• Macbook OSX applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) works fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my Macbook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed on of the applications Titanium. Didn't seem to help. • Vista install works on one computer, but bluescreens another (on which Vista is known to work)

  I hope my explanations make some sense -- please ask for clarification if they don't. I had a computer running Windows Vista (Ultimate, 64-bit). All was well! Then one day there was a nasty power surge at the office, and it died. (We didn't have surge protectors at the office, unfortunately. I assumed our lines were conditioned elsewhere, or was not an issue here. Oops.) After some testing, it was determined that the PSU, motherboard, and RAM were bad. While waiting for new hardware to arrive, I put my hard disk in a spare PC which had identical parts (mobo/CPU/RAM/PSU/video). Everything worked perfectly. The only way I could even tell it wasn't my computer is because Vista asked to re-activate itself with the new hardware, which worked fine, too. So the hard disk seems OK. Then the new parts arrived. The old motherboard model is no longer manufactured, so it's a new one with the same CPU/RAM/videocard/etc. slots. The PSU is also new, while the RAM I'm using is from the spare PC mentioned above. When I put it together and tried booting with my old hard disk, it starts to boot Windows, and then (fairly early in the process) gives a bluescreen and immediately reboots (so I can't see whatever the bluescreen is trying to tell me). I tried "safe mode", which also bluescreened. I tried booting the Vista DVD and running the repair utility, which found a Vista install, confirmed that it would not boot, and, eventually, declared that it was unable to repair it. I installed Vista fresh on a new hard disk, with the new mobo/etc., and it works perfectly. (That's what I'm running now.) I've also booted a Linux CD here, which ran great, and I've run Memtest86+ for a while, which found no errors. So all the hardware apart from the old hard disk seems OK, too. I don't think the problem is with my old Vista hard disk, since I used that with another mobo/CPU just fine. I don't think it's any other part of the new hardware, since I'm able to use it (and test it) with no trouble. It's just the combination of my old Vista install plus the new PC hardware that's not happy. I can get my data off my old hard disk and onto my new hard disk, and reinstall my apps, but it would be nice if I could fix things so I could continue to use my old hard disk as before. The latest hypothesis I've heard is that Vista had trouble with the new hardware (i.e., motherboard), but we have no idea what to do about that (except Safe Mode, which didn't work). Suggestions? Hypotheses for what's not right about this combination of Vista install and motherboard? Thanks!

• Migrate from MySQL to PostgreSQL on Linux (Kubuntu)

  Storyline Trying to migrate a database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. All the documentation I have read covers, in great detail, how to migrate the structure. I have found very little documentation on migrating the data. The schema has 13 tables (which have been migrated successfully) and 9 GB of data. MySQL version: 5.1.x PostgreSQL version: 8.4.x I want to use the R programming language to analyze the data using SQL select statements; PostgreSQL has PL/R, but MySQL has nothing (as far as I can tell). A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Create the database location (/var has insufficient space; also dislike having the PostgreSQL version number everywhere -- upgrading would break scripts!): sudo mkdir -p /home/postgres/main sudo cp -Rp /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main /home/postgres sudo chown -R postgres.postgres /home/postgres sudo chmod -R 700 /home/postgres sudo usermod -d /home/postgres/ postgres All good to here. How do I ensure that adding new rows in PostgreSQL will start enumerating from the index of the last row inserted (and not conflict with an existing primary key from the sequence)? • using own mail server with external domain and dns. Now have internal dns. dkim test not working

  I am not very knowledgeable in this area, but have been able to make great head way. Now i am stuck I setup my own mail server, e.g mailbox.example.com. I had the domain dns point to my mail server in my office. i was able to set up everything working fine. such as dkim and spf records. Recently i decided to setup an internal dns server in the office so as to resolve some addresses for some development servers internally. Ok the problem now is my mail server is sitting on the internal dns server (the mail server is on the same box as the dns server) its still able to send and receive emails but not sure if dkim is working properly. when i try to do a dkim test "amavisd test keys" i get "invalid (public key: not available)" and i know that that means i have a dns issue. so what should i do? I am currently looking at my internal dns zonefile and i dont know what to do (i am using bind dns server on an ubuntu-server box). do i configure a dkim txt record on the local dns ? or is there a way to forward dkim "request" to the external dns ? or do i have this whole thing done wrong ? • Mac OS X behind OpenLDAP and Samba

