  • java: relationship of the Runnable and Thread interfaces

    - by Karl Patrick
    I realize that the method run() must be declared because its declared in the Runnable interface. But my question comes when this class runs how is the Thread object allowed if there is no import call to a particular package? how does runnable know anything about Thread or its methods? does the Runnable interface extend the Thread class? Obviously I don't understand interfaces very well. thanks in advance. class PrimeFinder implements Runnable{ public long target; public long prime; public boolean finished = false; public Thread runner; PrimeFinder(long inTarget){ target = inTarget; if(runner == null){ runner = new Thread(this); runner.start() } } public void run(){ } }

  • Ramifications of CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls=false

    - by Ron Skufca
    I recently updated an application from VS2003 to VS2008 and I knew I would be dealing with a host of "Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'myControl' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on" I am handling this in what I beleive is the correct way (see code sample below). I am running into numerous controls that are going to need a similar fix. Not wanting to have similar code for every label, textbox etc.. that are being accessed by a non UI thread. What are the ramifications of just setting the CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls = false for the entire app? I found a CodeProject article with various workarounds and a warning at the bottom to NOT set the property. I am looking for other opinions/experiences on this issue. private void ShowStatus(string szStatus) { try { if (this.statusBar1.InvokeRequired) { BeginInvoke(new MethodInvoker(delegate() { ShowStatus(szStatus); })); } else { statusBar1.Panels[0].Text = szStatus; } } catch (Exception ex) { LogStatus.WriteErrorLog(ex, "Error", "frmMNI.ShowStatus()"); } }

  • Invalidating session before iPhone application quits

    - by tartox
    Hello I would like to tell the server to invalidate an ongoing session when the user quits the iPhone application. In the app delegate, I send a request to the server in the (void)applicationWillTerminate:(UIApplication *)application method. I am not waiting for a server answer, I just want to send the request and quit. However I cant see any packet leaving the application. The same code in another place works fine. Session has a limited duration anyway and the server will invalidate it after a while, but I would prefer to do it nicely when leaving application. Is it normal that no NSURLConnection can be established from the applicationWillTerminate method ? Thank you.

  • Why call autorelease for iVar definition in init method?

    - by iFloh
    Hi, I just familiarise myself with the CLLocationManager and found several sample class definitions that contain the following init method: - (id) init { self = [super init]; if (self != nil) { self.locationManager = [[[CLLocationManager alloc] init] autorelease]; self.locationManager.delegate = self; } return self; } - (void)dealloc { [self.locationManager release]; [super dealloc]; } I don't understand why the iVar would be autoreleased. Does this not mean it is deallocated at the end of the init method? I am also puzzled to see the same sample codes have the iVar release in the dealloc method. Any thoughts? '

  • In Android ListActivity, how do you apply layout formatting to footers?

    - by johnrock
    In an Android ListActivity, I am adding a button as a footer in a ListView. How can I apply layout formatting to this button like centering it and/or width=fill_parent? I have tried a few things such as using setLayoutParams(), but have not gotten it to work - the footer always disappears when I try anything. Here is the basic code I am working with closeButton = new Button(this); closeButton.setText(getResources().getString(R.string.title_closeprocess)); closeButton.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener(){ public void onClick(View v) { closeProcess(); } }); getListView().addFooterView(closeButton);

