• What did they program this toy with?

  A rather strange question: I'm often asking myself with what programming languages things were created. I recently found this toy mini computer I played with when I was 13 or so at home. (Note: It is not one of those toy "notebooks", it's really small and came as an extra with a magazine) "Features": Hadware: LCD with a small field of pixels where the games were going on, besides that some stats such as score, highscore etc. Sounds and horrible music when started A really small "keyboard" with a wire Software: At least 14 or so games, from Snake over Tetris and Breakdown to some abomination of a car racing game A calculator Game selecting menu An alarm clock Inside there is a really small circuit board, I don't want to open the thing up now, though. Can you imagine if the games and "Operating System" of this thing where actually programmed using a language? If yes, what language could it be? If not with a programming language, how else was it created?

• Take input through Buttons in java

  I understand that the title might not be descriptive enough, but I'm making a magic square game in Java and basically, I'm trying to replicate user input as found in the sudoku game here: http://www.websudoku.com/. What I have is a n x n grid of Buttons (not JButton) as the board and what I want the user to be able to do is when the user clicks on one of the buttons, similar to the game above, it allows the user to type in his guess in the button itself instead of popping up a dialog box with an input field of some sort. I don't know where to start, I am a beginner in Java (not very beginner, but my knowledge with the various Java APIs is very limited), so I'm trying to find out if this would be possible and if it is, how would I go about doing it? Thanks for any help.

• css3 nth child question

  Hello. I am designing a 960px wide layout with an unordered list. Each list item is 240px wide, so 4 list items fit horizontally in a row. I have about 20 rows on the page.... I want every other list item to have a background of #ececec, so my css would be: ul li:nth-child(2n+2){ background-color:#ececec; } This works. The only problem is because there are 4 items in a row (an even #), the next row would be identical, thus rendering background colors on every 1st and 3rd list items in a row. This is not the effect I am looking to achieve. I want the background colors to alternate, creating a grid-like effect. What is the correct css to do so (think a checker board). Thanks!

• Is it stable to change I/O direction on microcontroller repeatedly?

  I'm new to microcontroller programming and I have interfaced my microcontroller board to another device that provides a status based on the command send to it but, this status is provided on the same I/O pin that is used to provide data. So basically, I have an 8-bit data line that is used as an output from the microcontroller, but for certain commands I get a status back on one of the data lines if I choose to read it. So I would be required to change the direction of this one line to read the status thus converting this line as an ouput to an input and then back to an output. Is this acceptable programming or will this changing of the I/O pin this frequently cause instability? Thanks.

• Javascript looping only through defined properties of array. How?

  For example if i'm keeping array of references via id like that: if(typeof channel_boards[misc.channel_id] == 'undefined') { channel_boards[misc.channel_id] = $('<div class="channel" channel_id="'+misc.channel_id+'"></div>').appendTo('#board'); } And then i'm looping through array to find required reference. I'm looping through undefined properties as well. Is it possible to loop only through defined properties? for(i=0;i<channel_boards.length;i++) { if(channel_boards[i] != undefined) { if(channel_boards[i].attr('channel_id') != visible) {channel_boards[i].addClass('hidden_board');} else {channel_boards[i].removeClass('hidden_board');} } } Maybe i should change the way i'm storing references? Via object for example, but how i'll be able to find proper reference via id number.

• Issue with Z-Index and IE7

  I've browsed on the board and tried and bunch of these solutions and I'm still stuck. The page I'm looking at is here. In IE7, the drop downs are showing up behind the homepage content. And if you go to one of the site sections, by clicking on "Menus", they even show up behind the dynamically created side-bar. I've given the drop down a z-index of 1000 and relative positioning. On the homepage, the images have relative positioning and a small z-index (1 or 2). Any ideas?

• Resizing uploaded images based on a maximum width in django (PIL)

  I'm working on a simple message board app in Django that lets people upload images to be displayed in their posts. Since the div containing the posts is only 700px, I want to resize the uploaded images to a max width of something like 680px to save space rather than using css to display an image that's too large within the space constraints. I've been searching this site, google and the PIL docs for a while and haven't found any way of resizing an image on one dimension while maintaining the original aspect ratio. Given my inexperience, it's possible that I'm just not recognizing a solution that's plain to someone who knows what to look for.

