• Project Codenames - Yea or Nay?

  Where I work, most of our projects have (or at least attempt) descriptive, useful names. However we have a few with names that make no sense: I found that an assembly named WiFi which actually has nothing whatsoever to do with wi-fi, but is a codename. When I asked why, I was told that it's to protect company secrets incase some intern has few too many at the pub on Friday and starts chatting about the brand new 'WiFi' project he's been working on. Its clear that some people find enjoyment in finding silly / amusing codenames for their projects (like in this question). My question is: is it really a good idea to use codenames for your projects or are you better off spending the time to decide upon a descriptive name? My opinion is that in the long-run its better to give your projects relevant names. My reasoning is that if you can't think of a decent name, perhaps you don't really know the requirements well enough. I think there are better ways to 'protect company secrets' and I find it quite confusing when the name does not correlate at all with the content. It's just common sense, surely?! So do you use codenames and what the your reasons for or against this seemingly common, yet annoying (to me at least) practice?

• How to learn the math behind the code?

  I am a 12 year old who has recently gotten into programming. (Although I know that the number of books you have read does not determine your programming competency or ability, just to paint a "map" of where I am in terms of the content I know...) I've finished the books: Python 3 For Absolute Beginners Pro Python Python Standard Library by Example Beautiful Code Agile Web Development With Rails and am about halfway into Programming Ruby. I have written many small programs (One that finds which files have been updated and deleted in a directory, one that compares multiple players' fantasy baseball value, and some text based games, and many more). Obviously, as I'm not some sort of child prodigy, I can't take a formal Computer Science course until high school. I really want to learn computer science to increase my knowledge about the code, and the how the code runs. I've really become interested in the math part after reading the source code for Python's random module. Is there a place where I can learn CS, or programming math online for free, at a level that would be at least partially understandable to a person my age?

  My Investigation of WCF internals have set the right stage to revisit Professional WCF 4 by Pablo Cibraro, Kurt Claeys, Fabio Cozzolino and Johann Grabner. In this book, the authors dive deep into all aspects of the WCF API in a reading targeted towards intermediate and advanced developers. Book quality so far as presentation, code completeness, content clarity and organization was superb. The authors have taken a hands-on approach to thoroughly covering the WCF 4.0 API with three chapters totaling 100+ pages completely dedicated to business cases with downloadable source code readily available. Chapter 1 outlines SOA best-practice considerations. Next three chapters take a top-down approach to the WCF API covering service and data contracts, bindings, clients, instancing and Workflow Services followed by another carefully-thought three chapters covering the security options available via the WCF API. In conclusion, Professional WCF 4.0 provides a thorough coverage of the WCF API and is a recommended read for anybody looking to reinforce their understanding of the various features available in the WCF framework. • Using the right folder for the right job. Article link, please?

  There are specific folders designed for specific tasks. /var/www holds your web sites, /usr/bin contains files to run your applications...yet I still find myself putting nearly all of my work in ~. Is it possible to overuse my home directory? Will it come back to haunt me? Anyone have a good link to an article of best practices for organizing your files so that they are placed in their "correct" place? Is there even such a thing in Linux? I am referring specifically to user-generated content. I do not compile applications from source, I use apt-get for those tasks. This article has a great introduction to what I'm looking for. Table 3-2, "Subdirectories of the root directory" is the sort of thing I'm looking for, but with more details/examples.

• excel vba to CRUD drupal nodes

  We need to periodically migrate Excel reports data into Drupal nodes. We looked at replicating some Excel functionality in Drupal with slickgrid, but it wasn't up to snuff. The Excel reports people don't want to double-enter their data, but their data is important to be in this Drupal site. They have hundreds of Excel reports, and update a row in each weekly. We want a button at the row end to fire a VBA macro that submits the data to Drupal, where a new node is created from the info submitted. (Yes, we are experienced with both Drupal and VBA; all users and the site are behind our firewall.) We need the new node's nid or URL returned so we can then create a link in Excel directly to that node Site is D6, using Services 3.x module. I tried the REST server module, but we can't get it to retrieve data without session authentication on, which we can't do from Excel. (unless you can?) I also noticed the 'data' it was returning via browser url was 14 or 20 nodes' info, not the one nid requested (Example: http://mysite.com/services/rest/report/node/30161) When I attempt to create a simple node like this from VBA: Dim MyURL as String MyURL = "http://mysite.com/services/rest/report/node?node[type]=test&node[title]=testing123&node[field_test_one][0][value]=123" Set objHTTP = CreateObject("MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP") With objHTTP .Open "POST", MyURL, False .setRequestHeader "Content-Type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" .send (MyURL) End With I get HTTP Status: Unauthorized: Access denied for user 0 "anonymous" and HTTP Response: null Everything I search for has examples in php or java, nothing in VBA. Also tried switching to using an XMLRPC server but that's even more confusing. We would like json (used application/json, set formatter accordingly in REST server settings), but will use anything that works. Ideas? Thanks in advance!

