• Moving a "All-in-one" PC when turned on/off.

  I have an "all-in-one" pc. I know that moving a pc when it is switched on is harmful to the hardware components. What I would like to know is if the same applies to "all-in-one" pc's and if the same applies to regularly moving it from one side of the room to the other when it is turned off! The reason for the question is that I work on one desk during the day, and in the evening move it to the couch so I can do other stuff while watching TV or something. I always turn it off before the move, but somebody told me that I can be damaging the machine by doing so. Can anybody shed some light on this? Many thanks

• Restrict whole system on certain cores except a few process?

  Hi I am running some latency sensitive program on a Linux machine (more specifically, CentOS 6), and I don't want the threads of the process being preempted. So in my plan, the first step is to set cpu affinity of the threads so that threads are running on separate cores, so they don't preempt each other. Then the second step is to make sure other processes in the system not running on these cores. So my question is: is it possible to restrict the whole system running on certain cores, except this process? This should apply to any newly created processes in the future.

• Slow Crash with Filter Manager

  I have been having sporadic freezes on my machine lately. There is no blue screen or crash screen. All the applications just stop responding and ~5~10 minutes later it will power off. After checking the event log a couple times, I have found that the same event occurs right before each crash. File System Filter 'Avgmfx64' (6.1, ?2011?-?12?-?23T08:08:12.000000000Z) has successfully loaded and registered with Filter Manager. My question is twofold: I can not seem to find any information on what the Filter Manager actually is supposed to do. for curiosities sake, what is it? And more importantly, how do I fix this problem. From the research I have done, I see that similar problems can be caused by out of date drivers, so I have already taken the time to update all of my drivers, run MemTest, and verify the drive integrity.

  I have spent half an hour trying to change an icon on my Win-7-64 machine (Why Can't I Change the Icon). One reasonable suggestion (reasonable in terms of having a solution, not reasonable in terms of having to jump through these hoops for such a basic requirement) was to delete the old icon from the %userprofile% \ Local Settings..., however when I click on this folder in Windows Explorer I am told the folder is not accessible - Access Denied. Well! It's my PERSONAL computer isn't it? Isn't that what PC stands for? It's MY computer - why can't I get access to that folder? It's about time we started calling these machines MCs (Microsoft Computer), or WCs (Windows Computer) - because they sure as hell aint PERSONAL damn computers!!!!

• Crunchbang asks for URIs to get build dependencies for php5 [closed]

  I'm trying to install PHP5, by compiling it myself. I'm doing this on Crunchbang Linux, version 11. Specifically, the version using the 3.2 kernel. Crunchbang 11 is based on Debian. This is a 64-bit Virtual machine, running on a 64-bit Win7 Professional. Using Virtualbox 4.2 This is my sources.list file: http://pastebin.com/rQJNwX7c When I try to do sudo apt-get build-dep php5, I get the following output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list I'm not sure what's going on here. • Route SOAP request through external server

  I need to integrate with a SOAP Web Service that requires that the requests come from a whitelisted IP address. As I often do development from all over the place it is quite annoying to ask for a new whitelisted IP each time. I have a remote server that is whitelisted. How can I route my SOAP request (I can change the endpoint in the WSDL) to my remote machine and have that forwarded to the Web Service? My remote server is used for other things so it needs to only forward a specific port, not all traffic. Oh, and the Web Service expects SSL.

So something that is dead easy to setup and configure. The proxy will run locally on my LAN, and I want it to emulate as close as possible the type of proxy you might find in corporate networks, because I'm testing an SOA system. • MySQL max_user_connections

  We're releasing a site in a couple of weeks that has been developed on a local machine but now when were testing on dev server we get MySQL error 'max_user_connections'. We have talked to the host company (biggest in sweden) and they say that we don't close our connections properly. But the thing is that we user the EXACT same code on another host where it works. And I also added echo "closed"; in the database_close function so that now in the very bottom of very page there is "closed". To me this means that we do close the connection, anyone got any idea of what could be wrong? We connect through the PHP PDO function and closes it by setting it to 'null', all according to the manual.

• Joining windows LANs through SSH tunnel

  I have at home a computer (a windows 7 ult machine) I need to use to manage stuff at the office which hosts windows and linux servers. I am able to set up a SSH tunnel (atleast for firefox proxying) and I'd like to be able to access shared windows network drives on the other end too. I heard something about needing some kind of samba service but I couldn't find anything useful by googling that. What do I need in order to make an SSH tunnel to the office (a NAS, running linux) so that I can access windows server 2008 and windows 7 network drives? Bonus: I'd like to be able to access a MSSQL database server too if it's possible.

  I have problem, i cant figure out, how to fix.. So i am on MacOSX machine, running php 5.3.15 version, using mongo 1.3.1 version. When i try to execute php script, in which i try to connect to remote mongodb server, I get segmentation fault(11).. I installed php driver with sudo pecl install mongo I have seen, that this problem is quite popular, but havent found real solution yet..   I am building an autocomplete functionality for my site and the Google instant results are my benchmark. When I look at Google, the 50-60 ms response time baffle me. They look insane. In comparison here’s how mine looks like. To give you an idea my results are cached on the load balancer and served from a machine that has httpd slowstart and initcwnd fixed. My site is also behind cloudflare From a server side perspective I don’t think I can do anything more. Can someone help me take this 500 ms response time to 60ms? What more should I be doing to achieve Google level performance?

• How to configure permissions for win2008 task running as Network Service to stop/start a service on different system?