• Writing an OS for Motorola 68K processor. Can I emulate it? And can I test-drive OS development?

  Next term, I'll need to write a basic operating system for Motorola 68K processor as part of a course lab material. Is there a Linux emulator of a basic hardware setup with that processor? So my partners and I can debug quicker on our computers instead of physically restarting the board and stuff. Is it possible to apply test-driven development technique to OS development? Code will be mostly assembly and C. What will be the main difficulties with trying to test-drive this? Any advice on how to do it?

• Remote connect to mysql?

  Hi I don't use php or mysql but I am trying to upgrade a phpbb board I got but the one click installer forgot to install some stuff in the database so I can't upgrade to the newest version till I add the missing stuff. So I need to do a remote connect to mysql database but I am not sure how to do this or what software I need(free, and very easy to setup I don't want to spend much time on this). I don't really want to use phpmyadmin since I don't want to start setting up a virtual directory and whatever else it needs to be installed. Like I said I don't do php or mysql I just choose it since in my hosting package it was one click to install phpbb and I had a mysql database free. Thanks

• node.js storing gamestate, how?

  I'm writing a game in javascript, and to prevent cheating, i'm having the game be played on the server (it's a board game like a more complicated checkers). Since the game is fairly complex, I need to store the gamestate in order to validate client actions. Is it possible to store the gamestate in memory? Is that smart? Should I do that? If so, how? I don't know how that would work. I can also store in redis. And that sort of thing is pretty familiar to me and requires no explanation. But if I do store in redis, the problem is that on every single move, the game would need to get the data from redis and interpret and parse that data in order to recreate the gamestate from scratch. But since moves happen very frequently this seems very stupid to me. What should I do?

  I am making 3 board games, and I have started my coding off in one class. Now that i wanted to move around it is giving me problems. In my view class I just want to have the main frame where users can pick from the games. And in the other views, i.e the childrens of view class i want to have the interface for the actual games. Now that the Jframe frame = new frame was created in the parent class, it cannot find the variable frame in the children classes.

• How to prevent negative number in Mysql

  Hello guys.. I have data which is starting from 0 in my database. My php will add 1 or -1 to the data depending on the user's input. My problem is that if data is 0 and a user try to subtract 1. The data become 4294967295 which is the maximum value of INT data type. Are there anyways to make the data stays in 0 even when the user asks for -1? Thanks for the reply.. my sql command is like below update board set score=score-1 where team='TeamA' //this would generate 4294967295 if the score is 0.....

• How to modify CSS when requirements change?

  Suppose I'm given the requiremnt to geneate a few pages that have tables on them. The original requirement is for all tables to be 500px. I'd write my CSS as follows: table { width: 500px; } That will apply accross the board for all tables. Now, what if they change the requirment so that some tables are 600px. What's the best way to modify the CSS? Should I give the tables classes so table.SizeOne { width: 500px; } table.SizeTwo { width: 600px; } Or is there a better way for me to deal with changes like this?

  I have a pre-code page coded as follows: <div id="linearBg"> <div id="wrapper"> <div class="logo"></div> <div class="navigation"></div> <div class="video"></div> <div class="content"></div> </div> </div> Where linearBg is a gradient background, the back board of the website. Wrapper is the container for the inner div's, and the rest are content oriented. So i've already implemented this with styles and all sorts, but the thing is I want to add: <div class="watermark"></div> underneath/behind both the content and video div, sort of like a reverse watermark, I've tried z-indexing but i'm not an expert. • MATLAB: How do I get 3D coordiantes from a user-click?

