• Sitemap structure for network of subdomains

  I am working on a project that's a network of 2 domains (domain.gr & domain.com.cy) of subdomains similar to Hubpages [each user gets a profile under a different subdomain & there is a personal blog for that user as well] and I think there is something wrong with our sitemap submission. Sometimes it takes weeks in order a new profiles to get indexed. We make use of one Webmasters account in order to manage all network and we don't want to create different accounts for each subdomain since there are more than 1000 already. According to this post http://goo.gl/KjMCjN, I end up on a structure of 5 sitemaps with the following structure : 1st sitemap will be for indexing the others. 2nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.gr 3nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.com.cy 4th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.gr - news sitemap http://goo.gl/8A8S9f 5th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.com.cy - news sitemap again Now my questions: Should we create news sitemaps or just list all post in 2nd & 3rd sitemap? Does links ordering has anything to do? Eg: Most recent user created be first in sitemap or doesn't make any different and we just need to make sure that lastmod date is correct? Does anyone guess how Hubpages submit their sitemap in Webmasters so maybe we could follow there way? Any alternative or better way to index this kind of schema? PS: Our network is multi language - Greek & English are available. We make use of hreflang tags on the head of each page to separate country target of each version.

• No NFC for the iPhone, and here's why

  I, like many others in the retail industry, was hoping the iPhone 5 would include an NFC chip that enabled a mobile wallet.  In previous postings I've discussed the possible business case and the foreshadowing of Passbook, but it wasn't meant to be.  A few weeks ago I was considering all the rumors, and it suddenly occurred to me that it wasn't in Apple's best interest to support an NFC chip.  Yes they have patents in this area, but perhaps they are more defensive than indicating new development. Steve Jobs wanted to always win, but more importantly he didn't want others to win at his expense.  It drove him nuts that Windows was more successful than MacOS, and clearly he was bothered by Samsung and other handset manufacturers copying the iPhone.  But he was most angry at Google for their stewardship of Android. If the iPhone 5 had an NFC chip, who would benefit most?  Google Wallet is far and away the leader in NFC-based payments via mobile phones in the US.  Even without Steve at the helm, Apple isn't going to do anything to help Google.  Plus Apple doesn't like to do things in an open way -- then they lose control.  For example, you don't see iPhones with expandable memory, replaceable batteries, or USB connectors.  Adding a standards-based NFC chip just isn't in their nature. So I don't think Apple is holding back on the NFC chip for the 5S or 6.  It just isn't going to happen unless they can figure out how to prevent others from benefiting from it. All the other handset manufacturers will use NFC as a differentiator, which may be enough to keep Google and Isis afloat, and of course Square and PayPal aren't betting on NFC anyway.  This isn't the end of alternative payments, its just a major speed bump.

• GlassFish Server 3.1.2.2 Maven Coordinates

  GlassFish Server 3.1.2.2 was released a few weeks ago. This micro release fixed a couple of important bugfixes - one in JAX-WS (JAX-WS-1059) and another one related to JK listener with Apache + mod_ajp_proxy (GLASSFISH-18446). This release is already integrated in NetBeans 7.2 and you can download separately from here. Maven coordinates for this build are now also described on the download page. The following fragment in your pom.xml will allow you to invoke embedded-glassfish:run, embedded-glassfish:deploy, and other similar commands. <dependency>    <groupId>org.glassfish.embedded</groupId>     <artifactId>maven-embedded-glassfish-plugin</artifactId>     <version>3.1.2.2</version> </dependency> GlassFish Embedded Server Guide provide more details about setup etc. Similarly full platform or Web profile implementation of GlassFish can be included as a single JAR using <dependency>    <groupId>org.glassfish.main.extras</groupId>    <artifactId>glassfish-embedded-web</artifactId>    <version>3.1.2.2</version></dependency> Of course, you need to replace "glassfish-embedded-web" with "glassfish-embedded-all" to get complete platform.  The download page provide more details different bundles and complete maven coordinates. • Unity's gone! How do I get it back?

