• Is the new windows 8 sdk usable with visual c++ express 2010 on windows 7?

  This is inspired by and related to Is the June 2010 DX SDK really the latest? asked recently but it's a different question. I won't likely be purchasing the full visual studio 2012 for C++, I intend to use the free visual c++ express 2012 that targets desktop applications when it is released so for now I'm using visual c++ express 2010 running on windows 7. The latest directx11 sdk is the one included in the windows 8 SDK now, it's not a separate release any more. So my question is, can I use the windows 8 SDK to build directx11 programs that work on windows 7 using visual studio express 2010 running on windows 7. Or do I need to stick to the final DirectX SDK release for now?

• Booting the liveCD/USB in efi mode fails on tablet xe700t1a

  My tablet is Samsung Series 7 Slate (xe700t1a-a02fr). It operates an intel sandy bridge architecture. The main issue about this tablet is that it ships with a windows 7 install in (U)EFI mode (GPT partition table, etc.), so I'd like to get an EFI dual boot with Ubuntu. But it seems I can't boot on the liveCD in EFI mode. It starts loading (up to initrd), but I then get a blank (black) screen. I've tried the nomodeset kernel option (as well as removing quiet and splash) with no luck. I have used the 12.04.1 desktop iso (I have read somewhere that it is the only one that can boot in EFI mode). What are the other leads I can follow ? thanks

• Ubuntu CD Boots to Black Screen

  I have a new Asus N76 Notebook and just downloaded the lastest ubuntu 12.10 desktop CD (x64). When I boot from the CD, I get to the selection asking to try or install Ubuntu (the text screen not the one with the Ubuntu logo). When I select one of these options, I get only a black screen. I have tried nomodeset, acpi=off but it does not change anything. I also tried booting a CD and an USB stick (same result). I have no idea what to try next. I have installed Ubuntu on several computers yet, never had this problem. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Thomas

  I setup a vpn server using pptpd on the ubuntu server which is installed in a virtual box machine on a windows 7 desktop. I configure the vpn server and port forwarding in the windows. However, I cannot setup a connection to the server. Here's the ubuntu log I got when I tried to connect to this vpn server Anyone can help me solve this problem? Also, is there any alternative way to setup a vpn server on windows or virtual machine installed on windows? Thanks!

• UBUNTU 12.04 Networking

  I have installed UBUNTU 12.04 on my Athlon 64-bit Desktop (2GB Memory) in a dual-boot with Win XP. The machine is hardwired to my D-Link N router which uses a DSL Modem to access the Internet. My Home Network was established in the router via the XP machine. When I boot UBUNTU I am able to access the Internet via this set-up but I can neither access the home network nor see the three other laptop computers (wireless access) on the network. These others are running Win Vista, Win 7, and UBUNTU 10.04 (this latter accesses the home network normally). All are visible and accessible when XP is running. I would appreciate thoughts as I am seriously thinking about changing all the computers to UBUNTU but do need to be able to operate the network.

The solution to a system with different interfaces(or clients i should say) is to go with developing a Web service and have other systems interact with it. I never had the requirement for developing a Web service so i am bit short on it. All i understand is that A web service is a system or application that performs some operations which may include modifying, sending or receiving data over a network using HTTP protocol. (Let me know if the understanding is wrong) Now, from the other question it's clearly understood that i need to develop a web service but i have no idea as to how should i go about it. My language of choice is C# and .NET Framework. Question:: How do we develop a webservice and which tools,technology and framework should i use for the same using C# language?? • Please Help with ATI Radeon 4250 and Xinerama

  I am using ubuntu 11.10 fresh install and I am having problems making the second screen to work, I remember before I was able to do it by extending the desktop to a larger number like 3840 X 1080 but since I am new I completely forgot how to do it, Now I have a philips 230 E monitor full 1920 X 1080 and a Toshiba tv HDMI and I want to activate the second monitor to be able to use Xinerama but I don't know how to go about this, I want to keep the Phillips as a primary monitor since it's the smaller one and use the TV from time to time to play videos movies and presentations. I installed all the additional drivers and don't know what else to do. I would prefer if I can use a list of exact commands to copy and paste onto the terminal since that is all I know how to use LOL . Thank you so much for your help.   A lot of interesting things happed in my life recently. I won the “Windows @ Work Contest”  from IT Toolbox and as I was not eligible to get the prize I arranged a 500 US$ donation to Kidsave.org. April 1st was also a very special day in my life, not only it was April Fools days, but it was also when I first received my Microsoft MVP Award for Windows Desktop Experience. I had enough time to celebrate, but my boss went on vacations the day before. Today he came back to the office with a very nice surprise. Yes! • UNHCR and Stanyslas Matayo Receive Duke's Choice Award 2012

  This year, NetBeans Platform applications winning Duke's Choice Awards were not only AgroSense, by Ordina in the Netherlands, and the air command and control system by NATO... but also Level One, the UNHCR registration and emergency management system. Unfortunately, Stanyslas Matayo, the architect and lead engineer of Level One, was unable to be at JavaOne to receive his award. It would have been really cool to meet him in person, of course, and he would have joined the NetBeans Party and NetBeans Day, as well as the NetBeans Platform panel discussions that happened at various stages throughout JavaOne. Instead, he received his award at Oracle Day 2012 Nairobi, some days ago, where he presented Level One and received the Duke's Choice Award: Level One is the UNHCR (UN refugee agency) application for capturing information on the first level details of refugees in an emergency context. In its recently released initial version, the application was used in Niger to register information about families in emergency contexts. Read more about it here and see the screenshot below.
