  • Visual Studio 2008 SignTool.exe not found

    I can't publish in 2008, I was previously using 2005 and it published just fine. Error 2 An error occurred while signing: SignTool.exe not found. I know there are tons of hits for a search on signtool.exe on google. The ones I've found involve copying the file to X,Y,Z locations and ensuring signtool matches up with your VS command prompt path. When I run my start- program files - visual studio 2008 - Visual Studio Tools - Visual Studio Command prompt. and type signtool.exe it finds the file just fine. I have Visual Studio 2005 professional edition, Visual studio 2008 profession edition, Visual studio 2005 SDK February 2007, just installed Visial Studio 2008 SDK1.1 to see if that would fix it, no luck. I have copied signtool.exe to lots of places that were suggested on the google searches, it is now located at all of the following: C:\Program Files\Visual Studio 2005 SDK\2007.02 C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\Tools C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VB\Bin C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5 C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bin C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\Tools\Bin C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Bin C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\SDK\v3.5\Bin C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VB\Bin\1033 C:\Program Files\Visual Studio 2005 SDK\2007.02\VisualStudioIntegration\Tools\Bin I'm on windows XP 2009-06-12 update I can only publish if I copy signtool.exe to the project folder I'm publishing now.

  • Excel export displaying '#####...'

    I'm trying to export an Excel database into .txt (Tab Delimited), but some of my cells are quite large. When I export into a txt some of the cells are exported as '#######....' which is surprisingly useless. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you know an easy fix?   • How to obtain dependency metrics from Java source code?

    For an assignment we have to extract some software metrics from the Hibernate project. We have to extract the afferent coupling and efferent coupling metrics (dependency fan-in, fan-out) from each revision of each package in Hibernate. Some tools were provided which are able to extract these metrics, such as ckjm and JDepend. Other tools I have checked were Sonar, javancss and AOP. There is also the Metrics Eclipse plugin which I didn't get to work either. What these tools have in common, as far as I can see, is that they all operate on bytecode (*.class files). This is a problem, because I have to build every revision from source in order to run, say, JDepend on it. Older revisions won't build because my development stack is too recent. What I would like to do is to do this kind of analysis on source files so that I don't have to build each revision. Is this possible? Or is there a good reason why all these tools only operate on bytecode?

  • Software development metrics and reporting

    I've had some interesting conversations recently about software development metrics, in particular how they can be used in a reasonably large organisation to help development teams work better. I know there have been Stack Overflow questions about which metrics are good to use - like this one, but my question is more about which metrics are useful to which stakeholders, and at what level of aggregation. As an example, my view is that code coverage is a useful metric in the following ways (and maybe others): For a team's own internal use when combined with other measurements. For facilitating/enabling/mentoring teams, where it might be instructive when considered on a team-by-team basis as a trend (e.g. if team A and B have coverage this month of 75 and 50, I'd be more concerned with team A than B if the previous month they'd had 80 and 40). For senior management when presented as an aggregated statistic across a number of teams or a whole department. But I don't think it's useful for senior management to see this on a team-by-team basis, as this encourages artifical attempts to bolster coverage with tests that merely exercise, rather than test, code. I'm in an organisation with a couple of levels in its management hierarchy, but where the vast majority of managers are technically minded and able (with many still getting their hands dirty). Some of the development teams are leading the way in driving towards agile development practices, but others lag, and there is now a serious mandate from the top for this to be the way the organisation works. A couple of us are starting a programme to encourage this. In this sort of an organisation, what sort of metrics do you think are useful, to whom, why, and at what level of aggregation? I don't want people to feel their performance is being assessed based on a metric that they can artificially influence; at the same time, the senior management are going to want some sort of evidence that progress is being made. What advice or caveats can you provide based on experience in your own organisations? EDIT We are definitely wanting to use metrics as a tool for organisational improvement not as a tool for individual performance measurement.

  • Windows system monitoring and profiling

    I have several dozen 64-bit Windows 2003 servers in a high performance environment with very bursty system utilization. I am looking for a tool (or tools) to monitor and analyze system performance (eg, CPU utilization, bandwidth, etc). This tool can either query servers from a central location (SNMP) or require installation of a component on each server. It should poll on a 1-second interval. It should be able to generate pretty graphs which show trends over time. As a nice-to-have, it should be able to send out emails or IMs when certain thresholds are exceeded. The tools I have investigated so far, including Solarwinds and PRTG, are not designed to poll this frequently. They seem to be designed for a ~30-second interval. Solarwinds wouldn't go lower than 3-sec, and PRTG chokes at 1-sec. They both default to 1-min. All three tools seem more focused on outage monitoring and reporting than metric collection. Given the bursty nature of our applications, such infrequent polling would result in a very inaccurate picture of performance. I am considering rolling my own solution using perfmon. This would be a lot of work, and seems like reinventing the wheel. Are there any tools out there that meet my needs?

  • Coherent access to mainframe files from Win32 application and IBM RDZ/Eclipse?

