  I am trying to unit test / verify that a method is being called on a dependency, by the system under test. The depenedency is IFoo. The dependent class is IBar. IBar is implemented as Bar. Bar will call Start() on IFoo in a new (System.Threading.Tasks.)Task, when Start() is called on Bar instance. • Simple in-place discrete fourier transform ( DFT )

  I'm writing a very simple in-place DFT. I am using the formula shown here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrete_Fourier_transform#Definition along with Euler's formula to avoid having to use a complex number class just for this. So far I have this: private void fft(double[] data) { double[] real = new double[256]; double[] imag = new double[256]; double pi_div_128 = -1 * Math.PI / 128; for (int k = 0; k < 256; k++) { for (int n = 0; n < 256; n++) { real[k] += data[k] * Math.Cos(pi_div_128 * k * n); imag[k] += data[k] * Math.Sin(pi_div_128 * k * n); } data[k] = Math.Sqrt(real[k] * real[k] + imag[k] * imag[k]); } } But the Math.Cos and Math.Sin terms eventually go both positive and negative, so as I'm adding those terms multiplied with data[k], they cancel out and I just get some obscenely small value. I see how it is happening, but I can't make sense of how my code is perhaps mis-representing the mathematics. Any help is appreciated. FYI, I do have to write my own, I realize I can get off-the shelf FFT's.

• Excel COM Add-In dialog interrupts script

  Hi all! I have written an Excel COM Add-In in C++ for automation of Excel with VBA. It contains an own dialog showing some general informations about the Add-In. Now i create a button in Excel that opens the dialog. Leaving the dialog with the escape key leads to an Excel message that the script is being interrupted instead of just closing the dialog. I could suppress the interruption message with: Application.EnableCancelKey = xlDisabled But that seems not to be the solution as the script can not be interrupted any more.   In my excel file, I have a table setup with formulas. with Cells from Range("B2:B12"), Range ("D2:D12"), and etc every other row containing the answers to these formulas. for these cells (with the formula answers), I need to apply conditional formatting, but I have 7 conditions, so I've been using "select case" in VBA to change their interior background based on their number. I can input my data, let the formulas work, and when everything is ready, I can run the macro and format those specific cells. I want an easy way to do this, obviously I could waste a load of time, typing out all the cases for every cell, but I figured it'd be easier with a loop. how would I go about writing a select case loop to change the formatting on a a specific range of cells every other row? thank you in advance.

• Moving a ASP.NET application to the cloud

  I am new to cloud computing, so please bear with me here. I have an existing ASP.NET application with SQL Server 2008 hosted on a Virtual Private Server. Here's what it briefly does: The front end accepts user's requests and adds them to a DB table A Windows Service running in the background picks up the request, processes it and sets a flag. The Windows Services also creates a file for the user to download. User downloads file I'd like to move this web application with the service to the cloud. The architecture I envision is that I'll have 1 Web server in which I will install the front end and the windows service. I'll also have a cloud files server for file storage. The windows service should somehow create a file and transfer it to the cloud file server (I assume this is possible?) My questions: Does the architecture look like I am going in the right direction? I know Amazon has been providing cloud services for a long time. If I want to do minimal changes to my application, should I go with Amazon, Rackspace, Azure or some other provider? I understand that I would not only pay for file storage and web server but also for the bandwidth of users downloading the file and the windows servic uploading the file to the cloud server. Can I assume these costs are negligible? Should I go with VPS + Cloud Files combination to begin with? Any other thoughts/suggestions?

