• Advantage of WPF app vs Winform for business apps?

  I know asp.net and winform development. I am not the type of developer who jumps into a new technology just because it's new. It needs to give me extra benefits like higher productivity. What are the advantages of WPF over Winforms for pure business apps? I am not interested in the extra eye candy, animation, gradients, image display effects and so on which WPF provides. The business apps are for data entry, data reporting and maybe some charts and static display of photos. How will WPF help in these apps? Better richer data binding? WinForm is a mature proven technology and I like the fact I can do everything in Visual Studio vs multiple IDE's for WPF (VS & Blend family). Plus I think WPF doesn't have as rich data binding controls like their Winform counterparts (DataGridView..etc). AFAIK, Microsoft will still support Winforms for many years. Try to convince someone like me to switch.

  Hi! First time poster. Very new to mod_rewrite. I'm on a shared server and the context of this problem is with a virtual directory under my root account. The domain (domain.tld) will have subdirectories representing annual mini-sites of static .html files. Subdirectory names (yyyy) will be the 4-digit year (e.g., "2010"). I want any call to domain.tld/yyyy/file.html to appear as yyyy.domain.tld/file.html in the browser address bar, and (of course) for the page to load properly. I already force dropping “www” by using… RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.domain\.tld [NC] RewriteRule (.*) http://domain.tld/$1 [R=301,L] So far so good. But no matter what I try after that, I can’t get the subdomain to force to the front of the domain. Here’s one of the more complicated examples I’ve tried (no doubt wrong)… RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain\.tld/([0-9]+)/([a-z-]+)\.html [NC] RewriteRule (.*) %1.domain.tld/%2.html [NC] This doesn’t break anything (that I can tell), but it doesn’t do what I want either. I.e., if I type yyyy.domain.tld, I’ll see yyyy.domain.tld in the address bar, and navigating around will give me yyyy.domain.tld/file.html, etc. Fine. But if also type domain.tld/yyyy I’ll see domain.tld/yyyy, etc, which is not how I want people to see it. It doesn’t redirect or mask or alias or whatever you call it. Is it even possible to force one look over the other like that? Should I be handling this with DNS instead? Thanks in advance!

  i have a database in MySql that has a name column in it which contains several words(description). I am connected to database with java through eclipse.   I'm playing around with WPF Binding and variables. Apparently one can only bind DependencyProperties. And the Button sets them to "AAA". But now I replaced the Setter function with the one that is commented out (simulating some manipulation of the given value). I would expect that whenever the property value is changed it will be reset to "BBB". It does so when you press the button, that is when you set the property in code. But it does for some reason not affect the WPF Bindings, that is you can change the TextBox contents and thus the property, but apparently the Setter is never called. I wonder why that is so, and how one would go about to achive the expected behaviour.

• Inconsistent GWT behavior in IE 8

  All, I have a web site that's built with GWT at https://penwag.com/penwag/. If you just hit the site and see the main page, there's supposed to be a login/registration area that displays, along with a teaser for the site. I've tried the site with most of the main browsers - FF 3 & 3.5, IE 6 & 8, Safari, and Chrome, and all appears well to me. However, I have a non-geek user that has visited the site from both work and home. The work computer can see the intro page fine, but the home computer shows only the static content, and non of the javascript-based portion, that is the login/registration and teaser. Both computers are using IE 8. He checked the computer where the site fails, and scripting is enabled. Can anyone else see the problem? (You don't have to register to see the problem, just hit the main page.) Anything else I should check or have him try? Thanks! Edit: The site is implemented using GWT 1.7.0. I'll have to find out about the OS versions. Edit: The one that works is running Windows XT, the failing one is running Windows Vista. (There's a shocker!) I myself have viewed it successfully with both OSs.   My console app will loop through each User to get their Websites, so that it can take new screenshots of them. However, to prevent taking screenshot of the same website twice I have to check whether there already has been taken screenshot of the website, while looping through another users websites. If this is false, let me know, it seems like the most obvious and simple route to take. I know I can add a validation function to the dependency property but I assume that it shouldnt be used for this? I need to communicate the change to legacy systems that cannot yet be bound in XAML. Whats the best way to approach this problem?

