• How to tell if a datareader is open on a connection and close it

  Hi, I'm setting up a little thing for connection pooling and on of the more common bugs that we have occur(its always an easy fix, but we just can't remember reader.Close()!) it is when we have a connection that is used by a lot of classes/methods and one method opens a data reader and forgets to close it. This isn't really bad cause a lot of times all you have to do is go into the debugger and go up one level and see the function before it was and check if it had an unclosed data reader. Now, here is the bigger problem. In this connection pool, if a datareader is open, then it's not known until a thread gets a connection and tries to use it and the thing that originally opened the data reader may no longer even be alive. So quite simply, how can you detect if a data reader is open on a connection and is there a way to close the reader without closing the connection?

There are a lot of philosophies on development of software. Like the UNIX-philosophy. Often vague and not easy to understand. I am looking for statements such as the one cited below. Which you can ask about the software when it's in the design-stage, is ready to be coded, and has been coded and is ready for launch. The software I am talking about, is of course the software made for the end-user. Ken Rockwell wrote: "I expect that it will let me get more accomplished in less time." (Here one could ask "will this let me get more accomplished in less time?")

• Implement 3270 protocol in Java

  I've got a big problem with IBM HACL for accessing a server which speaks 3270 protocol. The library keeps crashing, and our JNI wrapper is actually a bug-fixing layer for the poorly-implemented and poorly-documented library (and I suspect we have introduced new bugs with it too). Moreover, in our company, everybody knows Java, and could maintain the software if we didn't have the JNI-Layer and the IBM class library. We have to use the C++ class library, because the IBM Java library is unusable: we get every non-printable character translated, and we lose all control characters along the way. Now the question is: can we ditch this library and implement our solution in Java completely (we'd like to avoid using another library from another vendor)? Is the protocol well documented? Is the implementation of 3270-over-ssl really so complex? Thanks.

  All, I have a PHP application written in Zend Framework with MVC style. I plan to use Zend_DB to connect to the MySQL database and process queries. I am looking for a wrapper class which makes it easy to use Zend_DB class. This wrapper class will have a constructor that connects to the Mysql db using Zend_DB. It will also have a method to return a singleton instance for each and every db connection made. Something like: $pptDB = PPTDB::getInstance(); $pptDB->setFetchMode(PPTDB::FETCH_OBJ); $result = $pptDB->fetchRow('SELECT * FROM bugs WHERE bug_id = 2'); echo $result->bug_description; Where class PPTDB extends Zend_DB Is this something feasible to have? • "SELECT ... FOR UPDATE" not working for Hibernate and MySQL

  Hi, We have a system in which we must use pessimistic locking in one entity. We are using hibernate, so we use LockMode.UPGRADE. However, it does not lock. The tables are InnoDB We have checked that locking works correctly in the database (5.0.32), so this bug http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=18184 seems to be no problem. • UILabel not updating

• IE7 float/clear bug

  I am having the weirdest behavior in IE7 on this page. I have a clear: left on #moored that makes sure that #content-container will expand to the height of the float: left'd #content. Of course, Firefox and IE8 do it right. The weird thing though, is in IE7, it appears that #content-container is automatically expanding to contain the #secondary-content, which it shouldn't. Even weirder is when I view with IE8 with developer tools, the boundary boxes seem to show the that the #content-container is the expanding to the height of the #secondary-container, even though the background: #fff tells a different story. The background goes to where it should, and the void is now black. I've Googled a bit and came across heaps of similar float bugs, but I don't think I've found one which offers a fix yet for this circumstance. Can anyone please help me?

• Using Kate with Simple Build Tool (SBT)

  Hello I am working with the Kate editor based on the lack of other good tools for Scala development, I am also using IntelliJ however it still has some bugs, and are slow enough to make me impatient. I have just startet using both Kate and SBT, and in that regard I have a little challenge I hope there is an answer for out there on "The Internet". I am using the standard "Build plugin" in Kate and has changed the commands from make to sbt. This works fine, and I am also getting a error report when the sbt fails during compile time. However I really wish to know if it is possible to integrate the compile errors into Kate such that it would be shown under "Errors and Warnings" instead of just in the output tab, where I have to do a manual search for the compile errors. Im guessing that it has something to do with the format of the output, if that is the case maybe it is "just" a smaller adjustment I need to make to the parsing language.

