• How upload files to azure in background with Delphi and OmniThread?

  I have tried to upload +100 files to azure with Delphi. However, the calls block the main thread, so I want to do this with a async call or with a background thread. • Why is it a bad practice to call System.gc?

  After answering to a question about how to force-free objects in Java (the guy was clearing a 1.5GB HashMap) with System.gc(), I've been told it's a bad practice to call System.gc() manually, but the comments seemed mitigated about it. So much that no one dared to upvote it, nor downvote it. I've been told there it's a bad practice, but then I've also been told garbage collector runs don't systematically stop the world anymore, and that it could also be only seen as a hint, so I'm kind of at loss. I do understand that usually the JVM knows better than you when it needs to reclaim memory. I also understand that worrying about a few kilobytes of data is silly. And I also understand that even megabytes of data isn't what it was a few years back. But still, 1.5 gigabyte? And you know there's like 1.5 GB of data hanging around in memory; it's not like it's a shot in the dark. Is System.gc() systematically bad, or is there some point at which it becomes okay? So the question is actually double: Why is it or not a bad practice to call System.gc()? Is it really a hint under certain implementations, or is it always a full collection cycle? Are there really garbage collector implementations that can do their work without stopping the world? Please shed some light over the various assertions people have made. Where's the threshold? Is it never a good idea to call System.gc(), or are there times when it's acceptable? If any, what are those times?

• Trouble with an depreciated constrictor visual basic visual studio 2010

  My goal is to print labels with barcodes and a date stamp from an entry to a zebra TLP 2844 when the user clicks the ok button/hits enter. i found what i think might be the code for this from zebras site and have been integrating it into my program but part of it is depreciated and i cant quite figure out how to update it. below is what i have so far.   This is just a question to help me understand CSS rendering better. Lets say we have a million lines of this. <div class="first"> <div class="second"> <span class="third">Hello World</span> </div> </div> Which would be the fastest way to change the font of Hello World to red? .third { color: red; } div.third { color: red; } div.second div.third { color: red; } div.first div.second div.third { color: red; } Also, what if there was at tag in the middle that had a unique id of "foo". Which one of the CSS methods above would be the fastest. I know why these methods are used etc, im just trying to grasp better the rendering technique of the browsers and i have no idea how to make a test that times it. UPDATE: Nice answer Gumbo. From the looks of it then it would be quicker in a regular site to do the full definition of a tag. Since it finds the parents and narrows the search for every parent found. That could be bad in the sense you'd have a pretty large CSS file though.

• Objective-C Simple Inheritance and OO Principles

  I have a subclass SubClass that inherits from baseclass BaseClass. BaseClass has an initializer, like so: -(id)init { self = [super init]; if(self) { [self commonInit]; } return self; } -(void)commonInit { self.goodStuff = [[NSMutableArray alloc]init]; } SubClass does its initializer, like so: -(id)init { self = [super init]; if(self) { [self commonInit]; } return self; } -(void)commonInit { self.extraGoodStuff = [[NSMutableArray alloc]init]; } Now, I've *never taken a proper Objective-C course, but I'm a programmer more from the Electrical Engineering side, so I make do. I've developed server-side applications mostly in Java though, so I may be seeing the OO world through Java principles. When SubClass is initialized, it calls the BaseClass init and my expectation would be — because inheritance to me implies that characteristics of a BaseClass pass through to SubClass — that the commonInit method in BaseClass would be called during BaseClass init. It is not. I can *sorta understand maybe-possibly-stretch-my-imagination why it wouldn't be. But, then — why wouldn't it be based on the principles of OOP? What does "self" represent if not the instance of the class of the running code? Okay, so — I'm not going to argue that what a well-developed edition of Objective-C is doing is wrong. So, then — what is the pattern I should be using in this case? I want SubClass to have two main bits — the goodStuff that BaseClass has as well as the extraGoodStuff that it deserves as well. Clearly, I've been using the wrong pattern in this type of situation. Am I meant to expose commonInit (which makes me wonder about encapsulation principles — why expose something that, in the Java world at least, would be considered "protected" and something that should only ever be called once for each instance)? I've run into a similar problem in the recent past and tried to muddle through it, but now — I'm really wondering if I've got my principles and concepts all straight in my head. Little help, please.

  I am creating a new chart for each row of data in an Excel spreadsheet. I have the Vbasic working properly, but I want to change the position of the chart on the sheet that is added for each row. Below is my code, what do I need to do to change the position of the chart on the page automatically? Ideally, I would like it to be in the upper left hand corner of each sheet. • Should this even be a has_many :through association?

