  • TrueCrypt: Open volume without mounting

    I have a corrupt TrueCrypt volume. When I try to mount it, the password is fine but I get an error: hdiutil attach failed no mountable file systems. I just need to open it without TrueCrypt trying to mount it too, so I can use that partition in a data recovery program. Also it's just an image file volume. I have read the documentation here: http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=command-line-usage But I can't figure out which switch I need to use to only open an image and not mount it. I am using the Mac version, and I have set up an alias for the TrueCrypt shell command, so I can just type: truecrypt -t -v - ?? [][]..

  • Why would the 'show processlist' command speed up normally slow requests to my remote DB? (connected via VPN)

    I am running a local Django development server that connects to a remote MySQL server via a VPN (IPSec). Request times are awfully slow and I consistently see timeouts. Attempting to diagnose the problem, I logged in to the remote database and ran: show full processlist Immediately, the local server went from idle to working. The page had not yet completely loaded, but progress had been made (debug logs confirm this). When I ran 'show full processlist' several times more in succession, the request completed quickly. I can currently reproduce this - unless I run 'show full processlist' over and over on the remote server, my local request usually times out. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen? I'm running Django 1.3 and OS X 10.7. Note: I realize this may be entirely not be a question with a clear-cut answer and is probably my fault, but it is odd and reproducable, so I hope someone can at least point me the right direction.   • Increasing System Menu Font Size for OS X Lion

    My father-in-law recently picked up an iMac (with OS X 10.7 - Lion) and loves it. However, his eyesight isn't that great and would like to find a way to increase the font size of the system menu bar like he could on his old Windows system. I've been unable to find anything in the system configuration that might work. I've heard that the TinkerTool might be able to do it, but I'm a little hesitant to monkey around with his system - I don't want to introduce system stability issues. Question: Has anyone been able to find any good way to increase the system menu font size?

  • Where can I find a useful Unicode fallback font for Mac OS X?

    On every browser I've tried (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Omniweb), when I go to a web page containing somewhat less-common characters, I can't see the glyphs. For example, on the Wikipedia page for the Bengali Language, the very first line contains a string of squares; on Windows, I can see the Bengali writing. On Windows, as long as I have the Arial Unicode MS font installed, these characters fall back to that font and display properly. Mac OS X doesn't seem to ship with a font containing these Unicode characters (it has Arial Unicode MS, but it must be a subset of the Windows version because Bengali doesn't display in that font). I checked on my Snow Leopard DVD and I installed "Additional Fonts" from the Optional Installs package, but I'm still missing many languages. Is there any good, free font that contains a large collection of languages? I know creating fonts is difficult and time-consuming, but it seems like including at least one font like this with operating systems should be standard by now.

Main: a 24 inch Dell monitor that Mac OS X detects and displays on 1920x1200 Secondary: a 19 inch Chimei monitor that supports resolution 1440x900 but Mac OS X detects it as 1344x1008. How can I force a 1400x900 resolution on my secondary monitor?

  • Persistent static routes fail on MacOS 10.6.5 startup!

    I'm unable to get static routes to persist a reboot on Mac OS 10.6.5. I've tried all of the methods prescribed in Google search results, and previous posts on this site. I've tried manually creating a launchd daemon, and used RouteSplit's launchd daemon to no avail. It's clear that the interface is not ready when these methods attempt to apply the route. This workstation in question is getting its IP from DHCP and probably hasn't gotten its DHCP lease when the command runs. We're able to apply the route by hand when logged in, but not through startup methods. Is there another way to apply this route by sneaking the command into something later, but before the login window appears to the user? Here is some relevant log info from system.log. You can see the "route: writing to routing socket: Network is unreachable" errors where my launchd script fires off. I've tried adding extra "sleep" and "ipconfig waitall" statements later in the script but this doesn't fly.     I have two partitions, one for windows the other for Mac OS X. Recently, my Mac OS X crashed and my partition rendered unbootable. When I insert Mac OS X's installation CD everything seems normal from startup, to choosing whether to boot from Windows or CD, until the CD boots. The screen flickers and it becomes extremely dark can barely see anything but I can see that it is booted correctly. I tried increasing brightness but that did not work. After hours of trying to read what is on the screen and guessing where to click the installation did not go through... It took more than a couple of hours so I restarted. Now the partition is accessible through Windows but is not bootable. TL;DR Is it possible to install Mac OS X on a visible partition without the CD through Windows XP?... Thanks

  • Keynote presentation in conjunction with other app?

    The short version: I'd like to tell Apple Keynote to switch to a specific app (never leaving full-screen mode) before a certain slide appears, then display that slide as soon as I switch back. Some more details: I'm going to show off five major improvements in an upcoming release of our app. I want one slide highlighting the feature, then one or two showing some details, perhaps with screenshots. After that, so people get a better impression of what I'm talking about, I'll show it off live — to do this, I have to switch to a VM or remote session (since this is a Windows app). Then, I'd like to switch back and go to the next feature. I.e., it would be similar to Apple's "Demo" slides in a cursive font, except not with a different screen, or different computer. It's this switching back and forth that I want to make smooth, just to wow the audience a little. Can I perhaps do a "special" slide in Keynote that tells it to run an AppleScript? Better yet, to switch to an app, and wait until I switch back, and then automatically advance to the next slide?

