• Ventrilo sound delay issue in Windows 7

  I've upgraded my machine to Windows 7 Professional (x64) (using format + clean install, not upgrade install). Everything seems to work fine except for Ventrilo. I used to have Vista Business x64 and Ventrilo worked fine there, on the same machine. The issue I am having is that when I am playing a game and using Ventrilo, everything works fine at first, but after a few minutes, I stop hearing anything that people say. If I minimize, I can see the speaker icons lighting up (meaning that people are talking), but I still can't hear anything. The sounds from the game and other OS sounds still play through the speakers just fine. Eventually, I will close ventrilo and then after a few seconds I will start hearing things that people were saying several minutes ago. I start hearing everything that was said, with no "silent time" in between. Note that the sounds keep playing even AFTER the ventrilo process is dead. I've tried using Ventrilo x64 and x86 versions. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this problem?

• Intel Atom overheating in ASUS EEE Box 1501P

  I have had an ASUS EEE Box 1501P for just a little bit over a year. Of course it breaks 2 months after the warranty runs out. http://www.asus.com/Eee/EeeBox_PC/EeeBox_PC_EB1501P/ I have been using the box as a Home Media Center. Running mostly 24/7 often pausing a video overnight. Since last week the fan started running extremely loud. After some digging I found that the Intel Atom CPU in it is overheating and the built-in sensor is reporting temperatures way over 105°C. This got me worried, so I took the unit apart. Completely vacuumed the heat sink, oiled the fan, but the unit is still showing the same behaviour. After turning it on and just observing the hardware monitor in the BIOS the temperature slowly rises from 40°C to over 95°C in appx 5 min. I am running the newest BIOS and a lightweight Linux OPENELEC OS with XBMC on it. Now I am wondering if it could be a faulty heat sensor in the Atom. Recommended running temperature is up to 85°C, but I have not detected any performance hits when running at the above mentioned 105°C and there seem to be no software faults. How can an Atom with an attached heat sink and a fan running at full capacity even get this hot in the first place at 0 load? Aren't those things designed to generate virtually no heat? Could it be a faulty heat sensor? What shall I try to fix this? I would prefer not to damage the CPU, since it is hard fused into the motherboard and cannot be replaced. I could remove the heat pipe/heat sink, but it is getting hot, so heat is properly transferring from the CPU to the heat pipe, the fan is running at full capacity, is recently oiled and warm air is making it out of the exhaust. Edit: One more note: The North-bridge (or whatever it is called nowadays) is on the same heat pipe.

• Window 7 image in vmware will allow network connection out but not http

  I am currently trying to create a set of images to deploy on my network, but I've run in to a snag. When I create my own Windows 7 image I can successfully use NAT for connecting to the network but whenever I try to access a webpage I get nothing. To be more specific, All firewalls/iptables are disabled on my host machine, my virtual machine, and my network. I can do lookups and all addresses respond correctly (i'm even using Google's DNS). On the host OS i have full connectivity. On the virtual machine I can ping any device I want and all addresses resolve correctly. Within a browser I cannot reach any page via hostname or IP. I feel almost like port 80 is being blocked but i can't find any reason this would be the case. If anyone has had this occur before, I would love some insight to the problem. I understand this question is a bit out of the norm for stackoverflow, but I've run out of ideas. Thank you for any help you can provide.

• Burn bootable iso image to USB stick using dd: Won't boot (despite USB first in boot sequence)

  I have installed Ubuntu on a Lenovo Thinkpad R500 2732, and I must update the BIOS. On the Lenovo website, I am offered this: BIOS Update Bootable CD for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP - ThinkPad R500 I guess a bootable CD that would do a BIOS update is indeed what I need. (still wondering why it says "Windows" though... if it is bootable should not it be OS-agnostic?) Not wanting to waste a CD, I copied the image to my USB stick: sudo dd if=/home/nico/7yuj40uc.iso of=/dev/sdb1 bs=1M And rebooted, after making sure USB is first in the boot sequence. PROBLEM: It does not boot. Did I forget one step? Details about the iso image (readme): ls -lh 7yuj40uc.iso 25M file 7yuj40uc.iso /home/nico/7yuj40uc.iso: # ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data '7YUJ40US ' (bootable) (Scroll to the right: it says "bootable") UNetbootin does not work because it is not a Linux image. Some people on the Internet advise to copy the content of the ISO and do other steps. This ISO has zero ISO content so it would not work. If I mount the ISO, I can see it contains zero files.

