• Mount shared folder (vbox) as another user

  I'm trying to mount my vbox shared folder every time my ubuntu starts. So, I added an entry on /etc/init with this: description "mount vboxsf Desktop" start on startup task exec mount -t vboxsf Desktop /var/www/shared Seems to work, except by the fact that all the files are owned by "root", and I don't have permission to write on the folder (neither chmod nor chown seems to be working). So, how can I make all the files under this shared folder to be owned by www-data user/group? Thanks ps.: The main reason for me to have an automatic shared folder, is so I can create/edit files from the HOST on the GUEST www folder. If you have a better idea for that, instead of sharing the folder, fell free to say.

• How to make sure that grub does use menu.lst?

  On my Ubuntu 9.04 ("Karmic") laptop I suspect grub does not use the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. What happens on boot is that I see a blank screen and nothing happens. When I press ESC I see a boot list which is different from what I would expect from the menu.lst file. The menu lines are different and when I choose the first entry it does not use the kernel options that are in the first entry in menu.lst. Where do the entries that grub uses come from? How can I find out what happens, is there a log? I could not find anything in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/dmesg about grub using a menu.lst. How can I set it to work like expected?   So, one of my servers has a hard disk failure.   I'm using fail2ban to block web vulnerability scanners. It is working correctly when visiting the site if CloudFlare is bypassed, but a user can still access it if going through it. I have mod_cloudflare installed. Is it possible to block users with IPtables when using Cloudflare? • Limit vsftpd upload to a given set of file-names

  I need to configure an anonymous ftp with upload. Given this requirement I try to lock this server down to the bear minimum. One of the restrictions I wish to impose is to enable the upload of only a given set of file-names. I tried to disallow write permission to the upload folder, and put in it some empty files with write permission: /var/ftp/ [root.root] [drwxr-xr-x] |-- upload/ [root.root] [drwxr-xr-x] | |-- upfile1 [ftp.ftp] [--w-------] | `-- upfile2 [ftp.ftp] [--w-------] `-- download/ [root.root] [drwxr-xr-x] `-- ... But this approach didn't work because when I tried to upload upfile1, it tried to delete and create a new file in its' place, and there is no permissions for that. Is there a way to make this work, or perhaps use a different approach like abusing the deny_file option?

• GNU screen - Unable to reattach to screen after lost connection

  I was using irssi in screen but lost connection. After I ssh'd back in to the server, I can no longer attach to that screen. screen -ls shows that the screen is already attached. I tried screen -D to force detach it, and it said detach but screen -ls still says it's attached. I tried screen -x and it just hangs there. [sub@server ~]$ screen -ls There are screens on: 4033.poe (Detached) 7728.irssi (Attached) 2 Sockets in /var/run/screen/S-sub. What can I do now?

• Fix a tomcat6 error message "/bin/bash already running" when starting tomcat?

  I have a Ubuntu 10.04 machine that has tomcat6 on it. When I start tomcat6 with /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start I get * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 /bin/bash already running. and the server fails to start. Unfortunately, there is nothing in /var/log/tomcat/catalina.out to help debug the issue. With some cleverly placed echo statements it seems to be the line from /etc/init.d/tomcat6: start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \ -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \ -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH" The only thing I've changed in this script is TOMCAT6_USER=root. In servers.xml, the only thing I've changed is <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1" from port 8080. I have tried reinstalling the package by first removing everything sudo apt-get --purge remove tomacat6 and then sudo apt-get install tomcat6 but this has not solved the issue. I have also restarted the server multiple times in hopes of some magic. Everything was working until I restarted my server. Any ideas?

• How to check sshd log?

  Hello. I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed with sshd and i can successfully connect to it using login and password. I have configured an RSA key login and now have "Server refused our key" as expected. Ok, now i want to check sshd log in order to fingure out a problem. I have examined /etc/ssh/sshd_config and it have SyslogFacility AUTH LogLevel INFO Ok. I'm looking at /var/log/auth.log and... it's empty O_O. Changing Loglevel to VERBOSE helps nothing - auth.log is still empty. Any hints how i can check sshd log?

• Is an ACPI GPE storm normal in an Ubuntu session?

  In a previous question (What is a an ACPI GPE storm?), I asked about ACPI GPE storm. Looking closer to my kern.log file in /var/log/, I notice that in every session at some point (usually withing 20' after startup) a GPE storm is triggered. When I open kern.log immediately after startup, I see that the 'GPE-storm' can be triggered by anything (a copy-action, the opening of an app like Firefox or Thunderbird, etc...). This worries me. Looking for other ACPI related events in kern.log, I find these error messages. • Site Isn't Enabled When Apache Restarted and No Error Message

  I have added a new sites-available file but the site isn't enabled when apache is restarted. All the existing sites continue to work fine. There is no error message in /var/log/apache2/error.log There is the message, in the error log showing that I shut down the server and restarted: caught SIGTERM, shutting down There is nothing fancy about the site. The only special thing is the name is: domain_name.tv I can't imagine why that would matter, but at this point I can't imagine why the site isn't enabled or at least an error message given. Server running Ubuntu 12.04.

