  • Linux NFS create mask and force user equivalent

    I have two Linux servers: fileserver Debian 5.0.3 (2.6.26-2-686) Samba version 3.4.2 apache Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (2.6.32-23-generic) Apache 2.2.14 I have a number of Samba shares on fileserver so that I can access files from Windows PCs. I am also exporting /data/www-data to the apache server, where I have it mounted as /var/www. The setup is okay, except for when I come to create files on the NFS mount. I end up with files that cannot be read by Apache, or which cannot be modified by other users on my system. With Samba, I can specify force user, force group, create mask and directory mask, and this ensures that all files are created with suitable permissions for my Apache web server. I can't find a way to do this with NFS. Is there a way to force permissions and ownership with NFS - am I missing something obvious? Although I've spent quite a bit of time with Linux, and am weaning myself off Windows, I still haven't quite got to grip with Linux permissions... If this is not the right way to do things, I am open to alternative suggestions.

  • Reusing slot numbers in Linux software RAID arrays

    When a hard disk drive in one of my Linux machines failed, I took the opportunity to migrate from RAID5 to a 6-disk software RAID6 array. At the time of the migration I did not have all 6 drives - more specifically the fourth and fifth (slots 3 and 4) drives were already in use in the originating array, so I created the RAID6 array with a couple of missing devices. I now need to add those drives in those empty slots. Using mdadm --add does result in a proper RAID6 configuration, with one glitch - the new drives are placed in new slots, which results in this /proc/mdstat snippet: ... md0 : active raid6 sde1[7] sdd1[6] sda1[0] sdf1[5] sdc1[2] sdb1[1] 25185536 blocks super 1.0 level 6, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [6/6] [UUUUUU] ... mdadm -E verifies that the actual slot numbers in the device superblocks are correct, yet the numbers shown in /proc/mdstat are still weird. I would like to fix this glitch, both to satisfy my inner perfectionist and to avoid any potential sources of future confusion in a crisis. Is there a way to specify which slot a new device should occupy in a RAID array? UPDATE: I have verified that the slot number persists in the component device superblock. For the version 1.0 superblocks that I am using that would be the dev_number field as defined in include/linux/raid/md_p.h of the Linux kernel source. I am now considering direct modification of said field to change the slot number - I don't suppose there is some standard way to manipulate the RAID superblock?

  • Wifi Works with Android and Windows 8 but not Linux and Win 7

    Support has told me that our company wide wifi network is setup to support mobile phones only. However it doesn't make sense to me that they can identify a mobile device rather they have setup the Access Point to use a protocol that is only supported on Android and Windows phones. Because the Access Point supports Windows mobile this means that laptops running Windows 8 can also connect to the Access Point (proven). So it stands to reason that since Android is based on Linux there must be a way to connect using Linux as well. iwlist shows IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : TKIP CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : 802.1x WIreshark seems to show that a connection is being made to a website to get a certificate and use a Domain Controller for authentication. Questions: 1) what protocol could they be using that is supported on Win Mobile and Android but not on Win 7 and Linux (Debian) ? 2) what tools can I use to help me discover what protocol i need to support ? I have used iwlist and wireshark but I was not able to glean to much useful information from them. I can post the results if needed. 3) is there an app i can use on my Android phone to help me understand what kind of network it is connecting to ? I can provide more information if you tell me how to get it. I just don't know what I am looking for.

  • Ubuntu 10.10 - disaster - what other linux for beginner?

    Guys, I've tried to install ubuntu (desktop and notebook ed) on my laptop and unortunately I have to say that as despite the fact that installation process supposed to be easy I couldn't finish installation of this system - didn't detect my keyboard or rather lost my keyboard as soon as I tried to switch on/off pad on my laptop. After I've discovered that, I started all over again (this time without touching my laptop's pad during installation) and yes, eventually it get to the end of installation. Unfortunately, when I've tried to switch my pad (sometimes I just do not want to use a mouse) the whole system froze. So I had to restart it with the power button and this time I didn't touch pad at all, plugged in mouse and tried to rearrange taskbars according to my liking (all taskbars on the top side of the screen and auto-hide on) and I gave up. It is so unfinished that I just can't be bothered to use it. I would like to have one linux system on my machine so I started googling and most of the links are to either ubuntu (which I just do not want to touch for now) and suse or commercial versions of linux. I do not really mind paying for something (and having experience with ubuntu I'd rather pay and have something pro then get it free and discover that it's unusable). So could someone please provide short list of linux distros which would be appropriate for a beginner, and I don't mind paying for it, I just want it to be a professional product.