• Error loading operating system: format Windows 7 to Windows XP Service Pack 3

  I saw that there are other questions like mine here. But O also saw that some problems where solved with fixmbr from a Windows 7 recovery console, but that didn't work for me. I bought my laptop with Vista installed and later reformated and used Windows 7. During formatting with Windows 7 I had some problems with my hard drive and found out it was dead so I bought a new one. I wanted to reformat with Windows XP,because Windows 7 is consuming more RAM that it is able handle and I wanted to use it for other programs. So I formatted with Windows XP Service Pack 3 but after first reboot a message appeared: "Error loading operating system" Reading here, I assumed that maybe I had installed it on the wrong partition and maybe having two OS now, so I used fixmbr but it is still not starting up. Anyway I am sure that is not the case of two operating systems. Is there any chance that when the computer designed to work with Vista you would face problems with Windows XP? Like not recognizing a hard drive?

• restoring a failed SBS 2000 box...

  Hi there, I read a post where you had mentioned you have had a PERC card blow up on you in an SBS box... I've got a similar situation where one of my RAID drives failed and then the power supply failed before I could replace the drive... I then replaced the power supply and the failed drive and reconfigured the RAID array. I had a recent full backup of the my Win2k SBS's C: drive stored on my SYmantec backup exec server so I installed win2K server on the c: partition and then once I had that up and running, installed the backup exec agent so as to do a restore of the entire c drive including system state. THis all worked just fine, until I had to reboot. I received an "incorrect drive configuration" error and then it hangs. I figure that likely makes sense becasue I think my RAID array is configured slightly different now in that the partitions may be sizeded ever so slightly differently now than they were before I think... Is there a way I can just restore from my backup BUT maybe exclude some of the registry and hidden boot files it wants to restore so that it is booting with the current configuration now active on that machine - not the pre blow up configuration files? I also read a post that indicated you might have to install the exact same service pack etc... etc.. before attemting a restore but that does not make sense to me being as the entire c drive contents are going to be overwritten by the restore anyway? THe basic OS install is just to be able to get the backup exec agent installed . I can;t understand why one would need to install the exact same SP level. CAn you shed some light on what I might be able to do to get this thing up and running? Thanks,Brad

• CD-ROM Cant Be Accessed After Installing VMware Tools on VMware Server 2.0.2

  Using VMware Server 2.02, I set up a new VM (Windows XP Pro) applied all of the updates, added Windows addons from the install CD, etc... I got it to a stable point and up through that point I was able to access the CD-ROM drive (E: on my host). What I never did before was install "VMware Tools" and since it claims to give better mouse and video support, I gave it a shot. What it does is it places the install package in a virtual CD-ROM drive. I ran the install, no errors and it wants a reboot. I log back in after reboot and pop in the install CD for Microsoft Office 2003 and I receive the message "Please Insert A Disc Into Drive D:". Drive D: would be the next logical drive after the C: drive where I chose to install the OS. The message box sits there and if I click "Cancel", to return to Windows Explorer, the status bar seems to blink ever 1/2 second - as if its polling for a CD-ROM drive or something. No bangs or exclamations in the Device Manager for any hardware. I had taken a snapshot prior to the VMware Tools install and upon restoring it, the CD-ROM is back. I made copies of two other VMs, installed the VMware Tools on those VMs and both experienced the same issues: Windows 2003 Server and Windows 7 (32-bit). Has anyone seen this issue and know of a fix for this? It would be nice to have the better graphics and better mouse control AND use my CD-ROM drive as well! Thank you.

