• Looking for resources to explain a security risk.

  I've a developer which has given users the ability to download a zip archive which contains an html document which references a relative javascript file and flash document. The flash document accepts as one of it's parameters a url which is embedded in the html document. I believe that this archive is meant to be used as a means to transfer an advertisement to someone who would use the source to display the ad on their site, however the end user appears to want to view it locally. When one opens the html document the flash document is presented and when the user clicks on the flash document it redirects to this embedded url. However, if one extracts the archive on the desktop and opens the html document in a browser and clicks the flash object, nothing observable happens, they will not be redirected to the external url. I believe this is a security risk because one is transferring from the local computer zone to an external zone. I'm trying to determine the best way to explain this security risk in the simplest of terms to a very end user. They simply believe it's "broken" when it's not broken, they're being protected from a known vulnerability. The developer attempted to explain how to copy the files to a local iis instance, which I highly doubt is running on the users machine, and I do not consider this to be a viable explanation.

• Constructing a WeakReference<T> throws COMException

  The following code: IDisposable d = ... new WeakReference<IDisposable>(d); Has started throwing the following exception on SOME machines. What could cause this? System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Unspecified error (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004005 (E_FAIL)) EDIT: the machines that experience the error are running Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Server 2012 and desktop machines running windows 7 work fine. (this is true, but I now think a different issue is the relevant difference... see below). EDIT: as an additional note, this occurred right after updating our codebase to Entity Framework 6.1.1.-beta1. In the above code, The IDisposable is a class which wraps an EF DbContext. EDIT: why the votes to close? EDIT: the stack trace of the failure ends at the WeakReference<T> constructor called in the above code: at System.WeakReference`1..ctor(T target, Boolean trackResurrection) // from here on down it's code we wrote/simple LINQ. • Can't get node.js built on cygwin

  Following the instructions here: https://github.com/ry/node/wiki/Building-node.js-on-Cygwin-(Windows) I've tried installing on two machines, either of which I'd be happy to get up and running. WinXP On 'make', I get: Build failed: -> task failed <err #2>: {task: libv8.a SConstruct -> libv8.a} According to the instructions, this is caused by having $SHELL set to a Windows style path, but I've set it to /bin/bash and get the same error. • AIR File.resolvePath won't work anymore

  Hi all, I'm having a very strange issue, it looks like my application can't create file anymore. It works w/ directories, but the so-many-times-used resolvePath() methods doesn't. Here is what I do : var databaseFileContent : File = new File(File.desktopDirectory.nativePath + "/testing"); databaseFileContent.createDirectory(); databaseFileContent.resolvePath("test"); (Here I'm trying on desktop but that's the same w/ applicationStorageDirectory) When I execute this, it works only for the "testing" folder which is actually created, but my file isn't. I tried to create another application, doing this : trace(File.desktopDirectory.resolvePath("maiswtf.db").exists); trace(File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath("wtf.db").exists); Both are displaying "false". Am I missing something here? I have another application with this code : var databaseFileContent : File = File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath(File.separator + "sitra.db"); When I run this one, it works perfectly! My file is created at /sitra.db! Any hints? I thinks I'm going mad :/ Thanks!

• How do I load PersistentDocuments into the same window

  I want to open NSPersistentDocuments and load them into the same window one at a time. I'm almost there but missing some steps. Hopefully someone can help me. I have a few saved documents on the hard drive. On launch my app opens to an untitled NSPersistentDocument and creates a separate NSWindowController. When I press the button to load file 1 off the hard drive the data appears in the fields but two things are wrong that I can see: 1) changing the data doesn't make the document dirty 2) choosing save updates the persistentstore (I know this because when I open the file again I see the changes) but I get an error: +entityForName: could not locate an NSManagedObjectModel for entity name 'Book' Here's my code which is in the WindowController that was launched initially with the untitled document. This code isn't perfect. For example, I know I should processPendingChanges and save the current doc before I load the new one. • Web Audio API and mobile browsers

  I've run into a problem while implementing sound and music into an HTML game that I'm building. I'm using the Web Audio API, loading all the sound files with XMLHttpRequests and decoding them into an AudioBufferSourceNode with AudioContext.prototype.decodeAudioData(). It looks something like this: var request = new XMLHttpRequest(); request.open("GET", "soundfile.ogg", true); request.responseType = "arraybuffer"; request.onload = function() { context.decodeAudioData(request.response) } request.send(); Everything plays fine, but on mobile the decodeAudioData takes an absurdly long time for the background music. I then tried using AudioContext.prototype.createMediaElementSource() to load the music from an HTML Audio object, since they support streaming and don't have to load the whole file into memory at once. It looked something like this: var audio = new Audio('soundfile.ogg'); var source = context.createMediaElementSource(audio); var mainVolume = context.createGain(); source.connect(mainVolume); mainVolume.connect(context.destination); This loads much faster, but the audio volume isn't affected by the gain node. Works fine on desktop, so I'm assuming this is a bug/limitation of mobile Chrome (testing on Android). Is there actually no good, well-performing way to handle sound on mobile browsers or am just I doing something stupid?

