• Compare a variable that can have numeric or string as value

  I have a variable named Seconds_Behind_Master from one of my scripts. The problem is that this variable can either have a numeric value or can also take a string NULL as its value. Now, when I try to execute this script in shell it gets executed but gives a warning like this: [: Illegal number: NULL I believe it is due to the fact that in this case the value is NULL but when it compares it with numeral value 60 it gives this warning. How can I rectify it?   This is related to question 19245, in that one of the responders answered the question in an awesome way, and very VERY clear to any newbie. Now here is a question that i can't seem to figure. i wrote a script for starting the vmware firefox plugin (don't worry. i gave that up and now run vBox VERY happily. i left vmware for my servers :) ) I needed to start the plugin as sudo, but i also needed to pass an argument (password) to it, that happen to be the same. So, if my password was Hello123, the command would be: sudo ./myscript.sh hi other Hello123 running from command line, the script would ask for my sudo password and then run. i wanted to capture THAT password and pass it as well. i also wanted to run graphically, so i tried gksudo, and there is an option -p that returns the password for variable assignment. well, that was a nightmare, because i would still get prompted for the original sudo: see below Find UserName vUser=$USER Find password (and hopefully enable sudo) vP=gksudo -p -D somedescriptiontext echo Execute command gksudo ./myscript.sh hi $vUser $vP and i still get prompted twice. so my question is tri-fold: is there a variable i can use for the password, just like there is one for user, $USER? is there a different way i should be assigning the value resulting of the command i have in $vP? i am wondering if executing the way i have it, does it in an uninitiated session and not the current one, since i am getting some addtl warning type errors on some variables blah blah i tried using Zenity to just capture the text, but then of course, i couldn't pass that value to sudo, so i could only use as a parameter, which puts me back in 2 prompts. So we're a couple guys who've been making small flash games, and now we want to go mobile, and there seem to be lots of options. Does anyone here have experience with one or more of these platforms to tell us the pros and cons of each? Corona AIR 3 Rhodes Could someone with experience compare and contrast these to each other and native development? We want to cast the widest net with the least re-work so we'd like to target just Android and iPhone, and we'd like it to be an actual app in the market instead of just a mobile website. We have experience in Actionscript, Javascript, and C#.

• Why don't we use browser detection and platform-specific CSS?

  Nowadays, the common phenomena is to develop a website for a browser and then corresponding apps for Android phones, iPhone, tablets and so on. Since all the platforms come with a browser, why aren't companies using CSS to accommodate them? Surely we can detect from the request which browser was used and from which platform the request came. Reading those values, why don't we just implement the corresponding CSS for different platforms. Like we do for IE, Chrome and Safari. This way we can use the platforms' browser capabilities and don't need to develop subsequent apps for a platform.

• Unity gizmos vs. referenced game objects

  I'm designing a Unity script that I intend to be highly reusable and as easy as possible to setup within the editor. To this end, a number of properties of this script really need some kind of visual representation on screen. It is an unresolved question to me whether the design of the script should require references to placeholder game objects, OR just Vector3's and float's that have associated gizmos drawn for them. Normally a gizmo would be a natural choice, except that Unity gizmos are not directly manipulable (as far as I can tell). Because of this shortcoming I'm having to consider whether depending on references to placeholder game objects is a more designer-friendly approach ultimately, in spite of the extra setup required, and that it might be counter-intuitive when the placeholder game objects disappear at run-time (which my script would do). Is there a community standard or preference here in this case? Can a Unity-experienced game programmer / designer speak to which approach they feel is more intuitive or more convenient to setup, when using a 3rd party script? Or is this just splitting hairs as long as I ship an example prefab with my script?

• Differentiating between user script input formats

  I have a .NET project at work that provides a couple of (Iron)Python scripts to the customers, to allow them to customize the output of the program. The application generates code for certain machines, and supports a couple of different formats. Until recently, we only provided a script for one format. We're expanding upon that to include support for the others. If the user is using a script, they select their input script before generating the output code. A script designed for Format1 output is going to cause errors if they're trying to generate Format2 output. I need to deal with this. One option would just be to let the customers use common sense, and if they load the wrong script it will just fail, or worse, produce inaccurate data. I'm inclined to provide a little more protection than that. At the moment I'm considering putting a shebang-style comment line at the top of the script, ala: # OUTPUT - Format1 If the user tries to run a Format2 process with a Format1 script, it will warn them. Alternatively I could create different file extensions for the input scripts that vary by type. The file-type comment approach helps prevent the script from actually loading improperly, at the cost of failing to warn the user until they've already selected it, via a dialog box. Using different file extensions would allow me to cut down on visual clutter when providing a File Dialog, but doesn't actually stop them from loading the wrong script. So I'm really not sure if the right approach is to just leave it alone, or provide some safeguards.