• How to activate Win XP from Windows 7 compatibility mode on MacOS Parallels 5

  I am running Parallels Desktop 5.0.9344 for Mac. I am running Mac OS 10.6.3 10D2094 I have bought a retail copy of Window 7 professional specifically because I need the XP compatibility. Windows 7 is installed and working. I have problems with the XP activation Windows7 'Virtual PC' does not run under Parallels (strange error about Server Execution failed 0x80080005). I have used the Parallels Transporter to convert the "Windows XP Mode Base.vhd" file into a parallels Virtual Machine. This copy of XP now starts normally, however it records itself as unregistered. There was a KEY.txt file in the same directory as the .vhd file; although this file contains a valid-looking activation key, it does not appear to activate the instance of XP. I have also tried to enter the Win7 activation key; this does not work either. I have tried calling the two phone numbers; an automated system asked me to enter 56 digits through the telephone and then accused me of being a pirate. I believe it may be possible to install Win7 via Bootcamp, start WinXP under Virtual PC, activate it and then import this activated .vhd into Parallels; but that seems a long way round, and is far from certain. What can I do to get WinXP running under Mac Parallels Desktop ?

  Hi all, Being completely new in the webhostingcorner I have a few questions on how to implement/setup a webserver for a SaaS application. I'm about to rent my own server for a new product (CMS) I'm launching in two months. Developing the system wasn't that much of wild ride to me, but a correct way to implement it, is. So lets say this is my situation: I want to host 10 websites for 8 clients. There are 6 single sites, and two clients have two websites they can manage with my software. The CMS must be placed on the server too, all clients are connecting to 1 system The database must be placed Depending on the contract a client makes, the client gets some storage. How to measure the used storage over the DB, FileSystem and email Clients may not, in any case be able to somehow get outside their directory, but from the CMS directory the CMS must be able to create files and dirs in a clients directory (for templates, imagegalleries, widgets, etc, etc). I was thinking about something like a dirstructure like this: ./CMS/ [all CMS files] ./Websites/*/ [all websites] My hostingprovider will install updates to the os (CentOS, latest) and the admin panel (Direct Admin). Is there anybody with experience on this topic? Or do you have some thoughts about it? please join the conversation since I'm completely new to this. Ben

• USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting in windows and linux

  I have a problem similar to what is described at "Why is my USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting randomly and often?" except is is happening in both Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu 12/04TLS, fully patched), multiple mice, multiple OSs. It stops responding to input for about 3-5 seconds, then starts responding again. It's more frequent and lasts longer when running games (TF2, L4D, Dishonored, Borderlands 2, and more), but happens when just running the OS as well. I was hoping it was the motherboard so I bought a USB 2.0 PCI card to try that, but it's still happening. I've stripped it down to just the keyboard and mouse (different keyboard too just in case the keyboard was the problem), but it's still happening. All the hardware (mice and keyboards) work fine on other computers. I have literally pulled the mouse and keyboard out and plugged them into another computer (laptop) and re-joined the online game and had no problem with the keyboard and mouse combo that just failed on my gaming rig. Please no driver / Windows or Linux only suggestions, as that wouldn't effect both OSs. edit: known good mice I've brought home are now going bad. I suspect the hardware is messed up (voltage?) and has been frying the mice.

• Mac Security - Which one?

  Hi, Recently I had my credit card cloned. A few hours after shopping at an online store (in which I trust and buy since 2006) I received a call from my bank asking if I recognize a $5,000 debt to a store(?!) called Church of Christ... I'm a Mac user (OS X 10.6.3). I always kept my system updated and I have firewall enabled (in my Mac and in my broadband router), but I decided to adopt some kind of protection. I don't want to rise passionate discussions. Real or not, snake oil or not, I need to have back my peace of mind... I read this and this posts. I selected two software that I think that could help me (both have more features other than just an antivirus). Does someone have feedback about Intego's VirusBarrier X6 or Trendmicro's Smart Surfing? Intego solutions seems to be better, but TrendMicro brand/name is stronger in corporate environment, so their solution should be good. Both solutions have 30 day free trial, but I would like to hear something from you. Any other solution that I should look? TIA, Bob