• Limit CPU usage of a process

  I have a service running which periodically checks a folder for a file and then processes it. (Reads it, extracts the data, stores it in sql) So I ran it on a test box and it took a little longer thaan expected. The file had 1.6 million rows, and it was still running after 6 hours (then I went home). The problem is the box it is running on is now absolutely crippled - remote desktop was timing out so I cant even get on it to stop the process, or attach a debugger to see how far through etc. It's solidly using 90%+ CPU, and all other running services or apps are suffering. But it still could be a slow affair, which is fine, I've no problems with it taking a long time as long as its not killing my server.   I am trying to copy the contents of certain folders to another folder using VBScript. The goal is to enumerate a user's AD groups and then copy specific folder content based on those groups. I have code, which is currently not working. • Why Is Apache Giving 403?

  I am getting 403 Errors from Apache when I send too many, 12, synchronous HTTP Posts via a desktop app I am building in XCode / Objective-C. The 12 POST requests are just a few kb each and go out instantly one after the other and the Apache Error Log shows... client denied by server configuration: /the-path/the-file.php Apache 2.0 PHP 5 and I have this same setup working fine on my local machine. The error is coming from a VPS with my host, which runs very fast and smooth and has plenty of resources. To debug I threw a sleep(1); function (stalls script execution by 1 second) into the php file and that fixed it. This makes me think that I am breaking some limit for too many requests for a single IP in a certain amount of time. I have googled and combed PHP ini and Apache configs, but I cannot find what that directive/setting might be. I should mention that the although it varies the first 4 or 5 POSTS usually work then it starts returning the 403 error intermittently after that. Just really acting like its bogging down. Any ideas?

Since I only need to output the data for specific sheets I added an if statement in the process method to test for the specific sheets. • import text file containing line breaks into excel

  I have a plain text file looking like this: "some text containing line breaks" I'm trying to talk excel 2004 (Mac, v.11.5) into opening this file correctly. I'd expect to see only one cell (A1) containing all of the above (without the quotes)... But alas, I can't make it happen, because Excel seems to insist on using the CR's as row delimiters, even if I set the text qualifier to double quote. I was sort of hoping that Excel would understand that those line breaks are part of the value - they are embedded in double quotes which should qualify them as part of the value. So my Excel sheet has 5 rows, which is not what I want. I also tried this Applescript to no avail: tell application "Microsoft Excel" activate open text file filename ¬ "Users:maximiliantyrtania:Desktop:linebreaks" data type delimited ¬ text qualifier text qualifier double quote ¬ field info {{1, text format}} ¬ origin Macintosh with tab end tell If I could tell Excel to use a row delimiter other than CR (or LF), well, I'd be a happy camper, but excel seems to allow the change of the field delimiter only, not the row delimiter. • HTML5 Video Element on iPad doesn't fire onclick?

I can see two "clicked" in the console. But on ipad there is nothing. I have a source filter sending the H.264 NALU flows (MEDIASUBTYPE_AVC1) and it works very well except that the SPS/PPS may be changed after the video is played for a while. The SPS and PPS are appended to the MPEG2VIDEOINFO structure, which is passed in CMediaType::SetFormat method when GetMediaType method is called. and there is another version of GetMediaType which accepts the iPosition parameter. It seems I can use this method to update the SPS / PPS. My question is: What does the iPosition param mean, and how does Decoder Filter know which SPS/PPS are assigned for each NALU sample. • CodeIgniter - Image Validation & Thumbnailing

