  I have a Debian (squeeze) desktop, and I need to use a D-Link 150 USB Wireless Network Adapter. So far I've done this: $ lsusb ... Bus 001 Device 006: ID 2001:3c18 D-Link Corp. ... After looking for a solution in google, I found that I needed to install the following package: firmware-ralink_0.28+squeeze1_all.deb I've installed it, but Debian doesn't want to find the adapter. When I run lsmod, I can't find what I'm supposed to find: rt2870sta Can you point me in the right direction?

• When should .local be used?

  So, I've set up a few Win Servs in my time and always did the .local thing when there was a router that sepearated my internal from external networks. Now that I'm setting up an *nix box for the first time, does this concept still apply? Do I still want my FQDNs (/etc/hostname) to show .local or .com for all my machines (mixed: linux servers, win workstations) inside of my network. This question comes in context of always having Active Directory hold my hand every step of the way, where now I'm setting up an DNS machine manually.

• rsync --link-dest behaviour when run as sudo

  In order to create regular backups, I'm using rsync together with --link-dest so as to create hard-links for unchanged files. For example: rsync -ax \ --partial --delete --delete-excluded --inplace \ --exclude-from=/tmp/temp_excludes \ --link-dest=/Volumes/Backup/current \ /Users /Volumes/Backup/2012-06-25 This works very well as long as I start the process from my normal user account. Though as soon as I start the process using sudo it behaves erradically, meaning that rsync copies all the unchanged files instead of hard-linking them. Since sudo modifies the environment, I've already also tried sudo -E in conjunction with making sure that my sudoers file has the corresponding option set. Well, that didn't work either. So, the question is, how can I run rsync using sudo? Whereas the above example only shows a backup of the Users directory, I also need to backup some system files that I can only access as root.

• Is it possible to command a common router without using the web interface?

  Some background The internet arrangement in my student home is really weird. There is one ethernet outlet and several wifi hotspots. Either way requires a login through a web site to get internet access. This is annoying as each device needs to login seperately and with a PS3 for example, it is impossible to get connected at all since the web login procedure doesn't work. Therefore I have installed a D-Link DIR-635 router which is connected to the ethernet outlet. It has DHCP enabled so it uses NAT, but whatever it is connected to also uses NAT and I've read this should not work. A fellow student tried it with an Apple Airport but that keeps giving errors related to NAT after NAT. Anyway my setup does work so bonus points if you can clarify this. I need to login to the web site I mentioned earlier with any device, after which all devices in my LAN have connectivity. This is great. Except... In short From time to time, I lose internet connectivity and my D-Link DIR-635 router needs to do a DHCP renew. I can do this via the web interface but my life would be easier if I could just run a cmd file which tells my router to do this without all the hassle. This would setup a connection to my router and execute the proper command. I have tried googling but couldn't find much helpful stuff.

  I created a wireless network inside a D-Link DIR-301 connected to a Mac, What I want is that every device to connect to this network if the browser automatically opens instead of the default homepage, it redirects to my website already set in the localhost of the machine which also has the router attached. I'd also like to see that instead of the IP to connect to the site, there will be a "fake" link. What do you advise me? how can I proceed? I state that I am a bit novice in this field, being more a web programmer.

• .htaccess - Simulating virtual host wrong link to Parent Directory in Directory Listing

  I have a domain dedicated for my local server (.dev), and an .htaccess file which redirects requests like http://folder.dev/subfolder/ to /htdocs/folder/subfolder. It works great and all, except for one minor issue. When I have the Directory Listing enabled, I can access all the folders, subfolders and files properly, except when I click on the Parent Directory link, which, for example, should lead to http://folder.dev, but redirects to http://folder.dev/folder/ and consequently throws 404 not found. Similarly, if Parent Directory should link to http://folder.dev/subfolder/, it links to http://folder.dev/folder/subfolder/.   I tried adding route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0 to my Fedora rc.local file, but it's not being executed when Fedora boots up. What can I do to fix this? update: i changed to the full path cmd in my rc.local /sbin/route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0 but its not being executed. I change it to sudo /sbin/route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0 it still doesnt work although it works when i manually enter it in the terminal.

  I'm currently using Chrome 21.0.1180.89 on Windows 7, but I have noticed this behavior in other versions before. Probably about one time in a hundred, I will click on a link on a website and an instance of Notepad will open up with a blank page rather than the browser going to the link. To my knowledge, I have no malware or viruses on the machine that could be causing this. It's a minor annoyance, so I'm not very concerned about it, but I'm wondering if there could be a MIME type that's set wrong by default in the browser?

• Spoof database connection to be local instead of remote

  I am trying to connect one of our clients "as is" programs to a remote database instead of a local one, they say that they have coded it to be able to do it, but for some reason the program crashes when trying to connect to a remote database. I don't have the source code so I can't really dig much deeper than that and the company does not provide any upgrades or custom modifications. I can succesfully connect to the database through SqlDbx and HeidiSQL so I know that the server is set up correctly. This is why I need to find a way to spoof a remote connection on port 1433 to appear like a local database connection to the program. I thought about editing the hosts file, but it will most likely crash other programs if I bind localhost to another IP than 127.0.0.1. Any ideas?