• New way of integrating Openfeint in Cocos2d-x 0.12.0

  I am trying to implement OpenFeint for Android in my cocos2d-x project. My approach so far has been creating a button that calls a static java method in class Bridge using jnihelper functions (jnihelper only accepts statics). Bridge has one singleton attribute of type OFAndroid, that is the class dynamically calling the Openfeint Api methods, and every method in the bridge just forwards it to the OFAndroid object. What I am trying to do now is to initialize the openfeint libraries in the main java class that is the one calling the static C++ libraries. My problem right now is that the initializing function void com.openfeint.api.OpenFeint.initialize(Context ctx, OpenFeintSettings settings, OpenFeintDelegate delegate) is not accepting the context parameter that I am giving him, which is a "this" reference to the main class. Main class extends from Cocos2dxActivity but I don't have any other that extends from Application. Any suggestions on fixing it or how to improve the architecture? EDIT: I am trying a new solution. Make the bridge class into an Application child, is called from Main object, initializes OpenFeint when created and it can call the OpenFeint functions instead of needing an additional class. • ATI Catalyst driver 12.8 is not using hardware acceleration on Precise

  I've been using Ubuntu and ATI Catalyst for years. On my clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 I've noticed that Catalyst 12.6 and then 12.8 are not actually using my HD5750 GPU for hardware acceleration - high CPU usage, zero GPU load. Everything installed correctly with no hassles, fglrxinfo and vainfo are correct as per this HowTo for Precise. I have an Ubuntu 10.04 with Catalyst 12.6 installation on the same hardware which does use the GPU - low CPU usage, high GPU load when transcodeing video files or playing video content. The VA-API drivers are not installed on the 10.04 build. They are not mentioned in this HowTo for Lucid. fgl_glxgears frame rates on Precise are a fifth of the rates on Lucid. • PHP rand function (or not so rand)

  I was testing PHP rand function to write on a image. Of course the output shows that it's not so random. The code I used: <?php header('Content-Type: image/png'); $lenght = 512; $im = imagecreatetruecolor($lenght, $lenght); $blue = imagecolorallocate($im, 0, 255, 255); for ($y = 0; $y < $lenght; $y++) { for ($x = 0; $x < $lenght; $x++) { if (rand(0,1) == 0) { imagesetpixel($im, $x, $y, $blue); } } } imagepng($im); imagedestroy($im); ?> My question is, if I use image width/lenght (variable $lenght in this example) number like 512, 256 or 1024, it is very clear that it's not so random. When I change the variable to 513 for an example, it is so much harder for human eye to detect it. Why is that? What is so special about these numbers? 512: 513: Edit: I'm running xampp on Windows to test it.

