  There are many open-source libraries that can be compiled with Visual Studio. I'm porting a program from Linux to Windows, but it depends on a number of libraries. I don't know what the best practices regarding libraries are on Windows. On Linux, these libraries are typically part of the distribution. To use sqlite on Debian, for example, you need only to install libsqlite3-dev and the include files and libraries (both static and dynamic) are automatically installed and available to your program. If you need a different version than your distribution supplies, you can compile it in your home directory, install it to ~/include and ~/lib, and set the appropriate environment variables so that your compiler includes those directories in its search path. What is the best way to use libraries that are distributed as source on Windows? If I link dynamically rather than statically, is there an easy way to copy required DLLs into the output directory to ease redistribution (assuming license requirements are met)?

  We are implementing a warehouse management system atop an open source stack (Java, web services & friends). In this system, we want to integrate many mobile devices which should also be capable of adequate online/offline functionality, e.g. preparing database inserts while a mobile device is temporarily unconnected, and performing them on the backend database when reconnected. For a .NET stack, Microsoft Sync Framework would be a perfect solution, e.g. to do database replication and hoarding.   I need to perform static source analysis on Java code. Ideally, I want the system to work out of the box without much modification from me. For example, I have used Antlr in the past, but I spent a lot of time building grammar files and still didn't get what I wanted. I want to be able to parse a java file and have return the character position of say: Character position start and end of a Java block comment Character position start and end of a Java class file Character position start and end of a Java method declaration, signature, and implementation. It looks like Antlr will do that, but I have yet to finish a grammar that actually gives me the positions of the code I need. Does anyone have that complete Antlr grammar and Java code to give the character positions of the parts in the Java source.

  I've got a Rails app that's been running live for some time, and I'm planning to open source it in the near future. I'm wondering how dangerous it is to leave the session key store secret in source control while the app is live. If it's dangerous, how do people usually handle this problem? I'd guess that it's easiest to just move the string to a text file that's ignored by the SCM, and read it in later. Just for clarity, I'm talking about this: # Your secret key for verifying cookie session data integrity. # If you change this key, all old sessions will become invalid! # Make sure the secret is at least 30 characters and all random, # no regular words or you'll be exposed to dictionary attacks. Install these packages without verification [y/N]? Well, you can always install it. But, I can't install from the ubuntu software GUI. Which require trusted source. So, 1. How to force the GUI to install untrusted package? 2. Should I configure GPG to receive some public keys? (I've already installed ubuntu-keyring, debian-keyring, but it still untrusted) 3. Should I configure GPG to receive unknown keys from some specific keyservers, automatically?

• Apt getting wrong nginx source

  I'm working on updating Nginx on my server from 0.7.65 (Ubuntu 10.04 repo) to 1.0.2 (from the PPA). I installed it just fine, but I would like to add/activate some modules. I found this tutorial for doing it with dpkg, which works well for ensuring that it maintains the defaults that apt-get uses for things like install location, and would like to use it to do the same for 1.0.2. However, when I run apt-get source nginx, it downloads the 0.7 source from the main repo, and when I run apt-get source nginx-full or apt-get source nginx-common, it selects nginx instead. Is there any way I can force it to get the source from the PPA, so that I can use dpkg and not have to deal with hacking in the Debian folder that dpkg requires?

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Mac, but I can't get it to boot with default mac bootloader or rEFI. It shows up as "Windows" On the mac bootloader and shows up as "Linux" on rEFI. I'm not sure where should I install the bootloader to during installation. Here's my partition table: sda : Hard drive manufacturer name sda0: Mac partition sda1: ... sda4: SWAP sda5: Ubuntu And I have installed the bootloader on sda5. Should I install it on sda instead? I'm afraid this will replace the default Mac OS X bootloader and I won't be able to go into the Mac side again. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  Hi i just installed ubuntu 12.10 on my ssd(picture below) and i set up my home directory to the 1 TB disc(picture below). I want in general use the ssd as my root folder as u can see, and install only the apps which are necessary. Games and other stuff goes to the 1 TB disc, but this disc shows me in gparted a usage of 14 GB on a freshly install, whats wrong? What about the ssd, do i have to manually optimize things? thx Alex PS: What if i want to install a Game to my home folder, i heard sth. of a symbol link, how to do that?

I'm facing an issue where NAT NVI rules that I have configured are not enabled after a reload of the router, regardless of the fact that they are present in the startup-config.   I know there are problems (and have been for quite some time) with the diNovo Edge keyboard. The solution could be found easily and often you can use the on-screen keyboard to fix it. Now I'm installing Ubuntu from scratch and the only keyboard I have is my diNovo, am I screwed? You are able to get to System Config during the install process and from there to Accessibility menu where you usually can start the on-screen keyboard. This doesn't work, no keyboard in sight... What if I can do some ninja copy-paste with the mouse?? Nope, no pasting allowed in the feilds: username, password, etc. Is there a chance I can fix this somehow within the .iso file before I create the bootable USB drive I use to install from? Or do I have to buy a keyboard to be able to install Ubuntu?

• “No Network Devices Available” for BCM43241(SDIO) after fresh install of 13.10

  I have a laptop vaio duo 13 which has a broadcom 43241 wireless card. My problem is similar to this one Broadcom Wi-Fi Adapter not recognized . I tried to install the driver brcmfmac(SDIO) here http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/brcm80211 and copied the nvram to /lib/firmware/brcm as the page tells, but this didn't work. Most questions I searched are about br43 such as How to Install Broadcom Wireless Drivers (BCM43xx) . I tried part of solution like unblock all in rfkill, put an # in front of blacklist bcm43xx, but none worked. I didn't uninstall or install any drivers such as b43-installer, b43legacy-installer, bcmwl-kernel-source (only tried b43-fwcutter) because they are not compatible with bcm43241. Above is all information I can provide for help. Thanks.

  I'm encountering a long pause during unattended (preseeded) install of precise server via pxe. The install eventually works, but appears to just sit there for 20 or 30 minutes after it authenticates the mirror. There is nothing in the logs during this time, even with full debug. • Security considerations for a default install?

  So with an old burned install CD of Feisty Fawn I went through the process of completely formatting the Windows OS and installing Ubuntu on an old XP laptop. I then went through the online upgrade to 10.4 LTS, only installing the gnome desktop environment package in the process. My (admittedly very open) question is that in this state and online, what security considerations do I have to immediately make for the default install? I understand that a lot of this swings on my intended use of the server, but just sitting there online what risks is it exposed to (this obviously goes far beyond the realm of linux, but I am not sure how these risks are accommodated in the default install). For example, I believe there is a firewall installed with Ubuntu but by default it allows all traffic. Any other guidelines would be much appreciated. Thanks

  I first tried to install Diablo 2 LOD from an iso image using acetone iso. However, after acetone iso mounted the image, it said "Please install the labelled disc". I then tried with Gmount, and, following advice I received from some forums, I attempted to create mount points and then install; after it mounted the image, it installed the first three disc images but not the expansion. When I tried to play, it told me to insert the labelled disc, even though the iso image was still mounted with Gmount. How can I resolve this problem?

• Installing 12.04 Ubuntu Studio on VMware Workstation 7, won't install VMware Tools

  I'm attempting to install Ubuntu Studio 12.04 on my laptop by using VMware Workstation 7.1.5, and I've encountered a problem. The install goes well until the installation of Ubuntu has completed and the installation of VMware Tools starts; after that it just stops. I have waited about an hour and a half and nothing has changed. The installation is on VMware Easy Install, and I am running Windows Vista 32-bit with 3 GB system RAM and 2 GB of RAM on the virtual machine. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!
