• How to setup a host as a sendmail relay for particular IP subnet

  Hi, By default, sendmail (I have version 8.13 on an RHEL4) allows only local mails. I wanted to allow mails from a particular network to be relayed via the system, so I did the following based on suggestions from various places : /etc/mail/access : Added the subnet and the domain 8.37 RELAY mydomain.com RELAY (I assume this is the originating email's domain) This alone did not work, so I added the following to sendmail.mc FEATURE(access_db)dbl Now, the problem is that it is allowing access from other domains as well. To test it out, I removed 8.37 RELAY from the access, and changed the email from field to [email protected] However, I still receive the mail. What is the correct way to configure this, so that only mails from a particular subnet are relayed ?

• Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

  Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported. • Webserver: chrooted PHP gives mysql.sock error when attempting to reach mysql

  Hey guys, I've configured an Ubuntu webserver with Nginx + PHP5-FPM. I've created a chrooted environment (using jailkit) that I'm tossing my developers into, from where they can develop their test applications. Chroot jail: /home/jail Nginx and PHP5-FPM run outside the chroot, but are configured to function with websites within the chrooted environment. So far, Nginx and PHP5-FPM are serving up files without issue, except for the following: When attempting to connect to MySQL, we receive this error: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' Now, I believe the issue is due to the non-chrooted php.ini referencing mysqld.sock outside of the chroot environment (it's actually using the MySQL default setting currently). My question is, how can I configure PHP to access MySQL via loopback or similar? (Found that as a suggestion in a google result, but without any instructions) Or if I'm missing some other obvious setting, let me know. If there's an option of creating a hardlink (that would remain available even if mysql is restarted), that would be handy as well.

  The below image is the current, and hopefully final, look of the front screen, the app will remember which stack site you have chosen so the user will only see this screen the first time, but they can always go back and change it. The red bar is only there when a new site is added (the StackOverflow is just a test as no site has been added since I implemented this) and can be gotten rid of by tapping the X on the right side (which isn't in the screenshot). Each column now has an edit button where the sites can be rearranged and moved from favourites to non favourites and this is persistent between app launches, moving a site in one column moves it in all of them. I've removed site icons in order to put them in properly so they load lazily and theres no UI freezing. Printing Functionality all implemented and working, thanks to systempuntoout's stackprinter.com works with AirPrint, which means this app will be iOS 4.2 minimum. Current features: 3 columns Email link to question, open in safari and copy link actions History for both questions and sites visited In app notification (red bar at the top) when a new site makes it into beta. StackPrinter in the app, without needing safari, and AirPrint functionality. Facebook Intergration Planned: Local Favourites Watching (a list of questions your watching, like short term favourites, with eventually push notifications) Web service to access local favourites and watches on non-iPad devices.   The main advantage is the use of ReSharper and other add-ons but we need to make a convincing argument for the purchase of Visual Studio 2012 Professional. We are currently using Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows. It is quite good but is hard to switch from using the full Professional version in the past. So far the team has compiled the following list: Extract Interface function missing. Very useful for clean SOLID code. No add-on support. Can’t install StyleCop or productivity tools. AnkhSvn, Spell checker, Productivity PowerTools, GhostDoc, Regex Editor, PowerCommands. The exception assistant is limited in Express edition. This is a big annoyance. • Using DD for disk cloning

  There's been a number of questions regarding disk cloning tools (yes, I did search for it) :) and dd has been suggested at least once. I've already considered using dd myself, mainly because ease of use, and that it's readily available on pretty much all run of the mill bootable linux distributions. To my question, what is the best way to use dd for cloning a disk. I don't have much time to go around, and no test-hardware to play with, so I need to be prepared, and it's pretty much a one-shoot chance to get it done. I did a quick google search, and the first result was an apparent failed attempt. Is there anything I need to do after using dd, i.e. is there anything that CAN'T be read using dd? Thanks!

• How do I maximize and check my gigabit transfer rate?