  from Sharat Chander, Director - Java Technology Outreach: These past 24+ months have proved momentous for Oracle's stewardship of Java.  A little over 2 years ago when Oracle completed its acquisition of Sun, a lot of community speculation arose regarding Oracle's Java commitment.  Whether the fears and concerns were legitimate or not, the only way to emphatically demonstrate Oracle's seriousness with moving Java forward was through positive action.  In 2010, Oracle committed to putting Java back on schedule whereby large gaps between release trains would be a thing of the past.  And in 2011, that promise came true.  With the 2011 summer release of JDK 7, the Java ecosystem now had a version brought up to date.  And then in the fall of 2011, JavaFX 2.0 righted the JavaFX ship making rich internet applications a reality. Similar progress between Oracle and the Java community continues to blossom.  New-found relationship investments between Oracle and Java User Groups are taking root.  Greater participation and content execution by the Java community in JavaOne is steadily increasing.  The road ahead is lit with bright lights and opportunities. And now there's more good news to share.  As of April 2nd, two recognized JavaFX technology luminaries and "rock stars" speakers from the Java community are joining Oracle on a new journey.   Have you observed an ORA-0600 or ORA-07445 reported in your alert log? The ORA-600 error is the generic internal error number for Oracle program exceptions. It indicates that a process has encountered a low-level, unexpected condition. The ORA-600 error statement includes a list of arguments in square brackets: ORA 600 "internal error code, arguments: [%s], [%s],[%s], [%s], [%s]" The first argument is the internal message number or character string. This argument and the database version number are critical in identifying the root cause and the potential impact to your system.  The remaining arguments in the ORA-600 error text are used to supply further information (e.g. values of internal variables etc).   Looking for the best way to diagnose?   Social Reader Application has made the process of sharing in Facebook easy but it looks like whatever we read is being displayed in our Facebook’s page. How to avoid this sharing? In the recent days, everyone’s Facebook Page is being flooded with various news from all the Social Reader Applications we have enabled. Even though this is a good idea to share the current news to everyone, it still seems to have taken away our privacy of what content we actually read. To avoid displaying the news on our Facebook page: 1. If you want the feeds to be displayed in your page but not to be shown to public or friends, just select from the options that are listed when you give permission for the Social Reader when you first read a feed. 2. Select Account Settings from the drop down menu on the top right corner of your FB page. Select Apps Tab which is available in the left side of the page. Here you can change the App Settings or completely delete the App. 3. You can also block Social Reader and other applications’ feeds that are read by your friends. In the right corner of the feed, click the drop-down icon and select “Hide all by ‘Application’” option. By selecting this, you would not be able to see any feeds from your friends too. 4. If you are intrigued by the feeds, you can just copy the title in your search engine and then read directly from their sites. This will not list the feed in your Facebook page.

  Microsoft has released the Silverlight 4 Training Kit that steps you through the process of constructing Silverlight 4 business applications. “The Silverlight 4 Training Course includes a whitepaper explaining all of the new Silverlight 4 features, several hands-on-labs that explain the features, and a 8 unit course for building business applications with Silverlight 4. The business applications course includes 8 modules with extensive hands on labs as well as 25 accompanying videos that walk you through key aspects of building a business application with Silverlight. Key aspects in this course are working with numerous sandboxed and elevated out of browser features, the new RichTextBox control, implicit styling, webcam, drag and drop, multi touch, validation, authentication, MEF, WCF RIA Services, right mouse click, and much more!” What I think is pretty cool is that there are two ways to access this content, online and offline. Obviously the online version is great when you’re sitting at your desk and you’re connected to the web. What about when you don’t have a connection like when you’re located where you won’t eat green eggs & ham, like on a train or on plane perhaps? :-) You can download the offline version and hope that Sam I Am won’t be to distracting while you try to watch the videos or work your way through the labs. :-) Have a day. :-|

