• Automatic program update and Windows 7

  Hi We have a suite of programs that check for new versions at startup, and then download new versions to run if required. This is obviously a problem in Windows 7, when it is locked down as a 'standard user', as they can't write to the c:\program files directory and below. Anyone seen a example of an application that gets around with issue ? Our applications are written in Delphi, but an example in any language would be useful. Thanks in advance Update: We already have a system for determing whether a new version exists, the only problem is the download and install (if required), as this requires elevation.   Hello, We implementing offline feature to an existing application. We have implemented the syn with SQL Server internal change tracking and over WCF using MS Sync Framework (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sync/default.aspx) All of our tables have primary key as integer, we cannot move to GUID. So as you are thinking we will have identity crises between applications. So we decided to go with the way Merge replication does(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa179416(SQL.80).aspx) partition the primary key range. Below is the example scenario - Server Table A - ID Range - 0 to 100 Client 1 Table A - ID Range - 101 to 200 Client 2 Table A - ID Range - 201 to 300 how to implement this ? i know we can use BCC CHECKIDENT (yourtable, reseed, value) CHECK (([ID]<=(100))) but this does not solve the issue.... Merge replication provides an option of "Not for replication"(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa237102(SQL.80).aspx) to achieve insert form clients and still maintain the set range.. can i use that somehow here? please help...

• WinXP Parallels Guest with OS X host -- communication between the two?

  The setup: Windows XP guest OS running inside Parallels 5 on a OS X 10.6.2 host. I have a win32 application that runs in windows that communicates with other programs by sending out keystrokes to the program in focus. I can run this software inside parallels just fine, but I need a way for it to communicate (via keystrokes) with native OS X applications. For instance, the windows software sends out a continuous stream of a's and w's, based on the program input from an external source. On the other side, I have a Mac version of VLC media player with hotkeys set up for a and w for the two functions I would like to manipulate from the windows software. How can I set up a link between the guest and host OS's with Parallels that lets a windows program send keystrokes to a mac program?

If I load App2.xap and App3.xap and instantiate an Application class within one of the other two XAPs. The Application.Current changes to be that new instance. System.Windows.Application obj = Activator.CreateInstance(type) as System.Windows.Application; I don't want the current application to change. I just want to get the merged Resource Dictionaries off the Application class.

  I'm writing my third app, and I already have an app in the App Store, but I still don't get this App ID business. I created the App IDs for my first two applications like this: XXXXXXXXXX.me.cbg.FirstApp YYYYYYYYYY.me.cbg.SecondApp but then Apple introduced the App ID wizard, which I used to create the App ID and provisioning profiles for my third application: ZZZZZZZZZZ.* So my question is: What is the "proper" way of creating App IDs for three completely independent apps? Should I use the XXXXXXXXXX.* format or XXXXXXXXXX.me.cbg.*? Should I create three different App IDs, or just one wildcard ID?

• Do programmable Ethernet devices (think onboard CPU) really exist?

  I've heard from various people that programmable Ethernet cards exist and are easily available. However I have yet to be able to track down one of these mythical devices so I'm wondering if they're just that - a myth. Such a programmable card has a gigabit Ethernet interface, has a programmable CPU and connects to the host system via PCI Express. The problem area these cards address are low latency network applications where the card itself does the work and "reports back" to the operating system. Basically the card acts as a co-processor and handles all the low latency requirements on the card, thus avoiding the issues of writing low latency code in user-land - think 0.4ms - 0.5ms response times. So my question is, do these cards really exist and if so, where can I get my hands on one?

• Haskell UI framework?

  Is there, by chance, and emerging Haskell UI framework for Windows? I recently took up looking over the language, and from what I see, it would be great little "one-off" applications (elaborate scripts). However, without a good UI framework I can't see it getting in under the smoke and mirrors of the more obvious contenders. I've read that there are many frameworks, but none are full-featured. I'm just wondering if this is something that's on the rise, or is it simply too difficult to get enough developers going in the same direction with one?

• How to Print reports in Silverlight 4

  I am wondering if there is anything built in to Silverlight, or possibly c# to allow for printing reports? I'd be happy with any number of methods: exporting files to a pdf format and printing from there, exporting as a text document of some sort and printing from there, or just simply showing the print dialog from the web application itself. I know there are ways to do this in C#, but the c# code-behind is different for many things in Silverlight applications and I can't seem to find anything that will work. So if anyone has any ideas on things I could try it would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

• Why doesn't my ClickOnce deployment pick up the latest changes to the application?

  I have a WinForms app which is deployed to a local network drive (as 'Online Only') via ClickOnce. This has been working fine but today I made some changes to the application and attempted to ClickOnce deploy it to a separate network location (to use as a test system) rather than the current production location. ClickOnce publishes successfully, with no errors, to the correct location but only publishes the pre-change version; i.e. none of my changes are visible: the version number is the old version number and the displayed release date is the last production release back in 2009. What do I have to do to get this to publish correctly? I've used a similar approach on other applications with no such issues.