  We are a team of three, all working on our local machines on the same internal network. We will all be working on websites in local working copies of the same Git repo hosted on Github. We have an internal staging machine here (dev.internal), and I am looking for a way for us to be able to push to this machine. At each milestone in the development cycle. In essence, all I really want us to be able to do is add the dev.internal machine as a remote, and push to this whenever we are ready.   I have installed windows server 2003 and configured Domain controller (domain name - xyz.com) and DNS service. for that I have configured fully qualified domain name as server.xyz.com also I have installed apache tomcat with port 8080 on that server and accessed link successfully using "http://localhost:8080", "http://ip address of server:8080", "http://server.xyz.com:8080". but its working for local machine, and when I tried to access it from another machine in same network using "http://ip address of server:8080" its worked for me. but when I tried it using fully qualified domain name i.e. "http://server.xyz.com:8080" it's giving me error, "Could not connect to server.xyz.com" Please guide me getting this setup done. I need to be able to access this link "http://ip address of server:8080" as "http://server.xyz.com:8080" outside my network Any suggestion are highly appreciated..

• Can't connect to web-server on local host behind NAT

  I got Ubuntu as host. I'm running a web-server on http://192.168.199.8:80. It is accessible from the local network, but when I'm trying to reach it by external IP, I go to my router's web-page. I arranged port forwarding on router for port 80 to my local IP 192.168.199.8. Unfortunately web-server is still unavailable via external IP. I checked whether the port is open via http://www.canyouseeme.org/. As it showed that the port is unavailable, I changed port used to 3659 (not forget to rearrange port forwarding rule). Although http://www.canyouseeme.org/ shows that port 3659 is open, I still can't reach my web-server. Where can the problem be?

  Hi I would like to setup a local linux file server (using centos and samba) that can be accessed by two independent local networks in the same house. I have 2 networks on the same floor which have Windows 7 computers, but the networks are split as we have 2 internet connections. How do I go about this? Additional info: Currently both the networks use DropBox to send files to each other but that happens via the Internet and hence its slow. Would like to achieve the same locally to increase the speed.

  I am trying to link directly to the review link of one of my Apps. I know that it is possible because Appirater did it in the past, but some change in iTunes turned the API down. This Page talks about another kind of link https://userpub.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZUserPublishing.woa/wa/addUserReview?id=APP_ID&type=Purple+Software and also itms-apps://ax.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewContentsUserReviews?type=Purple+Software&id=APP_ID The first one works, but just from the desktop mac. The second gives me the same error as the first... Cannot Connect to iTunes Store. iTunes link maker is not helping too, because it has no tools for iPad links... Do you guys know how to link to an app's review form from inside an app? In case you don't know, what kind of package should I use to dig this? a package sniffer? thanks for any help.

• Cannot get NLogViewer to receive msgs from local machine

  I cannot get NLogViewer to receive msgs from local machine. My machine is Windows 7. I am able to get a remote machine to send NLog messages to my local box and NLogViewer on my local box shows the message fine. But, if I run an app locally, and config NLog to spit messages to my local box, NLogViewer doesn't get the messages.   I am using git to develop against a project hosted in subversion, using git-svn: git svn clone svn://project/ My general workflow has been to repeatedly edit-and-commit on the master branch, then commit to the svn repository via: git stash git svn dcommit git stash apply One of the local modifications that 'stash' command is preserving, that I don't want to commit to the svn repository, is a changed database connection string. What's the most convenient way to keep this local change without the extra 'stash' steps? I suspect that something like 'stash' or 'quilt' is what I'm looking for, but I'm still new enough to git that I think I'm missing some terminology that would lead to the exact incantation. Update: The only solution I found that seems to avoid the git stash + git-svn action + git stash apply series was to update the git-svn ref manually: (check in local-only change to 'master', then...) $ cat .git/refs/master > .git/refs/remote/git-svn $ git svn fetch (with at least one new SVN revision) And that leaves the local-only commit as a weird (probably unsafe) commit between two svn revisions.

  I just ran these two commands: sudo gem install rails --pre sudo gem install railties --pre Now when I run rails myapp, I get this: -bash: /usr/local/bin/rails: No such file or directory Here's some system info: $ ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [i686-darwin9.7.0] $ sudo gem update --system Updating RubyGems Nothing to update I tried copy/pasting the bin/rails file into /usr/local/bin/rails, and changing permissions to sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/rails, but that doesn't work. Any ideas how to get up and running?

  I'm currently using ASP.NET MVC 2 and the spark view engine. The main master page (application.spark) contains all of the CSS link tags that need to be present for all pages (global stuff). However, I have some content pages that have page specific CSS tags and currently I'm just sticking the link tag in the body as something like: <content name="MainContent"> <!-- page specific csss --> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/Content/css/page_specific.css" /> My problem is that when the page renders, this tag ends up in the which is not where it needs to be. Is there a solution for this? One idea I had was to check the controller in the Application.spark page and write out which page specific css file is required for that particular controller, however, that solution doesn't seem to scale well and I would imagine there is some way of creating the link in the child page and having it render where it's supposed to by the browser.

  Hello, I'm writing a standalone application and I thought using Entity Framework to store my data. At the moment the application is small so I can use a local database file to get started. The thing is that the local database file doesn't have the ability to auto generate integer primary keys as SQL Server does.