  A Post belongs_to a User, and a User has_many Posts. A Post also belongs_to a Topic, and a Topic has_many Posts. class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :posts end class Topic < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :posts end class Post < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :topic end Well, that's pretty simple and very easy to set up, but when I display a Topic, I not only want all of the Posts for that Topic, but also the user_name and the user_photo of the User that made that Post. However, those attributes are stored in the User model and not tied to the Topic. So how would I go about setting that up? Maybe it can already be called since the Post model has two foreign keys, one for the User and one for the Topic? Or, maybe this is some sort of "one-way" has_many through assiociation. Like the Post would be the join model, and a Topic would has_many :users, :through = :posts. But the reverse of this is not true. Like a User does NOT has_many :topics. So would this even need to be has_many :though association? I guess I'm just a little confused on what the controller would look like to call both the Post and the User of that Post for a give Topic. Edit: Seriously, thank you to all that weighed in. I chose tal's answer because I used his code for my controller; however, I could have just as easily chosen either j.'s or tim's instead. Thank you both as well. This was so damn simple to implement, and I think today marks the day that I'm beginning to fall in love with rails.

• Transaction Isolation Level of Serializable not working for me

  I have a project to do in Visual Basic. My problem is that the outcome is always wrong (ex. instead of 2011 it gives 2000). And i cannot set as Desired unit the Inch(1) or feet(3), it gives the Infinity error. And if i put as Original and Desired unit the inch(1), the outcome is "Not a Number". • How does it affect me as a developer/engineer/company that Android is open source

  I understand the concept of open source, but I just realized now that I understand it from only one view: when I open source my own code. I don't really understand what benefit I'm getting from receiving the same thing. As a regular developer (like the majority of us here), I did not spend the past 4 years of my life working on "developing" the android. So even though I'm a developer, I'm at the end of the developers chain when it comes to the Android (like most of us). I'm really more of an end user. So my interest in Android isn't really to dedicate all my time to it or work on improving its kernel or anything overly ambitious. So with that clear, as a developer considering developing for the Android, how does it really benefit me that it's open source? What's the added benefit that I'm missing? Can other developers share some concrete ways that its open source status actually affects us as developers. Basically I'm trying to understand how we, at this developer level, can make sense of the fact that it's open source, or is its open source status just hype for us at our end developer level. Thanks

And now the worst part - I need the backgrounds to disappear on mouseleave. I need it to work with any HTML mess possible. The above is just an example and structure of the documents will differ. [tip. Processing the whole html before binding hover and putting some spans etc. is ok as long as it doesn't change the looks of the output document]

  Is there any alternate way to create stored procedure without putting all query in one long string if criteria of WWHERE clause can be different. Suppose I have Orders table I want to create stored procedure on this table and there are three column on which I wnat to filter records. 1- CustomerId, 2- SupplierId, 3- ProductId. If user only give CustomerId in search criteria then query should be like following SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE Orders.CustomerId = @customerId And if user only give ProductId in search criteria then query should be like following SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE Orders.ProductId = @productId And if user only all three CustomerId, ProductId, and SupplierId is given then all three Ids will be used in WHERE to filter. There is also chance that user don't want to filter record then query should be like following SELCT * FROM Orders Whenever I have to create this kind of procedure I put all this in string and use IF conditions to check if arguments (@customeId or @supplierId etc) has values. • Need to search email body for regex using VBA

  I am trying to write a script that I can run from a rule withing outlook. The goal of this script is to search the email body for a regex pattern, \d{8}-\d{3}\(E\d\) in this case. I want to take that pattern and see if a folder with the name of the match exists and if not create one. I am not super familiar with VBA as I write mostly in python. I have copied and pasted the following bit of code together but at this time I am unable to get the MsgBox to appear when I send an email with 20120812-001(E3) in the body.   Hello, I have been trying to return a collection from a property within a class to a routine in a normal module. The issue I am experiencing is that the collection is getting populated correctly within the property in the class (FetchAll) but when I pass the collection back to the module (Test) all the entries are populated with the last item in the list. • Perl, share package variable without Export

  I'm creating a group of Perl scripts, and I would like to have one package store a group of constants. I don't want to export them using Exporter because there will be quite a few and I don't want to pollute the namespace. Since there will be so many, I don't want to require the user to be forced to manually specify which they will be using. I think the best way to just use the packagename::var syntax, however it doesn't seem to be working as I expect it to. • Why does std::cout convert volatile pointers to bool?

  If you try to cout a volatile pointer, even a volatile char pointer where you would normally expect cout to print the string, you will instead simply get '1' (assuming the pointer is not null I think). I assume output stream operator<< is template specialized for volatile pointers, but my question is, why? What use case motivates this behavior?