• Why does my DHTML menu have huge layout issues in IE7?

  This one's got me stumped. Usually with a little CSS juggling here and there I am able to solve most IE7 CSS bugs, but not this one! Head on over to the example page and view it in IE7, you will soon see that when mousing over the (vertical) drop down menu on the left of the page, it opens the sub menu WAY over to the right. I have pulled every last hair out! If it helps, the menu was made with 'Sothink DHTML Menu 9' As always, all replies are much appreciated.

• SubSonic-based app that connects to multiple databases

  Hello there, I currently developed an app that connects to SQL Server 2005 database, so my DAL objects where generated using information from that DB. It will also be possible to connect to an Oracle and MySQL db, all with the same table structures (aside from the normal differences in fields, such as varbinary(max) in SQL Server and BLOB in Oracle, and so on). For this purpose, I already defined multiple connection strings and multiple SubSonic providers for the different DB's the app will run on. My question is, if I generated my objects using a SQL Server database, should the generated objects work transparently with the other DB's or do I need to generate a different DAL for each database engine I use? Should I be aware of any possible bugs I may encounter while performing these operations? Thanks in advance for any advice on this issue.

  Hi, I have been working in Oracle iStore from past 4 months and i have been managing the application without any IDE (basically doing all the chores on notepad only because application has been designed poorly and no IDE can support it). Since the coding is done on simple notepad files it is very hard to find out the bugs in the application. I am facing a problem that i have not idea which jsp page redirect the control to which jsp page. For instance, there are two jsp pages A.jsp and other is B.jsp. Now the browser is currently displaying A.jsp. When the user click on submit button (available on A.jsp) the form submits and redirects the control to B.jsp. Now my problem is that i know i am coming on B.jsp but, i don't know that A.jsp is redirecting the control to B.jsp. Is there an method available in Servlet API which tells Which jsp is redirecting the control to B.jsp?   I am looking for a free alternative to TFS. What would be the best alternative stack(source control, bug tracking, project management/planning, wiki, automated builds (ci))? Keeping in mind that it would be nice if they all integrated well. For example, it would be nice to be able to link bugs to source control, and then be able to link to a project plan and then be able to automate building. I do not have issues with using Microsoft project to manage project planing. I know i would like to use these....: SVN TeamCity NUnit But i am struggling to find a good Wiki/Project Planning/Bug tracking, that would integrate well. Any questions let me know.

  I need to run the SFTP fileserver binary as root, but direct root login is not allowed. In WinSCP, if I use "default" on SFTP server protocol option everything works as expected.   What is your opinion about open source software? It is helpful in many situation, for example a community can correct many bugs. But I also think that it can be dangerous for a software developer. If you develop an application and share its source code, a lot of applications can grow with a little effort, simply copying part of your code. For example, if you develop a library in WPF which can be used to create charts, and share your code, this can be dangerous for companies which main business is WPF component developing. And obviously it is dangerous for a software developer who works in that company. What do you think about this?

• How to handle form submission ASP.NET MVC Back button?

  Hi guys, i have a form which allows the user to key in the data and then submit. if everything works well on this action result, then i will redirect the user back to a thank you page. my problem right now is that when the user click on the back button, they will be able to go back to the form page and the inputs will still be there. and if the user just click on submit again, i will be getting some potential weird bugs. so in terms of asp.net mvc, what's the best way to handle users who click on the back button? thanks!

• How to i disable the _moz_resizing?

  I am using nicEdit editor and i have added my own custom image resizing script to it. But i want to disable the default _moz_resizing that appears in firefox. I wanted to have finer control over the image being resized. ( Eg: Allow only the image to resize and inherit the width of the parent container. ) So i wrote a custom script. But since firefox has its own image resizing control (_moz_resizing) how do i disable it? If there is no way to do so, i have a very simple workaround where i browser detect firefox and turn off my custom script and use the _moz_resizing instead. But i won't have fine grained control and will have to rely on there being now browser bugs in firefox. :(

• Make SQL Server Reporting Services use metric measurements

  I'm newly getting into creating and programming reports using SQL Server Reporting Services. One thing that bugs me right off the bat: I can't seem to find an easy way to tell the BIDS (Business Intelligence Dev Studio, a.k.a. Visual Studio) to use the metric system for measurements - you know - millimeters, centimeters etc., instead of inches and so on. I was trying to figure out whether that's a setting inside Visual Studio (and if so: where is it??), or whether this depends on the Reporting services instance we're going against (and again: if so, where the heck can I change that???). There must be a way to change this!! Except for the US, no one in the world is still measuring in inches..... c'mon - the world at large has long since adopted the metric system! Don't tell me Microsoft makes me go back into the dark ages.....