• USB device goes to "Unknown device" randomly

  We have a kiosk that uses a bio scanner from m2sys (usb device). It scans your palm to recognize you. Every so often, maybe 1-3 times a day, the bio scanner will become an unknown device. We are unable to see any patterns or commonalities. When we unplug and plug it back in, it becomes available again. We have custom software that uses the bio scanner's software to communicate with it. We've added a crap load of logging on everything but there doesn't seem to be any pattern of when the thing shuts off. We have these devices deployed to multiple locations (100+) and they are all seeing the issues but we can not reproduce it here, at the main office. I've evaluated the software and I don't see anything. I'm thinking it's a driver or hardware issue (but we can't reproduce the issues here in the main office) or maybe environmental interference of some sort like from scan guns, automatic doors, microwaves or something else. Any ideas would be welcome. I'm looking for possible causes of the usb device becoming unknown or ways to figure out what the cause is. no other usb devices have this issue, only the scanner We've contacted the manufacturer and they blame our software We're getting help from Microsoft, but they haven't found anything OS is embedded XP http://www.m2sys.com/palm-vein-reader.htm

• How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

  I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere? • Setting up a localhost mail server on Mac OSX

  I asked this over on stackoverflow. They pointed me here. I would love to be able to test php webapps that require emailing registration info etc. on my mac. I downloaded a version of CommuniGate Pro. I need to mail either to an account inside or outside (whichever is best) of the localhost. Again this would be used for testing purposes to verify and debug my code prior to uploading to a hosting service. Any ideas, help and/or examples would be very much appreciated. If it would be easier I could go over to Windows XP. That would just mean setting up wamp and transfering my files over from the mac side via dropbox. I got the local mailserver to work so I can send emails between accounts. However, I cannot seem to get the php code to work. I know that I am missing something. I see where this has been asked before. I want to add that I am using xampp. In Mac OS 10.6.8. • Setting up a dualboot by installing cloned partitions using clonezilla

  I'm trying to setup a dual boot system where I have Windows 7 and Linux Mint. Here's the kicker both are partitions I've saved using Clonzezilla from different places and to make matters worse Linux Mint is formated as a LVM. I need both of these images specifically as windows is a corporate image that I must use and the other is a development image that took me a week to setup. I've gotten it almost all working but my issue is that I can't get clonezilla to not mess up the partition table of Windows when installing Mint or vise-vera. I can use the (-k1 option) which doens't copy the partition table but then I have a unusable partition when it clones and I'm not sure how to fix the partition table. Here's what I'm doing: Using Gparted to make partitions sda1 40GB ntfs (windows), sda2 extended 70GB, sda5 lvm2 pv 69.99 GB (Linux), sda3 500MB (GRUB) Clonezilla windows image into sda1 partition (keeping partition table) Clonezilla linux image into sda5 partition (not recreating partition table) After all that I can boot into windows using the default MBR. I can use rescue-repair cd to reinstall GRUB which will see Windows 7 but I can't get it to see the Linux OS. I'm thinking its because of the sda5 partition but I'm not sure any ideas on what I could do to get this working or where I might be going wrong. If there is any additional detail you need please let me know and I'll edit as this is a lot.

Given that an important part of security is keeping things updated, we don't want to host these projects on our Plesk-powered dedicated servers that currently host lots of our other client's websites. Our goal is to find a host where we can deploy isolated instances (be these slices, virtual servers, grid servers, etc) for each individual (or groups of 2-3) web sites as we need them. These instances would be completely separate, so that if one web site were hacked it would not impact any other site. Typical hosting requirements: Linux Apache PHP 5 MySQL Supports Drupal Ability to setup a cron task (but we don't need SSH access) Daily backups Virtualized/cloud hosting (we want to avoid shared) Pricing per site is around $25/month OS is patched automatically Some options we have considered but won't work: MediaTemple: Two major data center-wide security incidents and recent downtime foster doubt about this host's technical ability. Slicehost: This would require us to manage the entire server, which we don't want to do. Rackspace Cloud Sites (formerly Mosso): No backup options. Do you have any recommended hosting options for given these requirements?

