  I AM DEVELOPING AN EXCEL DATABASE TO RECORD STUDENTS DETAILS. THE HEADINGS OF THE TABLE ARE DATE,YEAR, PAYMENT SLIP NO.,STUDENT NUMBER,NAME,FEES,AMOUNT PAID, BALANCE AND PREVIOUS BALANCE. • Should a poll framework be closed sourced

  I was having a chat with a coworker who is working on a polling app and framework. He was asking technical questions and I suggested he open source the application to get more quality opinions from developers who are interested in this problem and are willing to give it heavy though. He has a different point of view which I think is still valid so I want to open this question for discussion here. He says he believes something like a polling framework should not be open sourced because it will reduce its security and validity as people reveal loopholes through which they can cheat. Can't say I completely disagree. I see a somewhat valid point there, but I always believed that solutions by a group of people are almost always better than a solution thought by a single person asking a small number of coworkers, no matter how smart that person is. Again I'm willing to accept that maybe some types of applications are different. Does anyone have an argument in his favor? I'd really like to present your responses to him.

  Having to work with large files now, I would like to know when the java libraries will start switching to long for indexing in their methods. From Inputstreams read(byte[] b, int off, int len) - funnily there is long skip(long) also - to MappedByteBuffer to the basic indexing of arrays and lists, everything is adressed as int. Is there an official plan for enhancment of the libraries? Do initiatives exist to pressure oracle into enhancing the libraries, if there is no official plan yet?

• Speakers, Please Check Your Time

  Woodrow Wilson was once asked how long it would take him to prepare for a 10 minute speech. He replied "Two weeks". He was then asked how long it would take for a 1 hour speech. "One week", he replied. 2 hour speech? "I'm ready right now," he replied.  Whether that is a true story or an urban legend, I don’t really know, but either way, it is a poignant reminder for all speakers, and particularly apropos this week leading up to the PASS Community Summit. (Cross-posted to the PASS Professional Development Virtual Chapter blog #PASSProfDev.) What’s the point of that story?  Simply this…if you have plenty of time to do your presentation, you don’t need to prepare much because it is easy to throw in more and more material to stretch out to your allotted time.  But if you are on a tight time constraint, then it will take significant preparation to distill your talk down to only the essential points. I have attended seven of the last eight North American Summit events, and every one of them has been fantastic.  The speakers are great, the material is timely and relevant, and the networking opportunities are awesome.  And every year, there is one little thing that just bugs me…speakers going over their allotted time.  Why does it bother me so?  Well, if you look at a typical schedule for a Summit, you’ll see that there are six or more sessions going on at the same time, and only 15 minutes to move from one to another.  If you’re trying to maximize your training dollar by attending something during every session time slot, and you don’t want to be the last guy trying to squeeze into the middle of the row, then those 15 minutes can be critical.  All the more so if you need to stop and use the bathroom or if you have to hike to the opposite end of the convention center.  It is really a bad position to find yourself having to choose between learning the last key points of Speaker A who is going over time, and getting over to Speaker B on time so you don’t miss her key opening remarks. And frankly, I think it is just rude.  Yes, the speakers are the function, after all they are bringing the content that the rest of us are paying to learn.  But it is also an honor to be given the opportunity to speak at a conference like this, and no one speaker is so important that the conference would be a disaster without him.  Speakers know when they submit their abstract, long before the conference, how much time they will have.  It has been the same pattern at the Summit for at least the last eight years.  Program Sessions are 75 minutes long.  Some speakers who have a good track record, and meet other qualifying criteria, are extended an invitation to present a Spotlight Session which is 90 minutes (a 20% increase).  So there really is no excuse.  It’s not like you were promised a 2-hour segment and then discovered when you got here that it was only 75 minutes.  In fact, it’s not like PASS advertised 90-minute sessions for everyone and then a select few were cut back to only 75.  As a speaker, you know well before you get here which type of session you are doing and how long it is, so as a professional, you should plan accordingly. Now you might think that this only happens to rookies, but I’ll tell you that some of the worst offenders are big-name veterans who draw huge attendance numbers for their sessions.  Some attendees blow this off as, “Hey, it’s so-and-so, and I’d stay here for hours and listen to him/her talk.”  To which I would reply, “Then they should have submitted for a pre- or post-conference day-long seminar instead, but don’t try to squeeze your day-long talk into a 90-minute session.”  Now I don’t really believe that these speakers are being malicious or just selfishly trying to extend their time in the spotlight.  I think that most of them are merely being undisciplined and did not trim their presentation sufficiently, or allowed themselves to get off-track (often in a generous attempt to help someone in the audience with a question or problem that really should have been noted for further discussion after the session). So here is my recommendation…my plea, even.  TRIM THE FAT!  Now.  Before it’s too late.  Before you even get on the airplane, take a long, hard look at your presentation and eliminate some of the points that you originally thought you had to make, but in reality are not truly crucial to your main topic.  Delete a few slides.  Test your demos and have them already scripted rather than typing them during your talk.  It is better to cut out too much and end up with plenty of time at the end for Questions & Answers.  And you can always keep some notes on the stuff that you cut out so that you could fill it back in at the end as bonus material if you really do end up with a whole bunch of time on your hands.  But I don’t think you will.  And if you do, that will look even better to the audience as it will look like you’re giving them something extra that not every audience gets.  And they will thank you for that.