• In Rails, a Sweeper isn't getting called in a Model-only setup

  I'm working on a Rails app, where I'm using page caching to store static html output. The caching works fine. I'm having trouble expiring the caches, though. I believe my problem is, in part, because I'm not expiring the cache from my controller. All of the actions necessary for this are being handled within the model. This seems like it should be doable, but all of the references to Model-based cache expiration that I'm finding seem to be out of date, or are otherwise not working. In my environment.rb file, I'm calling config.load_paths += %W( #{RAILS_ROOT}/app/sweepers ) And I have, in the /sweepers folder, a LinkSweeper file: class LinkSweeper < ActionController::Caching::Sweeper observe Link def after_update(link) clear_links_cache(link) end def clear_links_cache(link) # expire_page :controller => 'links', :action => 'show', :md5 => link.md5 expire_page '/l/'+ link.md5 + '.html' end end So ... why isn't it deleting the cached page when I update the model? (Process: using script/console, I'm selecting items from the database and saving them, but their corresponding pages aren't deleting from the cache), and I'm also calling the specific method in the Link model that would normally invoke the sweeper. Neither works. If it matters, the cached file is an md5 hash off a key value in the Links table. The cached page is getting stored as something like /l/45ed4aade64d427...99919cba2bd90f.html. Essentially, it seems as though the Sweeper isn't actually observing the Link. I also read (here) that it might be possible to simply add the sweeper to config.active_record.observers in environment.rb, but that didn't seem to do it (and I wasn't sure if the load_path of app/sweepers in environment.rb obviated that).

• Android Camera intent creating two files

  I am making a program that takes a picture and then shows it's thumbnail. When using the emulator all goes well and the discard button deletes the photo. But not i am trying to integrate Jasper with GWT.I have my server as glass fish server.   I have an interface ProductService with method findByCriteria. This method had a long list of nullable parameters, like productName, maxCost, minCost, producer and so on. I refactored this method by introducing Parameter Object. I created class SearchCriteria and now method signature looks like this: findByCriteria (SearchCriteria criteria) I thought that instances of SearchCriteria are only created by method callers and are only used inside findByCriteria method, i.e.: void processRequest() { SearchCriteria criteria = new SearchCriteria () .withMaxCost (maxCost) ....... .withProducer (producer); List<Product> products = productService.findByCriteria (criteria); .... } and List<Product> findByCriteria(SearchCriteria criteria) { return doSmthAndReturnResult(criteria.getMaxCost(), criteria.getProducer()); } So I did not want to create a separate public class for SearchCriteria and put it inside ProductServiceInterface: public interface ProductService { List<Product> findByCriteria (SearchCriteria criteria); static class SearchCriteria { ... } } Is there anything bad with this interface? Where whould you place SearchCriteria class?

• How to setPage() a JEditorPane with a localfile which is outside of the .jar file?

  My program has the following path in the .jar file src/test/Program.class and my program is as follow... Program.java package test; import java.io.File; import java.io.IOException; import javax.swing.JEditorPane; import javax.swing.JFrame; public class Program { JEditorPane editorPane; public Program() { File file = new File("temp.htm"); try { file.createNewFile(); editorPane = new JEditorPane(); editorPane.setPage(Program.class.getResource("temp.htm")); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } public JEditorPane getEditorPane(){ return editorPane; } public static void main(String[] args) { JFrame frame = new JFrame(); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.setSize(400, 400); frame.setVisible(true); Program p = new Program(); frame.getContentPane().add(p.getEditorPane()); } } The problem is that I have compiled the program in a .jar file. The file.createNewFile(); creates the temp.htm file outside the .jar file So when editorPane.setPage(Program.class.getResource("temp.htm")); is called the file is not found as it searches for file inside the test package. How to setPage() the temp.htm file whiich is outside the .jar file but in the same folder as the .jar file? As the temp.htm is a localfile and I want a relative path instead of an absolute path.   The short version of the question - why can't I do this? I'm restricted to .NET 3.5. T[] genericArray; // Obviously T should be float! genericArray = new T[3]{ 1.0f, 2.0f, 0.0f }; // Can't do this either, why the hell not genericArray = new float[3]{ 1.0f, 2.0f, 0.0f }; Longer version - I'm working with the Unity engine here, although that's not important. What is - I'm trying to throw conversion between its fixed Vector2 (2 floats) and Vector3 (3 floats) and my generic Vector< class. • Callback function and function pointer trouble in C++ for a BST

  I have to create a binary search tree which is templated and can deal with any data types, including abstract data types like objects. Since it is unknown what types of data an object might have and which data is going to be compared, the client side must create a comparison function and also a print function (because also not sure which data has to be printed). I have edited some C code which I was directed to and tried to template, but I cannot figure out how to configure the client display function. I suspect variable 'tree_node' of class BinarySearchTree has to be passed in, but I am not sure how to do this. For this program I'm creating an integer binary search tree and reading data from a file. • How do i set the proxy and SOCKs in libcurl?

  I am trying to configure my .NET app to use a proxy. My source is in C# but i learned CURL via C++. My question is where do i put the SOCKs IP and port? i looked through the documentation and didnt see it. I believe that is what is causing me these problems. When i run this code it will quiet literally timeout and not call my header function or writer function. If i comment out the first two curlopt lines (the two proxy lines) my code runs with no problems. In firefox i set the http proxy and SOCKs host separately, they are different IPs and ports.