  I'm trying to maximize my LAN transfer speed. LAN cards and switch are all gigabit on a CAT 6 cable. Modes are set correctly to 1000 full duplex. CentOS server Testing with ftp from both windows and fedora, I'm only having the speed around 11MB/s. On windows I notice that the first few seconds of file transfer I'm actually getting around 25MB/s before it drops to 11MB/s Can anyone please recommend me what my next step should be to increase this performance? Are there any utilities I can use to test the file transfer speed without taking hard drive speed into consideration? The only thing I know is the MTU which I will have to wait until the office hour is over before I can play with it. If there are anything else I should be aware of, please please let me know.   I currently deploy with GAE (google app engine) and I try to implement some AJAX validation. So I got a couple text-fields and "spinners" (ajax loaders) which should be displayed when an AJAX request is sent. But I deploy on my local computer (localhost), so the GAE SDK reacts very fast on any request. It takes about 50-70 ms(miliseconds) to perform the whole ajax request, which is far far away from the real. Is there a way to somehow simulate slow Internet connection? I just want to see how my "spinners" work. I want to test some ajax setting (jquery) about timeouts, errors and so on... Any ideas ?

  One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is the ability to backup and monitor the computers on your network. If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it. • How to make Excel's "Auto Fit Row Height" feature actually auto fit the row height?

  For every generation of Excel I can remember (including 2010, which I'm using now), Excel's "Auto Size Row" features sometimes fails to actually auto size a row when the cell contains wrapped text. When it works properly, all the text is revealed and there is no additional space below the last line of text. When it fails, it adds extra space below the text. To make matters worse, what you see is not always what you get, i.e., text that appeared okay on screen gets cut off when it's printed. You also get different sizing depending on whether you are zoomed in/out or at actual size. Simple test case: Why is there a one-line gap after the text in cell A1 but in A2? (I double-checked that I applied Auto Fit Row Height to both rows. Zoom level is 100%.) Is there any known remedy for this without resorting to manually adjusting the row heights (which is not practical for more than a handful of rows)?

  Hi, I use xampp on windows 7 64, to test locally my php web application I use virtual hosts to have access to my code from different domain names. Now, I created a new version of the code and want to access both versions using different domain names. I added a new virtual host newversion.mysite.local to httpd-vhosts.conf and directed it to the directory of the new version. Also updated the windows hosts file with the line 127.0.0.4 newversion.mysite.local A strange thing happens: when browsing to newversion.mysite.local I'm being taken to the old version, which is located at a different location. How the hell this happens? Please help me with ideas Thank you Gidi

  On our Mac OS X (10.6) Server we have setup several backup scripts that are controlled by launchd and launched at specific times. For this we have defined StartCalendarInterval and this all works very well. Now it happens that I would like to start one of these jobs out of schedule, but this does not start the job (but also does not give an error/warning): sudo launchctl start org.job-label The manpage of launchtl states that start is intended to test on-demand jobs, no word of scheduled jobs. Is there a way to kickstart scheduled jobs?

• IIS 7.5 401.3 Access Denied

  I am having this weird issue with IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 x64. I created a site in IIS and manually created a test file index.html and everything worked. When I try to do a deployment, I copy all the files from my local PC to the IIS server, try to access index.html (this is the proper deployed file) and getting 401.3 access denied error. I then try to manually recreate index.html and copy content into this newly created file and the page is accessible again... I just can't figure this out. So the issue is that IIS 7.5 can't server files that have been copied from other PCs. I tried to reset/apply permission settings to the copied folders/files but nothing has worked. Please help. Thanks! By the way, the files that I copied are just some html cutups i.e. generic html, css and image files, nothing special.

• SQL Performance Problem IA64

  We’ve got a performance problem in production. QA and DEV environments are 2 instances on the same physical server: Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2, 32 GB RAM, 1 Quad 3.5 GHz Intel Xeon X5270 (4 cores x64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives Prod: Windows 2003 Datacenter SP2, 64 GB RAM, 4 Dual Core 1.6 GHz Intel Family 80000002, Model 6 Itanium (8 cores IA64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives, Veritas Cluster I am seeing excessive Signal Wait Percentages ( 250%) and Page Reads /s (50) and Page Writes /s (25) are both high occasionally. I did test this query on both QA and PROD and it has the same execution plan and even the same stats: SELECT top 40000000 * INTO dbo.tmp_tbl FROM dbo.tbl GO Scan count 1, logical reads 429564, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0. As you can see it’s just logical reads, however: QA: 0:48 Prod: 2:18 So It seems like a processor related issue, however I’m not sure where to go next, any ideas? Thanks, Aaron

• TDD/Tests too much an overhead/maintenance burden?

