  • Help Installing SQL Server 2008 Express Edition

    Ok I am running Windows 7, 64 bit. I cleaned of SQL server 2005 completely off my system leaving only SQL Compact Edition. I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=01af61e6-2f63-4291-bcad-fd500f6027ff&displaylang=en and installed SQL Server 2008 Express Edition Service Pack 1. After the install, under my start bar menu all i have for SQL configuration tools are the Configuration Manager, Error and Usage Reporting and the Install Center. I don't have the SQL Managment Studio. So I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b&displaylang=en and downloaded the SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express but when I try to install it I get a warning says This program has known compatibility issues and that I need to Install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. I thought that is what I installed. So, I tried to continue running the install but I then get an error message that says Invoke or BeginInvoke can not be called on a Form before it is opened... How can I check if Service pack 1 is installed or not? What should I do? Also I rebooted my system and checked for Windows Updates and it says that Windows it up to date.

  • Speeding up Outlook Express on Windows XP over satellite

    My brother is in the field with Doctors Without Borders. I'm posting this question on his behalf. We use outlook express (on a pc running windows XP) and a 9600 baud dial up satellite phone modem to get our email direct from the server in Paris. As this is a very expensive way to communicate (our satellite bill is $50K a year, no joke), it seems like trying to streamline is a good idea. Here's the question- when we connect, the sequence goes: Send outbox mails. This goes pretty quickly, probably 10-15 seconds for each email, up to maybe a couple minutes for an email of 150k or so). The status bar moves pretty quickly, according to the emails sent. The system then says "Checking for new messages on (our account name), and "Receiving list of messages from server". This takes a long time. Like 10-15 minutes. The status bar crawls along. Then it receives the messages. "Receiving messages from server". Again, each message takes 10-15 seconds, and this part moves along reasonably fast. I'm curious as to what is going on in the second part. It takes forever, and doesn't seem to be part of the sending or receiving messages themselves. Is there a way to speed up the process by changing a preference with communicating with the server or something? Does anyone have any advice for him speeding up what Outlooks Express is doing? Obviously his software is ancient and adding more software is not realistic based on the connection speed. Thanks!

  • Weird problem with Visual C++ 2010 Express

    This has happened before on my Vista Premium installation, and now it's happening on my Windows 7 Home Premium installation. Basically everytime I install Visual Studio Express 2010, it works fine for a random amount of time but then suddenly starts to hide from my sight -- that's the best way I can explain it. VS does not crash, and from what I can tell it does not freeze either; It continues to work, I can even "minimize" and "maximize" it; I simply cannot see it nor can I interact with it any meaningful way. Also: After the "crash" there are no logs in: Root\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Express - ENU. Nor any other files created at the time of the crash. There are no traces in the event viewer. The program seems to be functioning perfectly in the process manager. If I reinstall Visual C++, it works normally for a seemingly random period of time before going cookoo again. I am stumped. This has never happened to me before, with any other program. And yet I doubt it really is a problem with Visual C++; More like something general that seems to have picked on it for some reason. Still, after a clean install with a new OS, I'm kinda thinking there's something wrong here. Any help would be appreciated, altough I suspect that the answer to this question will make me feel embarassed. P.S. Not sure if it helps, but I think around the same time I started having problems (On both installations) with windows turning off the display when I leave the computer, and then seemingly crashing when it turns it on again -- in fact when I interact with it it seems to be responding to my commands without actually display anything.

