  • What are some of the practical cons to using ASMX webservices?

    Hello, at my workplace we are about to start a big project. My boss (a programmer, this is a startup) wishes to use ASMX webservices for this purpose. I do not want to start off a new program using deprecated technology and would like to show him this. I dislike WCF at this moment because it has such an extreme learning curve, but I'd rather learn it than use an unsupported technology. The problem I'm having is that I can not find any practical list of cons and downfalls when compared to WCF so that I can convince my boss to not use them. And saying "it's not as powerful" is not an adequate explanation. What exactly can it not do that we may need it to do for a webservice that is not meant to be shared externally? (as in, we don't support third-parties using our webservices unless they are using one of our clients. )

  • chrome extension login security with iframe

    I should note, I'm not a chrome extension expert. However, I'm looking for some advice or high level solution to a security concern I have with my chrome extension. I've searched quite a bit but can't seem to find a concrete answer. The situation I have a chrome extension that needs to have the user login to our backend server. However, it was decided for design reasons that the default chrome popup balloon was undesirable. Thus I've used a modal dialog and jquery to make a styled popup that is injected with content scripts. Hence, the popup is injected into the DOM o the page you are visiting. The Problem Everything works, however now that I need to implement login functionality I've noticed a vulnerability: If the site we've injected our popup into knows the password fields ID they could run a script to continuously monitor the password and username field and store that data. Call me paranoid, but I see it as a risk. In fact,I wrote a mockup attack site that can correctly pull the user and password when entered into the given fields. My devised solution I took a look at some other chrome extensions, like Buffer, and noticed what they do is load their popup from their website and, instead, embed an iFrame which contains the popup in it. The popup would interact with the server inside the iframe. My understanding is iframes are subject to same-origin scripting policies as other websites, but I may be mistaken. As such, would doing the same thing be secure? TLDR To simplify, if I embedded an https login form from our server into a given DOM, via a chrome extension, are there security concerns to password sniffing? If this is not the best way to deal with chrome extension logins, do you have suggestions with what is? Perhaps there is a way to declare text fields that javascript can simply not interact with?   • Running a Windows Forms app. from a service.

    Hi, I have a strange application in that for development and testing I need a windows forms application so that I can monitor what it is doing. For production, the application will be started from a service and no visible UI is needed. I dont really want to re-write the app. once it is completed into a console app so I would like to leave it as it but start it from the service. My question is will this application work fine from a service? At the moment it has UI elements and I have been able to successfully start the application from a service using the Process class (System.Diagnostics). Could anything go wrong with this approach?

    How is it possible for a script within an <iframe> to have any notion of the page containing it? Can a script in the frame access any context outside of it? What about cross-domain? Up until now I believed an <iframe> is completely agnostic to the containing page, but I have seen an example which contradicts this belief. What exactly can and can't be done from within an <iframe> with respect to the containing page?

  • File transfer eating alot of CPU

    I'm trying to transfer a file over a IHttpHandler, the code is pretty simple. However when i start a single transfer it uses about 20% of the CPU. If i were to scale this to 20 simultaneous transfers the CPU is very high.   • Getting rid of the Expires node (xml) in the WS security header

  • Send document to printer from web page

    I have a webpage that activates a print job on a printer. This works in the localhost environment but does not work when the application is deployed to the webserver. I'm using the PrintDocument class from the .net System.Drawing.Print namespace. I'm now assuming the printer has to be available to the application on the remote server?   • Website Sitemaps and <priority>, is it working?

    Hi, My "Privacy Policy" page is seen more important by Google than other really more important pages on my website. I'm currently creating a script to generate a sitemap, should I bother with the priority? How do you effectively assign priorities to pages? I consider one of my page important but the page have less content than another one less important to my eyes... but maybe Google bot will see it the other way around. If my degree of "importantness" differs from the one of Google, will I get penalized on the ranking for a particular page? Thank you for sharing your black art with us :P

    I'm using BITS to make requests to a ASP.NET MVC controller method named Source that returns a FileResult. I know the type FilePathResult uses HttpResponse.TransmitFile, but I don't know if HttpResponse.TransmitFile actually writes the file to the response stream regardless of the request type. My question is, does FileResult only include the header information on HEAD requests, or does it transmit the file regardless of the request type? Or, do I have to account for HEAD requests myself?

