  Hi, I'm considering building a new desktop PC from components. For the last 7/8 or so years I have almost exlusively used laptops, and so have fallen behind a bit with knowledge of various hardware technologies. Anyway, now I'm considering building a new desktop machine. Mainly for development work, but also would be nice to do a bit of gaming. The two main criteria are: I would like the first build to be relatively low cost. I would like to select components that will allow me to upgrade in the future without throwing too much away. Can anyone recommend a setup? Thanks

• Suspected power supply issue? PC repeatedly whirs for some seconds and then dies.

  I've come home today and switched on the PC I've built a few months ago only for the machine to whir for a few short seconds and then die. It repeats this until I disconnect the power lead. Nothing is output to the screen and this cut out happens very quickly after switching it on. What could this be and how could it be fixed? Is it the power supply? I'm in despair :-( My spec is below, everything is new and was bought and assembled within the last 6months, system has been fantastic until now.   Is their a graphics that runs on both Mac & PC? I've seen Unity and thats a possibility, I'm wondering if there are any other choices. Ideally I want to port the same C++ game code to both PC & Mac platforms, but let the underlying game/graphics engine take advantage of the appropriate hardware. edit: I'm looking on the level of Torque, Gamebryo & Unreal. • How to get flash player to display under content on a PC?

  Long story short, I'm developing a theme template for a blog that enables you to view the posts in blocks. The main part of the post is displayed at first, then the secondary content is displayed over that when you hover over the post block. Everything works fine on a Mac Versions of all major browsers, but start browsing on a PC, and all hell breaks loose when you start trying to display content over Flash Video embeds. The flash element remains visible over the content. It's completely unusable. • Is it possible at all to install Ubuntu 10.04 on Windows 7 (64-bit) using its Virtual PC?

  It was said that Win 7's Virtual PC is not suitable for installing Ubuntu 10.04... Is there any method at all that it will work? The following is the scenario I ran into: The first time Ubuntu 10.04 installation CD-R boots up, it asked for the Language, and "Install Ubuntu" and then the screen has vertical green bars and then the VPC just closed. The 2nd or 3rd time it booted up, there is no asking of Language or "Install Ubuntu" and just shut down the VPC, sometimes with vertical green bars. I even created another new hard drive and same thing happened. And created VPC 02, and same thing happened. Created VPC 03 with a fixed hard drive size of 60GB and same thing happened.

• How can browsers in VMs resolve hostnames of websites on parent PC?

  I have a number of local websites in development on my Windows PC, set up as virtual hosts within Apache, with hostnames (along the lines of dev.example.com) resolved via the hosts file, so I can test them out them with various browsers. I now want to extend browser testing to running browsers in various OSs in virtual machines, and want to be able to resolve dev.example.com from the VMs. Currently these are a mix of VMWare Server and VirtualPC. I know I can edit the hosts file on any Windows VMs, but this is a bit fiddly and I'd like a solution which is independent of the individual VMs. I think what I need is a nameserver, but what's the simplest way of going about this? I'd like everything to be self-contained on the one machine. I think I can cover firewall and Apache permissioning issues.

  Hey, I'm a developer on nice space MMO using Flash. On new PCs performance is quite good, but some features shouldn't be enabled on older PCs because the framerate drops to shit if we do. Flash wasn't made for this, but hey, pushing boundaries is fun. An example is fullscreen mode. Of course every user can manually enable it, but "advertising" it to a user with and oldie PC would be a bad idea - but for the Alienware crowd it would be dumb not to. So I want to find out how "capable" a user's PC is to decide if I should enable or disable some features for him. Any ideas? Thanks, Sujan

  I have about 70 pc's with exactly same hardware. I decided to automate turning on and off. I took 1 PC. Here is what I've done: Changed bios configuration so that now pc's waking when I turn on AC switch Installed Windows XP and configured so that I can turn off remotelly, changed workgroup name to "WG1", and pc name to "ExamPC" Then created acronis backup image of this pc I installed this image in several PC's and tried to test All worked well till windows opened. The problem is, all tested PC's started Windows nearly at the same time, and all of them popped up error Duplicate name exist. I can't figure out any solution. Any suggestions?

• Virtual PC "The page cannot be displayed" error connecting to iis7.5 site on Win7 host.

  I setup virtual pc with the Windows XP IE6 VHD to test a site on Windows 7 host. I created a loopback adapter connection on the host. I have several sites on IIS 7.5, I'm able to connect to all of them except one. And it's the site I need to test... I get "The page cannot be displayed" error. The site loads fine from the host(Windows 7). I've made sure the permissions match that of the other sites that do load. I've recreated the application in IIS manager. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

  I'm interested in locking down my PC so that only a few programs can be used. For example, when I'm writing a paper I only want to be able to use Word. No Firefox or DVD player because I will be distracted. I want to have various modes (one for writing a paper, another for doing taxes) that will prevent me from using any program except for the ones I need to perform a task. Is there a program that will do that? Can be free or commercial.