  I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. • MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed one of the applications (Appcelerator Titanium). Didn't seem to help. • openstack, bridging, netfilter and dnat

  In a recent upgrade (from Openstack Diablo on Ubuntu Lucid to Openstack Essex on Ubuntu Precise), we found that DNS packets were frequently (almost always) dropped on the bridge interface (br100). For our compute-node hosts, that's a Mellanox MT26428 using the mlx4_en driver module. We've found two workarounds for this: Use an old lucid kernel (e.g. 2.6.32-41-generic). This causes other problems, in particular the lack of cgroups and the old version of the kvm and kvm_amd modules (we suspect the kvm module version is the source of a bug we're seeing where occasionally a VM will use 100% CPU). We've been running with this for the last few months, but can't stay here forever. With the newer Ubuntu Precise kernels (3.2.x), we've found that if we use sysctl to disable netfilter on bridge (see sysctl settings below) that DNS started working perfectly again. We thought this was the solution to our problem until we realised that turning off netfilter on the bridge interface will, of course, mean that the DNAT rule to redirect VM requests for the nova-api-metadata server (i.e. redirect packets destined for 169.254.169.254:80 to compute-node's-IP:8775) will be completely bypassed. Long-story short: with 3.x kernels, we can have reliable networking and broken metadata service or we can have broken networking and a metadata service that would work fine if there were any VMs to service. We haven't yet found a way to have both. Anyone seen this problem or anything like it before? got a fix? or a pointer in the right direction? Our suspicion is that it's specific to the Mellanox driver, but we're not sure of that (we've tried several different versions of the mlx4_en driver, starting with the version built-in to the 3.2.x kernels all the way up to the latest 1.5.8.3 driver from the mellanox web site. The mlx4_en driver in the 3.5.x kernel from Quantal doesn't work at all) BTW, our compute nodes have supermicro H8DGT motherboards with built-in mellanox NIC: 02:00.0 InfiniBand: Mellanox Technologies MT26428 [ConnectX VPI PCIe 2.0 5GT/s - IB QDR / 10GigE] (rev b0) we're not using the other two NICs in the system, only the Mellanox and the IPMI card are connected. Bridge netfilter sysctl settings: net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables = 0 Since discovering this bridge-nf sysctl workaround, we've found a few pages on the net recommending exactly this (including Openstack's latest network troubleshooting page and a launchpad bug report that linked to this blog-post that has a great description of the problem and the solution)....it's easier to find stuff when you know what to search for :), but we haven't found anything on the DNAT issue that it causes.

• Indesign Import XML into Automatic Page generation, data merge

  I've created some InDesign Pages that I want to use as templates. I've created an XML file with all the appropriate data. I want to merge the XML data with the InDesign page and have a few hundred pages automatically generated. I've been reading online and working with InDesign's "Import XML" features without any luck. The documentation has been pretty poor for me. And Google searches haven't returned much fruitful. Here are my present steps: I create a Master Page of my template I add a bunch of text frames where I want the imported data from the XML file to be places I open the "Tags" window and Import and XML file I mark my text frames in the Master Document with the appropriate tags I then add a lot of pages (like 200) to the document Then I use "Import XML" to try and get the data brought in and filled across all 200 pages. This is where I fail. There's something I'm missing. It might be that InDesign doesn't work as I'm expecting... Does anyone have any good tips for mail-merge like functionality with an XML document and auto-generation of InDesign pages? By the way, here's an example of Adobe's great documentation for merging repeated XML elements. There's got to be more... • OSX 10.6.6 SSH md5 break-in check

