• DrayTek Vigor 2920(n): VPN with VLAN restrictions?

  Hi, I'm currently installing a DrayTek Vigor 2920n router in a new office. This router is to be used for 2 seperate companies. For one of these companies, the router has a LAN-2-LAN (VPN) connection to a datacenter configured. The other company should not be able to access this other (VPN-)network. I'm aware of the capability of this router to have VLAN's, but I cannot figure out how to configure the VPN-connection to only be accessible for VLAN0 and not for VLAN1. I know I can also add another router to physically split both networks, but we bought the DrayTek with the idea that it could easily have the VPN-connection available for VLAN0 and not for VLAN1. VLAN1 can easily be in another subnet, that's fine, although, I don't know how to configure that on this DrayTek. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance, Dirk

• Wi-Fi performance in Windows 8 RP on a MacBook Air (mid 2011)

  I was able to install the Boot Camp Windows software using the executable that it provided, and there are no unrecognized or unknown devices in Device Manager. Wi-Fi works but it seems to be limited to an extremely slow 1.5Mbits. Network Center reports an 802.11n connection (at 65Mbps usually) but transfers never reach above about 200kB/s. Being limited to 1/20th of the connection speed of my internet service is quite frustrating. Does anybody experience the same issue? I have been trying to identify the Broadcom Wi-Fi chipset and a driver that I could try to upgrade to but I have made very little progress on Google on this front.

• SQL SERVER – Simple Installation of Master Data Services (MDS) and Sample Packages – Very Easy

  I twitted recently about: ‘Installing #sql Server 2008 R2 – Master Data Services. Painless.‘ After doing so, I got quite a few emails from other users as to why I thought it was painless. The reason was very simple- I was able to install it rather quickly on my laptop without any issues. There were a few requests along with these emails sent to me, which regards to how to install MDS, as well sample databases. Please note that I am the admin of my machine and I installed this MDS as the admin as well. Talk to your network administrator to figure out the best suitable settings for better security of login users. Additionally, since MDS is only supported on a 64-bit machine, I had rebuilt my computer a week before with a 64-bit OS and 64-bit SQL Server to go with it. Here is a quick picture tour of the installation. First of all, go to your SQL Server 2008. Install self-extracted folder and find the .msi file for C:\1033_enu_lp\x64\setup\masterdataservices.msi. Once you clicked on the file, follow the image tour below. You can ask me any questions in case you are still confused with any of the steps of the installation. While searching the internet for a similar installation process, I have landed on the official blog of MDS team where they have many interesting posts about it. If any concept written on my posts are contradictory to the information on the official blog, I suggest that you should follow the advice of official blog. • TCP/IP- what is it exactly?

  I know that this question sounds stupid, but over all these years, I still have difficulty explaining TCP/IP to people. I don't completely get it myself, and even after reading up on it, the distinction is not very clear. What I get so far is that IP deals with networks while TCP involves delivery of messages over that network. I'm not totally convinced though. Also, they reside on different layers of the Internet architecture. Could anyone disambiguate this distinction using a simple analogy or examples? Also, I read this somewhere The difference is that TCP is responsible for the data delivery of a packet and IP is responsible for the logical addressing. In other words, IP obtains the address and TCP guarantees delivery of data to that address. Is this correct? Thanks for helping me out. One last thing- Where does the ethernet come in all of this?

  JavaOne Latin America started officially today, but lots of networking has already happened. Last night some JUG leaders, Java Champions, and members of the Oracle Java development and marketing teams had dinner together. The conversation ranged from the new direction of JavaFX to how to improve JUG attendance. Maricio Leal shared the idea some Brazilian JUGs have of putting Java Evangelists and experts on a boat and having them visit JUGs on cities along the Amazon river.  We discussed ideas, and shared dessert pizza. It was the perfect community get together! If you see Brazilian Java Man Bruno Souza, ask him what he is bringing to the party.Today, at JavaOne Latin America, all the sessions were full, and developers were spilling into the hallways. Session content was selected with the help of 14 Java thought leaders from Latin America. JavaOne Program Committee Chair, Sharat Chander, said "I'm thrilled that at this JavaOne over half of the content is coming from the community." Between sessions, developers take advantage of the Oracle Technology Network lounge to grab a snack and use their laptops.  OTN LoungeIt promises to be a great JavaOne.