• Windows XP Language, explorer.exe

  Hi, I was given by my company a laptop with Windows XP Professional in Spanish. I would like to translate it to English, since I really DISLIKE to use localized versions of programs. I have read about Windows MUI packs, however you MUST have Windows XP Pro in English in order to translate it to other language, you can't translate it TO English from other language. Since reinstalling the OS using a Win XP CD in english is not an option (don't have the license nor the CD, and don't have domain privileges to rejoin my computer to the domain), I was wondering what are the essential files that contain localized strings of text. I was doing some research, and apparently explorer.exe has many of the Windows Error Messages and other strings. Will replacing my original explorer.exe with one from Windows XP in English be enough (and work) for having a "basic" english version of windows? Im mainly interested in having error messages, start menu, and the control panel in english. Also, does it HAVE to be the same version as the Service Pack im running? Besides explorer.exe are there any other essential files that i should try to get and replace? Do you see any "dangers" in replacing this files with english version ones? • FreeNAS AFP Doesn't Authenticate

  I just set up a FreeNAS 8.0.3 server and am trying to use its AFP (Netatalk) service to access it via a Mac OS X Lion system. I created the ZFS volume, set its permissions to include my user in its owner group (and set group write permissions), created an AFP share with AFP3 and told that share to "allow" @uninet (my group). I have a user on the server named tbutler, matching the user on my Mac. I can see the server, "Beatrice," in Finder. When I try to login in Finder using "Connect As...," the user "tbutler" and the proper password, I am returned to the main Finder window with the black bar now saying "Connection Failed."   When I try to open a DMG file I get this: I'll just transcript the image: There may be a problem with this disk image. Are you sure you want to open it? Opening this disk image may make your computer less secure or cause other problems. What does that mean in fact? What's really wrong with it, and what kind of problem can it cause just by mounting? Someone said: When you download a file in Leopard (and Snow Leopard), it's marked as a quarantined file. This occurs by the OS adding an attribute to the file, tagging where it came from (such as "downloaded by Safari"). As a new part of Snow Leopard, files which are tagged with the quarantine attribute also have integrity checked by fsck, and if that verify fails you will see the message you described, triggered by an unused node in the disc image. But really, I didn't get that. What's quarantine? I've just downloaded a file here on SL, tried to open, and got that warning. Apple have a say about quarantine files, and they seem to work the same on Leopards. Plus I have got that file using Google Chrome while that feature seems to work just with Safari.

• Protocol to mount fat32 network filesystem on Linux with ability to lock files ( not advisory locks

  I have a fat32 filesystem sitting on a NAS storage device (nslu2) that I need to mount on my Ubuntu system. I've tried Samba and NFS mounts, but both don't seem to support proper locking. More specifically, I am unable to save files to the mounted drive through GNUcash, KeepassX etc, which makes the share fairly useless. Is there a protocol that allows me to achieve this ? Note that the NAS storage device is running a linux OS so I can run pretty much any protocol that has a linux implementation. The only option I'm not looking for is to reformat the partition to ext3, which I'm not able to do due to other constraints. Alternatively, has anyone managed proper locking of a fat32 system over the network using Samba ? Or, is advisory locking the best you get with a network-mounted fat32 file system ? I've thought of trying sshfs but I've not found any indication that this will solve my problem. Edit: Okay, maybe I can reformat the drive, but to any file system except ext3. The "unslung" nslu2 doesn't like more than one ext3 drive, and I already have one attached. So any solution that involves reformatting the drive to ntfs, hfs etc is fine, as long as I can mount it on linux and lock files.

• Why are folders disappearing in Windows XP?