  Information Recently one of the linux servers that I access was compromised to steal passwords and ssh keys using a modified ssh binary. This lead me to question if the attacker had compromised my OSX Laptop which had ssh access turned on. A sophos virus scan turned up nothing, and I did not have rkhunter installed before the attack, so I could not compare hashes of the system binaries to be sure. However because OSX is relatively standard for each of their major releases, I asked fiends for md5 hashes md5 /usr/bin/ssh and md5 /usr/sbin/sshd as a basic first check to see if there was anything different about my machine. The different hash for my system made me worried that these binaries might have been compromised. So I made sure that my backup for the week was good, and dived into formatting my system and reinstalling OSX. After reinstalling OSX from the manufacturer DVD, I found that the MD5 hash did not change for either ssh, or sshd. Goal Make sure that my system is does not have any malicious software. Should I be worried that this base install of OSX (with no other software installed) has been compromised? I have also updated my system to 10.6.6 and found no change as well. • Linux Mint Wireless doesn't connect

  I'm having a great problem, I've installed Linux mint debian edition (LMDE), and following this tutorial http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/161 I did installed the network driver. The available connections appears to me, but when i try to connect to my connection at first time, I got this message: "(4) Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." And the following tries, I got this another message: "(32) Insufficient privileges." I'm accepting ideas. Thanks. • An alternative to Google Talk, AIM, MSN, et al [closed]

  I'm not entirely sure whether this part of stack exchange is the most adequate for my question, but it would seem to me that people sharing this kind of concern would converge either here, or possibly on a more unix-specific sub site. Either way, here goes. Background Feel free to skip to The Question, below. This should, however, help those interested understand where I'm coming from, and where I expect to get, messaging-wise. My online talking place-to-go has been IRC for the last fifteen years. I think it's a great protocol, and clients out there are very good. I still use, and will always continue to use IRC for most of my chat needs. But then, there is private instant messaging. While IRC can solve this with queries and DCC chats, the protocol just isn't meant to work too well on intermittent connections, such as a mobile device, where you can often walk around places with low signal. I used MSN for a while, but didn't like it. The concept was awesome, but I think Microsoft didn't get the implementation quite right. When they started adding all that eye candy, and my buddies started flooding me with custom icons and buzzing my screen to it's knees, I shut my account and told folks that missed me to just email or call me. Much whining happened, I got called many weird things for not using MSN, but folks eventually got over it. Next, Google Talk came along, and seemed to be a lot better than MSN ever was. The protocol was open, so I could use whatever client I felt a fancy for. With the advent of smart phones, I just got myself a gtalk client on the phone, and have had a really decent integrated mostly-universal IM solution. Over the last few months, all Google services have been feeling flaky. IMs will often arrive anywhere between twenty minutes and one hour after being sent, clients will randomly disconnect, client priorities seem to work sometimes, and sometimes just a random device of those connected will get an IM. I think the time has come to look for greener grass. The Question It's rather hard to put what I'm looking for into precise words. I guess I just want something that is kind of like MSN/Gtalk, but that doesn't let me down when I need it. IRC is pretty much perfect, but the protocol just isn't designed to work well on mobile devices. Really, at this point I'm considering sticking to IRC for desktop messaging, and SMS/email on the phone, but I hope that in this day and age there is something better out there.

• Mac OS X behind OpenLDAP and Samba

  I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. Any help is appreciated, because I'm banging my head against the wall at this point. • long access times and errors in iis application

  I am having an issue with an IIS application (details of environment at the end of the message). The web site works great most of the time and I cannot reproduce any error in our test system. On the live system however with on averare of 5-15 requests per second I have a problem with that some requests (about 0.05%) will take over 300 seconds to complete. The other requests complete withing 5-10 seconds. It seem like if all the errornous requests end up with a Timer_EntityBody error in the error log. I have never seen this as an end user but I guess that they will receive some kind of error message. I am trying to find out what can be causing this errornous behaviour. Any ideas are welcome. I have read something about that there can be an MTU issue if ICMP and MTU protocols are blocked in the firewall. Does that sound reasonable? I have also read about updating to IIS 7 should do the trick. Does it sound reasonable? I think that the problem has another cause but I have no idea of what. I have tried running hte perormance monitor, monitoring for database locks and active transaction counts. I can see some of these in the perfmon log for the MSSQL server (another machine) for example: Active transactions is sometimes peaking and sometimes for long periods Lock waits per seconds is sometimes peaking Transactions per second is sometimes peaking Page IO Latch wait is sometimes peaking Lock wait time (ms) is sometimes peaking But I cannot see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. On the IIS server machine I can also see with perfmon that some values peak a few times during a day: Request execution time Avg disk queue length I can neither see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log.   Ok so i have a server and I want to put a few applications on and i am having vhost configuration problems. • Need help making an ODBC MySQL Connection