• New WebLogic Server 12.1.2 Installation and Patching Technology By Monica Riccelli

  WebLogic Server 12.1.2 has many new features, but the first new feature you are likely to notice is the change in installer technology. WebLogic Server and Coherence 12.1.2 are installed using Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) installer technology. We have also changed WebLogic Server patching technology from SmartUpdate to OPatch, the patching tool used to patch OUI installations. Note that installation and patching technology used for prior versions of WebLogic Server has not changed. The primary motivation for this change is to provide consistency across the Oracle stack. Prior to WebLogic Server 12.1.2, Fusion Middleware customers were required to use different technologies to install and patch, for example, Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) with WebLogic Server. Now users can perform installation and patching across products more efficiently by using the same technologies, and by using new installation packages that simplify installation of Fusion Middleware products with WebLogic Server. • How to SSH to guest ubuntu OS in vmplayer4

  I have installed vmplayer4.0.4 on Windows7, and install ubuntu12.04 as Guest OS. Basically i have two problems: Default vmplayer use NAT for network access. I could ping the guest OS from the Host OS. But how could i access the Guest OS from outside the Host OS? If i change to Bridged Mode, sure the Guest Ubuntu OS could get DHCP ip in the same subnet as Host OS. But i could not ping the Guest OS from the Host OS, or vice versa, even if i disable the iptables firewall on Ubuntu Guest OS like following: iptables -F iptables -X iptables -t nat -F iptables -t nat -X iptables -t mangle -F iptables -t mangle -X iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT I could not figure it out, could anyone help on this issue? • DNS Settings in Cisco Wireless Lan Controllers

  The WLC is a 2100 series and I have looked back and forth through the entire web interface. Originally the idea was that the gateway should be the DNS controler and the WLC pointed directly at the gateway. For some reason, random clients are having DNS specific issues when it comes to seeing certain shares around the network. The problems are also very intermittent. Aside from going to each box and implementing a static DNS is there ACTUALLY a DNS setting lodged into the WLC settings (and I am being a numpty and can't find them) or am I stuck with performing the config 1 by 1?

• Exim4 delivery to parent domain.

  I've set up an ubuntu server 9.1 system with exim4 as a relay for e-mail on my network. I've told exim that it is part of a subdomain: sub.domain.com I can test and deliver messages fine to my gmail accounts. I cannot get exim4 to sent messages to [email protected] though. The error received in the logs shows that exim thinks it should be delivering messages for domain.com to localhost instead of the actual MX for domain.com Is there an easy way to modify the debconf update-exim4.conf.conf so that is has the relay_to_domains capability?

• qemu command not running directly

  Can I use "qemu://localhost/system " command directly inplace of "virsh -c qemu://localhost/system " command if my both machines are physically connected in a network as virsh will simply creating the virtual shell between two systems? can I use ssh in place of virtual shell here? I tried this but system gives no directory or file name for qemu even when i had qemu installed properly in my system. but when i use virsh i did not get such errors. Do i need to open any unix socket for doing this?

• Dual mode 802.11n PCI adapters

  I have recently bought a DLink DIR-825 router. It is a dual mode (2.4GZ & 5GHZ) 802.11n wireless access point/router. What is a good PCI adapter to pair with it? DLink appear to only make one dual mode adapter, which is the DWA-160 USB adapter. They don't seem to have a PCI adapter in their range, which seems very strange. Do any of the other network manufacturers make a good dual mode adapter?

• What's the likely culprit in email delay?

  If anyone can shed light or point me to a tutorial, I'd appreciate it. We are a tiny company and have experienced occasional delays in receiving email sent between staff members. We are in separate cities but all in the same state; our webhost/email ISP is across the country from us. If it matters, we're on Macs and most of use Entourage. Our email configurations are POP server: companyname.com and SMTP: smtp.companyname.com (When we used our DSL providers for SMTP we had unreliable service) Our ISP says they're not seeing delays related to their equipment and the problem is elsewhere in the network. A co-worker believes that the delays are with the ISP. Is there a good way to figure this out?

• CentOS running inside VMware as WebServer times out on outside connection

  I have a CentOS machine running inside VMware, and I have got PHP and Apache set up on it, so if I open a browser (on the VM) and go to either localhost, or 192.168.0.3, I get a phpinfo page I made in /var/www/html/index.php, but, if on the host (Windows 7), in my browser I go to 192.168.0.3, it times out. I can ping the IP address from Windows and get a response, I just can't through the browser. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get this working? This is my first time using a VM and I'm getting lost in the network settings.

