  • Can I restore Windows 8/install Windows 7 from BIOS?

    - by Tom
I recently got an ASUS K55A series laptop with Windows 8 on it, and have been trying to load Windows 7 on it for days to no avail, and recently I discovered how to get my Windows 7 install DVD to boot from the BIOS, but I deleted all of my Windows 8 system information from both partitions of my HDD and Windows 7 setup says it cannot install on the disc because of a partition format issue. I did not delete the recovery HDD partition for Windows 8, but I can't get the HDD to show up in my boot menu in BIOS, and none of the F keys work to get to recovery mode (only DEL and F2 work to get me into BIOS)

  • Does OEM license of x86 Windows 7 extend to the x64 version?

    - by Michael Teper
I bought a laptop that came preinstalled with 2GB of RAM and Windows 7 Professional x86. I upgraded to 8GB RAM, and naturally want to install the x64 version of Windows. The laptop came without media, with the option to create a bootable restore disc, which is, of course Win7 x86. Question 1: does my Win7 license cover both x86 and x64 versions? Question 2: is there a legitimate way to acquire x64 install media (e.g. from Microsoft) for a nominal fee? (believe it or not, the laptop manufacturer support had the gall to suggest that I should have bought a differently configured machine in the first place) Thank you!

  • Linux : How to convert media files to DVD format and burn?

    - by James.Elsey
I have a load of media files on my PC, mostly AVI/MKV and some mpegs. On windows, I would use ConvertXToDVD to convert these to DVD format, and to burn to disc. That application also lets you save a bit of space on the DVD to put the original file in its AVI format on as well. How can I do this on linux? What are the alternatives to this Windows application? I could try to run ConvertXtoDVD under wine but I would prefer to find a native linux solution Thanks in advance!

  • Cloning my Windows boot drive--Windows hangs on booting off new drive.

    - by idyllhands
I copied my Windows XP partition to a new drive using GParted live CD (using the GUI). I made sure to flag it as boot, and then used my XP disc to enter Recovery Console and ran fixboot and fixmbr on it. Now, it will boot up to the Windows flash screen, but hangs at that point. Any suggestions on how to proceed? I am just trying to come up with a quick way to clone my system and make the drive bootable, and gParted seemed like the easiest way, but now I've been working on it for over an hour.

  • Help remembering name of boot CD (maybe it wasn't a live CD)

    - by daneee
I am struggling to remember the name of a boot CD I have since lost the disc for. It was great for cloning discs, and resetting passwords. It's NOT the UBCD4Win, and it defos wasn't Knoppix. I have checked the LiveCD list and can't seem to find it there by doing a 'sort by'. I seem to remember it was called something like GS Tools but that might be more or less completely wrong. It had an unusual but memorable name. Makes me wonder how I came across it in the first place!

  • WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

    - by Aelexe
My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice. Thanks for your time.

  • OEM Windows 8 Downgrade to Windows 7

    - by user1873048
I recently Purchased an ASUS K55A As you may know, all Windows 8 machines come with a BIOS that contains 'Secure Boot'. This basically makes sure that the BIOS won't load anything other than the Windows 8 OEM bloatware version that comes with new Laptops. However the Asus Bios allows for me to disable the secure boot, and therefore I should be able to revert to Windows 7, Linux, etc. Drivers may or may not be supported. When I put my MINT LINUX boot disc in CD-R Drive and try to boot from ISO, nothing happens. There isn't even a boot priority list in this BIOS... I can provide screen shots later. It just says WINDOWS 8 Bootloader and also on the other tab it says WINDOWS 8 BOOT OVERRIDE Has anybody purchased a windows 8 machine and successfully loaded windows 7 or Linux?

  • PNY ExpressCard SATA II 2-port card - drivers?

    - by stewartwb
I bought a couple of PNY eSATA cards for notebook computers, model P-NSA2-EC-RF. I mistakenly thought that they would be a bit more plug-and-play, like cards that supply USB or Firewire ports. They did not ship with the Driver CD, and the drivers I found on the PNY web site didn't work. I've emailed their support group, but we all know how likely it is that they will respond before the end of the decade. Does anyone have a driver disc handy for this model card, or know where I might download a driver ISO? (Dell XPS M1330 laptop running Windows 7 x64 and sometimes Windows 7 x86)

  • Password not accepted when resuming from sleep

    - by Comrade
My HP Pavilion dv-series notebook will not accept the user account password for the logged in user when resuming from sleep - message returned is Incorrect Password. Simply selecting the Switch User option reloads the login screen and allows me to log in as the same user with the same password that was originally rejected. And, yes I've tried it more than one (hundred) times in case you were thinking it's just a case of slippery fingers. Another interesting point is that it appears to be independent of the software running on the machine. Since the issue first appeared, I have done two clean installs where all HD partitions were wiped and new ones created during fresh installation of the OS. The first such clean install was of Ubuntu (Lucid) 10.04 amd-64, the second of Win 7 Pro 64 (from boxed disc and activated post install). Exactly the same symptoms, described above, are exhibited on both platforms. Have engaged in significant amount of Googling an come up empty so any ideas are welcome.