  I'm using Matlab to create a small chess game for one of my courses this semester. The thing I'm having trouble with is having the user be able to select one of the chess pieces. To simplify things, I'm making it so that the user selects a piece by clicking on the square that the chess piece resides on rather than clicking the piece itself (which I assume would be much more difficult). I know how to get the x and y coordinates of the view-port, but how do I transform these coordinates into 3-space coordinates? I know that there are multiple x,y,z coordinates associated with each view-port coordinate, but I'm only interested in the x,y,z coordinate where z = 0 (since the board itself is in the x,y plane that intersects the z axis where z = 0). • JButtons don't imediatly change on mouse event

  I'm using the java swing library to develop a board game called DAO. The problem is that after the human player makes its move, by clicking on the JButton with the piece image that he wants to play, I call the computer AI routine but inside the mouse event function. By doing this only when the function returns, the computer ends its turn, do the JButtons refresh their Images (setIcon comes in). I'd like to know how can I force the JButtons to change their image at the moment they are clicked and not only when the mouse event function ends (as I need to handle data inside it). I've tried all of this myButtons[i][j].setIcon(xIcon); myButtons[i][j].revalidate(); myButtons[i][j].repaint(); myButtons[i][j].validate(); None worked. Thx in advance

I tried to solve this by using a unique id and name for the attributes: <a href="#bottom" id="4656" name="4656"> But this hasn't worked. Suggestions? P.S. Don't use the URL bar, yes that works. Visit the page and click on a link in a post that says "Bottom of the page". This is where it isn't working.

• What is this type of programming called (creating an online network)?

  For practice purposes, I am looking to build an application that is capable of connecting multiple devices through the internet. It will be similar to craigslist, but I want to make this as an iOS application. I have very little experience with web services, as the most I've done is pulled an RSS feed onto the screen. How are these things normally done? If it's similar to a message board, is it as simple as having a database in a server/cloud, and giving all users access to it? Or is it more complicated than that? How should I begin to learn more about the backend? What kind of services are usually used in this kind of thing? The only database I've used is Core Data.

• How to automatically reflect the new Updates (on Database) to User Pages

  I am trying to create a new Notice Alert using PHP and Javascript. Suppose that a 100 users are currently logged into to the Online Notice Board Application and any One user posts a new notice. I want an immediate alert signal on all the users screen. I know, that the simplest way of doing it is to constantly Ping the server but I don't want to do it as it will slow down the server. Moreover, I am on a shared host. So I don't have access to any Socket Port. That means, I cannot establish any direct Socket Communication Channel from the Server to the User Machine. Can any one suggest me some other solution to this kind of problems???

• Updating multiple rows with an array

  I have a table that holds user information. One of the columns holds the position of the user in the game they are in. When a game is being created, I need to update the positions of the users of each team. Here is an example: Game id : 7 Team 1 users : 1,2 Team 2 users : 3,4 team1_position : array(1,2) team2_position : array(13,14) What I want to do is update the user table using the array of positions in the SET area. My goal is to be able to update the users without the need for their id (I have different size game boards, so I have multiple position arrays for each board size) How can I do something like this: UPDATE user SET position='(team1_position)' WHERE game = '7' AND team = '1' I feel like it would be a waste of resources to select all the id's of each team and update them separately.