  • How to add classes for styling to Drupal when using menu_block?

    I'm using the menu_block module in Drupal for my menus. This works very well, but I want my menu items styled as an image menu. This cannot be done nicely with the default settings - the menu items look something like this: <li class="leaf first menu-mlid-199"><a href="/this/is/some/nice/url" title="Homepage">Homepage</a></li> I'm guessing I could used the menu-mlid-199 class to get the styling I want, because it's a unique id of each menu item, but that seems rather ugly to me. Is there any other way to add reasonably named classes to my menu items, e.g. generate them from the page title or url alias? Even just a sequence would seem nicer - like menu-item-1 and so on.

  • Need a Security Scenario for asp.net webservice

    I have developed a .Net 3.5 windows forms application. I also want to design a website that has a webservice with multiple Webmethods to query the database on the host machine. I want the webservice to be called ONLY through my winapp and my website! And I don't want any other people to be able to call and use my webservice but only some people who have access to the windows application that I have developed. I need a good security scenario for this!   • In Netbeans+Ant, how do I avoid wsimport rebuilding web service clients every build?

    I'm on a project where we use NetBeans (6.8). We use several different web services, which we have added as web service references, and Netbeans auto-generates the Ant wsimport scripts for us. Very handy, with one drawback: The web service clients are recompiled every time ant is invoked. This slows down the build process considerably and has caused the number of sword-related injuries, maimings and deaths to skyrocket. Normally, I'd fix this by changing the wsimport element from <wsimport sourcedestdir="${build.generated.dir}/jax-wsCache/PonyService" destdir="${build.generated.dir}/jax-wsCache/PonyService" wsdl="${wsdl-PonyService}" catalog="catalog.xml" verbose="true"/> to <wsimport sourcedestdir="${build.generated.dir}/jax-wsCache/PonyService" destdir="${build.generated.dir}/jax-wsCache/PonyService" wsdl="${wsdl-PonyService}" catalog="catalog.xml" verbose="true"> <produces dir="${build.generated.dir}/jax-wsCache/PonyService" /> </wsimport> But I can't, 'cause this part of the Ant script is auto-generated. If I right-click the PonyService web service reference and select Edit Web Service Attributes ⇒ wsimport options, I can add attributes to the wsimport element, but not child elements. So: How do I add the produces child element to wsimport other than hacking the auto-generated Ant script? Or more generally: How do I make the NetBeans-generated wsimport not recompile the web service clients every time I build?

  • Creating a desktop icon using JWS JNLP for a JavaFX app.

    I am trying to get a custom destop icon to be displayed for my app but for some reason no matter what I do the same default java icon shows up. I have tried everything I can think of and gone and compared my jnlp file with others whose icons seem to work ok. According to everything I have read the following should work fine.   • Running ASP / ASP.NET markup outside of a web application (perhaps with MVC)

    Is there a way to include some aspx/ascx markup in a DLL and use that to generate text dynamically? I really just want to pass a model instance to a view and get the produced html as a string. Similar to what you might do with an XSLT transform, except the transform input is a CLR object rather than an XML document. A second benefit is using the ASP.NET code-behind markup which is known by most team members. One way to achieve this would be to load the MVC view engine in-process and perhaps have it use an ASPX file from a resource. It seems like I could call into just the ViewEngine somehow and have it generate a ViewEngineResult. I don't know ASP.NET MVC well enough though to know what calls to make. I don't think this would be possible with classic ASP or ASP.NET as the control model is so tied to the page model, which doesn't exist in this case. Using something like SparkViewEngine in isolation would be cool too, though not as useful since other team members wouldn't know the syntax. At that point I might as well use XSLT (yes I am looking for a clever way to avoid XSLT).
