Windows Vista Home memory usage problem [closed]

Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

Cannot assign multi-line values to CustomAttributes with Set-Mailbox

A colleague is implementing an application that generates signatures and publishes them to Outlook. It would be useful to him if I could store a multi-line string for each user in Active-Directory. Using one of the Custom-Attributes seems obvious, but if I try set-mailbox biglig -CustomAtribute1 "First Line``r``n Second Line" then CustomAttribute1 gets set to "FirstLineSecondLine" and looses the breaks. However, the same syntax works fine when I set e.g. StreetAddress or Notes. Of course, those are changed with set-user rather than set-mailbox. According to Technet's reference for set-user and set-mailbox, The CustomAttributes, StreetAddress, and Notes all take a system.string as their value. Is it just the case that some attributes accept multi-line strings and some don't? If so, can anyone suggest a workaround?

Folder with files shows as empty

Last night I create a new project in Visual Studio 2010, in the folder c:\development\hobby\devices. When I navigate to that folder in a new instance of Windows Explorer, I get the 'This folder is empty.' message in the files pane. If I then, from within Visual Studio, issue the "Open containing folder command", explorer opens to the folder c:\development\hobby\devices\LoopBack, where loopback is a project under the main folder. If I paste that path into another new instance of explorer, explorer correctly opens c:\development\hobby\devices. How is this possible? SOLVED: This is what comes of typing paths instead of selecting them. Some elementary detective work yielded the following interesting results: C:\>dir dev*. How can I change the default program installation directory in Windows 7?

Windows 7 is installed on my C drive, which is quite small. I am very tired of instructing new programs to put their files on my larger D drive during installation; I would like to change the default drive. This article says that you can use a registry hack, but I am giving Microsoft the benefit of the doubt and naively assuming that a configuration option exists somewhere. It's 2010... do I really have to hack my registry to make a simple tweak like this? Also, there's a ServerFault question that explains how to move the "Users" directory and create a symlink, which could also work. However, at the moment I have some apps in C:\Program Files, some apps in C:\Program Files (x86), and some apps in the corresponding folders on D:\, so it would be a hassle. Also, my small OS boot drive is a 10k RPM WD Raptor, and I feel like that probably gives a speed boost to apps installed on it that need to read & write to their directories a bunch. I wonder if it actually matters.

Sending email with Windows 8 Mail (Modern UI) being blocked by AVG Firewall

I've setup my Outlook.com email address in Windows 8 Mail (Modern UI) but is unable to send and receive emails when my AVG Internet Security 2012 Business Edition's Firewall is enable. When I disable the firewall, the emails are coming through and are being send. I know that I can most probably open the ports for IMAP on the firewall, but instead I would like to permit the application. Where/how do I find the application path for Windows 8 Mail (Modern UI) to allow all network traffic? (AVG did not show its normal Allow/Disallow notification for 1st time communications) Any advice would be appreciated.

Using a certificate in Thunderbird

I have my certifcate issued by "TC Trustcenter" in a CER file. Thunderbird 3.0 needs it as a PFX files. So I installed the CER certificate with the Internet options in the Control Panel. Thereafter I exported the certificate including the "private key" and "all certificates in the certification path" to a PFX file. After importing this certificate with Thunderbird I still cannot decrypt the mail sent to the mail address of the certificate. What else must I do to use the private key? The certificate is valid since I decrypted the mail already on another computer using Outlook. I verified the certificate serial number to ensure that I use the same certificate.

"No such file or directory"?

Ok, so I have a VDS laying around, and I thought I would turn it into a TF2 game server. When I connect to my server through PuTTY, and use wget to download the package "hldsupdatetool.bin" from Steampowered.com. I go to run it and it says "No such file or directory found". When I use "ls" to see what files are in directory, it lists "hldsupdatetool.bin" as being in the directory. So, why is it saying it's not there? This has been a headache for the past 2 days. Mail Server with Google Apps

Hello, Is there any mail server that has a feature to download (POP3) emails from another mail server like Google Apps (Gmail for your own domain), store it and then allow to users to download (POP3/IMAP) emails to their own mail client like Outlook/Live Mail? So I want it to become like a "middle mail server". I hope you guys understand it. My main reason to do so is that Google Apps got limited space for each mailbox and I also want to have emails in one space so its easy to archive and backup.

Applications on my laptop crashees every 10-20 minutes [closed]

In my windows 7 home premium, several of my application crashes after some minutes even wehn I am not touching system. For example I have outlook 2007, that works fine, but suddenly crashes. The same about visual studio 2012. It is also crashes after some minute no matter if I am working on a project or I am not touching it. the same behaviour is there, for other applications (skype, oovoo and ...). I use Microsoft security essential and there is no virus on my system. I also checked my system with Sophos anti root kit and there is no root kit there. What would be the problem?