• Deploying war files in tomcat6

  I am using tomcat5.5 for a long on ubuntu servers 8.10 and 9.10 and '/usr/share/tomcat/webapps/' is the path where I place my .war files and access them on the browser over network. On a sytem I've installed tomcat6 and I'm failing to find that where do I place my .war file of tomcat6's webapps. I checked deploying war under /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/ and the war file is extracted and I think this should be the location but I could not access the page when I tried http://serverip:8080/myapp. I could access the default page properly when I navigate to http://serverip:8080. The same war file is working fine on tomcat servers which were not installed from apt repository. • cannot mount remote partition using fstab/fuse

  Using a combination of http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2007/01/02/mount-remote-directories-securely-with-ssh-ubuntu-6061-610/ and http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html I figured I could mount the root of another computer to somewhere on my new laptop to make it easier to transfer files and stuff. Now, I can connect through SSH and browser the files through an ad-hoc mount - but I would like to be able to do this automatically, and so had a look at fstab. my new entry in fstab is: remote_comp:/ /var/remote_comp fuse defaults 0 0 but testing with mount -a results in the following error: /bin/sh: remote_comp:/: not found I thought the problem was because I was trying to mount the root of the other computer, but even trying sub-directories result in the same error message.

• Page_BlockSubmit - reset it to False, if there is a scenario when page doesn't postback on validation error

  Recently, I was facing a problem where if there was a validation error, and if I changed the state of checkbox it won't postback on first attempt. But when I uncheck and check again , it postbacks on second attempt...this is some quirky behaviour in .ASP.Net platform. The solution was to reset Page_BlockSubmit flag to false and it works fine. The following explanation is from http://lionsden.co.il/codeden/?p=137&cpage=1#comment-143   Submit button on the page is a member of vgMain, so automatically it will only run the validation on that group. A solution is needed that will run validation on multiple groups and block the postback if needed. Solution Include the following function on the page: function DoValidation() { //validate the primary group var validated = Page_ClientValidate('vgPrimary ');   //if it is valid if (validated) { //valid the main group validated = Page_ClientValidate('vgMain'); }   //remove the flag to block the submit if it was raised Page_BlockSubmit = false;   //return the results return validated; } Call the above function from the submit button’s OnClientClick event. <asp:Button runat="server" ID="btnSubmit" CausesValidation="true" ValidationGroup="vgMain" Text="Next" OnClick="btnSubmit_Click" OnClientClick="return DoValidation();" /> What is Page_BlockSubmit When the user clicks on a button causing a full post back, after running Page_ClientValidate ASP.NET runs another built in function ValidatorCommonOnSubmit. Within Page_ClientValidate, Page_BlockSubmit is set based on the validation. The postback is then blocked in ValidatorCommonOnSubmit if Page_BlockSubmit is true. No matter what, at the end of the function Page_BlockSubmit is always reset back to false. If a page does a partial postback without running any validation and Page_BlockSubmit has not been reset to false, the partial postback will be blocked. In essence the above function, RunValidation, acts similar to ValidatorCommonOnSubmit. It runs the validation and then returns false to block the postback if needed. Since the built in postback is never run, we need to reset Page_BlockSubmit manually before returning the validation result.

• Xerox Workcentre 3119 and Linux

  I'm trying to get Xerox Workcentre 3119 printer to work on Linux. It's a multifunction device (printer and scanner). I run the CUPS web interface at: http://localhost:631/ and it recognizes it on USB port and even suggests Gutenprint driver from the list. When I try to print a test page, the printer goes through "warming up" process (i.e. lights blink and sound is heard) but does not print anything. There are no errors in /var/log/cups/error_log and access_log shows as if everything is ok. The printer works fine in Windows XP. Does anyone have any experience with this printer on Linux?

  I just unpacked the latest phpMyAdmin into /var/www/html/phpMyAdmin and it is giving me "The mysqli extension is missing." - how do I install this? I'm on Centos. • How can I configure a NameCheap domain to point to an Apache subfolder? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to make domain point to another web directory? My boss just bought the domain: sergiotapia.me for me, and agree'd the host my Wordpress blog on company servers. We're using Apache (latest version). The domain is purchased on NameCheap.com and the DNS settings are as follows: And when I visit my URL, it's getting redirected to my VPS server without problems. The thing is, I want my blog to appears at once, not have a user select the folder and then see the blog. My Wordpress blog is located at: /var/www/sergiotapia.me On IIS, you would need to edit the Bindings and map a domain to an application. I'm guessing I have to do something similar on Apache. What am I looking for here? Any tips on getting this working correctly?
