  • Java Sorting "queue" list based on DateTime and Z Position (part of school project)

    For a school project i have a list of 50k containers that arrive on a boat. These containers need to be sorted in a list in such a way that the earliest departure DateTimes are at the top and the containers above those above them. This list then gets used for a crane that picks them up in order. I started out with 2 Collection.sort() methods: 1st one to get them in the right XYZ order Collections.sort(containers, new Comparator<ContainerData>() { @Override public int compare(ContainerData contData1, ContainerData contData2) { return positionSort(contData1.getLocation(),contData2.getLocation()); } }); Then another one to reorder the dates while keeping the position in mind: Collections.sort(containers, new Comparator<ContainerData>() { @Override public int compare(ContainerData contData1, ContainerData contData2) { int c = contData1.getLeaveDateTimeFrom().compareTo(contData2.getLeaveDateTimeFrom()); int p = positionSort2(contData1.getLocation(), contData2.getLocation()); if(p != 0) c = p; return c; } }); But i never got this method to work.. What i got working now is rather quick and dirty and takes a long time to process (50seconds for all 50k): First a sort on DateTime: Collections.sort(containers, new Comparator<ContainerData>() { @Override public int compare(ContainerData contData1, ContainerData contData2) { return contData1.getLeaveDateTimeFrom().compareTo(contData2.getLeaveDateTimeFrom()); } }); Then a correction function that bumps top containers up: containers = stackCorrection(containers); private static List<ContainerData> stackCorrection(List<ContainerData> sortedContainerList) { for(int i = 0; i < sortedContainerList.size(); i++) { ContainerData current = sortedContainerList.get(i); // 5 = Max Stack (0 index) if(current.getLocation().getZ() < 5) { //Loop through possible containers above current for(int j = 5; j > current.getLocation().getZ(); --j) { //Search for container above for(int k = i + 1; k < sortedContainerList.size(); ++k) if(sortedContainerList.get(k).getLocation().getX() == current.getLocation().getX()) { if(sortedContainerList.get(k).getLocation().getY() == current.getLocation().getY()) { if(sortedContainerList.get(k).getLocation().getZ() == j) { //Found -> move container above current sortedContainerList.add(i, sortedContainerList.remove(k)); k = sortedContainerList.size(); i++; } } } } } } return sortedContainerList; } I would like to implement this in a better/faster way.     I am trying to compute (360 / 24) / 60 I keep getting the answer 0.0 when I should get 0.25 In words: I want to divide 360 by 24 and then divide the result by 60 public class Divide { public static void main(String[] args){ float div = ((360 / 24) / 60); System.out.println(div); } } This prints out: 0.0 Why is that? Am I doing something really stupid, or is there a good reason for this

    I have the following scenario : public class A { private int x = 5; public void print() { System.out.println(x); } } public class B extends A { private int x = 10; /*public void print() { System.out.println(x); }*/ public static void main(String[] args) { B b = new B(); b.print(); } } On executing the code, the output is : 5. How to access the child class(B's) variable(x) via the parent class method? Could this be done without overriding the print() method (i.e. uncommenting it in B)? [This is important because on overriding we will have to rewrite the whole code for the print() method again]

  • Java: Using multiple Threads to paint simultaniously on a JPanel

    I have a JPanel on which I wish to have several threads painting "animations" on. An "animation" consists of a JLabel with an ImageIcon on it, which is being moved from one area of the screen to another area. Now, problem is - I want several such animations to be portrayed on screen by those threads mentioned. Problem is - the JPanel's "paint()" method can only be trigged by one thread at a time - causing the animations to execute serially, instead of in a parallel way. Any idea how to have several such animations on screen at the same time?

Can we find it through some query like objList.filter('id=2'); wihout looping through the list? If not, then why? This can be so useful method and used as an alternative to write tedious for loop? That area is not adhering to the color of my panel. For example I'm setting my panel to blue but the area around the button is still white. What is the name of that area.     Hi! I'm using multiple threads in my application. Basically I have a combo box and upon selecting Inbox, p1 resumes and p2 is suspended and upon selecting Send, p2 starts and p1 stops. Below is the code (I'm sure it's not perfect) public void modifyText(ModifyEvent e) { if (combo.getText().equals("Inbox")) { synchronized(p2) { p2.cont = false; } table.removeAll(); synchronized(p1) { p1.cont = true; p1.notify(); } } else if (combo.getText().equals("Sent")) { synchronized(p2) { p1.cont = false; } table.removeAll(); synchronized(p1) { p2.cont = true; p2.notify(); } } } }); and for P1 and P2 I have this inside their while loops: synchronized (this) { while (cont == false) try { wait(); } catch (Exception e) { } } ... As it is it's now working (I'm a beginner to threads). On pressing Sent in the combo box, I get an IllegalStateMonitorException. Could anyone help me solve the problem plz? Abstract class A Class B extends class A independent Class C In class D that contains the main method, I create a list of instances of class B List<B> b = method-call();` // the method returns a list of instances of class B Now in class C I have one method that is common to both A and B, and hence I don't want to duplicate it. I want to have one method that takes as input an instance of class A, as follows: public void some-method(LIst<A> a) However, when I do: C c = new C(). c. some-method(b) I get an error that some-method is not applicable for the argument List, instead it's expecting to get List. Is there a good way to fix this problem? Many thanks!

But when doing the other three operations, I don't seem to get any errors, but the actions are not reflected on to the DB. Please help...   • Dynamic Image Caching with Java

    I have a servlet with an API that delivers images from GET requests. The servlet creates a data file of CAD commands based on the parameters of the GET request. This data file is then delivered to an image parser, which creates an image on the file system. The servlet reads the image and returns the bytes on the response. All of the IO and the calling of the image parser program can be very taxing and images of around 80kb are rendering in 3-4000ms on a local system. There are roughly 20 parameters that make up the GET request. Each correlates to a different portion of the image. So, the combinations of possible images is extremely large. To alleviate the loading time, I plan to store BLOBs of rendered images in a database. If a GET request matches one previously executed, I will pull from cache. Else, I will render a new one. This does not fix "first-time" run, but will help "n+1 runs". Any other ideas on how I can improve performance?

    I am using OpenGl in android and they have a callback method called draw that gets called with out my control. (As fast as the device can handle if I am not mistaken) I have a list of "GameObjects" that have a .draw method and a .update method. I have two different threads that handle each of those. So, the question is, can I declare two different iterators in two different methods in two different threads that iterate over the same Linked List? If so, do I simply declare ListIterator<GameObject> l = objets.listIterator() each time I want a new iterator and it won't interfere with other iterators?