• Design pattern to use instead of multiple inheritance

  Coming from a C++ background, Im used to multiple inheritance. I like the feeling of a shotgun squarely aimed at my foot. Nowadays, I work more in C# and Java, where you can only inherit one baseclass but implement any number of interfaces (did I get the terminology right?). For example, lets consider two classes that implement a common interface but different (yet required) baseclasses: public class TypeA : CustomButtonUserControl, IMagician { public void DoMagic() { // ... } } public class TypeB : CustomTextUserControl, IMagician { public void DoMagic() { // ... } } Both classes are UserControls so I cant substitute the base class. Both needs to implement the DoMagic function. My problem now is that both implementations of the function are identical. And I hate copy-and-paste code. The (possible) solutions: I naturally want TypeA and TypeB to share a common baseclass, where I can write that identical function definition just once. However, due to having the limit of just one baseclass, I cant find a place along the hierarchy where it fits. One could also try to implement a sort of composite pattern. Putting the DoMagic function in a separate helper class, but the function here needs (and modifies) quite a lot of internal variables/fields. Sending them all as (reference) parameters would just look bad. My gut tells me that the adapter pattern could have a place here, some class to convert between the two when necessery. But it also feels hacky. I tagged this with language-agnostic since it applies to all languages that use this one-baseclass-many-interfaces approach. Also, please point out if I seem to have misunderstood any of the patterns I named. In C++ I would just make a class with the private fields, that function implementation and put it in the inheritance list. Whats the proper approach in C#/Java and the like?

  I'm using Xcode for C++ on my computer while using Visual Studio at school. The following code worked just fine in Visual Studio, but I'm having this problem when using Xcode. clock c1(2, 3, 30); Everything works just fine, but it keeps giving me this error that says "Expected ';' before 'c1'" Fine, I put the ';' .. but then, it gives me this error: "'c1' was not declared in this scope" Here's the whole header code: #include <iostream> using namespace std; class clock { private: int h; int m; int s; public: clock(int hr, int mn, int sec); }; clock::clock(int hr, int mn, int sec) { h = hr; m = mn; s = sec; } Here's the whole .cpp code: #include "clock.h" int main() { clock c1(2, 3, 30); return 0; } I stripped everything down to where I had the problem. However, as I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing, depending on the WHERE statement at the end of my stored procedure, it either returns everything within the table or nothing at all. • Using MinHash to find similiarities between 2 images

  I am using MinHash algorithm to find similar images between images. I have run across this post, How can I recognize slightly modified images? which pointed me to MinHash algorithm. Being a bit mathematically challenged, I was using a C# implementation from this blog post, Set Similarity and Min Hash. But while trying to use the implementation, I have run into 2 problems. What value should I set universe value to? When passing image byte array to HashSet, it only contains distinct byte values; thus comparing values from 1 ~ 256. What is this universe in MinHash? And what can I do to improve the C# MinHash implementation? Since HashSet<byte> contains values upto 256, similarity value always come out to 1. • Elegantly handling constraint violations in EJB/JPA environment?

  I'm working with EJB and JPA on a Glassfish v3 app server. I have an Entity class where I'm forcing one of the fields to be unique with a @Column annotation. @Entity public class MyEntity implements Serializable { private String uniqueName; public MyEntity() { } @Column(unique = true, nullable = false) public String getUniqueName() { return uniqueName; } public void setUniqueName(String uniqueName) { this.uniqueName = uniqueName; } } When I try to persist an object with this field set to a non-unique value I get an exception (as expected) when the transaction managed by the EJB container commits. I have two problems I'd like to solve: 1) The exception I get is the unhelpful "javax.ejb.EJBException: Transaction aborted". If I recursively call getCause() enough times, I eventually reach the more useful "java.sql.SQLIntegrityConstraintViolationException", but this exception is part of the EclipseLink implementation and I'm not really comfortable relying on it's existence. Is there a better way to get detailed error information with JPA? 2) The EJB container insists on logging this error even though I catch it and handle it. Is there a better way to handle this error which will stop Glassfish from cluttering up my logs with useless exception information? Thanks.

If I call my PutFile method, and step into this, it gets to the "//if the bucket doesn't exist, create it" line, then exits. No exception, no errors, nothing. It doesn't complete (i've set breakpoints on my event handlers too) - it just exits. If I run the same method without the ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem then it runs fine... Am I missing something?