  Earlier today my Unity desktop disappeared: I got a black screen with white text, but it disappeared too quickly for me to read. When the desktop reappeared, it was the Ubuntu Classic desktop. I used $ unity --reset but that did not do anything. I tried rebooting so I could choose unity from the list when I logged in, but although there was Ubuntu choice, there was no unity listed (but classic was listed). I was able to install Unity 2D and am using that, but really want to get 3D back. I had been using Ubuntu without problems for several weeks when this happened. My graphics card is onboard a Dell Latitude desktop - a couple years old - and is reported as an Intel G33/G31. I've looked at other requests for help here, and tried suggestions when they seemed to relate to similar problems, but nothing seems to work so far. Any ideas? Thanks!   I just read this quote from Steve Jobs: "Doing LSD was one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." Now I'm wondering: Has there ever been a study where programmers have been given drugs to see if they could produce "better" code? Is there a programming concept, which originated from people who where drug-users? Do you know of a piece of code, which was written by someone under the influence? EDIT So I did a little more research and it turns out Dennis R. Wier actually documented how he took LSD to wrap his head around a coding project: "At one point in the project I could not get an overall viewpoint for the operation of the entire system. It really was too much for my brain to keep all the subtle aspects and processing nuances clear so I could get a processing and design overview. After struggling with this problem for a few weeks, I decided to use a little acid to see if it would enable a breakthrough, because otherwise, I would not be able to complete the project and be certain of a consistent overall design"[1] There is also an interesting article on wired about Kevin Herbet, who used LSD to solve tough technical problems and chemist Kary Mullis even said "...that LSD had helped him develop the polymerase chain reaction that helps amplify specific DNA sequences." I was aware of BidNow but had not found the time to take a look at it nor seems it running before. Adrian convinced me it was worth some a further look. In brief I like it :-) It is more than Hello World, but still easy enough to follow. Bid Now is an online auction site designed to demonstrate how you can build highly scalable consumer applications using Windows Azure. It is built using Visual Studio 2008, Windows Azure and uses Windows Azure Storage. Auctions are processed using Windows Azure Queues and Worker Roles. Authentication is provided via Live Id. • Hill International Wins Oracle Eco-Enterprise Innovation Award

  In my last blog entry, I discussed Oracle’s Eco-Enterprise Innovation Award, part of the Oracle Excellence awards. Nominations for this year’s awards are due July 17. These awards are presented to organizations that use Oracle products to reduce their environmental footprint while improving their operational efficiency. One of last year’s winners was Hill International. Engineering News-Record magazine recently ranked Hill as the eighth-largest construction management firm in the United States. Hill International was able to streamline its forecasting and improve its visibility into its construction projects’ productivity and profitability using Oracle Primavera. They also implemented Oracle Hyperion Financial Management to standardize its financial reporting and forecasting processes and support its decision-making. With Oracle, Hill gained visibility into the true productivity of each project and cut its financial reporting cycle time from two weeks to one. The company also used the data generated to support new construction project proposals and determine the profitability of potential projects. Hill International realized significant cost savings and reduced its environmental impact on its US$400 million Comcast Center construction project in Philadelphia by centralizing its data storage, reducing paper usage, and maximizing project efficiency. It also leveraged the increased visibility offered by the Oracle solutions to make more environmentally-sound business decisions regarding on-site demolition, re-use of previous structures, green design of new facilities, procurement, and materials usage. • How do create an encrypted system with multiple Linux distributions?

  A few weeks ago I created a completely encrypted system on a notebook and must say I like the idea. It's a little bit annoying to enter the password on every boot, but it's nice to know even if I loose the computer I don't give my data to other people. With the alternate-cd it's easy to do. Now I have to setup a new system where I want to combine the new idea with my usual usage strategy. There I have more partitions: 3 system, Home, Different Data-Partitions for vm-data, photo-data and mp3-data. The background is that I prefer not to update a system. I prefer to install the new version parallel to the old system. So I can easily test it. Obviously the Data-Partitions are used for both systems. My questions is, how can I easily combine both my strategy and the crypto-approach? Or is it impossible. The way to do the crypted stuff by hand is in my eyes to complicated.