  • Master Boot Record

    - by Crystal
I'm trying to understand what an MBR is. I know it is used to boot the device, like a compact flash card. If you had five 1GB CF card from SanDisk for a camera, would there be any reason for the manufacturer to have different MBRs? It seems like to me, if for some reason one CF card wouldn't boot, you could copy the MBR from a working CF card and write it to the non-working CF card. Would this MBR for a SanDisk card work on the same size Western Digital card for the same use? Thanks!

  • DVD/CD-ROM drives stop working in Windows 7

    - by Marcus L
All of a sudden Windows 7 (64 bit) lost all DVD and CD-ROM drives. It worked fine for about a month, then I don't know what happened. At first I thought it was a hardware problem - that my DVD-ROM had malfunctioned. But then I realized that Windows 7 no longer picked up on Demon Tools drives either. I can boot both Windows installation and Knoppix from the DVD-drive. So it seems to be a general problem with "disc-media". When trying to reinstall the hardware DVD-ROM Windows recognizes the drive (though sometimes simply label it as "CD-ROM drive"), but then says something went wrong - with from what I understand is a default error message (39), claiming the driver has become corrupt. I've tried every Microsoft recommended action, i.e. uninstall, reinstall, look for driver updates etc. etc., but with no luck. Any tip most welcome!

  • Is UEFI more or less vulnerable than Legacy BIOS?

    - by Eric
Is UEFI more secure than BIOS on a Windows 8.1 machine? Is UEFI vulnerable to malware in ways that Legacy BIOS is not? Is it correct that UEFI can connect to the internet before the OS (or anti-virus program) has loaded? On some boards, UEFI settings can be changed in Windows. Do these things affect PC security? I have read that BIOS on an MBR disc can be vulnerable to 'rootkits' There have been reports that suggest UEFI secure boot may not be infallible. Is UEFI better at defending against malware than BIOS?

  • Disaster - partitions lost, data seemingly alive, how to recover?

    - by a2h
I've used TestDisk and it's written my old partition structure of a ~20GiB partition for Vista, ~25GiB partition for 7 (but it now shows up as unallocated) and a ~400GiB partition for documents. What it's meant to be is a 30GiB partition for 7, some unallocated space, and a ~400GiB partition for documents. So currently, I have access to all my documents, but not any of the programs I've installed on C:, or AppData, because my boot partition is now supposedly a 20GB vista partition. I've tried using my Windows 7 install disc's repair function, but that did nothing beyond wasting about 10 minutes of my time. I'm currently posting from an Ubuntu live CD. Any help?

  • Fastest security check of file tree on NFS

    - by fungs
I am currently experiencing very bad performance using the following on an NFS network folder: time find . | while read f; do test -L "$f" && f=$(readlink -m $f); grp="$(stat -c %G $f)"; perm="$(stat -c %A $f)"; done Question 1) Within the loop permissions are checked using the variables grp and perm. Is there a way to lower the amount of disc I/O for these kind of checks over the network (e.g. read all meta data at once using find)? Question 2) It seems like the NFS isn't tuned very well, the same operation on a similar network link via SSHFS take only one third of the time. All parameters are auto-negotiated. Any suggestions?

  • Red Hat 6.5- sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.accept_redirects=0

    - by kjbradley
I am in the process of writing a Red Hat 6.5 Kickstart disc with hardened security. I have run a program to determine where the weaknesses are in my system, and apparently there is a medium severity problem by accepting IPV6 redirects. When I implement the following line in my post script in my kickstart, I can't access any websites externally with wget, or ssh/scp in from my computer. sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.accept_redirects=0 Is there a workaround to this so that the system will still be hardened but I will be able to access systems that are external?

  • bluray playback stuttering/choppy on mac

    - by smashtastic
I have had a few issues with bluray playback on mac with the following details: 2.4 GHz Core 2 duo NVidia 8600 m GT 256 mb ram 4 GB ram OSX Lion 10.7.5 Using VLC 2.03 for playback Files either mounted as a disc or stored on hardisk. I have tried various sources and playback is always choppy and stutters. Where the video and audio pause for a few seconds before resuming ok. If I transcode the same bluray files into mkv files play back is seemless. I am not applying any compression and the resolution is the same as is the nominal file size. For a recent example 11.2 GB m2ts and 10.5 GB mkv file. This stuttering and choppy playback of bluray files through VLC has occured for a number of different sources. For each of these sources transcoding to mkv solves the stuttering/choppiness. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

  • How do I audit CD/DVD tray opening events in Windows 7?

    - by MetaHyperBolic
Since installing Windows 7, the entire office has experienced random CD tray openings, sometimes while we are in the office, sometimes not. On my PC, I have two disc-reading devices, but only the top one ever slides open. I have found nothing in the event logs to that looks appropriate, even going to them right after I saw my own tray slide open all by itself. Although it's not hurting anything (that I can tell), I'd like to know what is going on. To that end, are there any useful ways to audit these events?

