• Annoying Search Behavior - Search Companion

  I'm running Windows XP Professional, and ever since the last service pack I've had a searching problem. When I want to search a network drive, I get the following message: This folder is not indexed. To search this directory plase use Search Companion or add this directory to your index via options. Basically, I have two questions. Is there some way that I can use the indexed search where appropriate and then have it switch over to the Search Companion automatically? Second, how does a programmer look at this code and think this is a good idea? I realize that this question is rhetorical. However, I must enter my search string into one search, receive the error, and then click "Search Companion" to bring up the new search window. This window doesn't even take the defaults from the previous one so I have to specify the search string and drive again.

• Monitor flashes black when starting video files, opening folders with video files

  My entire monitor flashes black for a second or so when starting any video file. It does the same thing when closing the file. It also does this when opening a folder that has video files and a thumbnail view, or when I do anything that presumably accesses the video stream inside a video file. It happens in VLC and Windows Media Player, though it occurs to me certain video editors I have like avidemux and virtualdub don't have that issue when opening video files... It also does not happen when watching flash-based videos on web sites. It doesn't seem to happen when Quicktime. I went through and uninstalled any extraneous programs a week or so ago and didn't see any change. I also updated the graphics card driver. What can I do to troubleshoot/fix this?

• remote desktop to Fedora 20 with xrdp

  I was able to setup xrdp on my Fedora 13 machine and access it from my Windows 7 machine by follow the steps on the first post on this thread It was simple and easy. But when i try the same on my Fefora 20 machine, things are quite different. There is no error message but some new info like these: # chkconfig --levels 35 xrdp on Note: Forwarding request to 'systemctl enable xrdp.service'. # service xrdp start Redirecting to /bin/systemctl start xrdp.service and then I cannot remote it from my window machine. I also did the following based on the last post of above threa: # yum -y install tigervnc-server Any configuration I should do to make xrdp works for me? I was able to ping each other. EDIT: I can access the shared folder on my Windows machine from my Fedora 20. It seems the problem is on the Fedora side. how to know the service on linux is running? The "service --status-all" cannot give me useful information.

• Email client supporting multiple accounts

  I've been using Microsoft Outlook for a very long time, although one thing that has bugged me is how multiple email accounts are handled. As far as I can tell, there isn't a set and straightforward way of managing multiple accounts in one instance of outlook. For example, when I create an email, saving it as a draft will by default dump it into the first personal folder that I have open, which in my current case, is not where I want it. I would like all trash, spam, drafts, contacts, etc. etc. to be handled on a PF by PF basis. Now to my question: Is there a way to accomplish the task of email account "segregation" in Outlook (2007 is my current version), or is there another client that handles this in a more organized fashion? Note: I don't use most of the features in outlook (I hardly even need special formatting for my messages), I generally just send and read mail, and get a few attachments, so leaving Outlook wouldn't be too much of a stretch for me.

• Can a file change size when the transfer protocol changes?

  I am very curious about what I have just found happening on my computers. I have set up SyncBackPro to synchronize a music folder from my home desktop to my laptop using Windows network share (SMB). Files get synchronized regularly. Now I tried to switch to FTP and I noticed that NO FILE matches its counterpart even if they have never been modified (I make sure there is the readonly flag and no application is allowed to retag MP3s and whatever...), so SyncBack asks me what side should overwrite the other. FTP files are a little larger than local files. I run synchronization from the laptop. How can such a thing happen? Files are the same, bytes should be the same... If I run SMB sync again it matches all the files again.

  Hi, I have a Windows XP desktop and a MacBook Pro on my home network. I would like to mount my "home directory" (My Documents, or whatever they call it in Windows) onto my MacBook's filesystem. So far I have been able to do this with the Shared Documents folder, using the excellent howto at Maclive. But I'd like to be able to authenticate using my Windows XP username and password, and access my files remotely without exposing them to everyone on the nextwork. Any clues or good links?