I have had multiple customers over the past two weeks asking for help around the integration. What's its capable of? How can I allow my users to click a button to run a BIP report? How can I kick off a report from a Siebel workflow? Start right here - this is a great white paper explaining whats now available with the integration using, the Siebel Report Business Service. Once you have consumed that from start to finish. Get on over to Oracle support and look for the following note that has code samples and lots of other good stuff! Siebel BI Publisher Reports Business Service (8.1.1.7+) [ID 1425724.1] The Reports Business Service enables BI Publisher reports to be executed from the Siebel application via a Workflow Process, or through scripting. The report is generated in the background by connecting to the BI Publisher server. The report output is stored in the Siebel File System and accessed from the My BI Publisher Reports view. Alternatively using appropriate methods, the report can be attached to an entity or sent to a particular delivery channel.

• JDK 7 Feature Complete Milestone Reached

  The JDK 7 project has reached Feature Complete (FC). This means that development and QA have finished all planned feature and test development work in the release and are moving the focus to testing and bug fixing on all supported JDK 7 platforms. This is a major step towards JDK 7 General Availability (GA) and implies that we are tracking close to the plan published on openjdk.java.net. (The original plan was FC on 12/16. We hit this less than a week late, but verifying that everything was done in time took a couple of weeks due to the intervening holidays.) The definition of the FC milestone allows for exceptions to be integrated later. There are very few such exceptions in the project, the most prominent being updated JAXP/JAXB/JAX-WS and integration of the enhanced JMX agent from JRockit. Our project management does not expect the exceptions to have any negative impact on the release plan. The project may still be delayed if the Expert Groups for the JSRs included in Java SE 7 (203, 292, 334, 336) decide to introduce changes which cannot be accomodated within the existing schedule. Apart from that caveat, Oracle remains confident with the published plan.

  I have seen similar question on this SE site but none comes close to a sure shot answer and many are rather subjective. So i am taking a website as an example to be more objective for you to decide its development price i should quote for the complete work.I would like to have specific figures. In past I have developed many projects for my classmates (Computer science and few .net) when i was in college and there i just arbitrarily quoted the price i will take depending on my mood and customer's ability to pay.. usually ranging from Rs.500 (about $10 USD) to Rs. 1500 (about $30 USD). I have also developed few websites but that was open-source and free. But this time impressed by my work i have got a client that wants to get a website developed similar to this: [ http://www.jeetle.in/ ]. So taking this website as an example tell me how much should i charge for complete work from designing to payment gateway implementation (Excluding the charge the payment gateway provider will take). Few information you might like to consider. I am the only developer on this project if that makes any difference. And i would be using ASP.Net and MSSQL Express for server side processing and jQuery on client. Time period for development offered is about 4 to 6 Weeks. Its like i know my work but not how much I'm worth

  I'm trying to do the examples within the GameDev.net Beat Detection article ( http://archive.gamedev.net/archive/reference/programming/features/beatdetection/index.html ) I have no issue with performing a FFT and getting the frequency data and doing most of the article. I'm running into trouble though in the section 2.B, Enhancements and beat decision factors. in this section the author gives 3 equations numbered R10-R12 to be used to determine how many bins go into each subband: R10 - Linear increase of the width of the subband with its index R11 - We can choose for example the width of the first subband R12 - The sum of all the widths must not exceed 1024 He says the following in the article: "Once you have equations (R11) and (R12) it is fairly easy to extract 'a' and 'b', and thus to find the law of the 'wi'. This calculus of 'a' and 'b' must be made manually and 'a' and 'b' defined as constants in the source; indeed they do not vary during the song." However, I cannot seem to understand how these values are calculated...I'm probably missing something simple, but learning fourier analysis in a couple of weeks has left me Decimated-in-Mind and I cannot seem to see it.