  I'm currently trying to create a function that validates and creates thumbnails for images on upload - but I'm quite lost on what I'm doing. I'm assuming I'm off on my terminology so I'm not really getting any search results to help point me in the right direction. My playground is a form with 6 upload fields that are required. One of these fields is for a simple 32x32 icon image, another a portrait orientation (most likely) photo, and then 4 standard desktop screenshots -- and I'm using CodeIgniter as my framework. I would like to create a function that validates/thumbnails images, and only have to call it on the validation if at all possible. I know I can achieve this per-image, since the documentation for CI is quite through on this - but to reduce redundancy I'm looking for the better option. Outside of that, I don't even actually understand in full how to manipulate images unless it's just $this-input-post('field') - then calling all functions onto this? I don't know, I'm confused and posting on the actual CI forums has yielded me nothing - so all I'm really looking for is a point in the right direction to understanding what I'm trying to achieve here. This also all might not make any sense, I know it doesn't to me - but I can explain more if needed. Thanks in advance.

• The "correct" way of using multilingual support

  I just began working with ASP.NET and I'm trying to bring with me some coding standards I find healthy. Among such standards there is the multilingual support and the use of resources for easily handling future changes. Back when I used to code desktop applications, every text had to be translated, so it was a common practice to have the language files for every languages I would want to offer to the customers. In those files I would map every single text, from button labels to error messages. In ASP.NET, with the help of Visual Studio, I have the resort of using the IDE to generate such Resource Files (from Tools - Generate Local Resource), but then I would have to fill my webpages with labels - at least that is what I've learned from articles and tutorials. However, such approach looks a bit odd and I'm tempted to guess it doesn't smell that good as well. Now to the question: 1) Should I keep every single text in my website as labels and manage its contents in the resource files? It looks/feels odd specially when considering a text with several paragraphs. 2) Whenever I add/remove something, e.g.: a button, to an aspx file I would have to add it to the resource file as well, because generating the resource file again would simply override all my previous changes to it. That doesn't feel like a reusable code at all for me. Any comment suggestion on this one? Perhaps I got it all wrong from tutorials as it doesn't seem like a standardized matter - specially if it required recompiling the entire application whenever some change has to be done.

• How to send KeyEvents through an input method service to a Dialog, or a Spinner menu?

  I'm trying to implement an input method service that receives intents sent by a remote client, and in response to those sends an appropriate KeyEvent. I'm using in the input method service this method private void keyDownUp(int keyEventCode) { getCurrentInputConnection().sendKeyEvent( new KeyEvent(KeyEvent.ACTION_DOWN, keyEventCode)); getCurrentInputConnection().sendKeyEvent( new KeyEvent(KeyEvent.ACTION_UP, keyEventCode)); } to send KeyEvents as in the Simple Sofykeyboard Sample, and it works in the home, in Activities... but it doesn't works when a Dialog or the menu of a Spinner is in foreground. The events is sent to the parent activity behind the Dialog. Is there any way to send keys and control the device like using the hardware keys from an input method? Better explanation on what I'm trying to do: I am kind of writng an Input Method that allows to control the device from remote. I write in a client (a java application on my desktop pc) a command (for example "UP"), a server on the device with sendBroadcast() sends the intent with the information, and a receiver in the input method gets it and call keyDownUp with the keycode of the DPAD_UP key. It generally works, but when I go to an app that shows a dialog, the keyDownUp method don't sends the key event to the dialog, for example for select the yes or not buttons, but it keeps to control the activty behind the Dialog.

• Jython & Mysql - what is the current practice for connection?

• Am I a dinosaur programmer?

  I have been a professional programmer for more than 30 years, and have chosen a career path involving hands-on programming. Programming is something that I love, and I take great pride in the fact that I have continued to keep up to date with current technology. Projects on which I have worked include large enterprise projects as well as smaller desktop programs. The problem I am facing is that I do not have any web-based experience other than some web services. Most of the jobs now available have some web component. I have now been out of work for a year and a half, and have been keeping busy by studying technology that will bridge that gap: CSS, Java Script, JQuery, and Ruby on Rails; AJAX is next. Hiring managers give no consideration whatsoever to the studying that I have been doing. I know that I cannot compete at a senior software level, but companies will not hire someone with my experience at a more junior level. Is there any way to break out of this Catch 22?

  Java's extensive libraries and tool support are appealing, but I've never tried developing with it because most Java applications I've used have been extremely buggy. This has me puzzled, because I hear that Java is the dominant platform for enterprise development. Maybe it's fine for server-side stuff but not desktop applications. I'm not talking about things like the long compile/startup times or the random latencies due to garbage collection. This is about things just going wrong. Some of the most common problems I see are: corrupted icons corrupted fonts, in menus usually and editing areas sometimes inaccurate framing of GUI elements dialogs sometimes popping up blank Maybe the problems are mostly with Swing. I've rarely used a Java application long enough to find deeper issues. I can think of a few possible explanations for what I've experienced: It's possible to write stable apps with Java, just harder. Java apps are always buggy and enterprise users just put up with it. Server-side apps are fine because just Swing is buggy. I'm living under a curse and need the services of a good witchdoctor.