• Android:Playing bigger size audio wav sound file produces crash

  Hi Android experts, I am trying to play the bigger size audio wav file(which is 20 mb) using the following code(AudioTrack) on my Android 1.6 HTC device which basically has less memory. But i found device crash as soon as it executes reading, writing and play. But the same code works fine and plays the lesser size audio wav files(10kb, 20 kb files etc) very well. P.S: I should play PCM(.wav) buffer sound, the reason behind why i use AudioTrack here. • List.Sort in C#: comparer being called with null object

  I am getting strange behaviour using the built-in C# List.Sort function with a custom comparer. For some reason it sometimes calls the comparer class's Compare method with a null object as one of the parameters. But if I check the list with the debugger there are no null objects in the collection. My comparer class looks like this: public class DelegateToComparer<T> : IComparer<T> { private readonly Func<T,T,int> _comparer; public int Compare(T x, T y) { return _comparer(x, y); } public DelegateToComparer(Func<T, T, int> comparer) { _comparer = comparer; } } This allows a delegate to be passed to the List.Sort method, like this: mylist.Sort(new DelegateToComparer<MyClass>( (x, y) => { return x.SomeProp.CompareTo(y.SomeProp); }); So the above delegate will throw a null reference exception for the x parameter, even though no elements of mylist are null. UPDATE: Yes I am absolutely sure that it is parameter x throwing the null reference exception! UPDATE: Instead of using the framework's List.Sort method, I tried a custom sort method (i.e. new BubbleSort().Sort(mylist)) and the problem went away. As I suspected, the List.Sort method passes null to the comparer for some reason.

I am beating myself to think out what I am missing, but still can't make it work. • Static variable not initialized

  Hi all, I've got a strange problem with a static variable that is obviously not initialized as it should be. I have a huge project that runs with Windows and Linux. As the Linux developer doesn't have this problem I would suggest that this is some kind of wired Visual Studio stuff. Header file class MyClass { // some other stuff here ... private: static AnotherClass* const Default_; }; CPP file AnotherClass* const Default_(new AnotherClass("")); MyClass(AnotherClass* const var) { assert(Default_); ... } Problem is that Default_is always NULL. I also tried a breakpoint at the initialization of that variable but I cannot catch it. There is a similar problem in another class. CPP file std::string const MyClass::MyString_ ("someText"); MyClass::MyClass() { assert(MyString_ != ""); ... } In this case MyString_is always empty. So again not initialized. Does anyone have an idea about that? Is this a Visual Studio settings problem? Cheers Simon

• printf and Console.WriteLine - problems with Console.SetOut?

  i have a bunch of Console.WriteLines in my code that I can observe at runtime. I communicate with a native library that I also wrote. I'd like to stick some printf's in the native library and observe them too. I don't see them at runtime however. I've created a convoluted hello world app to demonstrate my problem. When the app runs, I can debug into the native library and see that the hello world is called. The output never lands in the textwriter though. Note that if the same code is run as a console app then everything works fine. • ContentControl + RenderTargetBitmap + empty image

  Im trying to create some chart images without ever displaying those charts on the screen. I'v been at this for quite a while and tried a lot of different things but nothing seems to work. The code works perfectly if I display the chart in a window first, but if I don't display it in a window, the bitmap is just white with a black border (no idea why). I have tried adding the chart to a border before rendering and giving the border a green borderBrush. In the bitmap, I see the green borderBrush then the black border and white background but no chart. I don't know where the black border is coming from as the chart is not contained in a black border. I have tried adding the chart to a window without calling window.Show() and again just the black boarder and white background. However if I call window.Show() the bitmap contains the chart. I have tried using a drawingVisual as explained here, same result. • Getting minimum - Min() - for DateTime column in a DataTable using LINQ to DataSets?

  I need to get the minimum DateTime value of a column in a DataTable. The DataTable is generated dynamically from a CSV file, therefore I don't know the name of that column until runtime. Here is code I've got that doesn't work... private DateTime GetStartDateFromCSV(string inputFile, string date_attr) { EnumerableRowCollection<DataRow> table = CsvStreamReader.GetDataTableFromCSV(inputFile, "input", true).AsEnumerable(); DateTime dt = table.Select(record => record.Field<DateTime>(date_attr)).Min(); return dt; } The variable table is broken out just for clarity. I basically need to find the minimum value as a DateTime for one of the columns (to be chosen at runtime and represented by date_attr). I have tried several solutions from SO (most deal with known columns and/or non-DateTime fields). What I've got throws an error at runtime telling me that it can't do the DateTime conversion (that seems to be a problem with Linq?) I've confirmed that the data for the column name that is in the string date_attr is a date value.
