• Teaching logical/analytical thinking

  I have been trial running a club in which I teach programming for the past year and while they have progressed what they really lack is the most fundamental concept to programming, analytical thinking. As I now approach the second year of teaching to the children (aged 12 - 14) I am now realising that before I begin teaching them the syntax and how to actually program an app (or what they would rather, a game) I need to introduce them to analytical thinking first. I have already found Scratch and similar things such as Light-Bot and will most certainly be using the, to teach them how to implement their logical thinking but what I really need are some tips or articles on how to teach analytical thinking itself to children aged 12 - 14. What I'm looking for are some ideas on how to teach the kind of thinking that these kids will need in order to get them into programming, whether that be analytical, logical or critical. How and what should I teach them relating to the way their minds need to be wired when programming solutions to problems?

  Quite a while ago, I published a paper with recommendations for a secure deployment of LDoms.  Many things happend in the mean time, and an update to that paper was due.  Besides some minor spelling corrections, many obsolete or changed links were updated.  However, the main reason for the update was the introduction of a second usage model for LDoms.  In a very short few words: With the success especially of the T4-4, many deployments make use of the hardware partitioning capabilities of that platform, assigning full PCIe root complexes to domains, mimicking dynamic system domains if you will.  This different way of using the hypervisor needed to be addressed in the paper.  You can find the updated version here: Secure Deployment of Oracle VM Server for SPARCSecond Edition I hope it'll be useful!

  I'm creating an FPS game. I'm writing my own game engine. So far all the backend stuff is going great. I'd like to support md2 as the native file format for 3D Objects, but I also want to use skeletal meshes. Does anyone know if the md2 file format supports skeletal meshes? In-case you need to know, I'm going to use blender as my Mesh creation tool and C++ as my programming language... Thanks For got to mention, the engine is based on OpenGL... Alright, for anyone who is reading this, I just found the Doom 3 md5 specifications (http://tfc.duke.free.fr/coding/md5-specs-en.html). It gives you some help on writing a parser (see bottom of link), but the example doesn't support lighting and texture mapping (the second set of example code allows for animation). • Ubuntu 12.04.3 alongside Windows 8.1

  I brought a new Notebook which has pre-installed Windows 8.1 with an uefi* (-Bios) and secure boot*. (* can switch or turn so off, still no success) When i try to install Ubuntu 12.04.3, the installer doesn't recognize Windows 8.1. There were options, to delete the whole disk or do something else. The second option, shows a few partitions (NTFS) but no Windows. The Ubuntu 13.10 version even did start on my notebook, it gets frozen during start up. (I thought. maybe the newer one will recognize Windows.) I'm not very confident in manipulating grub, I hope there is an easy way or an easy description. • Cycles through black screen on login after changing password

  On my laptop, I forgot the password to my Ubuntu partition, so I logged into the root command shell on the recovery start up option in GRUB so that I could change the password. On my first attempt to change my user password, I got this error: root@username-PC:~# passwd username (*not my actual user name*) Enter new UNIX password: Retype new UNIX password: passwd: Authentication token manipulation error passwd: password unchanged After doing some research, I discovered that I was stuck as read only on the file system, so I ran the following command to remount the file partition as read/write: mount -rw -o remount / Afterwards, I change my user password using passwd and it was changed successfully. I restarted my laptop and tried to login using the new password but the only thing that happened was after entering my password it flashed to a black screen with some text that I couldn't make out except for "Ubuntu 12.04" then another black screen half a second later, and finally back to the login screen. Repeated attempts to login results in only this action.

• Black screen with blinking cursor! [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? From my Windows XP SP3 machine, I downloaded the live image file for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I then burned a bootable CD. Then I went into the BIOS and set installation settings to (first) CD drive and (second) disabled. However, when I boot I only get a black screen with a blinking cursor. After some time I might get some error messages. Even if I leave it for hours I get nothing. FYI: I don't know how to go to the GRUB menu. Please make the answers easy since I am a young beginner.

• Is it true that first versions of C compilers ran for dozens of minutes and required swapping floppy disks between stages?

  Inspired by this question. I heard that some very very early versions of C compilers for personal computers (I guess it's around 1980) resided on two or three floppy disks and so in order to compile a program one had to first insert the disk with "first pass", run the "first pass", then change to the disk with "second pass", run that, then do the same for the "third pass". Each pass ran for dozens of minutes so the developer lost lots of time in case of even a typo. How realistic is that claim? What were actual figures and details?