• Encrypt images before uploading to Dropbox [migrated]

  I want to encrypt a file first before the file will be uploaded to the dropbox. So i have implement the encryption inside the uploading of the codes. However, there is an error after i integrate the codes together. Where did my mistake go wrong? Error at putFileOverwriteRequest and it says The method putFileOverwriteRequest(String, InputStream, long, ProgressListener) in the type DropboxAPI is not applicable for the arguments (String, FileOutputStream, long, new ProgressListener(){}) Another problem is that this FileOutputStream fis = new FileOutputStream(new File("dont know what to put in this field")); i do not know where to put the file so that after i read the file, it will call the path and then upload to the Dropbox. • How do I configure upstart to run a script on shutdown when the process takes longer than 10secs?

  I am running ubuntu 11.10 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) to learn more about development in linux. I am using a git repository to save my work and have written a script to bundle my work up and save it to the shared folder for use while the virtual machine is not running. I would like to automatically run this script before shutdown so that my work is always available if the vm is off (currently I have to manually run the script). I'm using a 2.6 kernel, and the program is being run on a dual-core processor with realtime priority. I'm trying to disable cache effects by declaring the memory arrays as volatile. • Tiff Analyzer

  I am writing a program to convert some data, mainly a bunch of Tiff images. Some of the Tiffs seems to have a minor problem with them. They show up fine in some viewers (Irfanview, client's old system) but not in others (Client's new system, Window's picture and fax viewer). I have manually looked at the binary data and all the tags seem ok. Can anyone recommend an app that can analyze it and tell me what, if anything, is wrong with it? Also, for clarity sake, I'm only converting the data about the images which is stored seperately in a database and copying the images, I'm not editting the images myself, so I'm pretty sure I'm not messing them up.   Hi, I have a school assignment, to send a jpg image,split it into groups of 100 bytes, corrupt it, use a CRC check to locate the errors and re-transmit until it eventually is built back into its original form. It's practically ready, however when I check out the new images, they appear with errors.. • Shift count negative or too big error - correct solution?

Here are the typedefs used: typedef unsigned char BYTE; typedef unsigned short WORD; typedef unsigned long DWORD; The thing is that i get 4 compiler warnings on the first four lines with the shift operation: warning C4293: '<<' : shift count negative or too big, undefined behavior I understand why this warning occurs, but i can't seem to figure out how to get rid of it correctly. I could do something like: qT |= (unsigned long long)readb() << 56; This removes the warning, but isn't there any other problem, will the BYTE be correctly extended all the time? Maybe i'm just thinking about it too much and the solution is that simple. Can you guys help me out here? Thanks.

• Overlay an HTML page with an HTML form

  Hi folks, this is a question about the best way (or least effort of the best ways) to overlay an html page with a form. Best in this context meaning best user experience whilst meeting the functional requirements. Let's say I have a page with a short form on it; the user has to enter some financial details. To assist the user to enter an accurate value for one of the fields there's another, much longer form. The longer form needs to be displayed only if the user requests the help. For users without javascript, clicking a link will submit the short form (persisting already filled fields in a session) and the server will respond with the long form. They'll submit the long form and the server will combine the submitted data with the persisted data and serve the short form again - with the fields populated. For users with javascript I want to overlay the short form page (in a lightbox stylee) with the long form, allow them to populate the long form and then go back to the short form with less round-trips to the server. Do I: Overlay the short form page with an iframe whose target is the long form? Request the long form over ajax and stuff it into a div? Generate the long form entirely on the client-side? Some other wizadry I haven't thought of? A short explanation of the best mechanism will do me very nicely indeed. Thank you very much!