  So you've heard it many times from those who do not truly understand the values of testing. Just to start things out, I'm a follower of Agile and Testing... I recently had a discussion about performing TDD on a product re-write where the current team does not practice unit testing on any level, and probably have never heard of the dependency injection technique or test patterns/design etc (we won't even get on to clean code). Now, I am fully responsible for the rewrite of this product and I'm told that attempting it in the fashion of TDD, will merely make it a maintenance nightmare and impossible for the team maintain. Furthermore, as it's a front-end application (not web-based), adding tests is pointless, as the business drive changes (by changes they mean improvements of course), the tests will become out of date, other developers who come on to the project in the future will not maintain them and become more of a burden for them to fix etc. I can understand that TDD in a team that does not currently hold any testing experience doesn't sound good, but my argument in this case is that I can teach my practice to those around me, but further more, I know that TDD makes BETTER software. Even if I was to produce the software using TDD, and throw all the tests away on handing it over to a maintenance team, it surely would be a better approach than not using TDD at all from the start? I've been shot down as I've mentioned doing TDD on most projects for a team that have never heard of it. The thought of "interfaces" and strange looking DI constructors scares them off... Can anyone please help me in what is normally a very short conversation of trying to sell TDD and my approach to people? I usually have a very short window of argument before falling at the knees to the company/team.

• Network / Internet diagnostic tool to locate an error?

  Hi, I’m facing some difficulties with the Internet / network at my work and I have trouble locating the precise error and when and how it occurs. The problem is that the client machines in the house sporadic is disconnected to the Internet. I’m some what new so I haven’t that much inside in the network and apparently neither has my predecessor. What I am requesting and hoping you guys knows about is, if there exist some kind of network monitor tool I can install and run and it will periodically check the network, the Internet connection etc. and record to logs. Then, if there suddenly arises a problem some time of the day in some part of the network or the Internet connection, I can check it perhaps the next day. I’ve just downloaded and installed Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 application and hopeful it can give me some answers on where the instability is located but I still would like a tool to make different checks and test in some time interval. Do anyone know about such a program or another kind of performance / diagnostic tool / method I can use? Sincere Jesper

• How to compare speed of graphics cards in Windows desktop environment?

  I use Windows 7 and Intel Core i3 CPU with integrated graphics. My problem is that it eats valuable system RAM for display. I can replace it with an old PCIe Radeon X700, so all system RAM will be usable for applications. The question is if an old Radeon X700 is comparable in W7 desktop speed to a new integrated i3 graphics. Are there any test programs which compare the speed of graphic cards in Windows 7 desktop environment (i.e. no Direct3D games, just Windows desktop)? (According to Tomshardware, Radeon X700 is probably even faster than Core i3 in 3D. But there are no native WDDM 1.1 W7 drivers for X700, only WDDM 1.0 Vista drivers are available.)

• Apache VERY high page load time

  My Drupal 6 site has been running smoothly for years but recently has experienced intermittent periods of extreme slowness (10-60 sec page loads). Several hours of slowness followed by hours of normal (4-6 sec) page loads. The page always loads with no error, just sometimes takes forever. My setup: Windows Server 2003 Apache/2.2.15 (Win32) Jrun/4.0 PHP 5 MySql 5.1 Drupal 6 Cold fusion 9 Vmware virtual environment DMZ behind a corporate firewall Traffic: 1-3 hits/sec avg Troubleshooting No applicable errors in apache error log No errors in drupal event log Drupal devel module shows 242 queries in 366.23 milliseconds,page execution time 2069.62 ms. (So it looks like queries and php scripts are not the problem) NO unusually high CPU, memory, or disk IO Cold fusion apps, and other static pages outside of drupal also load slow webpagetest.org test shows very high time-to-first-byte The problem seems to be with Apache responding to requests, but previously I've only seen this behavior under 100% cpu load. Judging solely by resource monitoring, it looks as though very little is going on. Here is the kicker - roughly half of the site's access comes from our LAN, but if I disable the firewall rule and block access from outside of our network, internal (LAN) access (1000+ devices) is speedy. But as soon as outside access is restored the site is crippled. Apache config? Crawlers/bots? Attackers? I'm at the end of my rope, where should I be looking to determine where the problem lies?