  Short Version: How do I connect from PowerShell to an ODBC 5.1 MySQL Driver? I can't seem to find any connection strings that accurately have a "Provider" field for this particular instance. (See bottom of this question for examples/errors) ===== Long Version: I'm not a server guy, and I've been handed the task of setting up PowerGadgets on our network. I have a MySQL server running on a Linux box, that is configured for remote access and has a user defined for remote access as well. On my windows desktop PC, I have PowerGadgets installed. I installed the MySQL ODBC 5.1 connector, and went to Control Panel Data Sources and set up a User DSN connection to the database. The connection, user, and pass seem to be correct because it lists the tables of the database in my windows control panel. Where I'm running into trouble is in 3 places in PowerGadgets: When selecting a data source, I can select "SQL Server". Inputting the servers IP address does not work and I can't get this option to work at all. When selecting a data source, I can select "OleDB". This screen has a wizard on it, that appears to populate all the correct information (including database table names!) for me. "Test Connection" runs great. But if I try to complete the wizard, I get the error "The .NET Framework data provider for OLEDB does not support the MS Ole DB provider for ODBC Drivers." When selecting a data source, I can select "ODBC". This screen does not have a wizard and I cannot figure out a "connection string" that works. Typically it will respond with the error "The field 'Provider' is missing". Googling ODBC connection strings doesn't reveal any examples with a "provider" field and have no idea what to put in here. The connection string (for #2) above contains "SQLOLEDB" as a provider, and upon inputting that value into this connection string I get the same connection error that #2 gets. I believe I can solve my problems by figuring out a connection string for #3 but don't know where to get started. (PowerGadgets also allows for PowerShell support but I believe I will run into the same problem there) == Here's my current PowerShell connection that doesn't work: invoke-sql -connection "Driver={MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver};Initial Catalog=hq_live;Data Source=HQDB" -sql "Select * FROM accounts" Spits back the error: "Invoke-Sql : An OLE DB Provider was not specified in the ConnectionString.   I am experiencing issues with VMWare vSphere 5.1 and NFS storage on 2 different setups, which result in an "All Path Down" state for the NFS shares. This first happened once or twice a day, but lately it occurs much more frequent, as specially when Acronis Backup jobs are running. I searched the web extensively and asked in forums, but till now nobody was able to help me. Based on blog posts and VMWare KB articles I tried the following NFS settings: Net.TcpipHeapSize = 32 Net.TcpipHeapMax = 128 NFS.HartbeatFrequency = 12 NFS.HartbeatMaxFailures = 10 NFS.HartbeatTimeout = 5 NFS.MaxQueueDepth = 64 Instead of NFS.MaxQueueDepth = 64 I already tried other settings like NFS.MaxQueueDepth = 32 or even NFS.MaxQueueDepth = 1. Unfortunately without any luck. It would be great if someone could help me on this issue. It is really annoying. Thanks in advance for all the help. [UPDATE] As I explained in the comment below, here is the network setup: On the production setup the NFS traffic is bound to a separate VLAN with ID 20. I am using a HP 1810 24 Port Switch. The OpenFiler system is connected to the VLAN with 4 Intel GbE NICs with dynamic LACP. The ESXis both have 4 Intel GbE NICs using 2 static LACP trunks containing 2 NICs each. One pair is connected to the regular LAN and the other one to the VLAN 20.   On my network I have two subnets: 10.100.1.0/24 - Wired/wireless 10.100.7.0/24 - VPN Both subnets are served by isc-dhcp-server running on a Debian VM. This same VM runs bind9 for my DNS. ISC-DHCP-SERVER is configured to use DDNS and update BIND9 with hosts/IPs. Everything runs great until a device drops off the wired/wireless network and pops onto the VPN. When connecting on the VPN, a DHCP lease is handed out on the new subnet but DDNS does not update BIND9. Since the device has A/TXT/PTR records it appears ISC-DHCP-SERVER won't switch them to the new IP. • Layer 3 switch routing