• Mount TMPFS instead of ro /dev

  I am working on a ARM-Based embedded system with a custom Debian Linux based on kernel 2.6.31. In the final system, the Root file system is stored as squashfs on flash. Now, the folder /dev is created by udev, but since there is no hot plugging functionality needed and booting time is critical, I wanted to delete udev and "hard code" the /dev folder (read here, page 5). because i still need to change parameters of the devices (with ioctl /sysfs) this does not work for me in this case. so i thought of mounting a tmpfs on /dev and change the parameters there. is this possible? and how to do best? my approach would be: delete /dev from RFS create tar containing basic devices mount tmpfs /dev untar tar-file into /dev change parameters Could this work? Do you see any problems? I found out, that you can mount on top of already mounted mount point, is it somehow possible just to take data with while mounting the new file system? if so that would be very convenient! Thanks Update: I just tried that out, but I'm stuck at a certain point. I packed all my devices into devices.tar, packed it into /usr of my squashfs and added the following lines to mountkernfs.sh, which is executed right after INIT. #mount /dev on tmpfs echo -n "Mounting /dev on tmpfs..." mount -o size=5M,mode=0755 -t tmpfs tmpfs /dev mknod -m 600 /dev/console c 5 1 mknod -m 600 /dev/null c 1 3 echo "done." echo -n "Populating /dev..." tar -xf /usr/devices.tar -C /dev echo "done." Over that my echo's are not executed. If I then log in, /dev is mounted as TMPFS as desired and all the devices reside inside. When I redo the "mount" command to mount the UBIFS partitions it is executed whitout problem and useable. From squashfs VFS: Mounted root (squashfs filesystem) readonly on device 31:15. • How do I backup Firefox add-on like "Fastdial" addon for a reinstall?

  I am doing a new install of Firefox and over the years my Windows "roaming folder" I use for backup has gotten all clogged up from so many add-ons and crap... I want to backup just a couple Firefox add-on's, one is "Fast dial" How do I backup this add-on and its addresses for when I reinstall Firefox and the add-on, so It will go back to where it is now? Most add-on's have a backup feature like "too many tabs" bookmarks and such but fast dial doesn't? so How do I backup this add-on? and /or addons like it without a backup feature?   I have a one desktop running windows 7 ultimate connected to Ethernet cable. And I want to share folder to another wifi connected laptop (also windows 7 ultimate). Both machines are on the same home internet connection. I have tried to share folders by going to properties sharing advanced sharing permissions checked all the boxes to allow all but I don’t see any shared files on my laptop. I know it’s possible to share folders between two Wi-Fi connected machines but how can it be done when one pc is cable connected and other is Wi-Fi connected on the same internet connection.

• How to prevent a URL in an email I send from being auto-linked by the recipient's email client?

  When I type a URL into an email in Outlook, it automatically converts it to a hyperlink. I can, of course, remove the hyperlink from the context menu: But, then when the email is received and when I view it in my Sent Items folder, the urls are again converted to hyperlinks. How can I prevent this? Embedded images are no good because the URL must be copy and pasteable (among numerous other reasons that this approach is not great). And it must retain the formatting applied when I send it. This answer on stackoverflow shows a good trick for preventing auto linked urls when sending an email programmatically, but I'm looking for a way to do this from the UI. Perhaps there a way to edit the HTML of the message before it is sent? If not, I guess I'm off to write an Outlook Add-in.

• rsync over SSH with cron in osx-environment

  I want to automatically download files and folders from a Linux server to which I have an SSH (and FTP) account. The files shall be downloaded on a regular basis (I suppose a cron is the right tool to do so) onto an OS X machine. I tried the following rsync command, which works fine: rsync -avzbe ssh [email protected]:/www/htdocs/something/somefolder /Users/me/folder/foo/ However I have to enter the account's password every time (the SSH account on the server machine). The server is a managed one and I'm afraid I can't change the password. Here are my questions: How do I bypass the entering of the password by storing it somewhere How do I automate this then correctly?

• Sendmail : Mail delivery of same domain to internal or external mail server.