  At work, my PC is slow. I feel that I can be way more productive if I just wasn't waiting for Visual Studio and everything else to respond. My PC isn't bad (dual-core, 3GB of RAM), but there is a lot of corporate software and whatnot to slow everything down and sometimes lock it up. Now, some developers have begun getting Windows 7 machines with 8 GB of RAM. Of course, I start salivating at this. However, I was told that I "had to justify" why I should get a new machine. I can think of a lot of different things, but I am curious as to what every one else on SO would have to say. NOTE: Ideally, these reasons should be specifically related to .NET development in Visual Studio on a Windows machine. This isn't a "how can I make my machine faster" question.

  I have problem with my pc. Random reboots with post "hyper transport sync flood" error. It happens completely random. Most times i watch movie, some times when i play a game, even when i browse internet. My spec are as follow: MB ASUS M4A78-E CPU Phenom II 940 Sapphire Radeon hd4850 Vapor-X RAM OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 kit 2x2GB PSU CM Real Power M520W CASE CM Centurion 590 Temps of MB, CPU and 4850 are in normal range. MB is hooter, around 60-70°C under load, Radeon 60-65°C under load (playing game for couple hours). CPU dos not past 50-55°C. So i think its not a cooling problem, CM case is pretty good, and have a lots of fans. I try with this memmory: TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX same problem.

  Why does Windows 7 x64 work faster than an x86 edition on my PC even though I mostly use x86 things in it? What's wrong with me, and what am I missing? Majority of the things I use is x86 (e.g. DAWs, games, media players). A considerable amount of them, however, are x64 (although their x86 counterparts work just fine). I've tried using the same things on the same system but always ended up finding Windows 7 x64 working slightly faster than x86. I'm very observant. I even notice the tiniest window animations. System: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93 GHz RAM: 2 GB x 2 = 4 GB DDR2 @ 332 MHz Motherboard: Intel D945GCNL Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4350 @ 1 GB Dedicated Audio: M-Audio FastTrack Pro HDD: Samsung HD753LJ 733 GB & Samsung HD160JJ 156 GB As you can see, my system is old.

• Installing then Running VMware or VirtualBox causes my Windows 7 PC to not boot up after shutting down?

  At my work I am provided with a Windows 7 PC but I am a programmer and Windows gives me problems for doing some types of development so I want to have a virtual Ubuntu Linux machine that I can use for some things. However, I have tried with both VirtualBox and VMware and I am able to install the latest Ubuntu and run it but then when I try to restart / start the computer after it was shut down, I am unable to boot into Windows normally and end up having to go into Safe mode and then use the system restore to get my system back up and working. I am puzzled by this and would appreciate if anyone has any idea why it would be doing this, I have searched on this but can't find anything. Thanks for any advice

  At my work, we have wireless... but our desktops are wired. The wireless in the building is sparse and horrible and my iPad has an unstable wifi connection to it. However, I was wondering since my iPhone is capable of sharing internet to my iPad via bluetooth protocol, if my PC could somehow reproduce that same protocol and allow the iPad to do the same? I'd love it if my iPad had a stable connection via bluetooth when it's just sitting near my desktop. Please advise! Thanks!

  As the title suggests - I have bought a TV show series season on PC Zune. My girlfriend watched the show, and now I'd like to be able to watch the show too. The catch - I'm going to go overseas on a trip soon, and I'd like to be able to watch the show from outside the US. Given that Zune won't let me stream things overseas (past experience, anyway), I would like to download the show to my computer and watch it that way. The problem is that although the full season has been "watched" it appears it was only streamed, not downloaded. Or rather, that one episode was downloaded, and the rest streamed. I bought a season pass (so all the episodes at once) and the show was bought, not rented. How do I make Zune download, not stream, a show?

  I recently converted my external hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS using the Command Prompt. Everything was working fine, I copied a 7GB file to it and everything worked. The next day I switched on my PC, I couldn't and still can't find my external 1.5TB hard drive by my computer. I have about 500 to 800 GB of data on it that I really don't want to lose. Its a Iomega Seagate Freeagent HDD. Has no switch, it switched on automatically, don't know if that helps.

• How can I connect a wired PC to the internet through my Macs wifi connection?

  So I'll probably be buying a USB wifi adapater if I can't get this to work, but I'm trying. I have a wireless router at home and my Macbook Pro is connected to said wifi. My desktop doesn't have a wifi connection, but I've connected my macbook with my desktop via crossover cable. I enabled internet sharing on my macbook, but my Windows 7 desktop can't get a connection. I tried just regular file sharing and that works fine, but the internet sharing doesn't. I assume the goal is to get my PC to see my mac as the default gateway, but I've had no luck manually setting it. What I would like to be able to do is go to a specific PC and see what group policies are being applied, so I can focus on those policies.   My Asus Eee PC 900 shows no signs of life. I push the power button and get no response from anything. No lights, no power, no boot-up screen. It has been like this since I received it from a friend. I asked her what happened and she said that smoke came from the keyboard, it shut down and hasnt turned on since.