  I need help moving over to using our layer 3 switch as the inter vlan routing device rather than our cisco router. I've mostly got it working but I've got stuck near the end and need some advice (I think I just need a bit of education on the subject really). Cur I have a Dell PowerConnect 7048 connecting to a Cisco 1841 router. I've got a few key excerpts from the configs to provide the key information. So what I'm doing is moving clients over so that their default gateway is a 172.31.x.254 address rather than a 172.31.x.1 address. This works great for inter-vlan routing, I have no issues with this. The switch can also access the router no worries, and users on the 172.31.14.0/24 network can access all interfaces and sub-interfaces on the router, including 172.31.14.1. They can also access all of the interfaces that the router connects off to, no worries there. The problem I have is that users on the 172.31.16.0/24 and 172.31.19.0/24 subnets cannot access either 172.31.14.1 or any of the subnets the router connects to. They can, however, connect to BOTH of the sub interfaces on the router from either subnet. What am I missing here? Why can't the vlans connect to the non-sub interface on the router? Are tagged packets being sent to this interface?

• 2 Servers setup for redundency, backup

  I presently have 1 dedicated virtual server running my website/blog/mail, etc. This is on Hyper-V with 512MB RAM. Windows Web2008. With the VM, I have these running within it: SmarterMail – for emails MS DNS – I have my own nameservers on this server SQL Express IIS7 2 IP Address I have now leased 2 physical servers : P4 2.6Ghz 1GB RAM 80GB HDD. With these new servers, I get 2 IPs per server as well. These are running Windows 2008 Standard. With the VM the HDD was obviously on a RAID setup so I was not worried about hardware issues as it fell on the provider to manage. However, with the new servers the HDD is not RAID’d, hence my concern is that if it fails I need a backup position. What would be the most ideal setup to go for? I am thinking: Server 1: (Web/PrimaryDNS) DNS – NS1 SQL Express – OFF turn on when required, ie. Server2 is down SmarterMail – OFF turn on when required, ie. Server2 is down IIS 7 Server2:(SQL/Backup) DNS – NS2 SQL Web Edition SmarterMail IIS 7 How can I set it up so that if 1 goes down I can have everything on 2 instantly or by manual switching over. I am confused as other DNS servers will cache the web servers IP address for requests, and if that server goes down, the backup server will have a different IP. How do I make this work? I will be doing routine backups, in which case I will keep copies of backups on both servers. If I am copying the same stuff on both servers like a mirror then I am losing on using the true performance out of it. It's like 1 server is always on standby. Ideally I want SQL and web on 2 diff machines for best performance. If Server1 goes down, I should be able to switch to Server2 fairly easily. I don't have a problem with manual intervention to start the sql/mail services, etc. In terms of scalabilty, the VM has coped pretty well to date. Moving forward the SQL and IIS workload is going to double pretty quickly. Some ideas would be great.

• Windows Media Player Object with Video_TS Files - No Sound Anymore

  I copied a bunch of my DVDs (yes, owned) to a drive and created a basic webpage to be able to search and play them. I am using the code at the bottom to create a Windows Media Player object and then play the video. The video files are pulled off the DVD in the original format so each movie has files like this: VTS_01_0.BUP VTS_01_0.IFO VTS_01_1.VOB VTS_01_2.VOB VTS_01_3.VOB VTS_01_4.VOB VTS_01_5.VOB VTS_01_6.VOB This all worked great until just recently. On my dev machine, I can play the videos but now, all of a sudden, there is no sound. I have tried the following but no luck: The video is not muted and the sound is at 50% Under the sound icon, under mixer, I checked IE and it is fine Sound works fine using another program, says WinAmp Opening Windows Media Player directly from the Start Menu and then playing the same movie works fine and I get sound I ensured that the option in IE to play sound on websites is checked I can play sound on other people's websites where they have embedded WMP files I tried resetting all of the IE settings on the Advanced tab in IE I tried my website, with my code below on another computer, AND IT WORKS FINE! I tried copying the media files listed above from the computer that works fine to my dev computer and it still doesn't work. If I try using a ".wmv" file, the sound does work By the way, I am using Win7 with IE8. As you can see, this is driving me crazy! Why would it stop working on my one computer and the same code and files work fine on another computer? • varnish3, mod_geoip with apache2 using mod_rewrite and mod_rpaf

