• is there a way to generate pdf containing non-ascii symbols with pisa from django template?

  Hi. i'm trying to generate a pdf from template using this snippet: def write_pdf(template_src, context_dict): template = get_template(template_src) context = Context(context_dict) html = template.render(context) result = StringIO.StringIO() pdf = pisa.pisaDocument(StringIO.StringIO(html.encode("UTF-8")), result) if not pdf.err: return http.HttpResponse(result.getvalue(), mimetype='application/pdf') except Exception('PDF error') but all non-latin symbols are not showing correctly, the template and view are saved using utf-8 encoding. i've tried saving view as ANSI and then to user unicode(html,"UTF-8"), but it throws TypeError. Also i thought that maybe it's because the default fonts somehow do not support utf-8 so according to pisa documentation i tried to set fontface in template body in style section. that still gave no results. Does any one have some ideas how to solve this issue?

  Well, I'm trying to create a newsletter, that will send emails to users in a database. The newsletter itself would draw "events" and other activities from a database. Whats the best way to take that list, and put them in an email? I was thinking about putting them into an html page, then sending an html email, but not all emails support html(like school email).   I want to be able to support multiple versions of Java ME without having to have multiple builds. I already know how to detect the profile/configuration/supported JSRs. My problem is that knowing whether the JSR is supported at run time doesn't allow me to use all the features. For if I call a function added in a later version anywhere in the code - even a location that will never be run, then this will be a compilation error due to static typing. Is there any way round this?

  we use an application that has an "export to excel" feature that doesn't work on PC's that done have outlook express installed. i know, you're thinking "WTF does outlook express have to do with excel files?" i asked the same thing, and here's what i found: the file being generated is actually one of those Microsoft Single File Web Pages (.mht) and NOT an excel file you need to have outlook express installed to actually view a .mht file. i've explained to their support people that just because you can slap a .xls on a file and excel will open it does not mean its an excel file, and does not mean that this is the right way to do it. how would you explain that this is not proper?

• How to keep an old VB6 application running in Windows Vista and Windows 7?

  I have an old VB6 app which I'm still trying to support. A few users have reported weird crashes when running the app in Vista or Windows 7. The log files don't show anything after one of these crashes, but the customers report that the error message said "OLE something ...", if they saw anything at all. I've never been able to reproduce these crashes while running the program on my own Vista or Windows 7 boxes, so I have essentially no information on what the problem is. My suspicion is that it's a problem with their versions of one or more of the umpteen billion DLLs that a VB6 application is dependent on. The app also uses lame_enc.dll, which introduces a few more dependencies. I'm guessing this is a common problem with VB6 apps (although it's possible that I just sucked as a programmer 10 years ago). Is there some magical installer/updater out there that makes sure all the VB6 dependencies are what they need to be for a VB6 app to function properly?

  Objective: In support of a Windows Service that may have multiple instances on a single machine, use a Setup Project to create an MSI capable of: Receiving user input for Service Name Installing service Serializing Service Name from 1 (so that the proper name can be used in logging and uninstall) My initial hope was to set Service Name in App.config (and then retrieve it during uninstall upon instantiation of the ServiceInstaller. This seems to have been naive, because it is not accessible during the install. If MyInstaller extends Installer, it can call base.Install(); however, my attempts to write to app.config (within MyInstaller.Install() and after base.Install()) are inneffective. So while the service can be installed with a custom Service Name, that name is not serialized and the installer is most displeased upon uninstall. How should this be done?

  Hi, Is there a way to provide fallback URL when HTTP redirect times out? What I'm trying to achieve is that when I hit the original url, I would respond with HTTP redirect (300, 307?) giving the browser new URL and the fallback URL in case the new URL times out? I was also considering doing this client side but it just does not seem to be very effective (in terms of speed, client support). What I would do is probably have a tiny 1x1px image on each server, try loading it and then check with javascript which server is up and redirect there. Any other ideas? Thanks

• Work-around for PHP5's PDO rowCount MySQL issue

  I've recently started work on a new project using PHP5 and want to use their PDO classes for it. The problem is that the MySQL PDO Driver doesn't support rowCount() so there's no way to run a query and then get the number of affected rows, or rows returned, which is a pretty big issue as far as I'm concerned. I was wondering if anyone else has dealt with this before and what you've done to work around it. Having to do a fetch() or fetchAll() to check if any rows were affected or returned seems like a hack to me, I'd rather just do $stmt-numRows() or something similar.

  I use TiddlyWiki for work-notes. I already have pretty large wiki, but now I want to add math-support. As far as I understand what is written here, all I would have to do to use ASCIIMathML in my wiki would be including the script ASCIIMathML.js. Doesn't work (no effect at all). Then I found this plugin for TiddlyWiki, but when I import it to my wiki, it gives me an error in one of the regexp strings. When I download that wiki directly, ASCIIMath does not work anymore, even though I have the script in the same directory. Does anyone have a solution available, how I can add ASCIIMath to my existing TiddlyWiki?