    Hi there, I'm back to C/C++ after some break. I've a following problem: I've a solution where I've several projects (compilable and linkable). Now I need to add another project to this solution which depends on some sources from other projects. My new project compiles without any problems (I've added "existing sources" to my project). the error: 1>Linking... 1>LicenceManager.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "int __cdecl saveLic(char *,struct Auth *)" (?saveLic@@YAHPADPAUAuth@@@Z) referenced in function "public: void __thiscall LicenceManager::generateLicence(int,char *)" (?generateLicence@LicenceManager@@QAEXHPAD@Z) 1>LicenceManager.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "void __cdecl getSysInfo(struct Auth *)" (?getSysInfo@@YAXPAUAuth@@@Z) referenced in function "public: void __thiscall LicenceManager::generateLicence(int,char *)" (?generateLicence@LicenceManager@@QAEXHPAD@Z) Functions saveLic, and getSysInfo are defined in files which I've added to my new project from existing ones. There is object file created during compilation with those functions in target dir, but my LicenceManager class doesn't want to link. I use some extern "C" , and #pragma pack somewhere, but no more fancy stuff. I think every directory, lib and other necessary dependencies are visible in settings for this project.     I have VS 2008 Professional Edition. After the installation (which included SQL Server 2008), I decided to install SQL Server 2008 Express Edition with Advanced Tools (so I could get SQL Server Management Studio on it). So I uninstalled the SQL Express that came with VS 2008, and installed the standalone SQL Server Express 2008 version with advanced tools. However, When I try to logon onto SQL Server Management Studio using: .\SQLEXPRESS as Server name and Windows Authentication as the authentication, I get the following message: TITLE: Connect to Server ------------------------------ Cannot connect to .\SQLEXPRESS. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. What I'm receiving instead is a named instance instead of local such as MachineName\SQLEXPRESS which is not what I want to receive. I need a local instance instead of a named instance due to the way my code is written to be able to install and talk with the databases in question. I would change it, trust me, were it not the fact that this install package is a replacement to a previous package that used the MSDE installer. I have to be able to support both through code. Any suggestions are welcome but a clear and concise method to get the installer to quietly install using only the machine name is my main goal. Thanks for the help and support!

  • Why is my Internet connection randomly dropping?

    Ever since I have installed 12.04 (clean install not an upgrade), i have been having a drop in the Internet connection. The drop in the connection can be anything from 15 seconds to about 3 mins, and then the connection comes back. This behaviour happens while I am actively browsing the Internet, or if I wake up the computer and open Firefox (sometimes I have connection and sometimes I don't) . Please note that when the internet connection is on, it is not slow (as speedtest.net results show) In the beginning, I thought it was a problem with the driver r8169 for my RTL8111/8168B Ethernet card, so I downloaded the r8168 from Realtek website, followed the detailed instructions (blacklisted r8169, changed the file to '.bsh' ...), but still the same problem persisted. So I switched to a wireless connection, and I got the same problem with internet connection dropping randomly. Any ideas? I've tried deleting their profile and setting it up again, repairing office, uninstalling completely and then reinstalling, and swapping out memory sticks.   • Prevent Exchange Server from advertising itself on domain

    I'm in the middle of setting up an Exchange 2010 Server. Currently, we use a SaaS provider for Exchange 2007 services. Some (but not all) of my users have been reporting that they are receiving Outlook/Exchange login prompts to login to the new Exchange server. This is happening without any intervention on the client's machines. The Exchange server is a member of the domain and connects to the domain site remotely through a site-to-site VPN. What can I do to prevent these login prompts from appearing? Will shutting down the new server until it is time to switch resolve these issues? A little more info: I found that on one of the client computers, all of the settings for Outlook over HTTP had been changed (automatically) from webmail.provider.com to mail.company.com (the latter being the new server). This happened when I enabled Outlook Anywhere access on Exchange 2010. I changed the client's settings back, and everything was groovy. But, when I disabled Outlook Anywhere again, the logon prompt came back.

  • Duplicate forwarded messages in Blackberry when using BIS

    Our Setup External email arrives at a Postfix server, is scanned, and then forwarded via settings in transport (using the RELAY:[{ip-address}] for a given address) to an Exchange 2007 server. Some users are on Exchange, but a few are still on the Postfix server (they will be moved in the near future). IMAPS is provided for external connections via Dovecot; in-house, IMAP is provided for the Gateway and native MAPI is used for Exchange/Outlook. Blackberries are connected via BIS, which uses Dovecot as a reverse-proxy IMAPS service to connect to Exchange (when the mailbox exists on Exchange, otherwise it connects to the mailbox on the gateway). The Issue We have a user that, when they forward an email on their Outlook client, they get a duplicate of the original message on their Blackberry. When I say duplicate, I mean that they have a copy of the forwarded version of the message (i.e. their version of the message that they obtained hitting the forward button), and a copy of the original message that shows up at the same time. The expected behavior is to just see the forwarded message, not the forwarded message and a 2nd copy of the original message. We've only seen this with Outlook users that also have a Blackberry. Other IMAP clients, such as OS X Mail or Thunderbird, do not exhibit this behavior when connecting to the Exchange server; forwarded messages work as expected. The Questions what is causing this to happen? why does it only affect Outlook/Blackberry setups, and not TBird/Blackberry or OSX-Mail/Blackberry? how do we get it to stop, before people go insane and never forward messages again?