  • C++ Linked List - Reading data from a file with a sentinel

    - by Nick
    So I've done quite a bit of research on this and can't get my output to work correctly. I need to read in data from a file and have it stored into a Linked List. The while loop used should stop once it hits the $$$$$ sentinel. Then I am to display the data (by searching by ID Number[user input]) I am not that far yet I just want to properly display the data and get it read in for right now. My problem is when it displays the data is isn't stopping at the $$$$$ (even if I do "inFile.peek() != EOF and omit the $$$$$) I am still getting an extra garbage record. I know it has something to do with my while loop and how I am creating a new Node but I can't get it to work any other way. Any help would be appreciated. students.txt Nick J Cooley 324123 60 70 80 90 Jay M Hill 412254 70 80 90 100 $$$$$ assign6.h file #pragma once #include <iostream> #include <string> using namespace std; class assign6 { public: assign6(); // constructor void displayStudents(); private: struct Node { string firstName; string midIni; string lastName; int idNum; int sco1; //Test score 1 int sco2; //Test score 2 int sco3; //Test score 3 int sco4; //Test score 4 Node *next; }; Node *head; Node *headPtr; }; assign6Imp.cpp // Implementation File #include "assign6.h" #include <fstream> #include <iostream> #include <string> using namespace std; assign6::assign6() //constructor { ifstream inFile; inFile.open("students.txt"); head = NULL; head = new Node; headPtr = head; while (inFile.peek() != EOF) //reading in from file and storing in linked list { inFile >> head->firstName >> head->midIni >> head->lastName; inFile >> head->idNum; inFile >> head->sco1; inFile >> head->sco2; inFile >> head->sco3; inFile >> head->sco4; if (inFile != "$$$$$") { head->next = NULL; head->next = new Node; head = head->next; } } head->next = NULL; inFile.close(); } void assign6::displayStudents() { int average = 0; for (Node *cur = headPtr; cur != NULL; cur = cur->next) { cout << cur->firstName << " " << cur->midIni << " " << cur->lastName << endl; cout << cur->idNum << endl; average = (cur->sco1 + cur->sco2 + cur->sco3 + cur->sco4)/4; cout << cur->sco1 << " " << cur->sco2 << " " << cur->sco3 << " " << cur->sco4 << " " << "average: " << average << endl; } }

  • Adding items to Model Collection in ASP.NET MVC

    - by Stacey
    In an ASP.NET MVC application where I have the following model.. public class EventViewModel { public Guid Id { get; set; } public List<Guid> Attendants { get; set; } } passed to a view... public ActionResult Create(EventViewModel model) { // ... } I want to be able to add to the "Attendants" Collection from the View. The code to add it works just fine - but how can I ensure that the View model retains the list? Is there any way to do this without saving/opening/saving etc? I am calling my addition method via jQuery $.load. public void Insert(Guid attendant) { // add the attendant to the attendees list of the model - called via $.load } I would also like to add there is no database. There is no storage persistence other than plain files.

  • Using a Cross Thread Boolean to Abort Thread

    - by Jon
    Possible Duplicate: Can a C# thread really cache a value and ignore changes to that value on other threads? Lets say we have this code: bool KeepGoing = true; DataInThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(DataInThreadMethod)); DataInThread.Start(); //bla bla time goes on KeepGoing = false; private void DataInThreadMethod() { while (KeepGoing) { //Do stuff } } } Now the idea is that using the boolean is a safe way to terminate the thread however because that boolean exists on the calling thread does that cause any issue? That boolean is only used on the calling thread to stop the thread so its not like its being used elsewhere

    Hi I'm using the below method to write to a file from the Jtextarea and I call this method every 30 second within a Timer but instead to add only new line in file it rewrite the entire lines contained in Jtextarea so then I have duplicate lines. I want to avoid this and update the file just with new lines. Could you help me please. public void loger() { FileWriter writer = null; try { writer = new FileWriter("MBM_Log_"+date()+".txt" , true); textArea.write(writer); } catch (IOException exception) { System.err.println("log error"); exception.printStackTrace(); } finally { if (writer != null) { try { writer.close(); } catch (IOException exception) { System.err.println("Error closing writer"); exception.printStackTrace(); } } } }

  • Why would the first call to a KVC setter have an NSTextField instance as the argument?

    - by Stephen
    If I have a NSTextField bound through an NSObjectController to a model object, I would expect the setter of the model object to be called with an NSString as the argument, but instead, I receive the instance of the control that I am bound too the first time I am called. - (NSString *)property { NSLog(@"returning property"); return property; } - (void)setProperty:(NSString *)string { NSLog(@"recieved %@", string) } - (id) init { if (self = [super init]) { property = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:@"value"]; } NSLog(@"property is %@",property"); return self; } (The program doesn't run if you try anything in setProperty, because it tries to send NSString messages to string - which might be an NSTextField.) Console Output: 2010-05-12 14:19:14.096 Trouble[13108:10b] property is enter value 2010-05-12 14:19:14.100 Trouble[13108:10b] recieved <NSTextField: 0x1025210> 2010-05-12 14:19:14.106 Trouble[13108:10b] returning property