  Its bit difficult to explain but very simple problem. We have internal sendmail server and hosted server. Both are set to same domain name. We have mixed mail accounts. For example we have two user in one office. [email protected] is local only [email protected] is internal plus external. Internal means we create user on local linux box where sendmail is set. External means we create user on local and hosted server. [email protected] can send mails to any internal user created on Linux box where sendmail is installed. But he can not send mail to outside domain and no mail can be sent to him as there is no account created on external hosted server. [email protected] can send mails to internal as well as all other domains through sendmail's smart_host feature, which uses hosted server's smtp. [email protected] can get all external emails internally through Fetchmail on linux box. Now we have third user [email protected] who will be always outstation and can use external server only. So I can not create account on local linux box for [email protected] because his mail will get delivered locally only. I don't want to create alias and send his mails to gmail or yahoo's account. I want to send emails to his external account from any internal user. How this can be done? Thanks in advance.

• Cron won't use msmtp to send emails in case of failed cronjob

  I'm trying to configure a machine so that it will send me an email if one of the cronjobs output something in case of an error. I'm using Debian Wheezy. Cron is working normally (without the email functionality). msmtp is installed and configured. Have already symlinked /usr/{bin|sbin}/sendmail to /usr/bin/msmtp. I can send email by using: echo "test" | mail -s "subject" [email protected] or by executing: echo "test" | /usr/sbin/sendmail Without the symlink (/usr/sbin/sendmail) cron will tell me that: (CRON) info (No MTA installed, discarding output) With the symlinks I get: (root) MAIL (mailed 1 byte of output; but got status 0x004e, #012) Can you suggest how to config the cron/msmtp pair? Thanks! EDIT: Note: I've written "msmtpd" by mistake. Its not a daemon but rather an SMTP client named just "msmtp" (without the "d" ending). It is executed on demand and it is not running in the background all the time. I can see hidden Files with FarManager and I cannot see them in Windows Explorer(even with show hidden files option?!!) How can I restore it to its original file extension? • How to remove IMAP account from Thunderbird's "Grouped Inbox"

  I have four IMAP accounts "merged" into one using Thunderbird 2's "Grouped inbox" view. I want to take one of the four accounts out of the grouped view. It is a maintenance mailbox that contains a lot of status mails. Those mails tend to clog my "real" inbox. I am able to edit the Inbox folder using "Properties". In the list that comes up, it is possible to de-select the maintenance mailbox and everything works fine. However, if I restart Thunderbird, it will forget what I de-selected and use all four mailboxes again. Is there any way to make Thunderbird remember the change?

It gives instructions to enter the following command to enable opening of Sublime in the terminal. ln -s "/Applications/Sublime Text 2.app/Contents/SharedSupport/bin/subl" /bin/subl After creating that link, it says I should be able to do subl . to open all the files in a folder in Sublime. However, when I do it, it says -bash: subl: command not found My system says the file exists ln: /bin/subl: File exists Any idea what I can do?

• Windows XP waits for usb drive on almost every operation.

  Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed? • How can I update fontconfig to a newer version in Red Hat 5.3?

  I want to update fontconfig to a newer version but it seems that the OS is still finding the old fontconfig and I need the newer version to build qt. How do I make Red Hat 5.3 see the newer version? I do not know if this helps but when I did a search for fontconfig I found some files in a folder called cache. When I do yum update it tells me everything is up to date but that version is too old and is missing FcFreeTypeQueryFace. Just send me a comment if this is wrong site and ill change it.

  I've run into a major display problem on newly installed fedora 11, on my 6 years old pc which runs a pentium4 2.4 GHz processor, 1 gb ddr ram, intel 845 motherboard with integrated graphics card. When i open an image or play a video, my complete screen turns garbled. I simply cannot make out whats on my screen. With difficulty i have to close the image/video window and move around the folder window to clean the screen image. Is it because of my display drivers? How can i fix it? I also ran into mp3 plugins and flash issues which i was able to resovle. I'm new to linux, the sole purpose of isntalling it on my old pc was to learn linux but this display problem is frustrating me. Thanks, Salman

• Thunderbird 3.0 - how to prevent new message indicator from clearing?

  I just installed Thunderbird 3.0 and there are a few things driving me batty. When new email is delivered it has a faint star to the left of the subject (this is different than the new star column thing). In the old days (i.e. last week) the new message indicator wouldn't go away until I read the message or left the folder and returned. Now, as soon as I do anything with any email message, all new message indicators are cleared. How can I go back to the old behavior? Thanks!