  • Netbook won't boot after using EasyBCD

    - by TNC
I have an Asus T91MT netbook on which I used to have Windows 7 Home Premium and Ubuntu 10.10 installed (dual boot). After trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu is no longer able to boot, so I tried to uninstall Ubuntu completely and then reinstall it. Following these directions, I tried using EasyBCD to bypass the GRUB2 bootloader so that after uninstalling, it would automatically boot into Windows 7. However, after doing the "install BCD" step and restarting, I got the following message: Windows failed to start... File: \Boot\BCD; Status: 0xc0000098; Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry. I'm currently trying to create a USB stick of the Windows Installation disc but in the mean time, I can only boot from a Ubuntu USB stick. Is there anything I can do from within Ubuntu to fix this? Or does anyone have any other suggestions/solutions?

I dropped my hp laptop (I have windows 7). There was a blue screen with the cursor. It took about an hour or two for the startup repair screen to appear. Then it says to wait at least an hour. I've been charging my laptop for around a day now and the same screen, with a bar with blue moving, is still there. It says it's fixing disc errors. What can I do to get to the windows screen with usernames and pictures/fix it? thanks.

  • How to un-partition a drive on windows 7

    - by Michael Rentmeister
I bought this laptop used from a friend. The laptop has 500gb of storage; however, the drive is partioned. The C: drive has an allocated space of 50gb whereas the partition has 396gb allocated to it. How do i either take some of the space from the partition and move it to the C: drive, or get rid of the partition? I've done some searching and people say I'm supposed to be able to use "Disc Management" to "delete volume," but when i right click on the partition the "delete volume" is not enabled. Here is a picture:

  • Server 2003 saying unlicensed

    - by nat
I came in this morning to our windows 2003 server - running only SQL server 2005 saying it was unlicensed. When logged straight onto the box as soon as I got past the login, it popped up the click yes to license, did that and it would just loop back around to the login. It wouldn't turn off, couldn't remote to it, after a power off and reboot, it magically decided it was in fact licensed. It didn't appear to be low on disc space or other resources. Logs not showing anything out of the ordinary. Has anyone else experienced this, or might have an idea as to what just happened? Any help much appreciated.

  • DVD Drive Has Stopped Recognizing Discs

    - by ricree
My DVD drive no longer recognizes dvds, but does recognize CD-ROMs. When a DVD is in the drive, the computer continues to act as though there is no disc in the drive. However, when a normal CD-ROM is in the drive, it appears to work normally. I have tested on several discs, both video and game, and the behavior is consistent. I have also tested this on both Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.10, and the issue remains the same. Can anyone recommend a way to fix this?

  • ObjectContext.SaveChanges() fails with SQL CE

    - by David Veeneman
I am creating a model-first Entity Framework 4 app that uses SQL CE as its data store. All is well until I call ObjectContext.SaveChanges() to save changes to the entities in the model. At that point, SaveChanges() throws a System.Data.UpdateException, with an inner exception message that reads as follows: Server-generated keys and server-generated values are not supported by SQL Server Compact. I am completely puzzled by this message. Any idea what is going on and how to fix it? Thanks. • Categorising a large mysql result with php while?

    - by Ryan
    I'm using the following to grab my large result set from a mysql db: $discresult = 'SELECT t.id, t.subject, t.topicimage, t.topictype, c.user_id, c.disc_id FROM topics AS t LEFT JOIN collections AS c ON t.id=c.disc_id WHERE c.user_id='.$user_id; $userdiscs = $db->query($discresult) or error('Error.', __FILE__, __LINE__, $db->error()); This returns a list of all items that the user owns. I'm then needing to categorise these items based on the value of the "topictype" column, which Im currently doing by using: <h2>Category 1</h2> <?php while ($cur_img = mysql_fetch_array($userdiscs)) { if ($cur_img['topictype']=="cat-1") { if ($cur_img['topicimage']!="") { echo "<div><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\"><img src=\"".$cur_img['topicimage']."\" style=\"width:60px; height: 60px\" /></a><br /><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\">".$cur_img['subject']."</a></div>"; } else { echo "<div><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\"><img src=\"img/no-disc-art.jpg\" style=\"width:60px; height: 60px\" /></a><br /><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\">".$cur_img['subject']."</a></div>"; } } } mysql_data_seek($userdiscs, 0); ?> <h2>Category 2</h2> <?php while ($cur_img = mysql_fetch_array($userdiscs)) { if ($cur_img['topictype']=="cat-2") { if ($cur_img['topicimage']!="") { echo "<div><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\"><img src=\"".$cur_img['topicimage']."\" style=\"width:60px; height: 60px\" /></a><br /><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\">".$cur_img['subject']."</a></div>"; } else { echo "<div><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\"><img src=\"img/no-disc-art.jpg\" style=\"width:60px; height: 60px\" /></a><br /><a href=\"viewtopic.php?id=".$cur_img['id']."\" title=\"".$cur_img['subject']."\">".$cur_img['subject']."</a></div>"; } } } mysql_data_seek($userdiscs, 0); ?> This works fine when I rinse and repeat the code, but as the site grows I expect I'll run into problems as the number of "topictype" options increases (expecting around 30 categories). I dont want to have to make seperate queries for each categorised group of discs either, as Id eventually have 30 queries being run as categories increase, so hoping to hear some suggestions or alternative approaches :) Thanks