  Well... title says it all, actually. We've got a Scheduled Task set up on a windows server 2003 box running as the Network Service, and the batch file it runs will invoke "sc" to stop and then start a service on another windows box, however sc reports: [SC] OpenService FAILED 5: Access is denied. Running the same batch file via the windows explorer has no issues, and my user account is part of the Administrators group so I believe this is why there are no issues when I try it manually. Is this a permissions thing I enable for Network Service on the first server? Or do I enable permissions for Network Service somehow on the target server? This question (http://serverfault.com/questions/19382/why-sc-query-fails-from-one-machine-but-works-from-another) touches on something similar, but I'm looking for enabling the Network Service to access the service via the scheduled task.

• What are my options for a secure External File Share in Server 2008 R2?

  Hi, I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine installed on a home network with a number of files that need to be shared in a few different scenarios. I would like for all three scenarios to have a solution with some sort of encyption to protect the data during transfer. Scenario 1: I need to access files from my laptop (Mac OSX) or another computer outside of the network. This option seems like the easy one to answer in that I could use LogMeIn, the windows VPN, etc. to create such a connection. Scenario 2: I need to provide access to another user with minimal installation / configuration on his or her end. This makes me think of the new FTP 7.5 provided with Server 2008 R2 but i'm not sure of the details: Does it support SSH or some other form of encryption?, can an OSX user connect?, etc. My question here is what are my options? I really just don't know where to get started...

• After installing Windows 7, there're lines on the screen

  Hi, I've just installed Windows 7 on my Dell machine. Everything works fine except that there are one or two lines on the screen. The line is so random and I am sure that it's now the monitor problem. The graphic card is NVidia GeForce 7600. I replaced the default driver with the driver from the manufacturer and it didn't help. When I change screen setting, the line goes away for a while and it comes back in different location. Sometimes an app window has the line and if I move the window the line follows with the window. • Add/Remove script for local printer

  I have a Windows XP machine that runs two applications and both print on a thermal printer connected by a serial port. For one application, the "Generic / Text Only" printer must be present, for the other to work I need to remove it. I've found a few .vbs scripts, but they are for network printer. How do I make them work with my local printer? Is there a better solution? The user would have to run the script every time he needs to switch from an application to another.

• What differences should I know? I just upgraded to 13.10 from 10.10 [on hold]

  I ran Ubuntu 10.10 for a long time because I liked the menu style. The change in GUI with the upgrades drove me nuts but I finally gave in and downloaded Saucy Salamander 13.10 x64. It's a fresh install running as a virtual machine guest in VMWare Workstation 9 on a Windows 7 x64 host. Well it looks like all those icons are still there on the side which I would be OK with if there were some way to bring back my menus. I have no organized way of accessing things now, or do I? That is the purpose for this question, maybe there is some functionality I just can't find but is there. Also all my fine tuning was gone. I used to be able to change DPI but that's gone. I went ahead and installed Unity Tweak Tool via sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool but I couldn't find an icon for it after I installed it.. because again no menu. So I did a search for it and found it there. I've changed the font and which side the window buttons appear on which is good enough for now. Anyway... any suggestions you may have for me I'm game. I'm a Windows 7 user primarily but I use Ubuntu every once in a while. I really liked the old style where everything was categorized like for Applications there was Accessories, Games, Graphics, Internet, Office, Sound & Video, Wine.

  This question already has an answer here: is there anyway to know if your supposedly fully dedicated server is really a virtually resource-shared machine? [duplicate] 5 answers How can I know if my provider is giving me a dedicated physical server or if I'm getting virtual servers? The provider is from an other country so I don't have the chance to go and see the servers by myself, all of them have linux and they're managed by SSH. All the hire has been done by internet or phone. Are there any commands, dirs to analyze or a way to get this info? They of course tell me that the servers are physical, but when they make some support or hardware/software upgrade or that kind of stuff doesn't take a long. For example, when I ask for a new one with specific requirements at the end they give me more infrastructure than the one I asked for. Of course no one gives extra things without an extra price. • perfmon.exe itself taking 52.71% of cpu on windows 7 after chrome dies?

  On my Windows 7 machine (build 7100, x64, Dell XPS M1710 laptop), I'm getting horrible performance after chrome crashes. I kill the chrome process from the Resource Monitor, but after that perfmon.exe itself is shown as taking about 50% of the cpu (52.31% right now). Quitting Performance Monitor, then starting it again, shows perfmon starting out with a reasonable CPU, but it quickly (ten seconds) shoots right back up. Suggestions? So far a reboot seems to be the only way to solve the problem. I'm assuming that the perfmon issue is just a symptom of the real problem. (Update, much later: this never got resolved. I'm not seeing the problem in the RTM Win7 + latest Chrome. Yes, it was a core 2 duo, so presumably Chrome was running full blast on one cpu.)

• sqlserver.exe uses 100% CPU

  I've created an application (asp.net) that once a day syncs an entire database through XML-files. The sync first creates an transaction and then clears the databases tables and then starts to parse and insert the new rows into the database. When all the parsing is complete it commits the transaction. This works fine on a SQL Server 2005 (on another machine), but on SQL Server 2005 Express, the process starts to use 100% CPU after a while, and as I log the inserts being made I can see that it just stops inserting. No exception, it just stops inserting. Anyone got any idea what this may be? I've previously run the syncronization on another sql 2005 express (also on another computer), and that worked. The server has only 2GB RAM, could this be the problem?