• Koans, now available in Python flavor

  Recently a Python developer friend with whom I was pair programming with suggested that I show him how to write a little Ruby. I responded by telling him to check out Ruby Koans as a starting point. However I wanted to try that in reverse at the same time with me learning some Python. I did a bit of googling, and sure enough someone had started writing some Python Koans. It just needed finishing... So, a few weeks later Python Koans is now complete and ready for action! It is available through Mercurial on Bitbucket: http://bitbucket.org/gregmalcolm/python_koans/wiki/Home It is also mirrored on Github: http://wiki.github.com/gregmalcolm/python_koans/ Converting it was fairly easy. Aside from the differing philosophical approaches behind the two languages, Ruby and Python are fairly similar. We had to come up with completely new material for a few subjects like multiple inheritance and decorators, but for most features in Ruby there is something roughly comparable in Python. I highly recommend writing tests (or koans) as a means to lean a new language or framework. I've learned a lot from doing this.

• What would be the level of effort required to implement a screencapture command on a PS3 game?

  Looking to see what the level of effort is for implementing a screen capture command into PS3 game by a mid-level PS3 game developer. Bonus for a description of what is involved in the process... EDIT Not sure how to get back my question since it was the first but let me clarify some things. @Nate Bross, nope I am not the actor although i've fielded calls for him on occasion @coderanger my intent was to try and speak to other PS3 developers, however coming from a web development no one in my social circle close or extended develops on the PS3. Additionally i'm interested in hearing the effort required in terms of hours so that this information can be passed on to a client. A client who has a game on the PS3 using the unreal engine. Convo with devs sometimes go something like "can you implement feature a" which gets a response "this will take us 8 weeks and an army". Trying to be educated before the ask. I hope that helps If anyone here is a PS3 game dev and would like to respond off site so as not to break NDA that would be awesome. @Roger it would be from within the game, something that users can use. Something akin to the iphone screencap utility. No need to get fancier than that.

• How different is WPF from ASP.NET [closed]

  I have been quickly moved over to a different project at work because the project needs more help. I was chosen because they are confident in my abilities and they thought I would be best fit for the next couple weeks to help finish the application out. I am a little nervous. I do tend to pick things up quickly. I was moved to a different project at the beginning of this year and now I know it like the back of my hand. Previously I was on another project. Both of these projects were an ASP.NET web application, which I believe is considered a winforms web application? The project I am moving to is a desktop WPF application. I have read that many people enjoy developing their applications with WPF. I just have never dealt/worked with WPF before. I like to consider myself pretty good at ASP.NET/C# and I do a solid job. We deal with a lot of data processing from the database and report generation. So I do get to experience C# more so than some web applications where the C# end of it is mostly just event driven and simple instructions. How different are the two? • Inconsistent accessibility error in xna.

  Hey all, you may remember me asking a question regarding a snake game I was creating about two weeks ago. Well I'm quite far now into making the game (thanks to a brilliant tutorial I found). But I've come across the error described named above. So heres my problem; I have a SnakeFood class that has a method called "Reposition". In the game1 class I have a method called "UpdateInGame" which calls the reposition method to load an orange that spawns in a random place every second. My latest piece of code changed the reposition method to allow the snake I have on the screen to not be overlapped by the orange that randomly spawns. Now I get the error (in full): Error 1 Inconsistent accessibility: parameter type 'TheMathsSnakeGame.Snake' is less accessible than method 'TheMathsSnakeGame.SnakeFood.Reposition(TheMathsSnakeGame.Snake)' C:\Users\Tom\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\TheMathsSnakeGame\TheMathsSnakeGame\SnakeFood.cs 33 21 TheMathsSnakeGame I understand what the errors trying to tell me but having changed the accessiblity of the methods, I still can't get it to work. • Nvidia API mismatch

  I had planned a day of relaxing with Portal 2 but on starting Steam (for the first time in a couple of weeks) I was greeted with the following message in the terminal: Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 270.41.19, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 270.41.06. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version. I'll confess I don't really know what it's talking about when it says driver. The verion of nvidia-current is 270.41.19. I thought that was the driver and module, all in one. I use the X-SWAT PPA and I have noted that the nvidia-settings package has boosted to 275.09.07. As this is just a settings application, I don't think this mismatch has anything to do with this. It's also not the same version as the problem being described. I'd rather not purge back to the standard Nvidia driver as it's less than stable on my GTX580. I would accept an answer that takes the manual setup and makes it recompile when the kernel recompiles (ie, some DKMS wizardry) but it has to work. I don't want to drop back to text-mode every time I restart after a kernel upgrade. Edit: Minecraft works without a single complaint about driver versions. Penumbra dies with roughly the same error when entering a game.