• Creating a Web Wrapper for COM and OCX

  Hi guys, Today we have a windows application that, using an OCX, creates a web page (visible by a WebBrowser control in a small .NET WinForm application) and communicates through COM to the main application/client. (not relevant but this is Pascal) I'm currently responsible to re create this application in a web environment so we can have the same functionality shared through Web as the user can see the same in a Web Browser. The Windows application has almost 4 years on it and I need to re create everything from scratch, and all the bugs/features find in the future in the Windows Application I have to re create them again in the Web... Ohh well, you can see where this will end. I was thinking... is there any way I can create a Wrapper, even using 3rd party commercial objects, to: Communicate with the COM Object Can expose the content of the OCX (this in my most confortable language, ASP.NET C#, but other are welcome) I was thinking out loud, can this be accomplish with a Java Applet? Any ideas or any point to the right road will be appreciated.

• Doctrine Mssql uniqueidentifier isn't cast as char or nvarchar when retrieved from the database.

  When I retrieve a record from the database which has a column of type "uniqueidentifier", Doctrine fills it with "null" rather than the unique id from the database. Some research and testing has brought this down to a PDO/dblib driver issue. When directly querying via PDO, null is returned in place of the unique id. For reference, http://trac.doctrine-project.org/ticket/1096, has a bit on this, however, it was updated 11 months ago with no comment for resolution. A way around this, as mentioned at http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=24752&edit=1, is to cast the column as a char. However, it doesn't seem Doctrine exposes the native field type outside of generating models which makes it a bit hard to detect uniqueidentifier types and cast them internally when building the sql query. Has anyone found a workaround for this?

• Debug PyDev+Eclipse - Code not reloads after code change in breakpoint/suspend mode

  I often doing such steps and want to optimize debug speed: I am setting some breakpoints. I am running Google Appengine Application (Python 2.5.2+). When breakpoint occur I often change code to fix bugs. After code change want to test again but there is problem if I changed code in breakpoint/suspend mode the application does not updates with my code changes - thus requiring a slow reloading. Does anybody have an idea of what is root cause of forcing reloading after suspend or it is PyDev Bug/Limitation?

• PHP SoapClient: Problems with Distributed WSDL File

  Hello, I have a problem using a distributed WSDL File ( scheme / other definitions are declared outside the actual wsdl) with php's SoapClient. This is the Fault Message I get: SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: 'getSomeInfo' already defined. After some googling , it seems to be a bug inside php as someone else discovered exactly the same problem: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=45282 Has there been any bug fix(es)? Any solution to work around this bug? PS: I think posting a code snippet is senseless, since the invocation of the SoapClient ctor using just the WSDL is the only that fails. • Ideal dev/test/QA environment for development

  I am working to rebuild my company's dev/test/QA environment. We have 10-15 programmers that are involved in a number of projects. They currently all develop locally on their PCs and use the dev environment for testing. We currently do not have a QA environment, so deployments are frequently a pain because bugs are usually found after something has gone live. Here's what I envision: Doing away with everyone's local admin privileges and making everyone develop on a dev server Create a QA environment that is identical to our production systems. This will allow them to test deployments. Create a new test environment that is more locked down than the dev server so that proper testing can be done. What are your thoughts? What is the best way to set up an environment like this? We develop ASP .NET applications using MS Visual Studio 2008 (if that helps).

• Convert doc/docx to semantic HTML

  I would like to convert doc/docx documents to semantic HTML. Some wishes/requirements: Semantic HTML such that headers in the document are <h1>, <h2> etc., tables are <table> and so forth. Should preferably be possible to handle headings, lists, tables and images. Graphs and math formulas is a nice extra. • Doesn't have to be converted straight from doc/docx to html, could use an intermediary format, such as xml or docbook. • Should work programatically, and with large number of documents. The closest thing to a solution I've found so far is http://holloway.co.nz/docvert/index.html, but unfortunately there are many a few bugs, small user base and it can't handle a lot of documents. More of a proof of concept.