  I am researching a problem for a friend, and unfortunatly do not have direct access to his computer. I've tried to gather as much information as possible and I have researched it on various websites. I've not found anyone having the same problem my friend is having. So here goes: He has a media server in his home running Microsoft Windows XP. It has 3 drives, 1 for the OS and 2 for mass storage. Not long ago he went to access one of the mass storage media drives and it was empty, except for a single folder. His first assumption was that his roommate had deleted everything on the drive (excluding the remaining folder). He then checked the properties of the drive and it was still saying that the hard drive was nearly full. I told him to check the recycling bin, thinking that whoever deleted them didn't clear them from recycling and that they were still taking up space on the drive. My friend said the recycling bin was empty. So we have a drive that the Windows file management system says is empty (again except for the remaining folder), but the properties of the drive say it's mostly full. Now it gets weirder My friend tried to create a new folder on this drive and it auto-named itself "New Folder(1)" which means that it recognizes there is already a "New Folder" in that directory. He tried to rename it to a name that he KNEW was there previsouly, and Windows wouldn't allow it because it was a duplicate folder name. SO now it seems the folders are there, but not displaying in Windows Explorer. Both of us have no idea why this is occuring, why the folders vanished, why the one remaining folder didn't vanish, or how to make them visable again. Anyone else ever experience this? I can get more details if needed.

• 32 core (each physical core) 2.2 GhZ or 12 core (6 physical cores) 3.0GHZ?

  I am working on a multithreaded application (Forex trading app built on C#) and had the client upgrade from the 12 core 3.0GHZ machine (Intel) to a 32 core 2.2 Ghz machine (AMD). The PassMark benchmark results were significantly higher when using multicores doing Integer, Floating and other calculations while for a single core calculation it was a bit slower than the pack (others that were being compared to with similar config as the 12 core one). Oh it also comes with 64 GB RAM (4 times as the other one) and a much faster SSD. So after configuring and running the application on that machine, not only did it not perform as well, it was significantly slower. We're talking about 30seconds - 1 minute slower on an app that usually completes processing within 5-20 secs. The application uses MAX DEGREE of PARALLELISM (TPL) which I've tried setting to number of cores and also half of that. I've also tried running single threaded and without setting any limits in parallel threading. While it may be the hardware has some issues, I am wondering if the CPU processing speed is the issue. I can overclock to 3.0 GHZ. But is that even a good idea? • Limiting bandwith on an Windows 7 machine

  I need to limit the bandwidth on my Windows 7 x64 machine. In the past (on XP) I've been able to use NetLimiter for similar tasks. However for some reason I can't get it to work anymore. For lower limits the bandwidth tests are able to exceed the limit by 10-50%; higher limits seem to be ignored completely and the bandwidth tests report download speeds of over 10 times the speed I set. I'm using speedtest.net and some similar service from my ISP for these tests. Anyway, I don't necessarily need a program as complex as NetLimiter since I only need to throttle my machine's bandwidth, not a specific program's. In case you are wondering why in the world I'd want to cripple my Internet speed, there is a funny story behind this. Long story short, my modem gets random disconnects. Tech support comes in, says my Internet speed is abnormally high and I must be using some tools to somehow make it go faster than it's supposed to and this messes up my modem. I check the connection with another computer and it seems that my PC is the only one in my network that gets abnormal speeds. I reinstall my OS, speed looks normal at first, after I install the batch of 50 or so updates, it goes back to abnormally high speeds and the disconnect problems are not solved. Now I don't have a clue if the explanation the tech team gave me was just a strategy to lay the blame on someone else, but I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and see what happens if I really reduce my speed to their specification. Any help appreciated.

• WD my cloud 4th is Super Slow

  I am using a WD my cloud 4Tb and I have read other posts about users complaining about getting only 10Mb per second. My problem is that I am getting about 100kb/s to transfer a 125gb iPhoto library. Estimated time is 11 days to transfer this file. This is unacceptable. On the back of the WD cloud I am getting a solid green light and from what I read this means that I am on a gigabyte network. I have mac book pro running Mac OS Mavericks. I have tried 4 different cables and turned off my router firewall. I don't run anti-virus nor any firewall on the mac. Other things I have checked: direct connection to both router and WD cloud device. Tried wireless but it is even slower. Previously I was able to transfer a 55Gb iPhoto library in 14 hours which I felt was acceptable. I figured it would take approximately double the time to transfer the 125gb file but 11 days is ridiculous. Any other suggestions? Anything else I can check (how to check it) what is the bottle neck?