  • PCI-E riser card prevents server from starting at all

    I need to replace the RAID controller in a server, and the new one is PCI Express while the old one was 64bit PCI. The server has both slots, but the riser card that was installed does not contain the PCI Express part. So I bought a new 4x PCI Express riser card (Delock 89103), but the moment I put it into the slot the server does not start up at all. It does not even get to POST, at most the power LED flashed once but nothing else happens at all. It does not power up the server at all. If I remove the riser card it starts up fine. If I put the riser card into a regular desktop computer it seems to work in general. Is there anything else I have to pay attention to when buying a riser card? My naive assumption would be that any PCI Express riser card should work. Or is my riser card likely to be damaged or out-of-spec and the server is just more picky? How do I get it to work, or how can I at least find a riser card that will work with my server? The server mainboard is a Super Micro PDSMi+.

    Hi all, I install ORK.exe on my Windows 7 machine to create a copy of my profile so I will have it as a template to push it to new user. So basically, I ran the Profile Wizard to create an .ops file. I saved it in my documents for the moment. Right now, I'm trying to import that file into my Outlook but I just can't figure it out! My goal is to have a profile template to push to new users when they log in for first time. Thanks a bunch in advance! EDIT: I just figured it out. But I have a problem: When I create my profile, Outlook 2007 on exchange was not in cache mode. So I created my profile with the Profile Wizard with cache mode disabled. I save my outlook.ops in My documents. Then, I enabled cache mode so when I will import my .ops file, it should be restore as cache mode disabled... But When I do that, cache mode is still checked (which I don't want to) Am I doing something wrong? I guess so but I just can't figure it out

  • Should be simple: existing laptop with local user and outlook 2007 migrate on same computer to domain user with outlook 2007 emails intact

    I have Dell Laptop with windows 7 64 bit and for the last year it's been just a machine with an account like: machine\john there are files in folders and stuff in c:\users\john and john uses outlook 2007 as a pop3 client and has identifiable local appdata pst files. Now I installed a server and want to have everything be domain-centric so I added this laptop to the domain with admin credentials and then logged in as a domain user as: domain\john.smith Now I want to duplicate machine\john (outlook emails mostly) to domain\john.smith. In the past I used the Files and Settings Xfer Wizard and done. I tried that here and it crunched away for a while, made the file, but the restore had no effect - it ran for a while, had a progress bar, but it's like nothing happened at all afterwards. I've rebooted the machine, logged in as domain administrator as the first user to log on after the restart and tried: c:\users\john xcopy c:\users\john c:\users\john.smith /V /C /F /H /K /Y /E ...and it copies some of it, but when it gets to c:\users\john.smith\appdata\local\application data it chokes "Access denied, unable to create directory" I also tried logging in as domain\john.smith and copying the entire directory that the PSTs are in from machine\john and a lot of the mail was there when I launched outlook after replacing the PSTs, but not all of them??? I got errors about files in use when doing this method, which I figure must be why not all the old emails are in the inbox?... There must be some extremely simple way to do what must be a very common requirement. Any guidance appreciated.

    I'm pulling up the Global Address List from Outlook like so... Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Application oApp = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Application(); AddressList gal = oApp.Session.GetGlobalAddressList(); ...with the aim of eventually being able to search through this in my own application to retrieve contact information which I can then supply to a method that squirrels off an email. Unfortunately given that my own GAL has about 20K entries in (the customers much more) using a foreach or something simply doesn't work in an acceptable timeframe. I want to pass a string like "Tom" to a method and have it return a list of possible contacts. Is this possible outside of actually opening up Outlook and creating the mail there? Note: There are a couple of other questions similar to this but most seem to have no good answer. I'm hoping I have more luck.

Also, I would like to know if C programs run with the same speed as in both the professional and express editions.     I was doing some rounding calculations and happened upon a question. How can I express the highest quantity less than 1 for a given floating point type? That is, how I write/represent value x such that x < 1, x + y >= 1 for any y > 0. In fractions this would be x = (q-1)/q where q is the precision of the type. For example, if you are counting in 1/999 increments then x = 998/999. For a given type (float, double, long double), how could one express the value x in code? I also wonder if such a value actually exists for all values of y. That is, as y's exponent gets smaller perhaps the relation doesn't hold anymore. So an answer with some range restriction on y is also acceptable. (The value of x I want still does exist, the relationship may just not properly express it.)