  • Encrypted Windows 7 & Linux Advice Wanted

    I would like to set up my laptop to dual boot Arch Linux and Windows 7 with file sharing and encryption. Just wanted some advice on going about this because I have not dealt with encryption nor file sharing. I have two 500GB hard drives, and this is my plan: Install Windows 7 across both hard drives Use a live CD to wipe out Windows boot loader and replace with Grub Legacy Use live CD to wipe out second hard drive and re-size the Windows partition located on first hard drive Install Arch Linux along side with Windows 7 on first hard drive, all remaining space goes to home folder as ext2 Install truecrypt and ext2fsd Concerns: Is this the most efficient way to share files between both OSes? Or should I just be using NTFS to store all my data? How would the file permissions work when sharing files between Windows and Linux? Is there a high likley hood of corruption, and what is the ease of backing up files from an encrypted disk? Anything I should look out for, conflict between Grub and Truecrypt? Thank you for any advice, and feel free to post any links you might find useful to me. I am trying to plan this out so I can minimize downtime as I do not want to spend more than a night on this, nor do I want to run into a major problem some time in the future.

  • Listing Desktop Apps in the Windows 8 Store

    So it looks like Microsoft will be allowing publishers to list their desktop apps in the Windows 8 Store.  As per the developer agreement: b. Desktop App Submission. You may submit an app description for one or more desktop apps to the Windows Store. Notwithstanding anything else in this agreement, you understand that Microsoft will not offer any desktop apps through the Store and only Windows Store apps are made available through the Windows Store. Microsoft may, but is not required to, list the desktop app in the Windows Store together with a link you provide, to a website where users can acquire the app. You are solely responsible and agree to maintain that website and provide an updated link to Microsoft if the url changes. Desktop apps are any apps built using APIs other than the APIs for Windows Store apps that run on Windows 8. As the agreement states, Microsoft will not distribute desktop apps through the store, but they will provide a link to a website where users can download your desktop app.  If nothing else, it is a great way to advertise your app.  Hopefully this doesn’t cause any confusion with consumers.  Will end users understand why some apps install automatically while others just send you to a website?

  • Compile Qt Project To Run On A Linux System

    I have a Qt project. It uses the cross platform libraries SDL, OpenGL and FLTK. I want to be able to compile the project so that it can run on a Linux computer. I'm looking at a bunch of articles I have seen so far two ways to do this. Use a cross compiler, which seems to me a rather complicated thing to setup and compile with, or, the other options, is to compile the project simply on a Linux computer, simply the Linux version of Qt creator/SDK. My question is, If I have a Qt project that uses only cross platform libraries, then is creating a Windows version easy as compiling it in Qt/Windows, and creating the Linux version as easy as doing it in Qt/Linux? PS. Please don't ask/complain about why I didn't just try to see if it works myself, I don't have any Linux OS's installed on my computer right now, and I don't want to risk going into the trouble of installing a whole new OS just to have it not work in the end.

