I know a bit of Perl and Python and I am looking to learn programming in more depth so that once I get the hang of it I can start developing applications and then websites. I would like to know of an algorithm (sequence of steps :)) that could describe my approach towards learning programming in general. I have posted small questions on Perl/Python and I have recieved great help from everyone. Note:- I am not in a hurry to learn. I know it takes time and that's fine. Please give any suggestions you think are valid. Also, please don't push me to learn Lisp, Haskell etc - I am a beginner.

  • When to Use workflow engines?

    I'm totally new to this concept from design perspective. I've worked in past on some of the workflow engines as programmer but never had a clarity on why we chose the work-flow engines in first place. And as programmer I know that there are at least 100 ways to do anything when you are writing code but only few of the ways are the best! I still don't understand which use cases are best solved by workflow engines (or rather their concept) than designing a good DI enabled application. I'm looking for any general characteristics of domain-neutral use cases, where work-flow engines are one of the the best options. So my question is: What are general characteristics of a requirement which can be taken as a signal for opting for a good workflow engine and coding around it? Cheers!

  • Trying to find resources to learn how to test software [closed]

    First off, yes this is a general question, and I'd be perfectly happy to move this to another portion of SE, but I didn't see a more fitting sub. Basically, I am hoping a more experienced QA tester can come along and really fill in some basics for me. So far, websites seem to be sparse in terms of explaining languages involved, basic practices, etc. So, I'm sorry in advance if this is too general, but towards the end of this post I ask some specific questions if it's just absolutely unacceptable to speak in general terms. I just landed a position as Junior Systems and QA Engineer with a social media startup. Their QA and testing is almost nonexistent, so if I do a good job, I imagine I'll find a lot of bugs and have a secure role in the business. I'm pretty good with the systems aspect of my role, but I need to learn more about the QA and testing aspects. We run hardware that's touchscreen based - the user can use and interact with the devices. So, in terms of my QA role, in the short term, I need to build scripts to test the hardware/software as a 'user' to try to uncover bugs. First off, what language should these scripts be written in? Does anyone have some examples? What about the longer term 'automated testing'? I'm familiar with regression testing as the developer adds in new features, sure, but the 50,000 other types of testing, not so much. Most of our hardware runs dotnet/C# code, with some of the servers running Java - but I don't expect to need to run tests on the Java side at this point. I hope to meet with one developer today and try to get a good idea of the output from the hardware so that I can 'mock' this data that gets sent to servers, to try to bugtest. Eventually, we will be moving the hardware to be closer to where I live and work, so that I can test virtually and on real hardware. So a lot of the bugs we're dealing with now are like this: the Local Server, which kiosks report their data to gets updated from the kiosks, but the remote server does not. Or, vis versa when the user registers on a kiosk, the remote server updates but the local server does not. But yeah, without much more detail, I imagine a lot of this info isn't helpful. I've bought a book "How Google Tests Software", but it's really a book more about 'how their software testing is different from Microsoft'. It doesn't teach how to test so much as why their methods are better. Does anyone have a good book that I can buy? An ebook maybe? My local Barnes and Noble kinda had a terrible selection. I also figure a book from 2005 is not necessarily that good either.

  • Can't seem to redirect from a ViewScoped constructor.

    I'm having trouble redirecting from a view scoped bean in the case that we don't have the required info for the page in question. The log entry in the @PostContruct is visible in the log right before a NPE relating to the view trying to render itself instead of following my redirect. Why is it ignoring the redirect?     I'm looking for a server software product that: Allows my users to share large files with: The general public securely to 1 or more people (notification via email, optionally with a token that gives them x period of time to download) Allows anyone in the general public to share files with my users. Perhaps by invitation. Has to be user friendly enough to allow my users to use this with out having to bug me as the admin. It needs to be a system that we can install on our own server (we don't want shared data sitting on anyone else's server) A web based solution. Using some kind or secure comms channel would be good too, eg, ssh Files to share could be over 1 GB. I found the question below. WebDav does not sound user friendly enough: http://serverfault.com/questions/86878/recommendations-for-a-secure-and-simple-dropbox-system I've done a lot of searching, but I can't get the search terms right. There are too many services that provide this, but I want something we can install on our own server. A last resort would be to roll my own. Any ideas appreciated. Glen EDIT Sorry Tom and Jeff but Glen specifically says that he's looking for a 'product' so given that I specialise in this field thought that my expertise in this area may have been of use to him. I don't see how him writing services is going to be easy for him to maintain going forward (large IT admin overhead) or simple for his users and the general public to work with.

  • How to find out where or if MYSQL5 logs are stored on a machine WHM/Cpanel

    I have a WHM/Cpanel re-seller hosting account on a virtual private server (Linux). I have root access to the machine via SSH I am trying to locate a file that contains information that will help me to determine which users have accessed what db and from which hosts. I would imagine this kind of data is stored in a log file somewhere. The MySQL page says: The general query log - Established client connections and statements received from clients See: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/server-logs.html It also says: By default, all log files are created in the mysqld data directory. So, I am am NOT asking where are the general query log logs stored, (cos I expect I will get answers saying "it depends") Please help me work out: "How can go about finding out where MySQL general query log logs are stored on a linux machine" Couple of things i've already tried: I looked at /etc/my.cnf it was a tiny file that only contained the following info: [mysqld] skip-bdb skip-innodb set-variable = max_connections=500 safe-show-database ~ ~ I have looked in: /var/lib/mysql/ But I could not see any log-like file names in that directory. Any clues on this would be most welcome.

