  • Persistent static routes fail on MacOS 10.6.5 startup!

    I'm unable to get static routes to persist a reboot on Mac OS 10.6.5. I've tried all of the methods prescribed in Google search results, and previous posts on this site. I've tried manually creating a launchd daemon, and used RouteSplit's launchd daemon to no avail. It's clear that the interface is not ready when these methods attempt to apply the route. This workstation in question is getting its IP from DHCP and probably hasn't gotten its DHCP lease when the command runs. We're able to apply the route by hand when logged in, but not through startup methods. Is there another way to apply this route by sneaking the command into something later, but before the login window appears to the user? Here is some relevant log info from system.log. You can see the "route: writing to routing socket: Network is unreachable" errors where my launchd script fires off. I've tried adding extra "sleep" and "ipconfig waitall" statements later in the script but this doesn't fly.   • How to install Mac OS X from Windows without a CD

    I have two partitions, one for windows the other for Mac OS X. Recently, my Mac OS X crashed and my partition rendered unbootable. When I insert Mac OS X's installation CD everything seems normal from startup, to choosing whether to boot from Windows or CD, until the CD boots. The screen flickers and it becomes extremely dark can barely see anything but I can see that it is booted correctly. I tried increasing brightness but that did not work. After hours of trying to read what is on the screen and guessing where to click the installation did not go through... It took more than a couple of hours so I restarted. Now the partition is accessible through Windows but is not bootable. TL;DR Is it possible to install Mac OS X on a visible partition without the CD through Windows XP?... Thanks

  • Keynote presentation in conjunction with other app?

    The short version: I'd like to tell Apple Keynote to switch to a specific app (never leaving full-screen mode) before a certain slide appears, then display that slide as soon as I switch back. Some more details: I'm going to show off five major improvements in an upcoming release of our app. I want one slide highlighting the feature, then one or two showing some details, perhaps with screenshots. After that, so people get a better impression of what I'm talking about, I'll show it off live — to do this, I have to switch to a VM or remote session (since this is a Windows app). Then, I'd like to switch back and go to the next feature. I.e., it would be similar to Apple's "Demo" slides in a cursive font, except not with a different screen, or different computer. It's this switching back and forth that I want to make smooth, just to wow the audience a little. Can I perhaps do a "special" slide in Keynote that tells it to run an AppleScript? Better yet, to switch to an app, and wait until I switch back, and then automatically advance to the next slide?

  • How to rescue from an SD (SDHC) card that I can't reformat (possible hardware failure)

    I have a transcend 16GB SDHC card and a lot of photos on it that I'd like to recover. When I plug it into the SD card reader, it takes a while for the Mac to even recognize that there's a disk present, and it shows up as 1.07GB with geometry 520/64/63 (according to fdisk). First I tried file recovery: PhotoRec: no files are found (the images are in CR2 format and I'm using testdisk-6.14-WIP which claims to recognize that format under TIF) dd / ddrescue: they create a 1.07GB image, same problem as above TestDisk: doesn't find any partitions to recover I found a source saying that the correct geometry for this type of SD Card is Heads 255, Sectors/Track 63, Cylinders 1953, so I tried manually setting that geometry in PhotoRec/TestDisk. No improvement. Next I tried formatting the disk with fdisk. After writing and quitting, I ran fdisk again and it reported that the new format hadn't been saved on the disk. I also tried resetting the format/partitions with TestDisk and that failed also. The fdisk log is below. I don't really care about the card, I've already ordered a new SanDisk card. But I'd like to get the data off. Maybe, is there any way to force dd or some other tool to create an image of the disk based on the original geometry and not on what the card "thinks" its geometry is? Or am I missing something?

    Ok, I feel dumb. I've put many hours into this and found nothing, yet. When I was using Windows I had this little tool called WinSplit Revolution. What it did was letting you divide your screen into how many and of how much size you choose "virtual monitors". You set one time of you want to divide your monitor, then everytime WinSplit is opened the monitor is automatically divided into Virtual Monitors. I tried Divvy but I found no way to divide my screen into arbitrary "virtual monitors", I need a couple of clicks to select a 3x3 space on a 9x9 grid. Before starting coding something like this can you tell me if you already know of some software that does window management like this?

    Hello. I have a problem (using Mac OS X 10.5.8) with the access rights of a folder that was presumably created by a virus on a disk-on-key drive when I used it with a PC. I can't remove the folder or change it's name. In Finder's Info window the Lock box is unchecked and uncheckable - if I try to check it it flips back to off.   • How do I use an internal SSD as a scratch disk for FCP X?

    I'm contemplating setting up my MacBook Air as a video editing machine. If I do this, I'll upgrade to a 256 GB SSD, and I should be able to keep around 100 GB or more free for video editing. The video files would of course be stored externally, but save purchasing some expensive Thunderbolt RAID device (which I suppose is gradually becoming more of an option), it will be slow for read/writes. How can I have a set up where I take advantage of my SSD's speed for a scratch disk/cache for FCP X, but still have the TB(s) of storage of externals? I don't want to have to be moving files constantly back and forth, this is about saving time not wasting it.

  • How do I keep folders synced and backed up between two macs using a Linux NAS (rsync?)