  • 2-Bay External HDD Enclosure in JBOD mode fails to detect both drives (Linux & Windows)

    I recently purchased a couple of USB 3.0 External HDD Enclosures to use for storage and backup; the idea was to have one act as backup to the other, with 4 x 3TB drives in total. However, the second drive in each is not accessible in either Linux nor Windows, and I could not determine the reason. 1. Situation The two enclosures are slightly different (couldn't find them in stock at the same time) yet from many little details appear to be the same Chinese base design with a tweaked outer shell. The models are: Sharkoon 2-Bay RAID Box Fantec MR-35DU3 The drives are Seagate 3TB Barracuda ST33000651AS, firmware CC44, all identical. From reading manuals and online sources, I determined that JBOD would be the optimal setup for my needs -- addressing the two drives separately in each enclosure would be important, making it easy to swap drives and mix&match them if needed; all the other modes implied the controller doing a combination of the drives. The software used was Debian GNU/Linux - testing/wheezy - kernel 2.6.39-2 and Windows 7 Ultimate. 2. Description of the problem Now, here comes the problem: every time I connect either of the enclosures to a PC using the supplied cable (tried a different one as well), only the HDD in the top bay is readable, the one below is detected yet errors out in various ways. According to the manuals, it should not happen: in JBOD, the system should be able to "see" two separate drives upon connection. This happens with both enclosures and any combination of HDDs (i.e. if I swap them, the same thing happens), so the HDDs are good and I think so are the enclosures (two different companies making similar products that failed in an identical fashion would be very unlikely). The top HDD can be used fine every time, I actually tried a speed test from Linux and got about 150MiB/s reads, so all is working as it should; the one below refuses to work every time. So the failure is consistent. To make sure this was not some obscure Linux bug, I tried the same under Windows 7, and the system also only created one drive letter for a drive of 3TB size (so it was only seeing one instead of both). Placing an older, known good, 2TB drive in the top bay made that the one recognised, so we have the same issue under Windows as well. Log entries under Linux (tested here with a 3TB and a 2TB drive so I could differentiate them; either one works in the top enclosure, in the test setup the 3TB one is on top).   • Black screen appears when booting new install of 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

    I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

  • Upgrade issues due to broken "dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-image-generic" error

    okay, I've recently upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 and I've been having some issues. I don't know if its a bug or not, but I thought I would submit it here. Okay here's a little background; I ran the distro update from the update manager and got a couple errors that I didn't catch. the computer restarted, and when I logged the Launcher and my top bar of the Ubuntu desktop didn't load. While it was trying to load a couple error messages came up, I think they were called "apport", saying they couldn't send the bug information for some reason. I believe it said somethings wrong with my internet connection, but nothing's wrong with it.     Oracle R Enterprise graphics are returned as raster, or bitmap graphics. Raster images consist of tiny squares of color information referred to as pixels that form points of color to create a complete image. Plots that contain raster images render quickly in R and create small, high-quality exported image files in a wide variety of formats. However, it is a known issue that the rendering of raster images can be problematic when creating graphics using a Remote Desktop connection. Raster images do not display in the windows device using Remote Desktop under the default settings. For example, this simple embedded R image plot will be returned in a raster-based format using a standalone Windows machine:  R> library(ORE) R> ore.connect(user="rquser", sid="orcl", host="localhost", password="rquser", all=TRUE)  R> ore.doEval(function() image(volcano, col=terrain.colors(30))) Here, we first load the ORE packages and connect to the database instance using database login credentials. The ore.doEval function executes the R code within the database embedded R engine and returns the image back to the client R session. Over a Remote Desktop connection under the default settings, this graph will appear blank due to the restricted number of colors. Users who encounter this issue have two options to display ORE graphics over Remote Desktop: either raise Remote Desktop's Color Depth or direct the plot output to an alternate device. Option #1: Raise Remote Desktop Color Depth setting In a Remote Desktop session, all environment variables, including display variables determining Color Depth, are determined by the RCP-Tcp connection settings. For example, users can reduce the Color Depth when connecting over a slow connection. The different settings are 15 bits, 16 bits, 24 bits, or 32 bits per pixel. To raise the Remote Desktop color depth: On the Windows server, launch Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration from the Accessories menu.Under Connections, right click on RDP-Tcp and select Properties.On the Client Settings tab either uncheck LimitMaximum Color Depth or set it to 32 bits per pixel. Click Apply, then OK, log out of the remote session and reconnect.After reconnecting, the Color Depth on the Display tab will be set to 32 bits per pixel.  Raster graphics will now display as expected. For ORE users, the increased color depth results in slightly reduced performance during plot creation, but the graph will be created instead of displaying an empty plot. Option #2: Direct plot output to alternate device Plotting to a non-windows device is a good option if it's not possible to increase Remote Desktop Color Depth, or if performance is degraded when creating the graph. Several device drivers are available for off-screen graphics in R, such as postscript, pdf, and png. On-screen devices include windows, X11 and Cairo.   • Disable "longhaul" kernel module with a GRUB command?

