• Getting started with the vCenter Web Client Administration tool

  I am trying to access a newly vCenter. The documentation clearly mentions to access the web-admin through: https://localhost:9443/admin-app but since I don't have a windows OS built under the vCenter (I use the vCenter Appliance) There is no localhost to use. If I try with the host IP I get the error: This PDF explains to install IIS component - But it's ESX 4 - and also not talking about appliance. so, a simple question: how can I access the web-app admin tool? also found a similar question on vmware forum. But I can't understand the solution/if any.

• pdflush hanging on Amazon EBS drives when using multi-GB files - any workaround?

  Hello, When I run gunzip on a 1.7GB file (which generates an 8GB file) on an EBS volume, pdflush freezes after gunzip runs and the CPU hangs indefinitely at 100% IO Wait. Here's the output from 'ps aux | grep pdflush'. Note the D status root 87 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? D 06:18 0:00 pdflush root 88 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? D 06:18 0:00 pdflush The only solution is to kill the pdflush processes. The processes don't die immediately either. This problem is repeatable and happens with new instances. I'm running 2xlarge instances and I have way more RAM free than is being used (i.e. /proc/meminfo shows 20+GB MemFree) Has anyone found a workaround to this problem in the past? • mac & windows backup solutions - Offsite Backups

  Im looking for some advice on a system Im looking to impliment within our company, but so far I have not found an adequate solution too. I need to provide my users with a way to backup there laptops whilst in the office and if possible offsite as well, we have a mixture of Windows & Mac laptops so software should ideally be multi platform. This is the first time i am attempting to-do something like this as we normally charge the users with responsibility for their backups. I have ruled out most of the services like dropbox, sugarsync (unless one exists that does this) as whilst they does exactly what I want it does not give me any control over restoring / recovering data in the event of the user being unavailable, as it requires their account password to access data.

• Interesting fault attempting to install Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 OR 13.10 on MSI GS70 2OD-001US

  Attempting to install Ubuntu on an MSI GS70 2OD-001US notebook pre-installed with Windows 8. For the record this is what I have attempted: All cases were attempted with Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 AND 13.10 images via USB drives Case 1 - Attempt no changes and simply boot from USB Result: It seems to want to work initially. The Ubuntu logo pops up and the dots start moving. After a few seconds the dots freeze and this screen is shown: http://i.imgur.com/C7pyMRk.jpg Case 2 - Start playing with BIOS - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - In BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting LEGACY Result: Brought to a black screen with a - blinking at me. Case 3 - Alternating BIOS settings - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - in BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting UEFI with CSM Result: Brought to a black screen no other indication of change. It's pretty frustrating to feel locked out of a laptop that I have paid good money for, I'm sure I am not alone in that case. It does however appear that there has been some success, so I am hopeful that someone might be able to help me. FYI: Dual booting is not necessary for me, if that helps at all... I'm not sure if this is a reasonable option, but if I completely wipe clean the hdds, no particle of Windows at all, would this still be a problem? Also would opening up the laptop and replacing the HDDS with brand new ones be a solution as well? Thanks for any input or suggestions.

  This question is intended to be the inverse of Replace Symbolic Links with Files, but for windows. I have started running out of space on my SSD drive, and I found that about 12% of used space is in my installer folder (holds the .msi files for all the programs that I have installed) I am looking for two things: A way to move this (or any) folder via symlink. Ideally, some powershell function that I could use to just designate a folder, a destination, and the symlink would be created in the original (pointing to the destination) In this particular case, a registry change that would allow the location to be move would also be helpful, but I would still prefer solution 1. How can this be done?

  We have a system that uses Path.GetTempFile and Path.GetTempPath calls to work with temporary files fairly frequently. This system also runs as the "Network Service" user. We're finding that we're running out of room on the C drive (for other issues, our temp files are cleaned up correctly) and would like to be able to move the temp directory to a different drive. The easiest solution to this seems to be to change the TMP or TEMP environment variables for the Network Service user, but I only seem to be able to set my own user or the "system" variables that are overwritten by the Network Service user profile. How do I set these variables for the Network Service user?