  • Get Process ID of Program Started with C# Process.Start

    - by ThaKidd
    Thanks in advance of all of your help! I am currently developing a program in C# 2010 that launches PLink (Putty) to create a SSH Tunnel. I am trying to make the program able to keep track of each tunnel that is open so a user may terminate those instances that are no longer needed. I am currently using System.Diagnostics.Process.Start to run PLink (currently Putty being used). I need to determine the PID of each plink program when it is launched so a user can terminate it at will. Question is how to do that and am I using the right .Net name space or is there something better? Code snippet: private void btnSSHTest_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { String puttyConString; puttyConString = "-ssh -P " + cboSSHVersion.SelectedText + " -" + txtSSHPort.Text + " -pw " + txtSSHPassword.Text + " " + txtSSHUsername.Text + "@" + txtSSHHostname.Text; Process.Start("C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Putty\\putty.exe", puttyConString); }

I've completed all the things (the log in and message passing part) but when I passes the score via global variable, I am getting only null as a value and not the score that I want. Is there any way to pass data or string to Face book and write on a wall? My code is (void)viewDidLoad { static NSString* kApiKey = @"be60415be308e2b44c0ac1db83fe486b"; static NSString* kApiSecret = @"4f880c7e100321f808c41b1d3c813dfa"; _session = [[FBSession sessionForApplication:kApiKey secret:kApiSecret delegate:self] retain]; score = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@",appDelegate.myTextView]; [_session resume]; [super viewDidLoad]; } whre score is NSString and myTextView is NSString in other viewcontrollerfile, And appDelegate is global variable. Any help?? thanks in advance.

  • vector<string> or vector<char *>?

    - by Aaron
    Question: What is the difference between: vector<string> and vector<char *>? How would I pass a value of data type: string to a function, that specifically accepts: const char *? For instance: vector<string> args(argv, argv + argc); vector<string>::iterator i; void foo (const char *); //*i I understand using vector<char *>: I'll have to copy the data, as well as the pointer Edit: Thanks for input!

  • StreamWriter stops writing when file is opened from web link

    - by fearofawhackplanet
    Following on from my previous question... The following code creates log files on a web server: private void LogMessage(Message msg) { using (StreamWriter sw = File.AppendText(_logDirectory + DateTime.Now.ToString("yyyyMMddHH") + ".txt")) { sw.WriteLine(msg.ToString()); } } The log files are linked to from an admin page on the web site: foreach (FileInfo file in logDir.GetFiles()) { Response.Write("<a href='http:// .... /Logs/" + file.Name + "'>" + file.Name + "</a>"); } I'm getting the problem that after someone looks at one of the log files from the link, that log file stops being written to.

  • Why does it NOT give a segmentation violation?

    - by user198729
    The code below is said to give a segmentation violation: #include <stdio.h> #include <string.h> void function(char *str) { char buffer[16]; strcpy(buffer,str); } int main() { char large_string[256]; int i; for( i = 0; i < 255; i++) large_string[i] = 'A'; function(large_string); return 1; } It's compiled and run like this: gcc -Wall -Wextra hw.cpp && a.exe But there is nothing output. NOTE The above code indeed overwrites the ret address and so on if you really understand what's going underneath.

  • How to create an object reference to a xaml page from App.xaml.cs codebehind?

    - by John K.
    Hi all, I have a Silverlight 4 Business Project where I have enabled the ASP.NET Authentication/Authorization role information. I would like to pass the currently authenticated user's account information from the app.xaml.cs codebehind to a different XAML page, but I have no idea how that is done, or if it's even possible. My goal is to databind the IsEnabled property of various buttons of my target XAML page, based on whether the current user is in a particular admin related role or not. The Application_UserLoaded event handler of app.xaml.cs seems to be the safest event handler to initiate this task because it fires only after the user's account information is loaded from the server. I had previously attempted to retrieve the current user information directly from my target XAML page, but I was never getting the current user information because Application_UserLoaded hadn't finished loading the current user info yet. public partial class App : Application { private void Application_UserLoaded(LoadUserOperation operation) { // How do you create an object reference to a XAML page from your project solution // from this event handler? } } Thanks in advance for any assistance, John