    I've got a problem with a VIA C3 (1GHz)-system: the system freezes immediately when the CPU frequency goes under 731MHz because of an incompatibility with the (not completely implemented) i686 commands and a powersave feature of the kernel. There is a workaround: deactivate the "longhaul" kernelmodule via alias longhaul off in /etc/modprobe.d/aliases. But the system freezes before I can install any Linux distribution - even Clonezilla freezes. Is there a possibility to deactivate the module with a GRUB boot parameter before the kernel is loaded?

  • Implication of variable context switching time

    Hi, I know that constant switching time of the Linux scheduler was a big achievement. I was just asking myself the question what would be the implication of a non-constant switching time. The only obvious reason I can think of is real-time systems where we have to meet deadlines. There it is obviously no ideal if the switching time is "random".   • Keep source IP after NAT

    Until today I used a cheapy router so I can share my internet connection and keep a webserver online too, while using NAT. Users IP ($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']) was fine, I was seeing class A IPs of users. But as traffic grown up everyday, I had to install a Linux Server (Debian) to share my Internet Connection, because my old router couldn't keep the traffic anymore. I shared the internet via IPTABLES using NAT, but now, after forwarding port 80 to my webserver, now instead of seeing real users IP, I see my Gateway IP (Linux Internal IP) as any user IP Address. How to solve this issue? Introducing delays or packet loss is quite simple but I got into trouble trying to configure bandwidth limiting. Can you, please, show me how to limit all the traffic going through my bridge without any special rules and condition, simply limit it to 1Mb/s? Thanks.   • Losing connection to server from several computers

    I have a PostgreSQL server running Oracle Linux. In my network I have several workstations each running different OS (Fedora, Ubuntu, Windows). Every once in a while I lose connection from the several workstations to the server while other workstations can connect with no problem. If I do service network restart from the server the problem is solved and everyone can work until the next time it returns. Any clues? Thank you, Ben.

    I'd like someone to enlighten me as to what exactly goes on with aptitude when I want a kernel. As we all know, there's pretty much the following kernel option: linux-image-generic linux-image-server linux-image-virtual This morning I did an install and it had linux-image-generic on it, so I ran the following: apt-get -y remove linux-image-* This removed all my kernels as expected, I followed suit with running: apt-get install linux-image-virtual Says I've installed linux-image-server!? Am I missing something here, because I checked twice and it did it twice, however if I manually select a kernel (in my instance I used: linux-image-2.6.35-30-virtual) it will install linux-image-virtual. This seems rather strange to me? Details: Running Ubuntu 9.10 Am I missing something? :)

  • Dual-screen Multimedia Control Suite for Linux (like Screen Monkey)

    I'm looking for some linux software to manage and control a dual monitor/multi screen setup for use in professional-like presentations (ie: monitor1=control, monitor2=projector/audience). I have the dual-monitor configured with my gnome desktop running over both monitors (that's the easy part). What I'm looking for is a neat/seamless way to switch between, say, OpenOffice Impress, DVD Player, VLC live video, Lyricue, other software on monitor2. To have monitor2 shown to the audience and run neat presentations of DVDs, Slideshows, etc. whilst controlling it from monitor1. I can run slideshows, play a DVD on monitor2 (drag & drop VLC on monitor2, and go fullscreen) etc. but this is rather messy in a presentation environment. I found this software: Screen Monkey. Looks like an excellent windows equivalent for what I want to do. Is there anything similar for linux? For Gnome, KDE, anything else X based? Thanks, SamJ