• Create PDF with internal hyperlinks

  I have an Excel workbook with an index page containing a series of images, that are each hyperlinked to different worksheets. Can anybody suggest how I can publish this to PDF so that the hyperlinks work in the PDF? When I publish or use PDF Factory, the hyperlinks are not preserved (and bookmarks aren't created for that matter either). I would prefer to do this with inbuilt functionality or free tools, though any suggestions welcome. Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be with Excel. Publishing from powerpoint would be almost as good, and failing that, any easy solution which allows me to create a PDF containing clickable images that takes one to internal bookmarks might also be a workaround.

• Resource Acquisition is Initialization in C#

  Resource Acquisition Is Initialization (RAII) is a pattern I grew to love when working in C++.  It is perfectly suited for resource management such as matching all those pesky new's and delete's.  One of my goals was to limit the explicit deallocation statements I had to write.  Often these statements became victims of run-time control flow changes (i.e. exceptions, unhappy path) or development-time code refactoring. The beauty of RAII is realized by tying your resource creation (acquisition) to the construction (initialization) of a class instance.  Then bind the resource deallocation to the destruction of that instance.  That is well and good in a language with strong destructor semantics like C++, but languages like C# that run on garbage-collecting runtimes don't provide the same instance lifetime guarantees. • How to configure a static wildcard subdomain with dnsmasq.

  I have a network behind a NAT with a few machines. The machines are: router - NAT, dnsmasq, forwarding - directly connected to the inet server - which runs ssh, www and some other stuff clients - which do stuff on server I also have mydomain.com. server.mydomain.com is pointing to my connection's IP (single IP), which is the router, which forwards ports to server. Server, has a httpd running, which serves different sites based on vhosts. So I have site1.server.mydomain.com, site2.. The problem is that all the traffic is going thru the router, and when I check logs I always see the router's IP for everything (so it's hard to see who is running the script with the while(1)). I would just ServerAlias site1.server.local, but most of the sites have a root URL saved somewhere on top of which other URLs are built, so I can't do that. The solution for me would be telling dnsmasq somehow to answer to *.mydomain.com with server's IP. Is this possible somehow?

I am trying to take backup using windows server backup feature and it fails with following error in eventlog The backup operation that started at '?2009?-?08?-?22T18:42:14.123000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved. • Windows 7 Remote Desktop with dual monitors wont wake up.

  I run Windows 7 64bit with dual monitors at work. If i connect from home using remote desktop, the next morning i cannot wake up the monitors. The computer seems to be fine (i can connect again from another pc using remote desktop) but monitor will stay blank. I've tried unplugging the monitors and reconnecting them but still frustrating. • File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service won't install

  Hi all, Problem description: -I'm running Windows Server 2003 and I'm trying to install the FTP service following this procedure: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323384 -At step 7 of the above procedure I provide Windows Small Business Server 2003 disc1 and the installation completes successfully (note: the installer looks for 'ftpctrs2.dll' but the disk contains 'FTPCTRS2.DL_' and seems happy with it as per allowed file types). -However the installation silently fails because if I go back to the list of windows components, FTP is still unchecked, and if I open IIS, the FTP sites section is missing. Question: -How can I force the installation of FTP? • How can I get my monitor's maximum resolution without the proprietary AMD graphic driver installed?