  I am setting up a small network and i am stuck at rerouting the Links folder on Windows 7. What i am trying to accomplish is to keep some particular directories stored on a server and all client computers will actually link to those folders, one of which is the Links folder. I took a look at the registry and found most of the things in : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders But the Links folder isn't there so im wondering if it's possible to sync that folder over several PCs too without moving all the user directories to the server Any hint is appreciated!

• Route packets from one VPN to another

  I have two OpenVPN servers (10.8.0.0 and 10.9.0.0) set up on my OpenSUSE server. Within one network, each computer is visible to any other one, but I'd like to make it so that computers are visible across networks. I'd like to route the packets like this: when a user (say 10.8.0.6) pings an address on the other VPN (10.9.0.6), the packets are routed to the 10.9.0.1 and then to the appropriate computer in this VPN. How do I achieve this using iptables or a different tool? I tried the commands at the end of this section with no avail.

  Hi! When I try to push a DNS server via the OpenVPN server-config I don't get that server to be the first DNS server on the connected client system. It ends up being specified as an alternative DNS server. push "dhcp-option DNS 89.238.75.146" # DNS-Server 1 (local djbdns) To overcome certain network restrictions, if they're at place, I use 443 TCP. - That means that my DNS queries are sent via TCP (if I manually reconfigure the DNS server), which doesn't scale very well from a performance perspective. • ubuntu automount: only mounting drives as root?

  I'm sharing the /mount dir with smb so users on my network can access use drives added to my linux box. Users are able to read files but not write, modify or delete files or directories. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 server edition with halevt installed for usb auto mounting. Afaik halevt is automounting the drives to /media/ but the drives are showing up as: drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 20480 2010-12-29 20:40 disk drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 24576 2010-12-21 17:20 Sparta mount gives me: /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw) /dev/sdb1 on /media/disk type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) /dev/sdc1 on /media/Sparta type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) When I umount the drives, the folders /media/disk and /media/Sparta are both removed. I tried changing the permissions with chown to nobody:nogroup but it doesn't work (which I assume is because they are ntfs drives).

• DTrace for Oracle Linux news: new beta release and conference appearances

  A new set of RPM packages of our port of DTrace for Linux has just been published on the Unbreakable Linux Network. This is another beta release of our ongoing development effort to bring the DTrace framework to Linux. This release includes the following changes: The packages are now based on the final public release of the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 2 (2.6.39). The previous beta drop was based on a development version of the 2.6.39 kernel; there is no new functionality specific to DTrace in this release. The primary goal was to get the code base in sync with the released kernel version. Based on the feedback we received from some users in how their applications interact with dtrace, libdtrace is now a shared library. However, the API/ABI is not fully stabilized yet and may be subject to change. As a result of the ongoing QA testing, some test cases were reorganized into their own subdirectories, which allows running the test suite in a more fine-grained manner. As reminder, we have a dedicated Forum for DTrace on Linux, to discuss your experiences with this release. This week, the Linux DTrace team also attendeded the second dtrace.conf in San Francisco, to talk about their work. The sessions were streamed live and recordings are also available. • Windows Server Backup 2012 error - "The version does not support this version of the file format."

  I'm trying out Windows Server 2012, specifically Windows Server Backup, as it would be a very useful way to see us through until we can upgrade our 'real' backup system. I'm backing up to a network share, and a Server 2008 WSB works fine. On the 2012 server however, I get an error: Backup of volume \?\Volume{298d1a7d-f80f-11e1-93e8-806e6f6e6963}\ has failed. The version does not support this version of the file format. It's a VHDX written by WSB, so I'm not sure what version it's complaining about. I can see a whole bunch of files in the destination, so I don't think it's a simple authentication issue, but I only get about 8Mb of VHDX written.

• Question regarding an NAS server and remote users

  I have a client that requires a massive amount of storage space but: Doesn't want to spend very much money Needs remote users (across the country) to be able to pull data from it and store to it, as well. Can this be done with an NAS Server such as the Western Digital Sharespace Network Storage System? I do not believe the client wants to spend over $1400 and HP is offering 8TB for $1299. Also, if anyone has any other ideas besides using NAS, please let me know. Thanks in advance for any help.