  • Logging hurts MySQL performance - but, why?

    I'm quite surprised that I can't see an answer to this anywhere on the site already, nor in the MySQL documentation (section 5.2 seems to have logging otherwise well covered!) If I enable binlogs, I see a small performance hit (subjectively), which is to be expected with a little extra IO -- but when I enable a general query log, I see an enormous performance hit (double the time to run queries, or worse), way in excess of what I see with binlogs. Of course I'm now logging every SELECT as well as every UPDATE/INSERT, but, other daemons record their every request (Apache, Exim) without grinding to a halt. Am I just seeing the effects of being close to a performance "tipping point" when it comes to IO, or is there something fundamentally difficult about logging queries that causes this to happen? I'd love to be able to log all queries to make development easier, but I can't justify the kind of hardware it feels like we'd need to get performance back up with general query logging on. I do, of course, log slow queries, and there's negligible improvement in general usage if I disable this. (All of this is on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, MySQLd 5.1.49, but research suggests this is a fairly universal issue)

  • Diagnosing linux issues with ipod syncing in Ubuntu

    Issue: I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10 with a 5th generation Ipod 60 GB Black video classic. In general, it seems that Ubuntu can always detect the usb hd and displays it on my desktop. However, some applications seem to detect the ipod (e.g. Rythymbox and gtkpod do but Banshee does not) and some don't. I narrowed down the banshee issue to a bug that requires Nautilus to be restarted (although it would be nice to not have to do this). Also, Whenever I sync between these applications, it appears that everything is working fine during the sync but when I disconnect the ipod and browse, all of the songs seem to be there but the playlists are not. If I reconnect the ipod, in banshee specifically it sees the space usage as "other". What I am looking for is some way to at least understand what is and is not working OR directions to some where that can help me learn what's going on. I have already tried: -IRC. Either the channel is too general (e.g. #ubuntu) or no one is ever one (e.g. #banshee) -The web. Most of what I've found is too specific to one particular bug or too general. Any thoughts?

  • Are there any disadvantages of having a "free fall sensor" on a hard disk drive?

    This is a general question that came out of a specific comparison between the Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEKT and Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BJKT (which is the same as the former but with a free fall sensor.) Note: I'm not asking for a review or appraisal of these specific drives, as the general question does apply on other brands as well. Though your input would help my decision. To break down the general question in order to answer it, I would be looking for comments on things like: if it's necessary to have differing physical dimensions between free fall sensor drives and those without, e.g. does it make it any thicker, and therefore reduce the systems where it can be installed - particularly smaller laptops? does it actually make the system less reliable - because of false alarms whereby the drive thought the laptop was falling but it wasn't? I suppose that the fact that a manufacturer produces both drives with and without free fall sensors says something about possible disadvantages. Or it could be standard marketing techniques where by making drives with and without results in larger sales volume than just those with the feature alone.

  • Why does my ftp(e)s server fails like half of the time

    I have this discussion at work regarding our ftp server running via vsftpd. Initially, we have opted to serve ftpes instead of sftp because this seemed the most flexible and straightforward solution for our server to have secure file transmission. Afterwards, our ftp server seems to be a source of issues for our end users. Half of the time, users complain about not working ftp connections. I must say, i tested our FTP trough different infrastructures (=in the field, at random times at random places) and indeed, sometimes behind some configurations (=no idea how they are configured, because the 'field' testing), i recieve errors. Some of the are: Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing (filezilla) Furthermore, behind my basic home configuration, everything seems to be running fine. I (think I) did all the basic configuration checks (passive mode?, firewall for all ports?, ...) and can't seem to find the source. Being a bunch of techies at our small office, yet knowing nothing about infrastructure, some start suggesting that ftps protocol could be the source of issues. ("No, i only knew sftp so far" "Ftps is not widespread"). I, however, strongly doubt this hypothesis, since reading around on the www, asking questions on serverfault, everyone seems to deny this. I am creating a shared object on the server side, and it seems to be creating it successfully. However, when I make changes to the object via the client (type a message), the SYNC event fires, but the content within the shared object remains empty.     I was wondering if anyone knows of a caching proxy specifically for dealing with API responses? Ideally, I'd be able to declare what caching policy to use for different API semantics, e.g. cache album art for 1 day, cache favorite tweets for 5 minutes, cache map tiles forever, except invalidate when this other API is called. I know about using Apache, Squid, etc for caching in general -- I'm just hoping for something with nicer usage semantics by restricting the design goal to dealing with APIs rather than the web in general.

I use staic library project added to app project as direct dependency (target - general - direct dependecies) and all works OK, but categories. A category defined in static library is not working in app. So my question is how to add static library with some categories into other project? And in general, what is best practice to use in app project code from other projects?

    So I read MSDN and Stack Overflow. I understand what the Action Delegate does in general but it is not clicking no matter how many examples I do. In general, the same goes for the idea of delegates. So here is my question. When you have a function like this: public GetCustomers(Action<IEnumerable<Customer>,Exception> callBack) { } What is this, and what should I pass to it?