    I've got two primary computers, one Mac Pro and one MacBook Pro for when I'm on the go. I've also got a Linux sever which also acts as NAS. Currently I backup the entire computers to an external drive with Time Machine which is rather useless and doesn't sync anything. What I really want to do is to keep my important files synced between both computers and my NAS (which is running RAID 5), that way I'm not backing up easily replaceable systemfiles and I've got all my important files in 3 places where two of them are running raid so at least 5 drives would have to crash at the same time before actual data loss occur. Folders I want to keep synced is basically my photo, documents, development, mamp and work folders and then I want to keep the user library folder backed up but not synced. I'm thinking that I'd have to use rsync but don't know how. Before suggesting Dropbox and similar suggestions I don't want to use them because of several reasons some of them being security (Dropbox obviously proved this), Speed (sometimes I'll sync gigabytes of data and that will be significantly faster locally and probably even through VPN as I have a Gigabit pipe), Space (space on my NAS is cheap and only practically limited by my needs), reliability (even if my internet were to go down I still need to be able to keep my files synced incase I'd need to go somewhere on the fly), price (I already have all the hardware and for the amount of gigabytes and bandwidth I'd need I doubt that there's any free or cheap service). Those are my main reason for wanting to keep it locally. I'm sorry for any spelling or grammatical mistakes that I've might have done. I'm writing this on my smartphone from a shaky train and English isn't my mother tongue. I gratefully appreciate any answers even if only partly solving my problem.

  • MacBook can't use internet, but nslookup and ping both work

    I have a user with a new high-end MacBook Pro that can't use the internet. He can connect to either our wired or wireless network and do things like browse file shares, but can get no further. When I brought the machine in for testing, I found that I could do an nslookup just fine, and I'm able to ping addresses returned by nslookup just fine. I'm even able to bring up web pages by entering the IP address into the address bar directly. However, when I try to ping the domain name rather than the IP address, it just sits there. So apparently I can either do name resolution or communicate with an address, but not both at the same time. Again, these symptoms occur on both the wired and wireless network. Other machines on our network, including a few other Macs, don't have this issue. Any ideas?

    I have a directory like this mkdir test cd test touch file{0,1}.txt otherfile{0,1}.txt stuff{0,1}.txt I want to run some command such as ls on certain types of files in the directory and have the * (glob) expand to all possibilities for the filename. echo 'file otherfile' | tr ' ' '\n' | xargs -I % ls %*.txt This command does not expand the glob and tries to look for the literal 'file*.txt' How do I write a similar command that expands the globs? (I want to use xargs so the command can be run in parallel)

  • Would firewire networking be better than 100Megabit ethernet?

    My office network has a fully switched 1000Megabit ethernet network. I have an Apple iMac with a Gigabit NIC and FireWire, and a Compaq laptop with a 100Megabit NIC and a 4-pin FireWire interface. Accessing my office's shared drives using my laptop is (obviously) much loswer using my laptop than my iMac. Would I see a noticeible performance boost if I enabled Internet Connection Sharing on my iMac and shared the private ethernet network from my iMac with my laptop over FireWire? FireWire is 480Mbit/sec, right? So would I see roughly 4x speed improvement with such a setup?

  • Deleting a tag from lots of images at once in Aperture?

    Aperture makes it easy to tag lost of pictures at once by just selecting all the images, and the dragging and dropping tags from the tags pallet onto the selected images. But when you need to do the reverse, I can't find a way other than editing each image individually. Is there a way I could select multiple images at once and strip a tag out of all of them?     I'm at my wit's end trying to control SMB file sharing on my Mac. (OS X 10.5 Leopard). I want to do something fairly simple: share a particular (non-home, non-Public) folder over my my SMB/Windows network with two users (accounts are local to my Mac), and share no other folders with anyone. The instructions on the internet are fairly straightforward: add the folders to be shared to the File Sharing panel of the Sharing System Preferences pane: ..and ensure that I'm sharing through SMB: However, when I actually try to connect via a SMB client (Windows XP in this case), the share does not appear. I see my home directory, "Macintosh HD", and my printers, but not the folder I just shared. I ensured that the underlying directory had the proper permissions (since this seems to affect share visibility) and that the "Shared Folder" checkbox was checked: ...but this didn't have any effect. I checked /etc/smb.conf but there was nothing obviously out of place there. I've also restarted smbd and rebooted. What else should I be looking for?

  • Redirect URL using Mac OS X Server Lion

    I have just set up a Mac Mini with OS X Lion Server to host my own website. I have registered multiple domain names, but I would like the user to be automatically redirected to my main domain name if they type in one of the others (i.e. if the user types in www.myotherdomain.com the URL will be forwarded instantly to www.mymaindomain.com). In the Web settings of Server.app, you can easily add additional domains (which works) but it does not change the URL in the browser to www.mymaindomain.com. It keeps www.myotherdomain.com whilst still displaying the correct pages. Does the redirects or alias options do what I want? I can't seem to work out how to use them (there seems to be no documentation that I can find). In Redirects, you need to enter: 'Redirect Type' (Exact Match or Regular Expression) 'Redirect Path' 'Destination URL' 'Redirect Status' (Original was permanently moved, etc) In Alias, you need to enter: 'Alias Type' (Exact Match or Regular Expression) 'Alias Path' 'Destination Folder' Any help would be great.