  Everyday at work when I come in I have to sign into a time-sheet. It's timestamped so I can't just say I came in at whatever time when I didn't. I want to write a script that runs on login (windows 7) and fills out the time I come in and such and another that says the time I'm leaving when I log out.   If a website works in Firefox 4 and in Google Chrome 10, what could potentially cause that website not to work (broken layout or broken JavaScript) in IE9? What limitations and differences does IE9 have, aside from vendor-specific stylesheet rules? Yes, that is a painfully vague question — that's because I am not asking this question from the perspective of someone with a specific problem! • Will not supporting IE or older browsers drive away potential visitors/users of my site? [closed]

  Normally a SO browser but this question doesn't fit there, hopefully it fits here. I just want to ask from web designers' point of view if it's wrong to not care about supporting Internet Explorer or older browsers. The site I'm designing looks great in all browsers except IE9-. There are certain things that IE doesn't support or behave like other browsers; webkit stuff, some CSS styles, drop-and-drop files from OS etc etc, but it all works great in Safari, FireFox, Chrome etc. Should I be that concerned? I know there are several people that use IE, but it's limitations have just been causing me more work by having to come up with workarounds. From what I've read, many of the issues I've been having should be solved with IE10, but not everybody keeps up to date. I know of several people who are still using IE6! Again, I'm hoping this is the right place to ask a question like this, and if not, please point me to the right stack exchange site instead of just downvoting me. Thanks! EDIT: Upon further research.... So far this year, IE(all versions) and Chrome have been neck and neck as the top, with IE only squeaking by Chrome, and FireFox a close 3rd. But looking at the top 10 browsers, IE6 doesn't even show up on this list in which the lowest percentage is 1.92%. Source : http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php?year=2012&month=7 Having a look at this other site, IE6 shows up in 11th place out of 12, just before "Other" http://www.sitepoint.com/browser-trends-february-2012/ This makes me a little more wary of not spending more time on IE compatibility. However, my site will not be going to a live beta until October or November, and I'm hoping that IE10 will have more features coded into it. Currently, I've written my upload page which is a "drag-and-drop files from the OS" type to simply display "IE is not supported", leaving no other option for IE users to upload pictures because I've spent so much time writing the uploader which does many things other than just upload the files. I will be changing this kinda cold "Access Denied" to a suggestion to upgrade, or install other browsers, with download links for each. Big thanks for the posts here and the interesting links!

• Game Design - When to separate out pieces into static libraries?

  I am developing a game that has a lot of platform generic pieces. I am wanting to separate out various pieces into static libraries and I would like to know what other devs do. I am considering targeting other platforms and I want to maintain an much platform neutrality as I can. I have a lot of generic level data in C++ classes. THinking all of the level data could go into a single static library. I have a lot of generic OpenGL code that I think could also go into a single static library. I am already using CMAKE for some and XCode 4.5 for the Apple specific pieces. What do other devs do to stay platform neutral? Does anyone use Eclipse instead of XCode and Visual Studio on Windows?

• Syntax error in Maya Python Script [on hold]

  Ok this error is immensly frustrating as it is obviously a simple syntax issue. Basically I've written two lines of maya script in python designed to create a list of the names of all the joints of a model currently selected in the model viewer. Here are the two lines of script: import maya.cmds joints = ls(selection = true, type = 'joint') Upon compiling the code the script editor is saying there is a syntax error in the second line, but I do not see any reason why this code should not execute?

• When should I decide what language and platforms I will use for a project?