  When you mouseenter .li_group class it does a slide down effect on 1 single <li> tag, everything goes smoothly, but during the delay if you take your mouse off and on .li_group it "queues" the effect and slides the li down, delay, slides it down again etc etc... • CSS3PIE: Internet Explorer 6 doesn't download PIE.htc

  I'm using the very impressive CSS3PIE (http://css3pie.com) library to add support for CSS3 styles in IE6-8. It works fine in versions 7 and 8 and took a lot of pain out of the process. However, in IE6 no CSS3 styles are shown at all. In fact, looking at the server logs, I can see that IE6 doesn't even download the PIE.htc file, which is necessary for the magic to work. The content type for the file is set correctly as text/x-component, it's referenced by absolute URL, and works fine in IE7 and 8. I'm using Compass (www.compass-style.org) and the PIE helper which makes the CSS look like this: #shopping_cart { behavior: url("/media/static/css/PIE.htc"); position: relative; border-radius: 10px; } I can't figure out what the problem is.   I recently heard all about avr-gcc and avr-lib support on Linux that can be used for developing code for Atmel AVR micro-controller (ATmega48/88/168, ATmega16/32). I also understand that Arduino also uses Atmel's AVR micro-controller (I am not sure which one). Now different vendors have designed their own product (using Atmel AVR uc) where code is to be developed using avr-gcc i.e. on Linux platform. In the same regards Arduino's Windows IDE is much simpler and easy to code with. I am confused as to which platform is more promising - what are the benefits of learning avr-gcc? Which is the better option to program using the same? What type of application can we develop using avr-gcc compiler?

• Using an XML Catalog with a Java library that uses JAXP internally

  I'm using the Apache web service xml rpc library to make requests to an rpc service. Somewhere in that process is a xml document with a DTD reference to http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd, which the library attempts to download when parsing the XML. That download fails with a 503 status code because the w3c is blocking repeated downloads of this largely static document from Java clients. The solution is XML Catalogs to locally cache the DTD. However, while I can find examples of setting an EntityHandler on a JAXP SAXParser instance directly to enable catalog parser support, I don't actually have access to the underlying parser here. It's just being used by the xml rpc library. Is there any way I can set a global property or something that will tell JAXP to use XML catalogs?

• What is a good Visio Enterprise Architect replacement?

  I've been using Visio 2002/2003 Enterprise Architect to do my database schema design visually and then forward-generate the DDL to create the database. I wanted to switch to Visio 2007, but while it does have database diagramming support, it doesn't have the ability to generate DDL. Bummer. I am really disappointed because it seems like Microsoft has completely abandoned this feature. You can't do it in Visual Studio (that I've found). You can sorta do it with SQL Server Management Studio if you insert database diagrams into your database, but any edits to the schema immediately take effect. Has anyone found a good program to do this? I'm hoping to find one that is free and can generate DDL/SQL for SQL Server.

• How to synchronize SQL Server 2008 database with SQL Server 2005 database?

  I am using VS 2008 Team Suite and SQL Server 2008 in my development environment. I am deploying to a shared-host website with shared-host SQL Server 2005. I want to push changes from my development environment to my production host. I tried using Data | Schema Compare... and it reports to me that it does not support SQL Server 2008. What do people use for this (Besides Red-Gate tools - I use those at my day job, and they rock...this is a volunteer thing for my son's school)? I am looking for something very inexpensive if not free.

• Is wordpress a good platform for webapp development?

  I am planning a webapp to control bank paying orders. In a quick review, the user goes online and creates a payment order. This order goes to other people that pays it and register the payment on the system. The system keeps track of all the payments, keeping the account balance up-to-date. The system needs a login system, bank integration, and to support at some point thousands of clients. We can find articles on the web about the benefits of using wordpress platform to build webapps. However, I could not find discussion with counterarguments to user wordpress. As the platform the most important choice in webapp project, I would to know more about the pitfalls and harms for choosing wordpress. The question is: What are the benefits and harms for choosing wordpress as a development platform for a webapp that need to be integrated with other system (backend systems) and to handle thousands of users (does it scale up?)?

• cakePHP - ACL tutorial & SQL Error: 1104

  Greetings! I run into a problem/bug in production environment with SQL Error: 1104 when deploying a project secured with the ACL tutorial. The full error: SQL Error: 1104: The SELECT would examine more than MAX_JOIN_SIZE rows; check your WHERE and use SET SQL_BIG_SELECTS=1 or SET SQL_MAX_JOIN_SIZE=# if the SELECT is okay [CORE/cake/libs/model/datasources/dbo_source.php, line 666] I've build a small site, worked through the ACL tutorial from the official cake book and locally everything is spiffy. dev. setup consists of: XAMPP: myslq 5.1.33, php 5.3 cakePHP 1.2.7 prod. setup: mysql 5.0.33 php 5.2.2 One of the differences I noticed with mysql setup between local and production servers, is that SQL_BIG_SELECTS is disabled on the production server ( and I don't have privileges to change that, posted a support ticked, didn't hear anything yet) Is there anything I can do about this from my end? Thanks in advance.