  I work with Apache, PHP, and MySQL for web development and local applications. For the past couple of years I have slowly been learning C++ and want to build an application this summer. Specifically, I want to make a "library" application in which I can store information about the books, CDs, and records that I own. I know this type of app exists, but I want to learn C++ and this seems like a good way to go about it. Here are a few questions: Is it possible to create a stand-alone application that does not require a database for storing data? If the answer to #1 above is "yes", is it a good idea to do this for an application that could potentially need to manage a lot of data?   Hi, I have started learning Ruby for the past 2,3 weeks and I have come up with some findings on the language. Can someone please validate these points. Implemented in many other high level languages such as C, Java, .Net etc., Is slow for the obvious reason that it cannot beat any of the already known high level languages. Should never be compared with any other high level language. Not suitable for large applications. Completely open source and is in a budding state. Has a framework called Rails which claims that it would be good for Agile development Community out there is getting better day by day and finding help immediately should not be a problem as time goes by. Has significant changes between releases which many developers wont welcome right away. Running time cannot be comprehensively estimated since the language has several underlying implementation in several languages. Books are always outdated by the time when you finish them. Thanks.

  How would I draw something on the screen ? not the console window but the entire screen, preferably with the console minimised. Also, would it show up on a printscreen ? What I want to do is create something like a layer on top of the screen that only me and my aplication are aware of yet still be able to use aplications as usual. • Simple performance testing tool in C#?

  Hi, At first -I need to do it as my university project so I am not interested in using existing tools. I would like to know whether it is even possible to write a very simple tool that I could use for performance testing of web applications. It would only record actions (I do not know, maybe just packet sniffering?) and then replay. However I have basic idea (record packets on port 80 and sending them again), I do not know how to measure time for each transaction as they are not differentiated. • Changing a project's files based on solution in Visual Studio 2008

  In one C# solution I have several projects that share a CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file, so that certain assembly attributes are shared across all projects. This works fine so long as I only have one CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file. However I have several solutions (applications) which use these projects, and each solution has its own version of CommonAssemblyInfo.cs. How can I make the projects use a different CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file depending on which solution they are in? In the end I want my assemblies to have attributes specific to the solution they were compiled from. I don't think I can make them files Solution files because they can't all be in the same directory with the same filename. I can't use pre-build events because I don't have a particular project which is always built first. I would prefer not to use a build script because I would like to be able to build and run the solutions through the Visual Studio environment.

Here's my idea: Students which want to try out their self-written data structures need to: mark the type of their data structures using some sort of marker annotation e.g. @List public class MyList { ... } so that I know how to represent the data structure need to provide an iterator so that I can retrieve the elements in the right order need to annotate methods for insertion and removal, e.g. @add public boolean insert(E e) { ... } so that I can "bind" that method to some button. Do similar applications exist? I googled a little bit around but didn't find anything like that.

  Hello, I've got some python code in a library that attempts to load a simple value from a module that will exist for the applications that use this library from somemodule import simplevalue Normally, the application that uses the library will have the module file and everything works fine. However, in the unit tests for this library the module does not exist. I know that I can create a temporary file and add that file to my path at runtime, but I was curious if there is a way in python to load something in to memory that would allow the above import to work. This is more of a curiosity, saying "add the module to your test path" is not helpful :P

• MonthCalendar control selection range with EnableVisualStyles?

  I'm using the MonthCalendar control and want to programmatically select a date range. When I do so the control doesn't paint properly if Application.EnableVisualStyles() has been called. This is a known issue according to MSDN. Using the MonthCalendar with visual styles enabled will cause a selection range for the MonthCalendar control to not paint correctly (from: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.forms.monthcalendar.aspx) Is there really no fix for this other than not calling EnableVisualStyles? This seems to make that particular control entirely useless for a range of applications and a rather glaring oversight from my perspective.

• What approach should be suitable for user authentification in simle client/server app

  My previous question was closed so I will be more specific. I need to create an application, desktop one written in C#, that will ask for user credentials and after verification opens the GUI allowing to work with DB (black box for users). It should be used from everywhere, not LAN or SQL domain. I assume I would need to do the following: Create a client and a server applications that will deal with authentification. That would mean a lot of socketing stuff.. Once the user is verified, the client queries would be sent to database (client-server-DB). The server would need to send the DB data sets back to the client. As you can see, this is just my guess but I have no idea whether its too complicated or completely wrong. The main thing is that it must be desktop app (not web based one) and accessible from everywhere. I am interested in main points how to design the system and will be extremely grateful for that.
