• Is there other ways to do insert/update/delete on a remote oracle database?

  I asked a question recently concerning the speed of execution of insert/update/delete using JDBC driver in a remote machine, but the problem cannot be solved easily. I would like to ask, is there any other way to execute the insert/update/delete to the oracle? The current situation is this: the DB is on a seperate machine than the java program used to update the DB. I looked up the internet and found people suggesting using pure sql or pl/sql to do the update, is that possible? And do we need to operate the sql or pl/sql in a local machine? Because I have no knowledge about pl/sql, so I am not sure if we can create some kind of script and call it on a remote machine. Let say the situation is like this: the input data is on machine A, and the original java program are also on machine A, but the oracle is on machine B. is there any other approach other than JDBC?

• How do I save to an NTFS partition?

  I was using ubuntu 11.04 on my Laptop. While installing it from a DVD, I have created a 10 GB NTFS partition at the beginning of the hard disk, as primary. All other partitions ( swap, a ext3, a ext4 and a FAT32 ) are created in as logical in the extended partition. All were working well in ubuntun11.04. Now the system was upgraded to ubuntu 11.10 via internet and was sucessful. But unable to either create folder/files or to write to existing files in the said NTFS partiton. But files in the partition can read - means mounting done. Same is the case even if logged in as root also. Fortunately no such problem with other partitions including FAT Why it is so, please help.

• Ubuntu 11.04 windows XP dual boot problem

  I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 direct from installation disk in a separate partition alongside an existing Windows XP installation. Ubuntu operates fine. I can see the old XP file system and the other network computer and access the internet. The problem is when the computer starts I get the boot selection list for Ubuntu or XP; but I am not allowed to select Windows XP (I cannot scroll down the list with tab or arrows keys). This would be fine for me but the computer is used by other people who are only familiar with windows XP at the moment. I have downloaded and run Boot Repair.   I am happily learning Ubuntu more closely now. I came across the process ubuntu-geoip-provider in system monitor. Is is used for tracking or for gathering nearest server info, or for syncing time with Internet, or perhaps for all these things? I searched for it but not enough information came through. If it is tracking, what kind of info it is gathering, and why it is doing that? It is based here: /usr/lib/ubuntu-geoip I just wanted more detailed information for that. Also, can this be disabled? Is disabling recommended, or would doing so cause dependency-related (or other) problems?

  I got my brand new Dell Inspiron 14z yesterday, but failed to install Ubuntu. I can boot from a USB stick, and it works well. When trying to install, I confirm that the laptop is connected to the internet etc (as in the 2nd picture in the installation guide: How do I install Ubuntu?). When pressing "Continue" I do not get the question on installation type (alongside/replace/something else). Instead I get a window where I can select partitions: // Picture removed due to low reputation... The problem is that I can only select sdb in the drop drop down box, and I can do do nothing with sdb (like adding partitions etc). The main disk (sda) is partitioned using Gparted the following way: // Picture removed due to low reputation As far as I understand from other threads on askubuntu, this should work... What can I do to install Ubuntu alongside with Windows 7?

• Is it only possible to display 64k vertices on the monitor with 16bit?

  I did the first 3D tutorial over at riemers.net and stumbled upon that my graphic card only supports Shader 2.0 (Reach profile in XNA) which means I can only use Int16 to store the indices (triangle to vertex). This means that I can only store 2^16 = 65536 vertices. Also I read on the internet that you should prefer 16-bit over 32-bit because not all hardware (like mine) does support 32-bit. Yet, I am wondering: Do really all game scenes get along with only so little vertices? I though already faces of people used a lot of polygons (which are made up of vertices?). It’s not relevant for me yet, but I am interested: Do game scenes use only 65536 vertices? Do you use some trade-off to display more (e.g. 64k in GPU buffer rest on RAM) Is there some method to get more into the GPU buffer? I already read on some other posts that there seems to be a limit of 64k per mesh too, so maybe you can compact stuff to meshes?

  I sometimes disconect my harddisks for the weeks while only using the internet and I use the Ubuntu Live CD. But every time it needs something while in live desktop it accelerates and makes a lot of noise, also the acceleration takes too long. I want lower drive speed than acceleration lags, because acceleration lags stop me completly exactly when I need something. How can I lower the CD drive speed, say to maximum 16x, without restarting? I can't restart because I only use the CD drive, no harddisks, no flash disks, no network disks. Edit: No USB drives. Setcd does not work for the live session.

  The best domain for my niche and related is owned by a guy in San Fransisco, and I want to buy the domain from him but I don't want to deal with him directly (even though he has contacted me in the past). I need to find an intermediary company that can handle the negotiation for me. I don't expect to have to pay much since the guy has been squatting on it for more than 15 years and according to the Internet Wayback Machine it has never actually been used for anything at all - he has never added any value to it. It kind of irritates me that such a good domain has been sitting in this guy's closet gather dust for 15 years. I know that GoDaddy has a domain buying negotiating service (and the domain is registered through them, which may make it easier), but I really, really do not want to do business with GoDaddy if I don't have too. Do any of you know of other firms that deal with this sort of thing?

  I have 35 windows7 standalone computers right now and planning to setup a LAN/workgroup using ubuntu as a server if its a LAN. Purpose for network.. Files from client computers to be accessed by me and vice versa through a shared folder on the server. Files only include word documents and very small project files. The network wont have Internet at the moment. What I would like to know.. How would i configure the ubuntu server to recognize the clients and will the clients be able to view the shared folders through their windows machines simultaneously? Would appreciate feedback.   I'm an experienced web developer in PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, CSS and I'm running communities where people can register to be able to login and do some stuff. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

  I saw a pop up which said 'updates are available' so I clicked it. I completely forgot that the installation was incomplete, I logged off. NOw when I came back, it told me to do a partial update. I read the internet for information, partial update wasn't the safest thing for me. I tried to log in to skype, it said another skype may exist. That wasn't true, Skype wasn't opened. I'm not sure if it's because of the incomplete update, but I'm quite off, in trouble. Please reply. Thank you Regards Junior

  So first off a thanks to the internet, knoppix and a post over at http://www.overclock.net/windows/879553-msvcr80-dll-missing-catastrophic-failure.html   My Symptoms: my laptop would not boot.  Would not let me get anywhere.  Just like the symptoms in the post.   Thankfully, all I had to do was go rename my avg directory and all was good.  But I needed something to boot from and I knew and trusted Knoppix from my past linux experimental days.    If it wasn't for Knoppix, I would have probably reformatted my machine and I didn't want that.