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04. I have an AMD Radeon 5570 HD graphic card. Actually, the default open source REDWOOD drivers aren't allowing me to choose my monitor's maximum screen resolution(which is 1366 x 768). I just have two resolutions displayed which are 1024x768 and 800x600 . If I give the command : xrandr -s 1366x768 then the output is: Size 1366x768 not found in available modes So just for the sake of getting 1366x768 resolution I am forced to install the proprietary graphic driver that AMD gives me from its site. But if I install it(which itself is quite a problem-prone process), I undergo a lot of 'inconvenience'. Sometimes after an OS update, the driver crashes unity. Then I will have to uninstall that driver from a tty and google around for a solution. Also I encounter screen tearing problems occasionally. In addition I also cant see my login screen(See this question which states this particular problem). The main problem is AMD does not update its driver as quick as Ubuntu updates its OS. This is quite irritating. So, I want the maximum resolution(and performance) that my graphics card and monitor can give me without installing the 'problematic' proprietary graphic card driver that AMD gives. Is this possible? Suggestions please. Thanks in advance.   I'm attempting to write a process that matches obscure strings to a single 'master string' for further processing. I have a lot of data that looks something like this: Basketball Basket Ball Football BasketBallR BBall BBall - r FootB ...and so on. These need to be mapped to a master record like so: Basketball = Basket Ball, BBall Basketball - R = BasketBallR, BBall - r I also have instances of data resembling this format: Football -r FootBall - r-g/H,Q,HH These situations need to be separated into different categories before being mapped. For example FootBall - r-g/H,Q,HH should be: Football - r Football - g Football - H Football - Q Football - HH At this point, it still needs to be mapped to a master record... I've tried several different combinations of fuzzywuzzy matching methods, Levenshtein Distance measurements, regex, etc. and can't seem to find a reliable method to logically associate different naming styles of a single item with a master name. I'm throwing my hands up in desperation. Are there any existing python resources than can help sort out my problem? Are there other options? Can anybody point out an obvious option that I might have overlooked? Basically, any suggestion, solution, resource or alternative method is greatly appreciated.

• Using command line to connect to a wireless network with an http login

  I'm trying to connect to a wifi network where it hijacks all requests and redirects you to a page where you have to agree to a terms of use before it lets you connect to the actual outside world. This is a pretty common practice, and usually doesn't pose much of a problem. However, I've got a computer running Ubuntu 9.10 server with no windowing system. How can I use the command line to agree to the terms of use? I don't have internet access on the computer to download packages via apt-get or anything like that. Sure, I can think of any number of workarounds, but I suspect there's an easy way to use wget or curl or something. Basically, I need a command line solution for sending an HTTP POST request essentially clicking on a button. For future reference, it'd be helpful to know how to send a POST request with, say, a username and password if I ever find myself in that situation in another hotel or airport.

I've noticed that the TightVNC will become unresponsive after a period of inactivity. Is this a common issue? Restarting TightVNC solves the problem, but can be a bit annoying. Is there a solution to this? I don't suppose copy & paste between the two systems can be made to work?

• How can we implement network search for Windows AND OS X clients?

  We have a network with Windows 7 and OS X (10.5 and 10.6) computers. Our servers run on Windows Server 2003 (1 Small Business Server, 2 Standard). We need to be able to search through about 15.000 - 30.000 documents in our archives. The best solution would be if users can search directly from the Windows menu (on Windows 7) or the Spotlight menu (on OS X 10.5 and 10.6). Also good would be if users can search directly from the search bar in their browsers, or by first visiting a site with the search form. In case the users search through the browser, it's important they they are able to open a file in the search results just by clicking on it. I have tested Microsoft Search Server Express, but it doesn't meet the requirements (no OS X support, results in the browser can't be opened by clicking in anything but Internet Explorer). I have looked at Spotlight server, but that only supports OS X. Thanks!

• Laptop won't load an OS or even an OS setup.

  My fiancé's laptop started to crash and would get BSOD errors to the point that she couldn't even boot up because it would either take forever or just crash. So I figured I'd try to reformat, as it's done this before and this was the solution last time. On Windows 7, it will not go passed the "Setup is starting..." screen. On Windows XP, it crashes once the setup is about to start (BSOD). I shut it down and let it sit for 5+ hours, in case it was overheating, but it's doing the same thing anyway. By now, I figure it's something to do with the hardware but I hope not. Any ideas?

