matter of fact, not just the 550 users, but for 2500 users (11 dorms).   We have servers on which we run tests and all users connect using the same credentials. The server allows 2 connections. What happens often is that one user is already active and the other two users keep hijacking the remaining session. Using query session, I can find out what are the active connections. But it does not list the client machine from where the session originates, which taskmanager displays. How do I get this information from a remote machine? I prefer a command line solution.   My OS is windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. My video folder location is C:\Users\User\Documents\Downloads\Video. I Can't create folder in the Video folder or see the files i saved. But I can see the files in the root location of the folder i.e by going to the folder from My Computer. I can create and find files when I go to the folder My Computer>C>Users>User>Documents>Downloads>Video. This is an unusual problem I have never seen.   I have an external hard drive, and I wish to grant permissions on some files to users from 2 different computers without having to hook it up to the 2 different computers. I know the SID of the user on the other computer, I'd like to know if and how I can grant permissions to files using the SID. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bits, and "The Other" computer Win 7 Home Premium 64 bits, they are not in a domain, but separate computers on a home network (not even same homegroup).   We are planning to move mysql to dedicated box. At this moment we have web servers and mysql is running on each. Question is: cheaper is to buy 10G switch and put 10G network card into mysql server. Or buy normal gigabit switch and connect mysql box to switch with multiple network cables. In 1G scenario then we give each web server different mysql IP address. I don't think, that mysql box with one 1G link is enough to to satisfy multiple web box mysql traffic. At this moment we have 3 servers witch are running mysql/web. Plan is to add fourth server for mysql only. Thanks. Edit: if we buy 1G switch with mini-GBIC ports. Can we put in mini-GBIC 10G connectors and then connect mysql box to that port?

• How to share code as open source?

  I have a little program that I wrote for a local group to handle a somewhat complicated scheduling issue for scheduling multiple meetings in multiple locations that change weekly according to certain criteria. It's a niche need, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are other groups that could use software like this. In fact, we've had requests from others for directions on starting a group like this, and if their groups get as big, they might also want special software to help with scheduling. I plan to continue developing the program and eventually make it an online web app, but a very simple alpha version is completed as a console app. I'd like to make it available as open source, but I have no idea what kind of process I should go through first. Right now, all I have is Java code, not even unit-tested thoroughly. I haven't shown the code to anyone else. There is no documentation. I don't know where I would put the code so others could access it. I don't know anything about licensing it. I don't know what kind of support people will expect from me if I release it as open source. I have no idea what else I should worry about. Can someone outline for me (or post an article(s) that outlines) the process of taking open source software from "coded" to "completed / available"? I really don't want to embarrass myself by doing things weirdly.

  I am trying to stream a video from my TorrentFlux-b4rt server. I tried multiple media players, none work. Only VLC was able to produce an error message: input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'mms://..*.*:8080/'. Check the log for details. I have tried multiple computers on different networks and all have the same issue. I am using Windows 7 to play the videos, and the server is Torrentflux-b4rt 1.0-beta2 with ubuntu 9.10.

• Removing emails from all mailboxes with certain text in subject

  So, we had an errant program kick off about 15,000 emails to our users. I have our spam filters now blocking these on the edge until that gets resolved, but now I would like to clean our our users' mailboxes for them. Is there anyway with Exchange 2007 to remove all emails with certain text in the subject line? It would need to be a partial match because the subject changes slightly for each email. I am trying to do this with Forefront's manual scan job + content filter, but it does not seem to like partial matches on the subject.

• 32bit Application Memory Usage on 64bit Windows 7

  I have an early 2012 Macbook Pro with and Intel I7 processor and 16 gigs RAM running Windows 7 Professional 64bit via Bootcamp. I work in Geographical Information Systems as a programmer so most of the applications I am running are 32bit Applications, but tend to use a lot of resources (i.e. ArcGIS, SQL Server Express, Visual Studio, etc.). I have been noticing that when I have multiple instances of either the same 32bit application or different 32bit applications and they are all working on hefty processing tasks, I am still only topping out at about 30% memory use. I understand 32bit applications are limited to less than 4gb RAM, but I assumed that one instance could use its own 4gb while another instance could use another 4gb to take full advantage of all the memory I have installed. Can anyone explain how this works and how I can get my applications to take advantage of all my memory via running multiple instances?

• Multi-Resolution Mobile Development

  I'm about to start development on my first game for mobile phone (I already have a flash prototype completed so it's jsut a matter of "porting" it to mobile and fixing up the code) and plan on hopefully being able to get the game working on iphones and most android devices. I am using Haxe along with OpenFL and HaxeFlixel for development. My question is: What resolution should I design the game in initially and/or what is the best way to develop a game for multiple resolutions. I have found multiple different methods, the best, in my opinion, being strategy 3 on this page: http://wiki.starling-framework.org/manual/multi-resolution_development. However I have some questions about this. First, what would the best base resolution to use be, the guide suggests 240*320 which seems alright to me, although if I chose to use pixel graphics as I most probably will given I'm using HaxeFlixel, I'm not sure if they'll look too blocky on larger screens which I'm not even sure is a problem as it might still look alright. (Honestly, not sure about that and if anyone has any examples of games that use this method and look nice). Finally, please feel free to share whatever methods you use and think is best. For example, HaxeFlixel has a scaling feature that scales the game to fit the exact screen size, but I'm afraid that would lead to blurry and improperly scaled graphics since it would scale by non-integers. But, I'm not sure how noticeable a problem that may or may not be. Although from experience I'm pretty sure it won't look nice and currently I do not think I'm going to go for this option. So, I would really appreciate any help on this subject. Thank you in advance.