  Has anyone had any success in using the Enter USB TV Box from Enter Multimedia? It comes bundled with software that works in Windows. I have had no luck using it in Ubuntu 10.10. Update 3 I learned that this TV tuner is rebranded version of Gadmei UTV302 (USB TV Tuner Box). Update 4 I tried adding em28xx as the chipset (as suggested by user BOBBO below) for the tuner but that did not work. I went back to my Pinnacle PCTV internal card. I don't think the tuner referred by UbuntuForums (Gadmei UTV 330) and the tuner that I have (Gadmei UTV 302) are the same. My USB tuner is several times bigger. My tuner seems to be a newer device with a newer tuner chip. I will submit details of this device to the LinuxTV developers this weekend. Update 5 I opened the tuner box and found that it uses a tuner from a Chinese company - Tenas. Model is TNF 8022-DFA. Update 6 Tuner chip specs (retrived from supplier directory) for Tenas TNF 8022-DFA. Supply voltage: true 5V device(low power dissipation) Control system: I2C bus control of tuning, address selection Tuning system: PLL controlled tuning Receiving system: system PAL D/K,IF(Intermediate Frequency): 38MHz Receiving channels: full frequency range from channel DS1 (49.75MHz) to channel DS57 (863.25MHz); Use Texas Instruments SN761678 IC solution, with mini install size Update 7 Reverse side of the circuit board.   Do you prefer playing classic games rather than the newer ones? Then get ready for some classic goodness with the JC-Tetris extension for Google Chrome. JC-Tetris in Action When you click on your new “JC-Tetris Toolbar Button” a new mini-Chrome window will open with the game displayed inside. This could be very convenient for those who would like or need to pause the game, minimize the window, and finish the game later. All that is needed to play are the four “Arrow Keys & the Space Bar”. Note: The text was small when the window first opened during our test so we used the “Ctrl +” keyboard shortcut twice to enlarge it. You may or may not experience similar text size results. Like any Tetris game things start out “quietly enough” but this one speeds up quickly, so be prepared! Notice that you do get a warning of what is waiting to drop onto the game board on the left side. Whenever you complete a game you will see this small window asking if you would like to enter a name for the score…you can easily ignore/bypass the window by clicking “Cancel”. Another game and a much better result. Do not be surprised if you feel that little burst of “rushed panic” at the end! Conclusion JC-Tetris is an enjoyable way to relax when you need a break. • Catching people up

  It’s been a while since I’ve blogged.  I suppose sometimes when one’s personal life gets busy, there are some things that fall by the wayside.  So what all has happened since I last blogged? Business has been good with lots of lessons learned.  I had hoped I would have had an important announcement several months ago concerning the business I own, but that simply hasn’t materialized yet. Will keep everyone posted.  Ensuring your business has a good sales pipeline and stays ahead in the technology curve is extremely important. I eventually resigned my INETA Board of Directors position.  Never one to mince words, frankly I had several issues with how things are run at INETA.  Mostly centered around some ethical issues compounded by higher expectations and what I felt was a lack of support.  I had put my hat into the ring in order to help change things, but eventually I didn’t really see change a possibility, and so all things must come to an end. I have started writing up a new business plan for a new startup, details to be forthcoming.  It’s new name will be Linker CRM.  I have some aggressive game changing plans ahead for it.  Ping me if you’re interested in finding out more information and don’t mind signing a non-compete and confidentiality agreement. ;) My personal life, has been hectic.  A 4 year old will do that to you.  As well as being divorced and the headaches associated with that.  If you’ve been divorced, I feel your pain, if you haven’t been, I would never wish the emotional roller coaster ride on anyone.  Dating has been interesting.  It’s a lot different at age 35 than your early 20s and relationships are far more complicated. Ethan is an absolutely fantastic adorable charmer of a kid.  He’s definitely going to be a heartbreaker.  His personality is really shining through and he’s taken onto my appreciation of music (and yes I’ll admit dance too).  We watched America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC) together for the first time, he really loved it and I think he’ll probably start his own break dancing crew eventually.  I’ve posted a few videos on Facebook for those interested.  I’m extremely proud of him, but please say a little prayer for us as we try and continue to curb some behavior issues, as well as his mother and I try to settle some differences. This year’s travel plans have already included Dallas, Seattle, and a trip to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics (a huge thanks to the Washington State Police for the nice souvenir they gave me).  Future travel plans include a trip to Korea in the 2nd half of May, Nashville again in the summer, and hopefully New Orleans for the Microsoft TechEd 2010 Conference. Look for some new blog posts soon …

• 64-bit 13.10 shows 1GB less RAM than 64-bit 13.04 did

  Multiple 64-bit versions (Kubuntu, Lubuntu and Xubuntu) once installed on my ThinkPad R60 show 3GB of RAM, not the correct 4GB of RAM. Last week with 13.04, I had 4GB of RAM (which matches the BIOS) and this week I have 3GB available. Inquiring minds want to know.