Accept and Decline button missing in thunderbird when receiving an invitation

I'm using Thunderbird 12.0.1 with the following add-ons for the calendar : Lightning 1.4 Provider for Google calendar 0.9 I'm working with Ubuntu 12.04 My problem is when I receive an event invitation from outlook or gmail, the mail is correctly identified by Thunderbird (I have the message "this message contains an invitation to an event"). In the pretty little box in the mail (the one which contains all the details), there is no "Accpet" or "Decline" button... I found on the Lightning forum that this bug was fixed in Lightning V.1.0b2 So my question is : why do I still have this bug ??? Best regards

Force Chrome to open new pages in new window, not tab? (when opened from a program)

Whenever I click a link from something like outlook or a program opens a web page (not when I click a link from within chrome). It opens up in Chrome since it is my default browser but if I already have a page open it will open in a new tab on that same window. I can't tell you how many times I forget about this and close the window out, accidentally losing the other tab too. Ofcourse, I can open a new chrome window and find it under recently closed tabs but I would really just prefer if they opened in their own window so I can prevent this.

From last couple of weeks I am getting connection problem with my in-house exchange server 5.5 running on windows 2003. It has been working fine from last 5 years. but from few weeks it is loosing connection with other outlook clients. I have to restart my exchange server to make it work. This happens few times in a week. It looses connection somewhere between 7PM to 8AM as when I come in office. I find this problem, while it leave office it works fine. We have not installed any updates or software since last more than 2 years. What could be the reason for stop working?

How can I access a shared Exchange mailbox with IMAP (over telnet)?

I have an Mailbox which multiple users have access to, it works fine for me and I can add it in Outlook as an additional mailbox to my account and list all its content. I can access my personal mailbox using IMAP, I'm testing it by just telneting in and LIST'ing it. The problem is that another user trying to access it is having problems accessing it through IMAP; and I want to test if I can access the shared mailbox with my account - how can I do that in terms of IMAP commands? What I am doing now is: telnet mail.server 01 LOGIN user pass 02 LIST "" * 03 LOGOUT Edit: If there is another way to test this, that is an equally good answer.

Filter email view in Lotus Notes

From MS Outlook I am used to have an input field above my list of mails where I can type in a filter string such that every mail not matching this string vanishes. I remember that once - by accident (pressing a weird combination of keys because the window I was actually working in lost focus) - I got something very similar in Lotus Notes. So I think there must be something like this out there, but unfortunately I cannot find it anymore. Does somebody know how to get this kind of functionality in Lotus Notes? Thanks!

Monit mail alert failed

I have configure our Monit to monitor some of the application in our linux box (httpd,mysqld,etc...).We can receive alerts when using gmail SMTP to send email through it but it failed when we are using our exchange SMTP. Here are the gmail configuration in the monitrc : set mailserver smtp.gmail.com port 587 # primary mailserver username "[email protected]" password "mypasswd" using tlsv1 with timeout 30 seconds and it failed when I changed it to this configuration : set mailserver outlook.automanage.net port 587 # primary mailserver username "[email protected]" password "mypasswd" using tlsv1 with timeout 30 seconds I can telnet my exchange server,so the exchange server is alive and can be connected. Did I miss anything here?Or do I need to need configure something in our exchange server?

As the reality of increasing government regulations settles in, the change that comes along with it creates more challenges in compliance and ultimately on delivering the optimum return on investment. The result of this changing environment is a proliferation of compliance projects that must be executed with an already constrained set of resources, budget and time. Insurers are confronted by the need to gain visibility into all of their compliance efforts and proactively manage them. Currently that is very difficult to do as these projects often are being managed by groups across the enterprise and they lack a way to coordinate their efforts and drive greater synergies. With limited visibility and equally limited resources it is no surprise that reporting on project status and determining realistic completion of these projects is only a dream. As a result, compliance deadlines are missed, penalties are incurred, credibility with key stakeholders and the public is jeopardized and returns and competitive advantage go unrealized. Insurers need to ask themselves some key questions: Do I have “one stop” visibility into all of my compliance efforts? If not, what can I do to change that? What is top priority and how does that impact my already taxed resources? How can I figure out how to best balance my resources to get these compliance projects done as well as keep key innovation and operational efforts on track? How can ensure that I have all the requisite documentation for each compliance project I undertake? Dealing with complying with regulatory efforts is a necessary evil. Don't let the regulatory pendulum sideline your efforts to generate the greatest return on investment for your key stakeholders.