  I am maintaining a website with 3 different versions of the site, with 3 different languages, handles with a single system written in php, which takes in environment variables based on the domain name that is being accessed. These are the three sites: myshop.com : english international version myshop.eu : european version of site myshop.ru : russian version of the site when myshop.com is accessed from russia it is to be redirected to myshop.ru, and any country from europe accesses myshop.com, is redirected to myshop.eu, and international visitors stay at myshop.com, although they can go to the country specific site. All these redirections for the country is done using GeoIP apache2 mod in order to determine the country code, which is used in a RewriteCondition to state a RewriteRule, there are some exceptions of IPs that do not do the rewrite for, basically the IPs of the developer's PCs. The site has been doing just fine, until we decided to setup varnish to give the site a boost, it really did give it a great boost, but the country specific rewrites has become buggy. What started to happen is that a russian visitor can go to myshop.com and won't be redirected, until he clicks a random link (perhaps a link not cached by varnish yet) and the user is redirected to their specific country. For that i setup mod_rpaf, and for exceptions to the rewrite rule (for the developer's ip), i used this RewriteCond %{HTTP:X-FORWARDED-FOR} !^43\.43\.43\.43, and i restarted varnish and apache2, it worked for a while, then it messed up again. And whole day i have been doing changes however i have little no clue as to what's going on, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it half works, etc... As for geoip, i used a php to check the $_SERVER variable, and here is the general idea of the output [HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR] => 43.43.43.44 [HTTP_X_VARNISH] => 1705675599 [SERVER_ADDR] => 127.0.0.1 [SERVER_PORT] => 80 [REMOTE_ADDR] => 43.43.43.44 [GEOIP_ADDR] => 43.43.43.44 [GEOIP_CONTINENT_CODE] => EU [GEOIP_COUNTRY_CODE] => FR [GEOIP_COUNTRY_NAME] => France Now, thanks to the "random" redirects, i hardly have a clue as to what is going on, so can you guys please give me some ideas as to what tools to use to debug this? I have tried to see the redirect logs, but they really dont show much, and varnishlog isn't helping much either - although i must admit i am no professional at varnish. I believe the problem is with varnish trying to cache the url, and thus apache redirects are not being done properly, however visits the site first has a redirect, and based on that other users are served the content, depending on from where the user was when the cache was last updated, is it correct? if so, how can i solve the problem? Also, i have the option of using geoip redirects on varnish3 instead of using apache2 to do the redirects, is that what the best practice is? Any suggestion as to debugging this or to fix this would be helpful! thnx!

• Troubleshooting an unstable internet connection

  My MacBook Pro running OS X (10.9, but I had the same problem before) is connected to a Belkin router via WiFi and, using Virgin Media as the ISP, to the internet. The connection is extremely unstable – on some days, I get a ping timeout every few seconds. In addition, some domains seem to suffer general connectivity issues. For instance, I often find that while the youtube.com website loads, none of the videos (which are hosted on a separate domain) do. At other times, videos load but always fail to buffer, even though the actual connection speed is ok, even though I’ve disabled dash playback. Since I’m living in a rented room and the ISP contract isn’t actually mine I’ve got only limited possibilities of addressing the problem. In particular, I have no access to the router configuration and my non tech savvy landlady, while sympathetic, is not in a great hurry to hand the problem over to the ISP’s customer support. What’s more, I seem to be the only person in the house experiencing these problems – but I can imagine that this is simply because I’m the only one who’s using the internet continuously. I’m searching for specific tests that might be able to pinpoint – and ideally solve – the problem. So far all I’ve managed to do is establish that Virgin is routing my traffic in mysterious ways. Here’s an excerpt from traceroute google.co.uk. It never seems to reach a destination. Is this normal? A friend living in the same town who is also with Virgin Media has a more conventional traceroute output: 7 hops to google.co.uk, all of which send the ICMP TIME_EXCEEDED response. The obvious fix – rebooting the router – doesn’t seem to help. As far as I can tell, the WiFi connection is stable (I can always ping the router) so the problem is further downstream. I’ve tried using an alternative DNS before (OpenDNS) but if anything, this made things worse. In fact, it made all Google services nigh unreachable.