  I need to approx (1-x)^0.25 with given accuracy (0.0001 e.g.). I'm using expansion found on Wikipedia for (1+x)^0.25. Domain of the function is <-1;1 and s() calculates approximation well for x in <-1;~0.6. The bigger the argument is the bigger is the error of calculation. From 0.6 it exceeds the accuracy. I'm not sure if the problem is clear enough because I don't know English math language well. The thing is what's the matter with while condition and why the function s() doesn't approximate correctly.

It wouldn't work either, complains about "not all parameters were given explicit matchers: either all parameters must be specified by matchers or all must be specified by values, you cannot mix matchers and values"

  Why import org.apache.commons.lang.StringUtils cannot be imported in android by default. Do i have to include an external library? • Wrong answer on c# application, finding the n prime of a list of prime numbers.

  Hello, I am new to C# and I am practicing by trying to solve this easy C# problem. This application will receive an "n" number. After receiving this number, the program has to show the n prime of the list of primes. For example, if the user enters "3", the program is supposed to display "5", because 5 is the third prime starting at 2. I koow that something is wrong with my code but I dont know where is the problem and how I can fix it. Can you please tell me?   Hi! Im creating an application on C#. Its function is to evualuate if a given is prime and if the same swapped number is prime as well. When I build my solution on Visual Studio, it says that "an object reference is required for the non-static field, method or property...". Im having this problem with the "volteado" and "siprimo" methods.   Hi, I have a JSON response that is formatted from my C# WebMethod using the JavascriptSerializer Class. I currently get the following JSON back from my query: {"d":"[{\"Lat\":\"51.85036\",\"Long\":\"-8.48901\"},{\"Lat\":\"51.89857\",\"Long\":\"-8.47229\"}]"} I'm having an issue with my code below that I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on. I can't seem to get at the information out of the values returned to me. Ideally I would like to be able to read in the Lat and Long values for each row returned to me. • power and modulo on the fly for big numbers

  I raise some basis b to the power p and take the modulo m of that. Let's assume b=55170 or 55172 and m=3043839241 (which happens to be the square of 55171). The linux-calculator bc gives the results (we need this for control): echo "p=5606;b=55171;m=b*b;((b-1)^p)%m;((b+1)^p)%m" | bc 2734550616 309288627 Now calculating 55170^5606 gives a somewhat large number, but since I have to do a modulooperation, I can circumvent the usage of BigInt, I thought, because of: (a*b) % c == ((a%c) * (b%c))%c i.e. (9*7) % 5 == ((9%5) * (7%5))%5 => 63 % 5 == (4 * 2) %5 => 3 == 8 % 5 ... and a^d = a^(b+c) = a^b * a^c, therefore I can divide b+c by 2, which gives, for even or odd ds d/2 and d-(d/2), so for 8^5 I can calculate 8^2 * 8^3. So my (defective) method, which always cut's off the divisor on the fly looks like that: def powMod (b: Long, pot: Int, mod: Long) : Long = { if (pot == 1) b % mod else { val pot2 = pot/2 val pm1 = powMod (b, pot, mod) val pm2 = powMod (b, pot-pot2, mod) (pm1 * pm2) % mod } } and feeded with some values, powMod (55170, 5606, 3043839241L) res2: Long = 1885539617 powMod (55172, 5606, 3043839241L) res4: Long = 309288627 As we can see, the second result is exactly the same as the one above, but the first one looks quiet different. I'm doing a lot of such calculations, and they seem to be accurate as long as they stay in the range of Int, but I can't see any error. • C function prototype: void f(). Is it recommended?

  Hi, I'm learning C and I saw in a book that a function prototype has the form void f() and in the function declaration or in the calling function, the f function takes arguments. Thus In the function declaration we have something like void f(long double y[], long double A) and in the calling function is f(y, A). The function is doing operations on the array y i.e. when the function is called, some elements in the array y are changing. A is just a constant numerical value that doesn't change. I have two questions: If defining the function prototype at the top in the program as void f() a good practice? Or is it better to put it as void f(long double y[], long double A) as in the function declaration? The called function f is changing elements in the array y. Is void the right return type? The program is working fine as such with the void as described. Or should I change all my "voids" to "long double". I'm working with long double as I need as much precision as possible though on my machine both double and long double gives me 15 precision digits. Thanks a lot