  I already have several ways to solve this, but I am interested in whether there is a better solution to this problem. Please only respond with a pure numeric algorithm. String manipulation is not acceptable. I am looking for an elegant and efficient solution. Given a currency value (ie $251.03), split the value into two half and round to two decimal places. The key is that the first half should round up and the second should round down. So the outcome in this scenario should be $125.52 and $125.51.

• Is it safe to resize root partition?

  My HDD is partitioned into two equal sized partitions. First is being used for Windows and Second for Ubuntu. Everything is working fine. But now I want to remove Windows and use the disk completely for Ubuntu. I can easily boot from live cd and use GParted to delete Windows partition and then expand Ubuntu partition to use the whole hard disk. But I want to know if its safe i.e Will resizing Ubuntu partition change any thing else like the partition UUID or any thing else? Do I need to reinstall grub after resizing the root partition? It would be great if some one who has already done this can give their advice here.

After, I had to restart my computer and when I ran it for the second time, something strange was occurred: according to the System Monitor, Rosegarden was running, in spite of I couldn't see the application, sometimes it's opened at other desktop and also Unity always has some instability problems like disappear the title bar of other programs or a zone is marked (for example, when we drag a window to the right side, we can see an "orange" area and the window's size is reduced to distribute at the middle of the desktop) at the left side of the screen and isn't hidden.

Second instance is identical, except instead of names and character count I would be displaying random images and use their width.

• Corona SDK: Animation takes a long time to play after "prepare" step

  First off, I'm using the current publicly available build, version 2011.704 I'm building a platformer, and have a character that runs along and jumps when the screen is tapped. While jumping, the animation code has him assume a svelte jumping pose, and upon the detection of a collision with the ground, he returns to running. All of this happens. The problem is that there is this strange gap of time, about 1/2 a second by the feel of it, where my character sits on the first frame of the run animation after landing, before it actually starts playing. This leads me to believe that the problem is somewhere between the "prepare" step of loading up a sprite set's animation sequence and the "play" step. Thanks in advance for any help :). They will still meet the June 2011 date for many "urgently required" projects but some projects will not come until the second half of 2011. • Simple Little Registry Editor - New Release

  I have posted a new release of the Simple Little Registry Editor found in Windows CE: Simple Little Registry Editor.  This release fixes a problem with writing DWORD values when the most significant bit is set.  The application uses RegistryKey.SetValue.  There seems to be a problem with how the .NET CompactFramework (and the full framework) handle the second argument during the call which causes an exception.   So I have a SL Copy of Mac OS X Snow Leopard.DMG and I am running Ubuntu 12.0.4. I tried burn the DMG to a DVD using CD/DVD Creator however when I try, it comes up with a message saying 'The size of the file is over 2 GiB. Files larger than 2 GiB are not supported by the ISO9660 standard in its first and second versions (the most widespread ones). It is recommended to use the third version of the ISO9660 standard, which is supported by most operating systems, including Linux and all versions of Windows™. However, Mac OS X cannot read images created with version 3 of the ISO9660 standard.' How do I bypass this so my DVD is bootable on my iMac. By the way, I'm running Ubuntu on the iMac and it is my only partition. No other OS Installed

• Nearly technical books that you enjoyed reading

  I've seen questions about "What books you recommend" in several of the Stack Exchange verticals. Perhaps these two questions (a and b) are the most popular. But, I'd like to ask for recommendations of a different kind of books. I have read in the past "The Passionate Programmer" and I am now reading "Coders at Work". Both of them I would argue that are almost a biography (or biographies in the "Coders at work") or even a bit of "self-help" book (that is more the case of the "Passionate programmer"). And please don't get me wrong. I loved reading the first one, and I am loving reading the second one. There's a lot of value in it, mostly in "lessons of the trade" kind of way. So, here is what I'd like to know. What other books that you read that are similar to these ones in intent that you enjoyed? Why?

• Mistaken dist-upgrade, is this bad?

  I was looking for Update Manager on Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition and couldn't find it, so in Terminal I did: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade I got a message saying some packages were "held back" and searching online gave me the suggestion to do: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade So I did that and it updated my kernel and now uname -a says I have 2.6.35-23-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP. My system is still working normally, but I'm now second-guessing if I did the right thing. Was this kernel update meant for the next version of Ubuntu? Should I try to back it out?