  • How to rescue from an SD (SDHC) card that I can't reformat (possible hardware failure)

    I have a transcend 16GB SDHC card and a lot of photos on it that I'd like to recover. When I plug it into the SD card reader, it takes a while for the Mac to even recognize that there's a disk present, and it shows up as 1.07GB with geometry 520/64/63 (according to fdisk). First I tried file recovery: PhotoRec: no files are found (the images are in CR2 format and I'm using testdisk-6.14-WIP which claims to recognize that format under TIF) dd / ddrescue: they create a 1.07GB image, same problem as above TestDisk: doesn't find any partitions to recover I found a source saying that the correct geometry for this type of SD Card is Heads 255, Sectors/Track 63, Cylinders 1953, so I tried manually setting that geometry in PhotoRec/TestDisk. No improvement. Next I tried formatting the disk with fdisk. After writing and quitting, I ran fdisk again and it reported that the new format hadn't been saved on the disk. I also tried resetting the format/partitions with TestDisk and that failed also. The fdisk log is below. I don't really care about the card, I've already ordered a new SanDisk card. But I'd like to get the data off. Maybe, is there any way to force dd or some other tool to create an image of the disk based on the original geometry and not on what the card "thinks" its geometry is? Or am I missing something?

    Ok, I feel dumb. I've put many hours into this and found nothing, yet. When I was using Windows I had this little tool called WinSplit Revolution. What it did was letting you divide your screen into how many and of how much size you choose "virtual monitors". You set one time of you want to divide your monitor, then everytime WinSplit is opened the monitor is automatically divided into Virtual Monitors. I tried Divvy but I found no way to divide my screen into arbitrary "virtual monitors", I need a couple of clicks to select a 3x3 space on a 9x9 grid. Before starting coding something like this can you tell me if you already know of some software that does window management like this?

  • How do I use an internal SSD as a scratch disk for FCP X?

    I'm contemplating setting up my MacBook Air as a video editing machine. If I do this, I'll upgrade to a 256 GB SSD, and I should be able to keep around 100 GB or more free for video editing. The video files would of course be stored externally, but save purchasing some expensive Thunderbolt RAID device (which I suppose is gradually becoming more of an option), it will be slow for read/writes. How can I have a set up where I take advantage of my SSD's speed for a scratch disk/cache for FCP X, but still have the TB(s) of storage of externals? I don't want to have to be moving files constantly back and forth, this is about saving time not wasting it.

  • Deleting a tag from lots of images at once in Aperture?

    Aperture makes it easy to tag lost of pictures at once by just selecting all the images, and the dragging and dropping tags from the tags pallet onto the selected images. But when you need to do the reverse, I can't find a way other than editing each image individually. Is there a way I could select multiple images at once and strip a tag out of all of them?   • How do I keep folders synced and backed up between two macs using a Linux NAS (rsync?)

    I've got two primary computers, one Mac Pro and one MacBook Pro for when I'm on the go. I've also got a Linux sever which also acts as NAS. Currently I backup the entire computers to an external drive with Time Machine which is rather useless and doesn't sync anything. What I really want to do is to keep my important files synced between both computers and my NAS (which is running RAID 5), that way I'm not backing up easily replaceable systemfiles and I've got all my important files in 3 places where two of them are running raid so at least 5 drives would have to crash at the same time before actual data loss occur. Folders I want to keep synced is basically my photo, documents, development, mamp and work folders and then I want to keep the user library folder backed up but not synced. I'm thinking that I'd have to use rsync but don't know how. Before suggesting Dropbox and similar suggestions I don't want to use them because of several reasons some of them being security (Dropbox obviously proved this), Speed (sometimes I'll sync gigabytes of data and that will be significantly faster locally and probably even through VPN as I have a Gigabit pipe), Space (space on my NAS is cheap and only practically limited by my needs), reliability (even if my internet were to go down I still need to be able to keep my files synced incase I'd need to go somewhere on the fly), price (I already have all the hardware and for the amount of gigabytes and bandwidth I'd need I doubt that there's any free or cheap service). Those are my main reason for wanting to keep it locally. I'm sorry for any spelling or grammatical mistakes that I've might have done. I'm writing this on my smartphone from a shaky train and English isn't my mother tongue. I gratefully appreciate any answers even if only partly solving my problem.

    I have a directory like this mkdir test cd test touch file{0,1}.txt otherfile{0,1}.txt stuff{0,1}.txt I want to run some command such as ls on certain types of files in the directory and have the * (glob) expand to all possibilities for the filename. echo 'file otherfile' | tr ' ' '\n' | xargs -I % ls %*.txt This command does not expand the glob and tries to look for the literal 'file*.txt' How do I write a similar command that expands the globs? (I want to use xargs so the command can be run in parallel)