• Non-Registry Fix for Secondary Mailboxes Sent Items

  There is a known issue with Outlook and Exchange where "secondary" mailboxes which are mounted in the same profile, e.g. "John Doe" + CorpMailbox1, CorpMailbox2, CorpMailbox3 will place "sent items" from the secondary mailboxes (e.g. CorpMailbox1) in the user's (e.g. "John Doe") Sent Items folder. There is a registry value (something like DelegateSentItems) to semi-fix this, but I'm looking for an Exchange-side solution. It seems like, at some point, an admin made CC rules to fix this, and for the mailboxes where I see a BCC rule: any item sent to [address] BCC to [address]. The behavior "fixes" the issue, but when I duplicate this work-around for new shared mailboxes, the email ends up in the Inbox and not the Sent Items for the shared mailbox. I don't believe there is any outlook/client-side shenanigans going on, as the intended behavior for the older mailboxes works for new PCs/Users (new imagse) without any Outlook Mailbox Rules.

• Can I use IIS to do ActiveDirectory single-sign-on for another website?

  I'm trying to add Active Directory single-sign-on support to an existing SOAP server. The server can be configured to accept a trusted reverse-proxy and use the X-Remote-User HTTP header for the authenticated user. I want to configure IIS to be the trusted proxy for this service, so that it handles all of the Active Directory authentication for the SOAP server. Basically IIS would have to accept HTTP connections on port X and URL Y, do all the authentication, and then proxy the connection to a different server (most likely the same X and Y). Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of IIS or AD (so I am trying my best to learn enough to build this solution) so please be gentle. I would assume that this is not an uncommon scenario, so is there some easy way to do this? Is this sort of functionality built into IIS or do I need to build some sort of IIS proxy program myself? Is there a better option for getting the authentication done and the X-Remote-User HTTP header set than requiring IIS? Update: For example, what I am trying to create is: [CLIENT] [IIS] [AD] [SOAP-SERVER] 1. |---------------->| 2. |<--------------->|<---------->| 3. |--------------------------->| 4. |<---------------------------| 5. |<----------------| 1. • What's wrong with my custom .desktop xsession?

  I want to create a custom Xmonad session that loads an .xsession script in my home folder. This is the original file I copied. This one works: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=xmonad Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession This is my modified file, xmonad-custom.desktop. When I logout, then login choosing this "xmonad-custom", the screen just flashes and sends me back to the ubuntu login screen (as if it briefly logs in and out of the session): [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Custom Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=/home/{username}/.xsession Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gdm I also tried without the last line. • External HDD is always in use when trying to safely remove

  I have a WD 1TB Elements external hard drive and every time I use the Windows 7 "safely remove" feature, it gives me a dialog telling that a process is using the disk. Using Sysinternals Process Explorer and the answer on this question (find everything with the drive letter) I get the following result: What is the $Extend folder and why is it in use? How can I disable it? I cannot remove it using the command line (access denied). Edit: I've followed the instructions over here and under the registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup I have a Multi-String Value named IgnoreNTFS with data \$Extend* /s But this does not make any difference. Also this question is not about a server. Additionally I can tell that I use a program called mkv2vob to convert video files with a Matroska container into something my PS3 will play. I convert the source files straight from my external HDD, but I would expect if this program does not release the lock on the HDD, surely it cannot be locked if the process isn't even running?

• Any "Magic Tricks" For Getting Data Back After Windows 7 Install

  My old man installed Windows 7 without making a proper backup, and now realizes he left behind some important data. He did a true "clean install", so there is no Windows.old folder in the root directory. However, I believe the format performed on the hard drive was only a quick format, so I am hoping there is some chance at data recovery. I took his hard drive out, and have spent a majority of the weekend researching data recovery options. I paid $70 for the GetDataBack software, but have had little success with it. I can see all of the files I want to restore, however they appear corrupt when I try to open them. With that all being said, does anyone know of a viable way to recover some of this data, or is it a lost cause all together?