    I have a suite of tools for processing IBM COBOL source code; these tools are built as Win32 applications and talk to Windows (including network) files using traditional Windows file system calls (open, close, read, write) and work just fine, thank you. I'd like to integrate these with Eclipse; we understand how to get Eclipse to do UI for us we think. The problem is that Eclipse/RDZ users access mainframe files through some IBM magic. In How does RDZ access mainframe files I tried to understand how Eclipse accessed files on a mainframe. Apparantly Eclipse/RDZ has a secret filesystem access backdoor not available to normal mortals. At issue is how our tools, reading some Windows-accessible file (local disk file, NFS to mainframe, ...) can associate such files with the files that Eclipse can access or is using? Ideally we'd like UI-integrated versions of our tools take an Eclipse file-name string for a mainframe file, pass it to our Windows application to process, have the Windows application open/read/process the file, and return results associated with that file to the Eclipse UI. Is there a canonical file name path that would be used with mainframe NFS that would be equivalent to the name or access object the Eclipse RDZ used to access the same file? Are all operations doable internally by Eclipse, doable by the mainframe NFS [for instance, can NFS read/update an element in a partitioned data set? Can Eclipse RDZ? Does it matter?] Is the mainframe file access available to custom Java code running under Eclipse RDZ (e.g., equivalents of open/close/read/write based on filename/path/something?) If so, can somebody steer me towards documentation describing the access methods? Anybody else already solve this problem or have a good suggestion?

  • Best XML format for log events in terms of tool support for data mining and visualization?

    We want to be able to create log files from our Java application which is suited for later processing by tools to help investigate bugs and gather performance statistics. Currently we use the traditional "log stuff which may or may not be flattened into text form and appended to a log file", but this works the best for small amounts of information read by a human. After careful consideration the best bet has been to store the log events as XML snippets in text files (which is then treated like any other log file), and then download them to the machine with the appropriate tool for post processing. I'd like to use as widely supported an XML format as possible, and right now I am in the "research-then-make-decision" phase. I'd appreciate any help both in terms of XML format and tools and I'd be happy to write glue code to get what I need. What I've found so far: log4j XML format: Supported by chainsaw and Vigilog.     I have read many articles about the battle between natural versus surrogate primary keys. I agree in the use of surrogate keys to identify records of tables whose contents are created by the user. But in the case of supporting tables what should I use? For example, in a hypothetical table "orderStates". If you use a natural key would have the following data: TABLE ORDERSTATES {ID: "NEW", NAME: "New"} {ID: "MANAGEMENT" NAME: "Management"} {ID: "SHIPPED" NAME: "Shipped"} If I use a surrogate key would have the following data: TABLE ORDERSTATES {ID: 1 CODE: "NEW", NAME: "New"} {ID: 2 CODE: "MANAGEMENT" NAME: "Management"} {ID: 3 CODE: "SHIPPED" NAME: "Shipped"} Now let's take an example: a user enters a new order. In the case in which use natural keys, in the code I can write this: newOrder.StateOrderId = "NEW"; With the surrogate keys instead every time I have an additional step. stateOrderId_NEW = .... I retrieve the id corresponding to the recod code "NEW" newOrder.StateOrderId = stateOrderId_NEW; The same will happen every time I have to move the order in a new status. So, in this case, what are the reason to chose one key type vs the other one?

  • Why is Firefox so bloated? [closed]

    First off I am a developer who loves firebug and other development tools (and no Chrome firebug lite does not cut it) and am just utterly frustrated when I have been using Firefox lately. It is at the point where I use Chrome for absolutely everything but web development but am still frustrated that I had to switch where half a year ago or more Firefox was fine. Why can't there be a Firefox lite? One that is free from all the bloat that has been plaguing Firefox recently. Also if there are any tools or tips that I can free up my Firefox that would be great. I am using the newest version + as few add-ons as possible. EDIT: I have tried Chrome Developer Tools and I do like them...but I can't get passed the firebug lite extension of Chrome. Some of the developer tools are great but sometimes they just have too much information. I extensively use Firebug/myphp admin. Both of these work much much better in Firefox then Chrome. But I hate that it takes me so much longer to load and use everything.

  • How do I code and compile an Amiga application?

    I would like to program an application for the Amiga, just for fun! Please could someone post a step by step howto based on the following? Exactly what programming tools I should use, are there any already installed? Am I limited to plain text editors, or are there IDEs and debugging tools available? If no tools are already installed, how can this done? Are there free ones? I'd like to learn a traditional Amiga language, could you reccomend one? What should I use to compile the language you suggest? Please could you suggest tools I may use to debug the suggested language? Are there any libraries I should be aware of, such as GUI libraries? Some things to note... I'm running Workbench 3.1 from within the WinUAE emulator. From Workbench, I can access files from my Windows hard drive. I'd like to code and compile it from Workbench if possible. I'm running WinUAE in A1200 mode, not sure if that matters. There's an application already installed called MEmacs. I know C++ and C# very well, maybe there's a similar Amiga language. I'm aware that you can code with C and C++, but I want to learn a new language.     I'm having problems with an MBean that takes a Map<String, Object> as a parameter. The same thing happens for extended classes (for example declare HashMap, pass in LinkedHashMap). Does this mean it's impossible to use an interface for such methods? At the moment I'm getting around it by changing the method signature to accept a HashMap, but it seems odd that I wouldn't be able to use interfaces (or extended classes) in my MBeans.   • Security Trimmed Cross Site Collection Navigation

    Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). This article will serve as documentation of a fully functional codeplex project that I just created. This project will give you a WebPart that will give you security trimmed navigation across site collections. The first question is, why create such a project? In every single SharePoint project you will do, one question you will always be faced with is, what should the boundaries of sites be, and what should the boundaries of site collections be? There is no good or bad answer to this, because it really really depends on your needs. There are some factors in play here. Site Collections will allow you to scale, as a Site collection is the smallest entity you can put inside a content database Site collections will allow you to offer different levels of SLAs, because you put a site collection on a separate content database, and put that database on a separate server. Site collections are a security boundary – and they can be moved around at will without affecting other site collections. Site collections are also a branding boundary. They are also a feature deployment boundary, so you can have two site collections on the same web application with completely different nature of services. But site collections break navigation, i.e. a site collection at “/”, and a site collection at “/sites/mySiteCollection”, are completely independent of each other. If you have access to both, the navigation of / won’t show you a link to /sites/mySiteCollection. Some people refer to this as a huge issue in SharePoint. Luckily, some workarounds exist. A long time ago, I had blogged about “Implementing Consistent Navigation across Site Collections”. That approach was a no-code solution, it worked – it gave you a consistent navigation across site collections. But, it didn’t work in a security trimmed fashion! i.e., if I don’t have access to Site Collection ‘X’, it would still show me a link to ‘X’. Well this project gets around that issue. Simply deploy this project, and it’ll give you a WebPart. You can use that WebPart as either a webpart or as a server control dropped via SharePoint designer, and it will give you Security Trimmed Cross Site Collection Navigation. The code has been written for SP2010, but it will work in SP2007 with the help of http://spwcfsupport.codeplex.com . What do I need to do to make it work? I’m glad you asked! Simple! Deploy the .wsp (which you can download here). This will give you a site collection feature called “Winsmarts Cross Site Collection Navigation” as shown below. Go ahead and activate it, and this will give you a WebPart called “Winsmarts Navigation Web Part” as shown below: Just drop this WebPart on your page, and it will show you all site collections that the currently logged in user has access to. Really it’s that easy! This is shown as below - In the above example, I have two site collections that I created at /sites/SiteCollection1 and /sites/SiteCollection2. The navigation shows the titles. You see some extraneous crap as well, you might want to clean that – I’ll talk about that in a minute. What? You’re running into problems? If the problem you’re running into is that you are prompted to login three times, and then it shows a blank webpart that says “Loading your applications ..” and then craps out!, then most probably you’re using a different authentication scheme. Behind the scenes I use a custom WCF service to perform this job. OOTB, I’ve set it to work with NTLM, but if you need to make it work alternate authentications such as forms based auth, or client side certs, you will need to edit the %14%\ISAPI\Winsmarts.CrossSCNav\web.config file, specifically, this section - 1: <bindings> 2: <webHttpBinding> 3: <binding name="customWebHttpBinding"> 4: <security mode="TransportCredentialOnly"> 5: <transport clientCredentialType="Ntlm"/> 6: </security> 7: </binding> 8: </webHttpBinding> 9: </bindings> For Kerberos, change the “clientCredentialType” to “Windows” For Forms auth, remove that transport line For client certs – well that’s a bit more involved, but it’s just web.config changes – hit a good book on WCF or hire me for a billion trillion $. But fair warning, I might be too busy to help immediately. If you’re running into a different problem, please leave a comment below, but the code is pretty rock solid, so .. hmm .. check what you’re doing! BTW, I don’t  make any guarantee/warranty on this – if this code makes you sterile, unpopular, bad hairstyle, anything else, that is your problem! But, there are some known issues - I wrote this as a concept – you can easily extend it to be more flexible. Example, hierarchical nav, or, horizontal nav, jazzy effects with jquery or silverlight– all those are possible very very easily. This webpart is not smart enough to co-exist with another instance of itself on the same page. I can easily extend it to do so, which I will do in my spare(!?) time! Okay good! But that’s not all! As you can see, just dropping the WebPart may show you many extraneous site collections, or maybe you want to restrict which site collections are shown, or exclude a certain site collection to be shown from the navigation. To support that, I created a property on the WebPart called “UrlMatchPattern”, which is a regex expression you specify to trim the results :). So, just edit the WebPart, and specify a string property of “http://sp2010/sites/” as shown below. Note that you can put in whatever regex expression you want! So go crazy, I don’t care! Currently, our WinForms application uses lots of tabs, which we put use to display different User Control objects. All of these controls implement a specific Interface so we can make specific calls to them and not worry about what the actual control is (things like Save, Close, Clear, etc.) Would it be possible to create a WPF project that contains XAML User Controls that implement the same Interface and display those User Controls in the WinFroms project within a tab?