The Path from a Social Brand to a Social Business Brian Solis Originally posted May 2, 2012 I’ve been a long-time supporter of MediaTemple’s (MT)Residence program along with Gary Vaynerchuk, Neil Patel, and many others whom I respect. I wanted to share my “7 questions to answer to become a social business” with you here.. Social Media is pervasive and is becoming the new normal in corporate marketing. Brands who get this right are starting to build their own media networks rich with customer connections numbering in the millions. Right now, Coca-Cola has over 34 million fans on Facebook, but they’re hardly alone. Disney follows just behind with 29 million fans, Starbucks boasts 25 million, and Oreo, Red Bull, and Converse play host to over 20 million fans. If we were to look at other networks such as Twitter and Youtube, we would see a recurring theme. People are connecting en masse with the businesses they support and new media represents the ability to cultivate consumer relationships in ways not possible with traditional earned or paid media. Sounds great right? This might sound abrupt, but the truth is that we’re hardly realizing the potential of what lies before us. Everything begins with understanding not just how other brands are marketing themselves in social media, but also seeing what they’re not doing and envisioning what’s possible. We’re already approaching the first of many crossroads that new media will present. Do we take the path of a social brand or that of a social business? What’s the difference? A social brand is just that, a business that is remodeling or retrofitting its existing marketing practices to new media. A social business is something altogether different as it embraces introspection and extrospection to reevaluate internal and external processes, systems, and opportunities to transform into a living, breathing entity that adapts to market conditions and opportunities. It’s a tough decision to make right now especially at a time when all we read about is how much success many businesses are finding without having to answer this very question. With all of the newfound success in social networks, the truth is that we’re only just beginning to learn what’s possible and that’s where you come in. When compared to the investment in time and resources across the board, social media represents only a small part of the mix. But with your help, that’s all about to change. The CMO Survey, an organization that disseminates the opinions of top marketers in order to predict the future of markets, recently published a report that gave credence to the fact that social media is taking off. One of the most profound takeaways from the report was this gem; “The “like button” [in Facebook] packs more customer-acquisition punch than other demand-generating activities.” With insights like this, it’s easy to see why the race to social is becoming heated. The report also highlighted exactly where social fits in the marketing mix today and as you can see, despite all of the hype, it’s not a dominant focus yet. As of August 2011, the percentage of overall marketing budgets dedicated to social media hovered at around 7%. However, in 2012 the investment in social media will climb to 10%. And, in five years, social media is expected to represent almost 18% of the total marketing budget. Think about that for a moment. In 2016, social media will only represent 18%? Queue the sound of a record scratching here. With businesses finding success in social networks, why are businesses failing to realize the true opportunity brought forth by the ability to listen to, connect with, and engage with customers? While there’s value in earning views, driving traffic, and building connections through the 3F’s (friends, fans and followers), success isn’t just defined simply by what really amounts to low-hanging fruit. The truth is that businesses cannot measure what it is they don’t know to value. As a result, innovation in new engagement initiatives is stifled because we’re applying dated or inflexible frameworks to new paradigms. Social media isn’t owned by marketing, but instead the entire organization. This changes everything and makes your role so much more important. It’s up to you to learn how to think outside of the proverbial social media box to see what others don’t, the ability to improve customers experiences through the evolution of a social brand into a social business. Doing so will translate customer insights from what they do and don’t share in social networks into better products, services, and processes. See, customers want something more from their favorite businesses than creative campaigns, viral content, and everyday dialogue in social networks. Customers want to be heard and they want to know that you’re listening. How businesses use social media must remind them that they’re more than just an audience, consumer, or a conduit to “trigger” a desired social effect. Herein lies both the challenge and opportunity of social media. It’s bigger than marketing. It’s also bigger than customer service. It’s about building relationships with customers that improve experiences and more importantly, teaches businesses how to re-imagine products and internal processes to better adapt to potential crises and seize new opportunities. When it comes down to it, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Foursquare, are all channels for listening, learning, and engaging. It’s what you do within each channel that builds a community around your brand. And, at the end of the day, the value of the community you build counts for everything. It’s important to understand that we cannot assume that these networks simply exist for people to lineup for our marketing messages or promotional campaigns. Nor can we assume that they’re reeling in anticipation for simple dialogue. They want value. They want recognition. They want access to exclusive information and offers. They need direction, answers and resolution. What we’re talking about here is the multidimensional makeup of consumers and how a one-sided approach to social media forces the needs for social media to expand beyond traditional marketing to socialize the various departments, lines of business, and functions to engage based on the nature of the situation or opportunity. In the same CMO study, it was revealed that marketers believe that social media has a long way to go toward integrating into the overall company strategy. On a scale of 1-7, with one being “not integrated at all” and seven being “very integrated,” 22% chose “one.” Critical functions such as service, HR, sales, R&D, product marketing and development, IR, CSR, etc. are either not engaged or are operating social media within a silo disconnected from other efforts or possibilities. The problem is that customers don’t view a company by silo, instead they see one company, one brand, and their experience in social media forms an impression that eventually contributes to their view of your brand. The first step here is to understand business priorities and objectives to assess how social media can be additive in achieving these goals. Additionally, surveying the landscape to determine other areas of interest as its specifically related to your business. • Are customers seeking help or direction? • Who are your most valuable customers and what are they sharing? • How can you use social media to acquire and retain customers? - What ideas are circulating and how can you harness user generated activity and content to innovate or adapt to better meet the needs of customers? - How can you broaden a single customer view to recognize the varying needs of customers and how your organization can organize around each circumstance? - What insights exist based on how consumers are interacting with one another? How can this intelligence inform marketing, service, products and other important business initiatives? - How can your business extend their current efforts to deliver better customer experiences and in turn more effectively unit internal collaboration and communication? Customer demands far exceed the capabilities of the marketing department. While creating a social brand is a necessary endeavor, building a social business is an investment in customer relevance now and over time. Beyond relevance, a social business fosters a culture of change that unites employees and customers and sets a foundation for meaningful and beneficial relationships. Innovation, communication, and creativity are the natural byproducts of engagement and transformation. As a social brand, we are competing for the moment. As a social business, we are competing the future in all that we do today.