• AppUpdater and wamp server

  I've got an winforms application and I want to implement auto updater to this application. I followed the instructions on the site and got everything setup right. (appupdater application) Now I tried a test and I'm getting the following error back from the appupdater: the remote server returned an error 405 I googled this and this is because my server isn't setup with the right access. I'm using a wampserver and in the apache httpd.conf I added the following lines so my directory is allowed for access: <Directory "c:/wamp/www/updater/V11/"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks AllowOverride all # onlineoffline tag - don't remove Order Deny,Allow Deny from all Allow from 127.0.0.1 </Directory> But I'm still getting the same error back. I can find information for the IIS configurations, but not for apache. edit: I'm still getting the error, I opened the error log file of apache and I see the following - "PROPFIND /updater/V11/ HTTP/1.1" 405 238 the updater component is using the HTTP-DAV. edit2: it seems that nobody had this kind of situation.

  I am trying to connect to the MS SQL database using freetds and unixodbc. I have read various guides how to do it, but no one works fine for me. When I try to connect to the database using isql tool, I get the following error: $ isql -v TS username password [IM002][unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified [ISQL]ERROR: Could not SQLConnect Have anybody already successfully established the connection to the MS SQL database using freetds and unixodbc on Ubuntu 12.04? I would really appreciate some help. Below is the procedure I used to configure the freetds and unixodbc. Thanks for your help in advance! • Setting up Ubuntu Server on Amazon EC2 for hosting multiple domains with wildcard subdomains

  I'm trying to set up multiple domains on my Amazon EC2 micro instance running Ubuntu Server 12.04. I installed Apache correctly and set up virtual hosts but having problems with wildcard subdomains. This is what my httpd.conf file looks like NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> UseCanonicalName Off VirtualDocumentRoot /home/username/domains/%0/html/ </VirtualHost> My DNS records (on Amazon Route 53) are: domain.tld A 1.2.3.4 *.domain.tld A 1.2.3.4 If i create a test.domain.tld directory with the html subdirectory, it works fine. But what I want to do is to redirect *.domain.tld to domain.tld in case there is no directory for the sub-domain accessed. I would also like www.domain.tld to redirect to domain.tld. The system should also work if I decide to host another website, example.com, on the server. I tried Googling a lot but without any luck. Suggestions?

• Can not su to normal user

  I have a centos 5.8 box with gitolite installed . It worked fine until I yesterday my gitolite didn't work. ( fatal the remote end hung up unexpectedly) I logged to the box using root account. and then su to git user but I can't. I test again by creating a new user , but I also can not su to that user. Any idea ?, thank you very much. P.S: I installed postfix the day before , but I'm not sure if postfix cause the problem.

• Logging Timeout'd Request in Apache 2.X

  Hello, I am migrating some applications from Apache 1.3 to 2.2. We used to run some tests where attacker opens some HTTP connection to our server, and do nothing. Apache 1.3 would log the following 408 code, for example: 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 But with Apache 2.2, nothing is logged to the log file. I run the same test by using netcat to open the connection: $ nc IP_victim PORT_victim $ nc 10.42.37.3 80 I would like to have Apache 2.2 log the same 408 code to the log file, so that we would know of attempted DoS attack from the outside. Do I need any more configuration in Apache 2 to enable this? I have tried some different configurations such as LogLevel = Debug, Timeout 30, RequestReadTimeout header=10 body=30. Thanks.