• HP Wireless Printer not working

  I have installed an HP DeskJet 4620 driver on a win 7 machine. All works perfectly for several days, and than printing is not longer possible. Instead I get the message: "Unable to communicate with printer". This happened on every Win 7 PC I tried, and none of the HP/MS sites contain any relevant info... (Posting this so that the answer appears online, as I did solve it after much work) Solution: It appears that HP installation puts a unique "port" called "HP Network re-discovery". It stops working after some time (possibly after the first time the printer/pc enter sleep mode). BUT, the standard MS TCP port works just fine. So: Go to "Printers" Right click Printer Click "Printer properties" and then "Printer" or "Fax" (for both - do all this twice) Click "Add Port..." Select "Standard TCP Port" Fill in details Move printer to use the new port by un-checking the old one and checking the new one Happy printing.

• Snow Leopard, PHP, and MySQL

  I have just installed Snow Leopard and now my PHP/MySQL program ends in a "Segmentation fault". I have been searching the web for a solution, I realize that there are some issues with SL/PHP/MySQL, but I have not found anything that works yet. I downloaded the binary MySQL package mysql-5.1.42-osx10.6-x86_64. I have updated the php.ini file as suggested at various posts. When I run PHP and connect to the MySQL server the behavior is a bit random. In many cases it works fine to connect and read data. In my specific case the PHP program constructs a LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE ... statement to load data from a text file. It should do several such queries after each other in a loop. It works one time but the halts in a "Segmentation fault". The program worked fine in Leopard, but not now. My versions are: OS 10.6.2, PHP 5.3.0, MySQL 5.1.42

  I know there are some great apps out there for keeping track of passwords (see how-do-you-keep-track-of-all-your-passwords if you aren't familiar). I'm interested in additional features for managing my passwords, particularly to reset all my passwords. I can imagine that this feature would be pretty complicated to implement, considering: websites have different methods for resetting a password client applications most likely don't have a means to change a password except for through a graphical user interface (as opposed to providing a command line command) So, I'm curious if there is a solution out there and I just haven't found it. If not, perhaps I will have to start another side project.

• Web hosting company basically forces me to use their domain name [closed]

  I've recently stumbled upon an unusual problem with one of hosting companies called giga-international.com. Anyway, I've ordered com.hr domain from Croatian domain name registration company, and my client insisted on using this host provider as couple of his friends already are hosted with them. I thought something was fishy when the first result on Google for Giga International was this little forum rant instead of their webpage. When I was checking their services they listed many features etc... space available, bandwidth etc. I just wanted to check how much ram do I get for my PHP scripts so I emailed them, and they told me that was company secret. Seriously? Anyway, since my client still insisted on hosting with them I've bought their Webspace package. During registration I had to choose free domain name because I couldn't advance registration without it. Nowhere was said, not even in general terms and conditions that I wouldn't be able to change that domain name. At least not for double the price of domain name per year. They said I can either move my domain name over to them (and pay them domain registration), or pay them 1 Euro per month for managing a DNS entry. On any previous hosting solution I was able to manage my domain names just by pointing my domain to their name servers, and this is something completely new and absurd for me. They also said that usual approach is not possible because of security and hardware limitations. I'd like to know what you guys think about this case, and should I report, and where should I report this case. In short. They forced me to register free domain name which doesn't suit my needs in order to register for their webspace package, and refuse to change domain name for my account until I either transfer domain to them or pay them DNS management which costs double the price of the domain name per year.

• Problem with running a program from flashdrive

  I have a USB drive with two partitions in it, one hidden and one normal. I have an application which swaps the memory and runs the flash application in hidden zone. The problem is that the application works fine on Windows 7 and when run on Win XP, it swaps the partitions but doesn't run the flash applications but just keeps running in the background. I can see it in task manager. But, when I copy the application to desktop and run, it runs with no glitch. I was facing the same problem on Win 7 too, but it was running as required when I ran it using "Run in XP mode" and then I applied a SHIM and is running since then as required. The application is built using VC++ 2008. does anyone know the solution?