• Message Driven Bean JMS integration

  In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 and above the product introduced the concept of real time JMS integration within the Framework for interfacing. Customer familiar with older versions of the Framework will recall that we used a component called the Multi-purpose Listener (MPL) which was a very light service bus for calling interface channels (including JMS). The MPL is not supplied with all products and customers prefer to use Oracle SOA Suite and native methods rather then MPL. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 (and for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 via Patches 9454971, 9256359, 9672027 and 9838219) we introduced real time JMS integration natively for outbound JMS integration and using Message Driven Beans (MDB) for incoming integration. The outbound integration has not changed a lot between releases where you create an Outbound Message Type to indicate the record types to send out, create a JMS sender (though now you use the Real Time Sender) and then create an External System definition to complete the configuration. When an outbound message appears in the table of the type and external system configured (via a business event such as an algorithm or plug-in script) the Oracle Utilities Application Framework will place the message on the configured Queue linked to the JMS Sender. The inbound integration has changed. In the past you created XAI Receivers and specified configuration about what types of transactions to process. This is now all configuration file driven. The configuration files for the Business Application Server (ejb-jar.xml and weblogic-ejb-jar.xml) define Message Driven Beans and the queues to monitor. When a message appears on the queue, the MDB processes it through our web services interface. Configuration of the MDB can be native (via editing the configuration files) or through the new user exit capabilities (which is aimed at maintaining custom configuration across upgrades). The latter is better as you build fragments of configuration to make it easier to maintain. In the next few weeks a number of new whitepaper will be released to illustrate the features of the Oracle WebLogic JMS and Oracle SOA Suite integration capabilities.

• Which toolkit to use for 3D MMO game development?

  Lately i've been thinking about which path to follow for developing an 3D Online game. I have googled a lot but i couldnt find a good article that covers both game development and online server & client development in same context. This question has been in mind for about 2 weeks now. So.. yesterday i started developing a game from scratch by using Irrlicht.Net Wrapper to use Socket library of .NET which im already familiar. But i found out .Net wrapper of Irrlicht is not totally finished yet and still have lacks from the original. So i lost all my motives :/. So i thought why not to ask the experts before i run into another dead end... What Game Engine and Networking Library is best way to go for 3D MMO Development? Here is some of my early conclusions: Please let me know the ones im wrong. C++: Best Performance for 3D Graphics. Most Game Engines has native C++ Libraries. Lacks a Solid Socket Library .NETC++ Lacks Intellisense Support. C#: Intellisense Support NET Socket Library Lacks 3D Graphics Performance Lacks a native solid 3D Game Engine

• How to get multiple open-source projects to use a standard way of doing something.

  Problem In the last couple weeks, I've used 3 different "repository" tools (listed in alphabetical order): gradle ivy maven I'm calling them "repository" tools because I've also used sbt -- which fortunately uses ivy to manage it's cache or local repository. Each of these tools will create it's own repository. The defaults are: ~/.m2/repository for maven ~/.gradle/cache ~/.ivy2/cache Why can't they all use the same cache? Goal I'd like to change the world so that all three build tools could use the same cache. I'm looking for advice about issues I'm likely to run into and smart ways to get around them. By "use the same cache", I do not mean "retrieve from another build tool's cache". I mean "retrieve from and store in another build tool's cache". While I could go ahead and submit issues to the three projects, I know from experience (as a developer on an open source project), that if you want something done, you're best off getting it done yourself. Also, it seems like I need to get all 3 communities on board to some degree. What is the recommended approach for getting this kind of thing done? How do I approach the different communities? Do I work on patches for the 3 different projects, or would it be better off to create my own "interface" project that deals with these issues and have the 3 tools interface with that? Is this a standards question that I need to address on that front? Lastly, if I'm missing something and this is possible (in an globally configurable fashion), then please let me know.