• SQL Compact performance on device

  My SQL Compact database is very simple, with just three tables and a single index on one of the tables (the table with 200k rows; the other two have less than a hundred each). The first time the .sdf file is used by my Compact Framework application on the target Windows Mobile device, the system hangs for well over a minute while "something" is done to the database: when deployed, the DB is 17 megabytes, and after this first usage, it balloons to 24 megs. All subsequent usage is pretty fast, so I'm assuming there's some sort of initialization / index building going on during this first usage. I'd rather not subject the user to this delay, so I'm wondering what this initialization process is and whether it can be performed before deployment. For now, I've copied the "initialized" database back to my desktop for use in the setup project, but I'd really like to have a better answer / solution. I've tried "full compact / repair" in the VS Database Properties dialog, but this made no difference. Any ideas? For the record, I should add that the database is only read from by the device application -- no modifications are made by that code.

• Android newbie installing Eclipse, having issues....

  I am a web developer, new to app development and Java/Android. I am about to follow some tutorials to get started learning but I'm running into a wall. The Android dev site says the recommended way to build Android apps is in Java using the Eclipse plug in. So I downloaded Eclipse Classic and unzipped it on to get this error: "A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run Eclipse. No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: /Users//Desktop/eclipse/Eclipse.app/Contents/MacOS/jre/bin/java java in your current PATH" Any idea what the issue is and how I can fix it? Again, newbie to java, jre, android, so I apologize if this question has already been asked. In my research I've discovered that most of the posts or solutions I've found are tough for me to follow. There's always a few unclear items that are probably prohibiting me from getting the answer I need. So I'm hoping someone can walk me through installing or configuring whatever I need to regarding Java so I can continue installing Eclipse and begin learning. I should probably note that I'm on Mac OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard. Please let me know if you need any other info. Thanks so much in advance for any and all help!!!

• User switching without logging off

  We need to switch users without logging off so we can remotely administrate a PC running with a limited user that will disconnect from the VPN if the user logs off. Because we block CTRL-ALT-DEL the PC effectively hangs until it is powered off. Does anyone know how to stop this from happening so we can change users without the PC hanging when they log off?

• Cross-platform HTML application options

  I'd like to develop a stand-alone desktop application targeting Windows (XP through 7) and Mac (Tiger through Snow Leopard), and if possible iPhone and Android. In order to make it all work with as much common code as possible (and because it's the only thing I'm good at), I'd like to handle the main logic with HTML and JS. Using Adobe AIR is a possibility. And I think I can do this with various application wrappers, using .NET for Windows XP, Objective C for iPhone, Java for Android and native "widget" platform support for Mac and Windows Vista & 7 (though I'd like to keep the widget in the foreground, so the Mac dashboard isn't ideal). Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? The two sticking points are: I'll certainly need some form of persistent storage (cookies perhaps) to keep state between sessions I'll also probably need access to remote data files, so if I use AJAX and the hosting HTML file resides on the device, it will need to be able to do cross-domain requests. I've done this on the iPhone without any problems, but I'd be surprised if this were possible on other platforms. For me, Android and iPhone will be the easiest to handle, and it looks like I can use Adobe AIR to handle the rest. But I wanted to know if there are any other alternatives. Does anyone have any suggesions?

• can I put my sqlite connection and cursor in a function?

  I was thinking I'd try to make my sqlite db connection a function instead of copy/pasting the ~6 lines needed to connect and execute a query all over the place. I'd like to make it versatile so I can use the same function for create/select/insert/etc... Below is what I have tried. The 'INSERT' and 'CREATE TABLE' queries are working, but if I do a 'SELECT' query, how can I work with the values it fetches outside of the function? Usually I'd like to print the values it fetches and also do other things with them. When I do it like below I get an error Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Users\steini\Desktop\py\database\test3.py", line 15, in <module> for row in connection('testdb45.db', "select * from users"): ProgrammingError: Cannot operate on a closed database. So I guess the connection needs to be open so I can get the values from the cursor, but I need to close it so the file isn't always locked.