  During your development process, when is the recommended phase to decide what platform to aim for, and what language to use? I figured that it would be better to choose at the beginning what would be your target platform, as it would affect your design decisions, and limit the language you are supposed to use. However, I have heard several stories of people developing their game with whatever language they were the most confident with, and then porting it to the various platforms. • Options for 2D Web/iPhone/Android, with Test Framework

  I would like to make a 2D game with one codebase that runs on iPhone, Android, and web (any flavour of web -- HTML5, Flash, Silverlight, etc.) What are my options? I should be able to write my code once, and run it anywhere. I also absolutely need the ability to write unit tests (or write a unit-testing framework) -- I cannot make sizable games without testing. Unity is good, but unity is 3d; even with hacks, the graphical assets will still be 3d. I'm after 2d, not 3d. (If you need a Mac or separate licensing for the Mac part, that's okay.)

• Crossbrowser issue - navigation-menu [closed]

  I'm having issues with crossbrowser compatibility on my navigationmenu for my site. The issue is that it's not working as expected in MSIE. It bugs out on mouseover. The site is run with wordpress and the theme is called GreenChilli. It's a free theme from MyThemeShop and they don't seam to be very active in resolving free theme issues on their forum.   So I'm trying to create a bash script that looks for two words in my syslog file. Then I want the script to print out how many times those two words have appeared. Also I want it to print it out for every hour of the day. So like if the word dog appeared 4 times during the first hour of today, it says Hour one, dog 4. Finally at the end of the script I want it to print out how many times those words appeared all day. So: the problem is: There is no way to make shortcut using bat. Only using third-party applications... Or/and using scripts.   I'm doing work that involves writing code and managing developers in a "special projects" division of a large company. I'd like to define my role better and figure out if there's an industry standard term for what I do, so that it will be easier for me to research best practices and work on a career path What I do all day: A macro that connects an Excel sheet to an Access database is acting funny; I get called in to figure out what's happening and debug it. Someone needs data extracted from a bunch of files on Sharepoint. I figure out a client-side solution because I'm not authorized to do anything server-side and getting IT to do anything would take several months and need a business case. A manager wants a new data entry tool for their team. I interview the manager and team members to work out the functional requirements, then design/develop/test the application. Someone needs a VBA script to crunch some data for their presentation that's due in two hours. I drop everything I'm doing to hack out a quick script and run the analysis, without much in the way of testing. A developer has been hired to build a database for one of the teams, since I'm working on too many different things and don't have time to take this project on in the timeframe required. I direct his work and push him to meet certain deadlines, interview stakeholders to get more info that will help him figure out how to build the necessary forms, and modify the functional requirements of the database to fit in the timeframe. Someone wants to load a set of data into a GIS system and set up an ongoing refresh and reporting of this data set. I facilitate the conversation between the GIS developers and the owners of this data set, and design a demo application as proof of concept. It's kind of an "all-purpose programming and IT management" position, but it's not officially IT because the company has an actual IT department with a rigorously defined system of submitting requests, developing code, and managing projects. What I do, I guess, is more of a handyman job, where stuff falls to me because I'm the geekiest one in the room. Is there a standard term in the software world for what I do?

• Phishing attack stuck with jsp loginAction.do page? [closed]

  I 'm testing a phishing website on a staged replica of an jsp web-application. I'm doing the usual attack which involves changing the post and action field of source code to divert to my own written jsp script capture the logins and redirect the victim to the original website. It looks easy but trust me its has been me more then 2 weeks I cannot write the logins to the text file. I have tested the jsp page on my local wamp server it works fine. In staged when I click on the ok button for user/password field I'm taken to loginAction.do script. I checked this using tamper data add on on firefox. The only way I was able to make my script run was to use burp proxy intercept the request and change action parameter to refer my uploaded script. I want to know what does an loginAction.do? I have googled it - its quite common to see it in jsp application. I have checked the code; there is nothing that tells me why the page always point to the .do script instead of mine. Is there some kind of redirection in tomcat configuration. I like to know. I'm unable to exploit this attack vector? I need the community help

• Why most use Cygwin and not Uwin?

  Most academic researchers I know target just *nix, and rely on Cygwin to make their applications available on Windows. I have tried many of these projects and always found them too unstable for serious use when running on Cygwin. Uwin looks like a promising alternative to Cygwin. I haven't tried it yet, but I found several comments that it is faster and more stable. However, I haven't seen any use of Uwin to support running *nix apps on Windows. What are the social and/or technical reasons behind Uwin's lack of popularity?
